Mason Crosby Misses Three Field Goals at Practice

Just when it appeared as if Mason Crosby was turning things around and righting the ship, he had a forgettable training camp practice on Wednesday in Green Bay.

While Crosby did miss three of four field goals in a drill late during the practice session, he reportedly did make one 43-yard field goal earlier in a game-situation period, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

In other NFL kicker news, two of the top free agents on the market signed contracts on Wednesday. Former Buffalo Bill Rian Lindell signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while former Miami Dolphin Dan Carpenter signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers hang on to marginal players way too long. Do they think they are miracle workers. I don't get it. Not enough intensity on this team.

Are we just going to wait until he blows what normally should be a high percentage kick with the game on the line in the regular season, before we cut him? Cause that's whats going to happen.

I like Crosby, but liking a player isn't enough to hold onto him. Missed opportunity here to bring in Carpenter for sure.

Place kicking is not football. I think MM and TT and a lot of other great football people get lost in the psychological, spiritual , emtional elements of a kicker.

Our kicker really appears to be not well and they have missed the signs. They hate to pull the plug for some fear of personal failure since they can't fix him like they can fix Vince Young.

Well forgive yourselves TT, and MM, it's not your fault. Where you may be blamed is by not making a change that none of us wanted but most see needs to be done. (fourth worst kicking % among active kickers)

I think McCarthy and Thompson haven't pulled the plug on Crosby becuz they know the kickers available aren't very good either. They won't make a move unless they're sure it'll make the team better. Other kickers like Carpenter and Lindell are more retreads and they don't think it would make the team better. Its the only thing they care about. What makes the team better?

I disagree, both are proven kickers, while Lindell is older and has a weaker leg than Crossbar and Carpenter, he is certainly more accurate than the former and cheaper than Carpenter. Carpenter is also an accurate kicker (career FG% in the low-mid 80s) and he has a strong leg to boot (pun intended).

Yeah but your not taking into account how difficult it is to kick at Lambeau. I would be willing to bet that the Packers have charts that say if a kicker is an 85% kicker at one place, it makes a correlation to how they would be expected to fair at Lambeau. It is THE most difficult stadium to kick in in the NFL and its not close. The winds swirl, its COLD, etc... Lambeau has been shown to be that difficult to kick in.

Soldier Field, Heinz, Candlestick, Gilette, Dolphin Stadium, and that dump in Jacksonville are all rated tougher, actually.

Ah, I don't remember where I read it, but Lambeau was like 6th or 7th toughest by average FG%, although that's a skewed stat.

Of course after a poor day today by Crosby they might be ready to make a change.

This league is rigged if Tavecchio loses the job

I'd be willing to bet TT put a call in for both of those veterans and they weren't interested. Look where they both signed. Warm weather. It's no secret that pretty much every kicker prefers a warm climate or at the very least a dome.

Wasn't the kicking competition kind of rigged from the beginning? They bring in a short weaker legged left footed kicker that's 2nd yr undrafted FA who didn't make a roster last year. Not really much of a threat.

I think this was just a move to try and rebuild Crosby's confidence and it didn't work. Time to call a spade a spade and move on, be it Tavecchio or another teams roster cut Crosby has to go.

Jerry Kramer's career field goal % was 53%. While that might land him a spot on the Packers in 2013- it isn't enough to get him to Canton another year.

Packers are doing with Crosby what the Brewers did with Axford. Hanging on to a struggling player who can single-handedly lose you games, because of blind faith that the past has no bearing on future performance.
