Missed Adjustment

Missed Adjustment

Good stuff from Matt Bowen over at the National Football Post regarding last nights game. I couldn't agree more with the following:

Missed adjustment by Capers?

...the Cardinals were doing the same thing we saw from Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers in December when they tore up the Packers’ secondary. Rub routes, combination routes out of the bunch and stack alignments and, most of all, routes that break inside — back to the quarterback — away from the defenders’ leverage. If I’m Dom Capers, I start playing some Cover 1 Robber — where the defense drops a linebacker to a depth of 10 yards between the hashes. What this does is allow defenders to run those underneath crossers that the Cardinals were producing on to a “rover” who can force the ball to go elsewhere. It looked too easy against a man-to man scheme with a deep middle of the field safety as the only help. Charles Woodson and the Packers secondary looked outmatched.

Packers really need to address the personel issue in the secondary. The Steelers and The Cardinals exposed the achilles heel of this defense and it will continue to haunt them until something is fixed. Getting Al Harris back may help but they need to scour the league for a young up and comer to add some depth to a very thin defensive backfield...OH and also....cut Jarrett Bush

Bush, Bell gotta go, shouldn't have been there to start with. Capers has a good defense, not great, but better than they used to have. AJ Hawk needs to step up next year, or be replaced for sure. Collins is an all pro, just not the top one in the league. Packers were lucky to even be in the playoffs with all the losses on the defense, so it's no surprise the truley top offensive teams, Pittsburgh,Minnesota, Arizona, tore them apart. If they woulda played like they did against Dallas, they easily coulda won. Expect a similar year next year.

Ah, the cover 1 defense. Like I mentioned in another comment this is exactly a type of play that our previous coordinator Bob Sanders liked to run. Now was he the best defensive coordinator? No but we certainly should have looked at what we did right in his scheme in order to translate them into our transition to the 3-4.

I saw Barnett, Hawk, and Chillar "rove" around the middle of the field all night in zone. Problem is when you have Fitzgerald those guys tend to focus too much on him and leave other guys wide open. On one replay I saw Fitz run essentially a drag route and Barnett run down from his spot to cover him leaving his vacated spot completely open.
.
It does suck that the one thing that probably never would've happened last year has plagued us when the veteran QBs come to play.

Yes the Steeler and Cardinals exploited something in the personnel...of the NFL officiating staff! Stacked sets is just a nice way to say pick routes. And the blantant pushing off at the top of the routes was uncalled in both games. You gotta cover the WRs and also spy the backs with your LBs, and when the WRs run off the DBs so physically they dont stand a chance. Its not all the officials fault, guys with experience know how to fight that off. Backup players dont have the experience or the size to deal with that, and since its a technique thing its not something you can get fixed inside of a game. You also have to respect the running games of both teams. Also, dont get too upset at backup DBs, because how many passers put up 150+ ratings? We have our own that (almost) had the answer and that was against a backfield with two probowl starters--actually Rodgers threw for MORE yards than Warner and had them beat deep in OT. Dig out your undies a little and realize the rules of the league and how its officiated are designed for games like this.
