Mike McCarthy on Sam Shields: "When He Can Play, He'll Play"

The Packers cornerback was listed as "did not participate" on the team's injury report on Wednesday.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy conducted a post-practice press conference on Wednesday. The following are select comments from his meeting with the media:

  • On injuries: Morgan Burnett and actually Datone (Jones) and James Starks, I just came from the practice facility, all three of them look like they're moving pretty good. .. I don't have high concern.
  • On Sam Shields' knee injury: Sam did some work today, but I don't have a report.
  • On whether he'd be inclined to rest Shields Sunday: I don't keep players out for games. If a player can play, he plays. Sam's going through a medical situation and when he can play, he'll play.
  • On the Saints: First off, you look at the Saints, their record is 2-4, four losses on the road. But they're not a 2-4 football team. They play the right way. It's going to be a challenge, what they do offensively. … Drew Brees is an outstanding, outstanding football player. … Playing in that dome, it's the loudest or one of the loudest environments. … I thought the work today was outstanding. … We're strapping it up. We've got a big one in front of us.
  • On guarding Jimmy Graham: Jimmy Graham is a tough match-up, no doubt. … He's definitely someone you have to be smart with.
  • On Drew Brees and his receivers: They've had some injuries. There's definiltey some things that aren't as tight when you're playing with the same players every day. … We're getting ready for a dynamic quarterback running a dynamic offense.
  • On Randall Cobb: I think Randall, he's back. He had a great offseason, you can see that right away. Randall needs to touch the football … it doesn't matter how you get it to him.
  • On his expectation of how games will go: I think you go into every game shooting all your bullets. Hopefully you're hitting them and they're not hitting you. … It's on turf, this is going to be a fast environment. It's an important game for both teams. … We're going to try to scoring as much as we can, and we'll try to stop them from scoring.
  • On Cobb scoring seven of his eight touchdowns from the eight-yard line and in: I think any time you're playing inside the eight-yard line, there's not much space … I think it's a reflection of his instincts and being on the same page as the quarterback.
  • On McCarthy's time in New Orleans: I still have a lot of friends. … Tom Benson and his family are very nice. … Didn't win enough games but had some excellent moments.
  • On coaching in New Orleans: That was a huge opportunity for me personally. Jim Haslett gave me an opportunity to be offensive coordinator. … You're playing 10 dome games a year. … It was a great opportunity.
  • On playing in the Super Dome: It's about energy. The flow of energy is important in every-day life, let alone a football game. ... It's something they feed off of, and they should. … This is a tough place to play.
  • On preparing for the noise inside the stadium: You look at the challenges, I think offensively, our challenge of playing in the noise, we prepare a lot for that. … I expect us to handle the crowd noise Sunday night. … (The Saints') tempo is outstanding. … It's an exciting place to play.
  • On the Packers' NASCAR package: All four of those guys (Julius Peppers, Clay Matthews, Nick Perry and Mike Neal) are definitely hitting the targets as far as how we're playing them. I'd like to get Nick Perry some more reps. …. It's important to have the rotation that we've been able to do.
  • On Andrew Quarless being split out wide: You have an opportunity to create potential match-ups whether it's for the tight ends or someone else.
  • On Ha Ha Clinton-Dix: I think Ha Ha is an excellent football player. There's a reason we drafted him in the first round. ... At the end of the day, you're talking about a very natural, instinctive football players.
  • On the rotation between Clinton-Dix and Micah Hyde at safety: That's all part of game-planning. Like the defensive line, we're trying to utilize our guys as bst we can.

I haven't watched them other than the Cowboys game and part of the Lions game, but they are 2nd in yards per game and 10th in points per game.

The Saints have put up 24 or more points 3 times this year, against the Falcons, Browns, and Bucs. Not exactly a gauntlet of premier NFL defenses.

Their defense has given up 24 or more points 5 times in 6 games, and 31 or more three times. In their two home games they've held the Vikings to 9 points and the Bucs to 31.
