"Maybe there should have been offensive pass interference called..."

Rob Demovsky has his annual question and answer session with McCarthy posted for the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Rob Demovsky has his annual Q & A with Mike McCarthy up and it is fan-flippin'-tastic.

This exchange caught my eye in particular:

Q: Going back to that playoff loss at Arizona, the refs told cornerback Charles Woodson before the game not to hold because they’re going to call him for it. Do you think that impacted the way he played?

McCarthy: “That shouldn’t go on, and they know that. You talk about communication, and now you talk about predetermining something before the game. Now if you want to give a guy a warning, but if the communication went down the way it did, we’re not looking for that because they’re supposed to call what they see. There’s nothing good that comes out of complaining about officiating. I think it’s an excuse. Do I like some of the things that go on? No, but it serves me no purpose. To me, it’s all about the end result. How am I going to prepare my team or handle situations that’s going to give us the chance to move forward and win games.”

Q: You aren’t a guy who complains a lot about officiating, yet in that game Woodson got thrown around a lot and maybe there should have been offensive pass interference called …

McCarthy: “Twice.”

Q: … and maybe there should have been illegal hands to the face on that last play. My question is, did you guys get screwed in that game?

McCarthy: “I would have liked if they would have called it. I would like to think that when I’m done with this business, I can look back and say it all kind of worked itself out. Sometimes you’re on the short side of that. Sometimes you get the calls. You have to live with it.”

Ok, first of all, when Mike McCarthy interjected with "Twice" he instantly became one of my favorite people in the NFL.

Second of all, I had totally forgot about the officials talking to Woodson before the Arizona playoff game. And then they go out and let him get manhandled?

This has pissed me off all over again.

That whole section stood out when I read that Q & A earlier tonight.

MM is absolutely PERFECT. The refs screwed us, but, to him, to the team, it shouldn't serve as an excuse. It wasn't only the refs that allowed 51 points.

That being said, like I mentioned last year, plain and simple, if the game is called fairly, we win it. We, as fans, don't have to mentally prepare our team for upcoming games. We can call it as it is. And, if I remember it correctly, you, Mr. Nagler, were quick to dismiss that notion, saying that the Packers were to blame, and not the refs, that "a better team would've overcame the officiating".

But, alas, you've "come to your senses". The Packers and the Cardinals were playing different games last year. It's not in the fairness of the game if you not only need to be slighlty better than your opponent to win. You need to overcome adversities that your opponent, for whatever reasons, doesn't.

This was my favorite bit:

Q: Speaking of all those weapons you have on offense, when you first got here, you said you wanted to be a run-first team …

McCarthy: “Well, we had a coach that gave some powerful speeches …”

Q: But you’re a pass-first team, aren’t you?

McCarthy: “Not really. . .

ROFLMAO.

Really loved reading that interview... and yes, that one-word interjection was priceless.

Really? It took 'THAT' to get 'OUR' Coach to be one of your favorite people in the NFL??? Glad you're on board with him now at least, better late than never. Welcome aboard. ;-)

From MM:
". We went into the [last] season saying we were going to stop the run because that was an issue the year before, and we were the best in the league at it. We’ve taken the same approach with the negative aspects of the 2009 season as we prepare for 2010, and we’re confident we will improve in those areas.”"

I made that point in the comments a few weeks ago. Im glad coach agrees ;).

Some people argued that the team didn't do enough gameplanning against the elite QBs, but it's more than that. It's about what you emphasize through training camp. The week of the game is way to late to be making any significant adjustments.

McCarthy's response was great, but I refuse to get upset by the officials. Useless Vikings fans whine about the refs; not Packers fans.

I re-watched that game about two weeks ago. There were plenty of "bad" calls against the Packers- not marginal- bad calls. It took 7 months for me want to watch the game again- upon watching it i had the same bad feeling.

Oh, I don't like re-hashing stuff from last season! That's all over now! Tomorrow we start fresh and hopefully we are all prepared to go and win tomorrow!!

First I heard about the warning to CW. I wonder what Rex Ryan would have said after coaching in that situation. Not a one word answer.
