My Favorite 2009 Packer Draft Pick

Without question, it is Quinn Johnson.

After a couple years watching Kuhn and Hall get overwhelmed at the point of attack, I can not wait to watch Johnson blowing people up. And yes, DDD, I'm even looking forward to some fullback dive. (Note how Johnson does not run into the backs of his lineman, but rather finds a way around them and then destroys all in his path?)

This is a man not to be messed with. Hide the women and children.

I like this pick too (but certainly not as much as Raji :)) Saw him play a few times down here in SEC country and he is just a ram. It's a really good pick in that spot

That didn't exactly look like a dive play to me. More offtackle.

Can he get the tough 1/2 yard between the tackles?

To be fair, it looks as though its designed for the line to slide right and for him to take it left. I just liked the absolute monster hit he puts on the first guy he meets... ;)

Aaron, I too was very excited when they made this pick. In fact, I feel like, with the exception of Meredith, every player they picked has a reputation for being tough and aggressive. Exactly what they needed.

Keith - could not agree more. On a side note, I thought of you when they picked Raji, and how last year you called the podcast to lament the fact that the defensive line looked like they were all on skates. Hopefully, Raji helps put an end to all that.

Aaron - You have no idea how pumped I am to have a lineman who plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Btw, you have no idea how exciting it was when the Packers picked the exact player I wanted 3 different times. I have been beating the Raji drum every since the Senior Bowl. The trade to 24 happened so fast that I didn't have a chance to see who was available, but I'm cool with CMIII. When I was looking at who was available in the 4th round, I wanted an O-lineman, and I wanted Lang, so I was joyous when they snagged him. The Quinn Johnson pick surprised me, but I was of course ecstatic. Then, when round 5 came and Meredith was still there, I thought, "There is no way TT passes on him... there's your RT." Very, very, very happy with their haul from this draft. They really needed to address both the offensive and defensive lines.

Good picks;
3 or 4 potential Leading special teamers in this draft. Expect Poppinga, Lansanna to be on the STs as well. I would hope we can get some good ST play this year. I would expect Mathews and Quinn to lead the way

Corey and I were freaking on this video, then Brian had to go all Debbie Downer on us. I like it.

What was Brian's objection? I'm of the mindset that any video showing a future Packer plastering an opponent all over the yard is a GOOD thing ;)

bucks - you think Lansanna makes the final 53? He'll have to battle something fierce...

Brian likes our present fullback corp. Or, perhaps you were rubbing off on him. Day 1 7:03ish

I'd like to comment on the post by packeraaron about the play shown in the video. This is not a play where "its designed for the line to slide right and for him to take it left." This is a belly play where the frontside guard pulls out and the rest of the frontside blocks down. This play is designed for the ballcarrier to duck inside of the guard should he kick out, go to the outside should the guard seal the edge defender, or look for a cutback (which he did) should the fronside of the first 2 options look bad. It just happened that the backside blockers on this play did such a tremendous job that it was an easy decision to cut back. It is NOT a play that is primarily designed to go left, that is the runners 3rd option. My question to you is, how do you know so little about football?

KnowsMore - I actually knew most (though admittedly not all) of what you've written above but don't usually have time to write extensively in the comment sections as I'm at work at a real job that pays the bills for my family. My boss, while a good guy who doesn't mind the time I spend putting up the odd post, would most likely fire me if he found me pouring over YouTube videos.

Now, if you'd like to sponsor the site so that I can quit my job but still support my family, I'd gladly take the time to wow you with my vast football knowledge, and I'd be more than happy to break down every YouTube football video I put up.

Thanks.

Aaron - the fact that you feel it necessary to go "pouring over YouTube videos" to understand the objectives on this play only further reveals how little you seem to understand about this game. That you think the primary option on this play is for the ballcarrier to go left only solidifies my opinion. Your vocabulary wreaks of a layman. The reason I am so critical is due to my displeasure with ignorant fans ranting about why their team can't score a touchdown on every play when they have no idea just how difficult it is to do so. You take all of the strategy that goes into the previously described play, and, incorrectly, boil it down to "it looks as though its designed for the line to slide right and for him to take it left." Slide blocking is a form of pass protection done by blockers, not the run blocking seen in the video. Your depth of football knowledge could best be compared to that of a puddle. It makes me very timid in agreeing with any statement you might make about personnel, coaches, or strategy after having read a comment like that. Now, after having said all of those terrible things, congratulations on having what I'm sure is a wonderful family, and for having acquired gainful employment.

KnowsMore - this is fun.

Have you heard of "sarcasam"? Because that would explain the whole "pouring over YouTube videos" comment now wouldn't it?

As for your original comment, tell me oh Master of Football Knowledge, which side in the video is "front side"? What's that? The RIGHT side of the formation? Wow! That's what I thought! It's a good thing I could break that down for people who have no idea what a "front side" is, isn't it? Kind of like I write for fans rather than players and coaches or something...

As for my family - thanks! I wrote this response on my iPod Touch while putting my one year old to bed because I'm awesome.

Cheers.

Oh fer chrissakes. . . .

There's always one, isn't there? Usually it's some joker talking about movies, amazed that you haven't seen the latest cinematic masterpiece that was smuggled out of Tibet in the alimentary canal of a yak. Or it's a goddamned foodie who is astonished that anyone liked the shrimp they had in Mexico, since everyone knows that the only good shrimp comes from this tiny bay off of Bangladesh.

Football has always been my reprieve from these assholes, but it seems they have found us here, too.

And I thought TT was bizzarro this past weekend. That exchange was worse than Melissa Rivers on the Apprentice last night. Where's that switch...ah, there it is...ok, sanity resumed
