Mike McCarthy: Clay Matthews is Not an Inside Linebacker

The head coach of the Packers wasn't ready to fully buy-in with Matthews as an inside linebacker on Monday.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media for his usual day-after-game press conference on Monday.

The following are select comments from the day after a Week 10 55-14 win over the Chicago Bears:

  • On Clay Matthews: Clay Matthews is not an inside linebacker. He's a football player. Really, you go back to the meetings in the spring, the focus was to play more players on defense. … We'll see where he plays this week.
  • On the transition to inside linebacker: Clay is a dynamic football player that makes impact plays, but he has the ability to switch positions mentally. … For him to go in there and be as productive as he was, you have to give him a lot of credit for his instincts and anticipation. … It's what you go through every week in this league. You look at the match-ups you have on their offensive line and your defensive front.
  • On giving the Bears an unscouted look: The value of it is in the first opportunity. You do that so there's an adjustment that's made, how they declare their run-blocking schemes, how they declare their pass-protection schemes. … The other benefit is the guards and centers, they didn't get to practice, anticipate that unscouted look.
  • On the difference from Matthews playing in the 4-3 earlier in the season: I wouldn't have called him a middle linebacker there. I really don't want to get that specific about the scheme, but he played a different position in the quads than he did in the nickel package.
  • On pulling players in the second half: First of all, we show up every week to play four quarters. That's obvious that you show up in the week to prepare for. That stresses players out when you starting pulling players out early. … That's what happened last night. I don't have a thing on my call sheet, we're going to pull everybody out at this point. … It was important for us to take away any surge from the Bears.
  • On weighing the positives and negatives of pulling players: There is a balance. You have 46 players and you start substituting players. … It's a challenge for those guys, but it's a great experience. … Matt (Flynn's) played three times in nine games. That's not normal.
  • On the touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson: Aaron at the line of scrimmage, as far as his recognition and anticipation, he's off the charts. … He's at the highest level of his career. That particular play, the defense thought Aaron was checking the coverage adjustment. … It's just two guys being on the same page making a big-time play.
  • On the mental game of playing quarterback: You can't play quarterback without the ability to anticipate, recognize. … The strength of any successful quarterback is his mental and emotional gifts.
  • On comparing Aaron Rodgers to other great quarterbacks: I'm not going to compare him between Joe Montana and anybody. I'm not qualified to do that. … I think anybody that knows Aaron on a personal level, he's a very intelligent individual.
  • On DuJuan Harris: I thought DuJuan Harris got opportunities. If you look at the kickoff returns, he hasn't had many opportunities. … I thought our coverage units were outstanding. … We made some changes on that last kickoff and they score a touchdown. … I thought DuJuan took full advantage. … In the four-minutes offense, we did a good job blocking up front and letting him run.
  • On Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang playing through injuries: Josh and T.J., it's very valuable having those guys. They're excellent players. … They both came out of the game, I'm told, in good shape. … Lane Taylor and J.C. and Garth got in there and did some good things.
  • On any potential injury to Nick Perry: I don't have anything, no.
  • On McCarthy tripping on the sideline: I got a knee I'm battling right now, and I probably didn't say the right kind of words.
  • On McCarthy's failed instant-replay challenge: Bad challenge. Dumb challenge. Three yards, should have never challenged it.
  • On the tight ends: We started that way. That was the priority we wanted to get, two-tight end personnel. … You'd like to see all the games go that way as far as utilization of personnel.
  • More on tight ends: I like the way our tight ends are playing. I think they're getting better. … We'll get them involved more in the passing game. Once again, those guys just need opportunities.
  • On screen passes: We've actually called a lot of screens this year. You probably can't see it on the TV copy. … Our screen game from our self-scout statistics is very productive.
  • On the message Sitton and Lang sent: To me that's all part of your culture, that's all part of your leadership and showing the younger guys how it's done. … These guys aren't going to feel good for months.
  • On getting cocky playing at home: I don't think so. That's going to be one of the themes of our meeting and we'll tell them not to listen to you again. … Obviously we like playing at home, and I hope we keep it going.
  • On Julius Peppers: I think Juliius Peppers is getting more and more comfortable each and every week. … I think that's the natural progression of playing together. … I think he's very, very comfortable in what he's being asked to do.
  • On Peppers' pre-game speech: It's an opportuntity for leadership. I've been doing it for a number of years. We have three captains, they go out for the coin flip each game. … We forgot to tell julius it was two minutes. That's why we were late.
  • More on Peppers' pre-game speech: He was unbelievable. Obviously the best one we've ever had.

Don't get too high on the wins
or too low on the losses. This is entertainment and GB has the directors and the cast. Things change but if the directors are unchanged...a solid future is probable.

I don't care if he's here. But you'd think he'd go to one of the numerous Steeler blogs.

Maybe he was looking for SB45 coverage, and never left?

Well Lattimore, B. Jones, and Barrington are not NFL ILBs either and Hawk is not a good one, so why not at least try Clay at the position?

I posted a long time ago I thought Dom was wasting the talent of mathews. He has the speed and size to be an inside linebacker because we don't have one on this team.
You watch hawk and look at his reaction time and speed and he is slow. This guy just can't run.
A huge difference with Mathews in the middle.

To be fair, it was not just Hawk's lack of reaction time and speed that has stood out.

When is the last time you saw a Packer ILBer hit like Clay was hitting last night?

AJ usually just softly guides the opponent to the ground (5 or more yards beyond the line of scrimmage) or jumps on the pile when someone else make the tackle for one of his patented "assists."

With Philly coming to town they better consider keeping him in that role, at least for another week to help contain McCoy and Sproles. If they isolate Hawk on either of those two its game over.

Against a team like Philly who uses a lot of read option looks, you actually want Clay futher away from the ball and off the LOS. He is a see it, kill it kind of guy and with a little space to see the play develop, he can kill the guy with the ball instead of chasing the fake.

'On Clay Matthews: Clay Matthews is not an inside linebacker. He's a football player. Really, you go back to the meetings in the spring, the focus was to play more players on defense. … We'll see where he plays this week.'

This sounds like coaches speak for he is going to be doing exactly what we saw against the Bears. He will play ILB on early downs and OLB on later downs.

I expect to see Clay play everywhere again.

I'm not sure I agree it sounded like Coachspeak for more of what we saw in Chicago. I'm not sure what I think it sounded like.

But I sure hope you're right.

Yeah, basically i just meant that McCarthy doesn't want to give away what they are planing on doing. Doing what McCarthy calls gamesmanship.

As productive as Clay was why wouldn't they put him there again? What i like about putting him in the middle is he can go sideline to sideline from there. When he is at OLB he pretty much is only playing in half the field. Also teams can game plan around him on that side. Its going to be tougher to scheme against him in the middle where he can drop in coverage or blitz and blitz any gap. Putting Clay there really will open up the playbook for Capers.

The other thing I like about it is it puts their 3 best pass rushers on the field at once for all 3 downs. This year the 3 best pass rushers have been Peppers, Perry and Mathews.
An added bonus to having Perry playing early downs against the LT, is that when they put Clay at OLB on 3rd downs or whenever, it gives the LT a change of pace. The LT will get used to going against Perry which then Mathews comes in and will be more explosive and the LT wont be used to that facing Perry all game long. Could create a few more sack opportunities then before, just having that change of pace.

I really think this was a great decision and move by the coaches.
