McCarthy: Clifton Has "Significant" Hamstring Injury

Chad Clifton could miss more than a few weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

Mike McCarthy met with reporters this afternoon after last nights big come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Falcons.

McCarthy wasted no time getting to the topic most people were no doubt interested in - the health of starting left tackle Chad Clifton.

The head coach, looking weary after what was no doubt a long night returning to Green Bay and then an early morning meeting with his coaches and players, told the gathering that Clifton suffered a "significant" hamstring injury and that it would take "a couple of weeks" to determine just how significant the injury truly is.

McCarthy offered no hint on what he planned to do at the position in the interim, be it going forward as the team finished against Atlanta with second year player Marshall Newhouse at left tackle and rookie Derek Sherrod at right tackle, or if regular starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga would come back and play left tackle with Newhouse going back to the right side.

If the Packers feel Clifton's injury could be season ending, they may possibly look to sign Tony Moll, who they had in for a workout a few weeks ago, to add depth along the offensive line.

I realize the thought of losing tackles didn't factor into the retention of 5 TE's, but I sure feel better knowing the Packers have 5 TE's, most of which are capable blockers while also being threats to catch the football. Eases my mind regardless of where they align Bulaga/Sherrod/Newhouse.

Should have happened against the Broncos late in the game, too. But for whatever reason they decided to run up the score.

Had to run up the score to ensure a high position on Don Banks' Power Rankings, which is 37.23% of the BCS rank.

I think.

i actually have confidence in sherrod, newhouse, and bulaga. losing starters to injury doesn't even bother me anymore. i'm starting to realize that 95 percent of the players in the nfl are replaceable. granted - some players are better than others, but for the most part, all these guys are capable world class athletes who can get the job done as long as they are put in position - by coaches - to succeed.

see you in a couple weeks cliffy.

p.s. bet we see clifton again this year before we see neal.

"i’m starting to realize that 95 percent of the players in the nfl are replaceable."

I'd say the percentage is a bit high, but mostly - this is correct.

Replaceable yes, but not replaceable by just anybody. See Barbre, Allen.

Tackle is not a position you want to replace with just anybody given the franchise player/MVP-to-be they are protecting. I trust TT to find the best option available, doubt it would be via trade (not TT's MO) but that's always an option. Do his buddies in Tenn or Seattle have anybody we could trade for a TE?

Neal will be back at the BYE. If the young tackles play well, I can see Clifton sitting until Thanksgiving.

If Newhouse plays like he did last night and continues to improve, then no, probably won't rush Cliffy back in any sense of the word.

If Neal makes it back, and makes a significant impact for more than a couple weeks this season I'll be surprised.

Remember, Lang can get it done at LT or RT. We got guys who can get it done. THANK YOU TED THOMPSON.

We knew the day would come when Cliffy went down. Bulaga should be back so I'd keep him at RT and Newhouse at LT. Fact is that losing tackles is normally huge for teams, the Packers on the other hand just keep rolling!

Not what I was hoping to see.

Ya know what else I don't want to see? Jaime Dukes. Is that man just ENTIRELY anti-Packer or what? I remember when he loved the Packers when Favre was qb, now I go to NFL.com and there's a new segment all the time with him finding a way to bash the Pack.

CheeseheadTV should have a poll - Most desired pundit to be removed. I know there'd be a lot of Buck and Aikman callings out there, but I'd run the anti-Dukes campaign pretty strong.

Sorry, a little off-topic I know - I wasn't sure where else to put this.

If anything, the Packer organization understates injuries... so if it will take 2 weeks just to evaluate, then it could very well be an injury that requires surgery (like Neal). If so, Clifton just played his last game as a Packer -- likely as an NFL player.

Even if it doesn't require surgery, anybody that's over 30 -- and has popped a hamstring -- knows that you simply can't rush back. This could be a 6-week rehab easily, which would be Week 13 before his return. By this time, I think the Packers will have moved on with Newhouse/Sherrod.

For all of us that remember him as a bookend with Tauscher, and their glory years with Ahman Green -- it's sad to see him go. But with a rookie and one-year pro coming in with very little drop-off in quality of play, then that could be the strongest indicator that his play has slipped, and it's time to move on.

I'm glad he got XLV.

The Clifton of the last stretch of 10 games last season is a starter on almost any team in this league.

Sad to see Clifton having to deal with this, but it is no accident that O-tackels have been the Packer's #1 draft picks for two years in a row. The years and the mileage accumulate for us all, pro-football players accumulate alot of mileage - certainly Chad Clifton has accumulated more than his share (remember that cheap shot at Tampa Bay - that was like surviving a train wreck).
