Mike McCarthy: Datone Jones Turned His Ankle

The Packers defensive lineman landed on the team's injury report after turning his ankle.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Friday for the final time in advance of Sunday's upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The following are select comments from McCarthy's press conference:

  • On what Nick Perry (shoulder) needs to show in order to play on Sunday: Nick Perry, he's improving. Just probably get out there tomorrow and get through the practice. It would be a limited participation.
  • On the linebacker rotation if Perry doesn't play: It will adjust no doubt. Certain reps will go to other players obviously. But we're prepared for that. … We'll be ready to go either way.
  • On Datone Jones' injury: Datone turned his ankle yesterday. We'll see how tomorrow goes. We'll get him out there tomorrow and see what he can do.
  • On the Vikings claiming running back Ben Tate on waivers: Just from Tate's, his place in the game, you look at his run style. … If he does play or how much he plays, I don't really think it's going to change how much they run the ball. … But yes, we've gone back and watched tape on him individually.
  • On the value of having two return specialists on punt returns: I think it's like any position, you can't have enough good players. … I think it gives you the ability to approach the return game differently week to week. … It definiltey gives you flexibility.
  • On former Packers draft choice Charles Johnson playing for the Vikings: Charles is obviously a big receiver that we felt had a lot potential. .. He's a good fit for their scheme.
  • On Joe Whitt being rumored for the Troy University job: This is that time of year. Joe's an outstanding football coach. What he's done with the corners speaks for itself. … I'm not going to speak on any job or individual in detail, but this is an excellent coaching staff. It's good to see people recognize that.

Man, can we wrap Jones' ankles? And if they already do... maybe a little tighter?

That would heel. Lets not hope for a Achillies tear, most times career ending. He does seem to have glass ankles.

We need Datone to get healthy and play up to his 1st Round draft pick potential. So far we have only seen a few glimpses of what he can do. I am wondering if there are other things the team can do to prevent sprained ankles? Would a different kind of football shoe give more support than what Datone now wears--or does he need to be wrapped up more? Or what?

Is it too much to ask for one of our 1st round DL picks, awesome athletes that look like they are built out of rock,. not suddenly be chronically fragile? Just one? Perry,Jones......, for a whole season or most of one, maybe even the last half.
