Mike McCarthy on David Bakhtiari: He's Had an Excellent Season

The Packers head coach commented on his starting left tackle on Thursday.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy meet with the media on Thursday in advance of the upcoming match-up at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16.

The following are select comments from McCarthy's press conference:

  • On Bryan Bulaga's status: Bryan Bulaga is in the concussion protocol. He's making progress. He's doing good.
  • On Bulaga watching practice: When you get out of the building and into the Hutson Center, that's a good thing.
  • On Buccaneers receivers: I think you can definitely compare Tampa's receivers to Chicago's. … I think it's definitely a focus of ours. Doug Martin's been playing very well too, running the football.
  • On the Packers offensive line: They're getting more reps at it. They're playing faster. I just think when teams have a chance to work each and every day, you continue to improve.
  • On I would say our biggest improvement offensively, I know we've had more production in a number of different areas, to me one of the biggest improvements is the ability of the backs to be three-down players. … Rotation on personnel has been cut down 60, 70 percent. … I think that's been a huge help for us this year.
  • On taking shots downfield at home: There's some things that favor that … I think it could probably be helpful at home. Everything on offense is easer at home. …. You don't have to wory about crowd noise.
  • On David Bakhtiari: David Bakhtiari has had an excellent season. For him to come in here last year and start every game as a rookie … you look for all those player to take a jump, and he's definitely done that. … I'm very happy with David.
  • On Buccaneers running back Doug Martin: He has a distinct style. He's been a very productive football player throughout his career. … Having him healthy definitley makes a difference.
  • On Packers fans at raod games: Our fans are always there early. … That's enjoyable. If anything it makes you sometimes, it increases the crowd noise. It makes for a fun atmosphere.
  • On hydration in a warm environment: It's something that you have to be conscientious of. … Hydration is something that we work on each and every week, but it's an even bigger emphasis this week.
  • On the rookie class of wide receivers: It's a great class. I think it's important to give the individuals credit for that. … Just look at the draft prospects each and every year, more and more people are playing wide-open football.
  • On Eddie Lacy's eye injury: It's a personal non-football thing. ... I don't have high concern for it.

Bahktiari has been an absolute gem. May not be a pro-bowler, but another great pick by TT.

I would say that Bakhtiari has been playing better since roughly the bye. Not sure I'd call it a jump, but it has been encouraging. Excellent draft pick, though, without a doubt.
