Morgan Burnett Returns To Practice
The veteran safety is back on the field during Green Bay's preperations for the Seahawks.
By PackerAaron
Safety Morgan Burnett participated in practice for the first time in the regular season when the Packers hit the field today in preparation for their showdown with the Seattle Seahawks.
Datone Jones also returned to the practice field after serving his one game suspension.
The Packers defense will need both Burnett and Jones if they are going to slow down Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks offense.

What a difference a couple years seems to make with these safeties. Morgan Burnett used to be public enemy No. 1 on these comment threads. Expect more struggles from Clinton-Dix over the next year or two as he learns the position.

A form tackle shouldn't be too hard to teach. Teaching courage to tackle power runners is a little more challenging!

This is excellent news. I'm hoping getting 42 and 95 back will boost the defense after a sub par showing in Chicago. P.S. the app is awesome and easy to use.

I predict that the three of these 'draft and develop' guys won't be with the team next year. Perhaps someone should stand in for TT when evaluating defensive players in the draft. His record is pretty shoddy.

The love for Burnett seems strange to me. He started out so-so and steadily got worse and then all of a sudden groupthing decided he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He is a C quality S at best. And Datone Jones has been a bust for 3 years. I guess optimism among homers springs eternal.
Look at ATL - worse defense in the league last year and now they look good. Why? Coaching. Dan Quinn from SEA took over during the off-season and suddenly the sane players look much better. Makes me think GB needs new coaches on defense. Except for Joe Whitt, everybody else is a proven loser.

Aaaaah, those Dom Capers haters... Dan Quinn D suffered 24 allowed points and almost lost the game to Eagles... It was not D that save the game for Falcons, but Matt Ryan and offense... And they played at home... Lets see how they'll play against Giants in New York, before we make final marking of that "wonderful" D!

Archie, Atlanta was a huge player in Free Agency and stocked up on defense in the draft so it's not "The sane (lol) Players" as last year.
Morgan Burnett and Matthews in the middle are what really helped the Packers run defense last year. IMO Burnett finally "Earned" his money last season.
I do understand your frustration though, we've been talking about the Packers Run Defense for what, 5 seasons counting this year? My hope is it's early in the year. Matthews played in his FIRST GAME last Sunday. Lets give them time to get their freaking legs under them before we start calling for heads after week ONE!

Again, it's like you're not even watching the same sport.
I wouldn't grade Burnett as anything more than a B/B-, but to say he's gotten steadily worse is just factually incorrect. The opposite is true. Burnett started out so-so (in fact, I'd even say that's generous on your part, as he blew plenty of coverage assignments early in his career).
The fact is that now not only has he improved in coverage (still not his best trait, as he sometimes gets exposed and is definitely not the ball magnet he looked like in college), but he has become a strength in the run game. He gives us a clear boost there, and I'm not sure how that's debatable. When healthy, he fills like a linebacker.
When he's gone, it's noticeable. The drop to Hyde is clear, and it makes HHCD worse too.

"Atl-worse [sic] defense in the league last year and now they look good"
After ONE game? Seems just a bit premature.

Burnett's best two years were his rookie year and last year. The common thread between those two years was he had a reliable safety next to him e.g. Collins and Clinton-Dix.
I think it is unfair to be harsh on Burnett when he clearly had lack luster talent like Bigby, Peprah, McMillian, M.D. Jennings playing next to him. These guys all were terrible.
