McCarthy Can Not Be Serious

From his presser yesterday:

Have the protection issues forced you to call games differently?
Oh, absolutely. I would hope it’s obvious that we’ve been playing differently since early in the season as far as the way games have been called.

Actually coach, it kinda looks exactly the same.

  1. He is living in denial. He just can’t bring himself to believe that this is really happening. Not good.

  2. Ron La Canne says:

Actually Aaron, he is correct. He stopped throwing “Ball Control” short passes. He istrying to see just how long Rodgers can remain upright.

  3. jack says:

ron is correct. he went from the very successful short passing game to the 5-7 step drop/long ball game. great call considering your o-line is one of the worst in the nfl. nice job mm.

  4. CSS says:

Really is somewhat of a misnomer that the short passing game is even there. Go back and look at the games. You will see that defenses caught on in the first Vikings game. They are either taking away the short options (check down) or the Packers are’nt chipping and releasing cause they are in max pass pro.

Look, every team now is running a defense and making the same wager: I can take away the short game first and I bet my 4 man rush gets to the QB before the intermediate to deep route develops or my coverage simply wins out. Guess what, it’s working more often then it’s failing.

Go back and look at the Buc’s game in particular there WAS NO CHECKDOWN on most plays. They gambled and won on defense consistantly. The best cure for the offense, you have to run the ball effectively and KEEP running the ball no matter if you’re down by 14. So, those of you constantly saying go to the checkdown, there frequently is no checkdown….oppossing defeses are making the wager and winning.

  5. PackersRS says:

Actually, Aaron, the playcall has been different. If you analyze the Bears game and the Buccaneers game, he called MORE deep plays (10 yards or more) than he did against the Bears. It’s been WORSE.

  6. Aaron Nagler says:

I don’t know what games you guys have been watching, but McCarthy hasn’t called a short controlled passing game all year.

  7. CSS says:

Defenses are taking away the short passing game between the hashes, Aaron. They need to go to the exterior and utilize screens. Go back and watch the Buc’s game, they cheated inside and short on every play after the first two slant completions. People saying there’s a controlled passing game short and between the hashes during the last few weeks haven’t been paying attention to the defensive strategy employeed by the opposing team.

Teams are taking away the short middle because they can generate a 4 man rush and have no need to respect the run.

  8. Aaron Nagler says:

CSS – I know that’s what McCarthy is sellin’ but I’m not buyin’. Yes, the corners are cheating in – so go to bunch formations, send guys in motion, etc. There are plenty of ways to counter act and get the defense out of that but McCarthy keeps sticking with his static 3 and 4 wide spread and calling 5 and 7 step drops. It’s asinine.

  9. CSS says:

I’m not disputing what you’re saying even in the slightest, Aaron. He does need to change and get a bit more creative with manufacturing a short passing game when the running and pass pro are terrrible. I’m simply trying to make a point to the blanketed statements by the, ‘he needs to go do the checkdown and slant’ crowd. You re-watch the games, as do I, and you know that there frequently is no checkdown.

So yes, it is on McCarthy to creatively manufacture one but it’s also silly on behalf of most fans to assume it’s been there and we’re ‘simply not using it.’

  10. wgbeethree says:

Unfortunately this reminds me about a quote on government’s tendency to put the priorities of large corporations and the banking elite ahead of the average person and how they ”get away” with it. It seems all too fitting considering MM’s attitude and comments lately ….”Some people would sooner die than have to face the ugly truth that reality presents us with…and many do.”

I know this is a football blog and I’m not trying to bring any politics into it at all! This quote just fits my opinion of MM’s refusal to open his eyes and acknowledge what’s going wrong with the team right now too perfectly not to use it.

  11. Ron La Canne says:

I seem to remember a fair amount of check out slants in the first two games. I remember Jennings and Driver with impressive YAC then.

  12. NickGBP says:

I think it would be ignorant to say he hasn’t adjusted his gameplan. Look at all the chips after the 3rd game. Our RBs hardly EVER chipped before then. Look at all the TEs staying in to block. He used max protect often and even that failed. Last game he used more spread formations than he had. He introduced screens in the first Vikings game. Again, not something we had done often. What do you want him to do, run the Wildcat? He’s brought a fair amount of variety while attempting to stay within the strengths of the team (which is clearly the passing game).
    .
Saying he’s not mixing it up and saying what he’s doing isn’t working are entirely different things. He IS trying, regardless of what you want to think. No problem with you saying his attempts havent been successfull….but saying he hasn’t tried means you havent been paying attention. All you have to do is rewatch the games. Unfortunately people are turning on him fast and this snowball effect is going to blanket all objectiveness and reason.

  13. Aaron Nagler says:

Nick – I don’t WANT to think anything. I’m telling you what I see when I watch the games. 5 and 7 step drops almost exclusively. Go back and watch that Tampa game again – go look at how many times he comes out in 3 wide with a single back, with the WRs spread out from the formation. All the time? No. The majority? Yes. Has he adjusted the protection? Yes. Has he stopped calling long developing pass plays? No.

  14. Dilligaff says:

We don’t have a short passing game, with Jermichael Finley injured and running backs who can’t catch the ball.

  15. jack says:

aaron- i was referring to the past couple of years when our receivers lead the league in yards after catch. actually, the few times this season that mm called short passing plays they have been fairly successful. i’m not sure what has caused the shift in playcalling this season.

  16. Aaron Nagler says:

jack – funny thing is the Packers have only led the league in yac one year – 2007. They weren’t even close last year and haven’t come close this year. A lot of this is due to, yes, the way Favre and Rodgers throw and run the offense. There, I said it.

  17. jack says:

right on. in 2006 we were 2nd in y.a.c., 2007 we were 1st, and last year we were 14th.

  18. Keith says:

McCarthy needs to bone up on his history, or read CHTV, because this quote was on the page when I read this post:
“You might reduce Lombardi’s coaching philosophy to a single sentence: In any game, you do the things you do best and you do them over and over and over.” – George Halas

    —–

    Dear Mike, DO THIS!

  19. Jim in DC says:

MM freshened it up for the 21st Century…he has the Packers’ doing the various things they don’t do well, but randomizes them from game to game. Then, he can at least claim he’s trying different stuff each week.

  20. foundinidaho says:

Is this like Brent saying that a receiver “blew the pattern” when he missed a big pass?

    It seems about as self-deluded.

  21. Pack66 says:

Yeah…or like “Brent” saying that TT sucks…oh wait, that’s true, isn’t it, foundinidaho, you jackass?

You’re probably one of those un-grammatical idiots who say, “Democrat Party”, too…hahaha.

  22. Pack66 says:

    Aaron Nagler said,

“jack – funny thing is the Packers have only led the league in yac one year – 2007. They weren’t even close last year and haven’t come close this year. A lot of this is due to, yes, the way Favre and Rodgers throw and run the offense. There, I said it.”

…And don’t you feel better now, for having said it, Aaron?

    I know I do..

  23. CSS says:

Wow, what an awesome point Pack66. Favre’s teamates did lead the league in YAC during the 06′ and 07′ seasons when they had the weakest 2 year schedule of anybody in the league. And you know their downfall???? Your God, Favre, was among the lowest in the league in completing the intermediate to deep pass. Just sayin’…

  24. pack66,
How can you say to foundinidaho, ‘Let me take the poopstain out of your comment,’ when all the time there is a gigantic, steaming pile of elephant shit in your own comments? You hypocrite, first take the gigantic, steaming pile of elephant shit out of your own comments, and then you will see clearly to remove the poopstain from foundinidaho’s comment.

    except that foundinidaho is right.

but this answer from mccarthy really is in line with what i’ve seen as a strange sort of disconnect from reality. like maybe he should coach and call plays from a packer fan’s livingroom. then we could scream “RUN THE BALL” at him, and maybe he’d say – “oh. yeah. i guess i haven’t been doing that even though we’re averaging 5.5 yards per carry.”

    but really, it is strange.

  25. foundinidaho says:

    Joshy – thanks.

Pack66, if Brent said TT sucks, I heartily agree with him. As far as accusing the receivers, I saw the man do it. Until this year, I was the biggest BF fan you could meet. But I am a bigger Packer fan and I’m not cheering for a damn Viking. I don’t care if he’s St. Olaf.

As for the rest of your diatribe (oooo, big word, eh?), I’ve put up with your comments and opinion on these posts, much as I disagree, because, like any redneck Idahoan who says “Democrat Party” I think it’s a free country and you’re entitled to your opinion.

    As I am mine.

    So fuck you.

(Sorry Aaron and Corey, but really.)

  26. mopak65 says:

Back to the main issue – McCarthy sucks and can not bring this team to victory and the PLAYERS KNOW IT! He’s not fixing anything because the players have surmised he doesn’t know what he’s doing – and neither does Capers! What a joke! TT can not bring himself to admit that he has created and stepped into a pile of s**t! (at least publicly) – C’mon, a former second rate linebacker making top level decisions for one of the most storied franchises in NFL history – who’s
    kidding who??!!

  27. mopak65 says:

@joshy – You’re right – what does MM have against the run? I don’t believe in Grant but Green is a definite + in the Packer backfield and more utilization should be directed to the fullbacks to give added impetus to the Packers’ running game. This is football for christ sake – use every option that is available!

  28. NickGBP says:

    lols. “Pack66″ and “mopak65″.

Wonder if our Cheesehead overlords could confirm if these are from the IP address. I’d bet on it. Uses his Pack66 alter ego to let out his rage and then attempts to be somewhat level headed with his other name. WHICH IS THE REAL YOU, PACK66?!?!

  29. longtimefan says:

Pack66—-just can’t have a civil debate, the minute he doesn’t agree with something,or someone, he has to resort to grade school name calling.

  30. Ron La Canne says:

What’s going on here? Am I on JSOLINE Sprts blog?

  31. longtimefan says:

Pack66 also goes by Jeff Query

  32. Pack66 says:

    Oooooh…LT…You big, fat tattler…

Are you taking your ball and going home now?

  33. Pack66 says:

    foundinIdaho…

I’d like you to back up that statement, and PROVE that Brett Favre blamed his WR’s for running bad routes….(I mean, it is true, Schroeder and Walker ran the wrong routes alot).

But I bet you can’t come up with any proof that Favre said that….

This goes to the sh*t pile of myths and lies that have been built up around Brett Favre over the years…

  34. Jim in DC says:

    Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…
    Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…
    Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…
    Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…
    Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre…Favre.

    Whatever.
