Mike Neal Added to Injury Report with Shoulder Bruise
Mike Neal has a bruised shoulder. Doesn't think will practice Thursday, either. Hopeful for Friday "Not a lot of fun" with 2 OLBs.
— Packer Report (@PackerReport) October 16, 2013
Seeing as Clay Matthews and Nick Perry have officially been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, the concern level is high at the outside linebacker position.
Mike Neal hasn't been ruled out, but right now, the Packers are down to two fully healthy outside linebackers and they're a pair of inexperienced rookies in Andy Mulumba and Nate Palmer.

Datone Jones what the heck put him out there

If it really comes down to not having Neal available for the game or if one of the OLBs gets dinged up during the game or if more than 3 OLBs are needed for rotational "fresh leg" depth then I could see J.Lattimore being available to play OLB and S.Barrington receiving some reps at ILB in place of J.Lattimore.
Also, if recently signed (to the PS) Victor Aiyewa is an ILB and doesn't appear to be showing any promise on the PS - the Pack should try to sign Terrell Manning over him to the PS since he already has some knowledge of the team's defensive scheme.

Wonder if is related to the same knee injury he suffered in training camp. Probably never healed properly. Either way, a very short-lived career so far for Mr. Johnson.
The Packers have so many injuries they're outsourcing to other teams.

"And we're stepping into the twightlight zone. " Golden Earring style.

There is something seriously wrong with the Packers medical/training staff. How could the Packers not put this guy on the IR knowing he had a torn ACL? or wait, they didn't know he had a torn ACL? What kind of ham an eggers do we have on the Packers that something like this happens? I demand answers damnit!! I'm Longshanks!!

Its not the trainers. Its the fact Teddy likes those late round draft choices that other teams passed on: too small, too inexperienced in Div Ia or II, cheap, 31 other teams said no: Bishop Zombo, Ross, the list goes on and on and were wondering why we have simple injuries like hamstrings?????
October 16, 2013 at 11:54 pm
Bishop was a 5th rounder who led the Pac 10 in tackles. Your theory, Morgan, is by far the worst, most ignorant explanation or reasoning I've ever read about these injuries. Tinkerin Teds draft strategy is the reason everyone is getting hurt. Wow! Thanks for that

Time for Dom to use the abundance of D lineman he has this year and switch to a 4-3 defense against the Browns especially if Neal is limited at all. Not a good idea to rely on 2 rookie OLBs to get the pressure we need on Weeden.
That seems like a much better idea than moving Datone Jones to OLB or anybody else for that matter. Come on Dom be smart.
October 16, 2013 at 04:27 pm
That actually makes sense Nononsense. Only thing that would concern me is if everyone is so used to the 3-4(sometimes as little as 1 or 2 d-lineman) that, scheme wise, they keep f'ning up. Else, from a numbers standpoint you'd be getting some of your better players on the field.
October 16, 2013 at 04:51 pm
That's exactly why I don't think Dom would do that. The entire defense is now playing a different scheme vs. relying on two rookie OLB's who do know their jobs but just don't have alot of experience. I say it's better to just stick with the 3/4 and hope Neal can play. If not, at least Cleveland is not that good offensively especially with Weeden at qb. The Packers should be good enough even if Palmer and Mulumba were to be our starters. Heyward sounds like he could be back so that will help alot.

I think it's more likely that other than a possible hybrid 4-3 on occasional 1st downs (or likely running downs) we will most likely see the team lining up in a 3-3-5 type of defense w/ Hyde, McMillan, and perhaps Burnett as the most likely candidates to be moved up into the box in a hybrid linebacker role.
October 16, 2013 at 07:41 pm
He should use a 4-3 at the very least in known passing situations. If we are down to 2 OLBs and a limited Mike Neal than playing them the whole game doesn't make sense. They need to switch it up a bit.

Another soft pussy
October 17, 2013 at 12:03 am
Tinkerin Ted should have known this before using a 2nd round pick on Neal, right? How dare these guys get hurt in football! I meandidn't TT clearly see "soft pussy" grade put on these guys Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock? Keep the emotions coming and keep ditching any sense of logic or reasoning. It's freaking hilarious!

Unfortunately, McCarthy speak of "shoulder bruise" translates to shoulder sprain and/or torn ligaments.
At least McCarthy's not saying knee bruise anymore.

I'm not sure what to do with Neal after this year. Hopefully he will stay on the field and there will be justification for extending his contract. But if he misses time with various injuries my thoughts are to cut bait. I'd rather have somebody with less "upside" and "potential" but who is available when we need somebody on the field. For all the crap we have given Hawk he has been available 123 out of 125 games since being drafted. That's damn good to have to those kinda guys on the team.

I'd definitely re-sign him, but for a modest salary.
