Emory Hunt day 3 guys.
Safety Xavier Bell Portland state
DT Darel Middleton Bethel (TN)

These are some deep dives that can only come from someone totally buried in watching everything in college football. Great stuff.

Emory's take on pick 15 ? DT Bryan Bresee, Clemson. Not seen him mocked to the Packers much, but it makes sense.

Bresee is interesting. The unknown with him is health and how teams view it. He tore his ACL in 2021 and dealt with injuries again in 2022. That medical history is significant enough, in a big man particularly, that some teams may not take him early at all. With the Packers being notoriously conservative, that bears considering.

Middleton is an NAIA standout with seemingly impressive technique who has been cited as one of the potential small school steals. Ian Marshall is another DL from that background —Northern State University—that I’d be happy to pick up.

If you want a UDFA wild card athlete prospect from the depths, try Cephus. Johnson III. 6’5”, 220. Can run, play QB, WR. In fact that was probably his downfall, never getting settled.

Johnson might have been the most impressive and intriguing of the group of quarterbacks from the small schools showcase

“A physically imposing player, Johnson showcased a set of tools that left scouts both gasping and salivating. There's not a throw on the field he can't make, and you saw him settle in more with each passing rep. Because he's a tremendous athlete -- who's expected to run in the 4.4-second range in the 40-yard dash -- he got a few reps at WR during the practices, a position he's played before at SLU. If you're looking for a deep sleeper of a QB prospect.”

Yes, I’ve only seen a few bits of film of him, but this is the stuff that makes the draft anticipation fun. I’d happily take a flyer in that kid.

I love Emory's takes, but I am forever confused by Bresee's rankings.

Measurements don't make plays. Where is his production? Where is the progression, the upward trending in his stats? They've gone down from his Freshman season, and I cannot see it. Jason Spriggs comes to mind... yeeeesh!

Football players. Yes.

Underwear Olympians? No.

Hard pass on Bresee for this fan.

There’s no upward trend because of health. That may not be positive but it is explanatory.

I am with you Green. The NBA constantly drafts players on potential. They love young players with high ceilings and average stats over older players who do have good stats to back up good play. Breesee has neither. He has done basicly nothing while at Clemson in spite of being the number one rated player out of high school. Picking him this high is a big gamble. You can't afford to miss with this high of a pick plus its about our 4th biggest need at this point.

Another discussion in another thread is related to this. Its on whether to draft Bijan Robinson with the 15th pick. RB is also not a position of need, but Bijan would do so many things for Green Bay by upgrading the RB position. It would let us move on from a good player we can't afford while being able to trade him for a decent pick. A double bonus.

Although I really want Green Bay to trade back for more picks and draft a top 3 TE with our first pick, it would make sense to draft Bijan. and its not a gamble. It would be a mistake to draft Breesee. Pass

I’m glad you shared your thoughts here, golf!

Been wondering, “am I the only one seeing no value with Bresee?” Thanks! Kind of feel same with Myles Murphy.

As for Bijon, the vale to GB would be lost with Jones & Dillon in front of him. Poof! There goes year 1 of his deal. Great player though who would warrant that high pick.

7 first round draft choices on defense now since Kenny Clark in 2016 and the 33 pick (1st of the 2nd round) on cornerback Kevin King.
And the defense is still average at best.

Meanwhile from CBS Sports:

"The Packers have the longest drought in the common draft era (since 1967) without selecting a running back, wide receiver or tight end in the first round. The last time the Packers selected an offensive playmaker in the first round was 20 drafts ago when they took wide receiver Javon Walker 20th overall in 2002. That drought ends in 2023. "

Last year the Packers couldn't score in the red zone (poor run blocking by Myers and Runyan and lack of use of a large bodied tight end) - both which anyone can see by studying "All 22"/"Coach's Film" for each game) and also did not have a wide receiver with the agility to break free 5 yards off the line of scrimmage.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba or Darnell Washington would be good picks at 15 - both were clearly at the top of their positions at the NFL Combine - if you watched the combine - we did.

I’m more defense for proven players who are vets. At least you know what you’re getting. Use draft primarily for offense and defensive player here or there to backfill for cheaper contracts for players aging out.

The lions at one point, drafted WR #1 three years in a row, also threw in a couple years of #1 TEs. How'd that work out for them?

If jsn is gone I hope they pivot to Darnell wright and secure d Bach’s replacement watch pack-a-day podcast today explains a lot . In second the hope is having 43+45 look for edge than tight end , best wr in third , double down on wr and te later also fifth rd or lower for a good free safety type of course these are just my best guesses but would make sense long term. I forgot we do need d line help that pick might sneak in somewhere

I see Emory wearing that Saints' shirt. Wondering how he felt his sleeper out of Nicholls St, Daijean Dixon, WR, played for the Saints last season. I saw Dixon get on the field, for NO, so they must like him.

I would really hate to miss a chance to pick a top 5 TE this year and take the opportunity to make TE a weapon for the Packers instead of just a player on the field no defense has to game plan for. The good teams in the NFL have good TEs and they use them. All 5 would fit that description and we wouldn't have to spend #15 to get any of them. The extra bonus is we trade back, still get the gamechanger TE and gain at least 2 more picks. Pick another TE in the middle rounds and one in the 7th. TE position will contribute as a strength. Something new in GB.

Green Bay could easily use this draft to rebuild multiple position groups and make them strengths instead of weaknesses. And getting younger, better and saving money. Start this process of making this a great draft instead of a good draft by trading back from #15, gaining more picks, and filling the biggest need that will make the biggest difference by picking a Top 5 TE with our first pick, at 20 or 25 or 32. Wherever we trade back to.

Is Bresee that much better than Gervon Dexter-FLA, That you could draft with a 2nd or maybe 3rd round pick. They look like identical players at the same position, only Dexter has had actual production in college vs. Bresee being all potential up to this point. Or can't you get the same with Keanu Benton? Brodric Martin gives you alot of the same in 3rd or 4th round.

Save the first pick we make for TE after a trade back in first. Maybe the Jets trade will be done soon and we will have more picks and some Jets players that could impact what positions we pick.
