Meet the Packers 2013 Rookies—Datone Jones, DT/DE

Welcome to the return of my rookie video series!

A couple of years ago, I cut together videos introducing you to the first three picks of the 2011 NFL Draft class. Last year I didn't have the time, but since I'm not the NFC North writer at Bleacher Report anymore, now I have the time.

I'm going to try and do this for all seven rounds, but the deeper into the draft class we get, the harder it is to find game footage.

We start with former UCLA Datone Jones, a fierce pass rusher and run defender. While we all thought the last place the Packers would go was defensive line, with Jerel Worthy possibly on the PUP to start the year, it's actually almost a no-brainer pick.

Here are my thoughts on Jones—the Packers' first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Really? I saw quite a bit of predraft talk about going D line. Love the video btw.

I'd say upwards of 60% of mocks I saw had Packers going D-line.

A quick search popped up a Mel Kiper Jr mock from a couple of days before the draft with Datone Jones going to the Packers, and he was far from alone. I was figuring DL after I figured out how deep the draft was at S. I just didn't count on the Packers passing on ALL of the safeties. I also was not thinking Datone Jones. But I am liking how he sounds off the field.

I expected the Packers to draft a Safety as well. However, I believed if they were going to draft one, it would have been in the top 3 rounds. They already had McMillan drafted in the 4th and Jennings. If they wanted to add the the Safety group it would be in the top of the draft. Once it got to the 4th, I thought they would pass on a Safety until UDFA. A safety in the draft would have had to be ahead of McMillan from the start or it didn't make sense to draft one at all. Once it got past the 2nd day, they were going to give McMillan/Jennings duo the chance this year.

I think that's about right. I commented on the live draft blog something to the effect that I wondered how the evaluation of the players already on their roster might impact draft decisions. So we're on the same page there. I didn't rule it out after round 3 though, because this year the S class was deep, and last year it was widely regarded as being pretty thin.

Most of the mocks I saw were safety, with a few Lacy mentions. *shrug*

Doesn't matter now, he's a Packer and a great fit.

Thanks for watching guys.

Yeah I'm with you Garda, most of the websites has us going with Lacy, EIFERT, Reid with some Sylvester Williams/Menelik Watson/Jesse Williams sprinkled in... Either way, I woulda taken Datone Jones over all of them. That dude is guna turn into the second coming of Javon Kearse/Julius Peppers. Mark my words, if he plays in 12 games this season he comes away with at least 8 sacks. I just hope to God Raji regains his pass-rushing ability or Worthy or Boyd step up to take a lil pressure off the kid

I like Jones A LOT - I didn't expect the pick but I love it.

I was all DL all the way through the draft season. To me, it was their #1 need. And you know who I picked in the CHTV Draft guide...
