Latest Jennings Interview Goes Beyond Joking, Implies Rodgers Disrespect

The back-and-forth between Greg Jennings and Aaron Rodgers appears to have been taken up a notch.

After Greg Jennings signed with the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason, there's been a well-documented back and forth between the wide receiver and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers threw the first barb when during the Wisconsin Sports Awards ceremony, Rodgers playfully responded "Who?" when asked a question about Jennings.

In several interviews since that time, Jennings has also jokingly declined to call Rodgers by name, instead referring to a vague "the quarterback" instead.

During an interview on ESPN on Tuesday, Jennings called Rodgers by name, but reading into his comments, one can infer that the back-and-forth banter between Jennings and Rodgers has an edge to it.

As summed up by NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com:

(Jennings) also somewhat cryptically said that "you get respect when you give respect" when asked why he apparently thinks more of Favre than Rodgers. The video is worth your time.

The interview in its entirety can be viewed here:

Packers fans, as based upon responses to my Twitter account, are asking whether any hurt feelings between the two stems from Rodgers not vouching for Jennings like he has other players on the Packers roster. A sampling:

The next step in the soap opera appears headed toward the moment when Jennings is bluntly asked whether he felt disrespected by Rodgers.

Observers might also point out the critical comments of Rodgers by Jennings' sister on social media last season as a sign that a beef existed between the two before Jennings left Green Bay as a free agent.

well he probably wasn't going to be booed that heavily when he came back to GB before this but now it might be Farve level booing.

I definitely don't think it will be that bad. Most people won't even know about this by the time the season comes around. Also, despite this, I'll always remember Greg's amazing plays and football smarts during the Superbowl - he was GREAT

What a horribly awkward situation. What did they expect Jennings to do? Admit that Ponder is garbage? I think Jennings did well to deflect that.

As for the Rodgers beef, it really does seem there is something real there.

Wait a minute. He also said Farve was the better QB. Even in Farves MVP years he doesn't have the stats Rodgers has put up. With that said who won Jennings a ring? Farve threw the damn ball right to Cory Webster in OT of the NFC Championship game, hmmmm imagine that. Rodgers took over and in his 3rd season starting put the Packers on his back and won a SB. Granted Jennings caught 4 balls, two for TD's but Farve doesn't make that 21 yard TD pass. Farve doesn't make that 3rd down pass, I'd bet my mortgage on it. The bottom line and I think some forget is Jennings was offered 10 million before last season. He was the greedy little prick he is and wanted 12. Ted, for good reason wanted to see if he could stay healthy and if he'd lost a step. He couldn't and he had. He took just a few million more because he saw the writing on the wall. Cobb was becoming the man and Jennings knew it was a matter of time ( this year) where he's the 3 rd best receiver on the field behind Nelson and Cobb. The greed is what gets me with all these "Praise To God" dudes. Just man up and be honest. I'm greedy and wanted what was a a few million more.

I'm referring to Nick and his summary of Greg "I have a check book that needs filling" Jennings. As I've said in other postings. Jennings was a football player. He was not a Packer. We need Packer players. Those are the blue collar hard working players that our boys in the head office make every effort to hire. Some are good, some not so good. But in the end, we get it right. We're there "in the money" more times than not. To Ted....good move with Jennings. Not worth the time or trouble. Watch us handle him in the next couple months. Look for Jennings to be one of two places. One, on the sidelines with an injury, or two, at the bottom of the stats list on receptions. Good luck Vikings.

He left because;
1)Younger guys need to be able to spread their wings.
2)Boykins' talent would have forced a change anyway.
3)He wants to do for/make Ponder into Favre and Rodgers as he takes credit for doing.
4)He wants the respect that wasn't given to him.
5)I wanted to be where I can talk like a fool and fit in.....Minn is the place to be.

Would Greg Jennings be the reciever he is today without the Green Bay Packers? Not just Brett or Aaron, but Ted Thompson is the person he should be thanking.

I really dont know how I feel about this. I really liked him while he played in Green Bay, but I dont think his choice to leave the team was a bad idea. I mean how many of you have left a good job for an opportunity to work elsewhere. As a Green Bay fan its hard to say he went to a "better job", but for him, he is getting paid more, is the top receiver, and is probably getting "elite" treatment. You can't blame the dude for taking more money.

The truth will be revealed on the field. If Ponder sucks like he is projected too, then its all good for GB. The real question is... Does James Jones get a new deal after this year?

Need to stay real.

Let's use suck as a relative term. Strictly in reference to the two QB's he's played with so far in the NFL. I would use a term like non-elite for Ponder. He may become a good QB, but he won't be A-Rod. They can hope for Romo-esque play from him, at best.

Most QB experts say that by 20 stsrts a QB has shown his ability. Ponder is well past 20 starts. He played pretty well last few wks last year. At best he's decent at worst he horrible a d maddeningly inconsistent. Still makes no plays and too many mistakes. Never be more than a decent QB.

Well Jake, Ponder is a QB that threw for less than 100 yards in 4 games last year. Against the Packers at Lambeau he didn't complete a pass to a WR until there was 3 minutes left in game and Capers went to his "Soft Zone", which we all know is designed to neither stop or slow a team down. I don't this Strohs or anyone else who made comments about Ponder are to far off. Jennings is greedy, PERIOD! He was offered 10 by the Packers at the beginning of the year. He wanted 12 million. Then all the tweets about warm weather and Miami came out from his sister. Miami didn't want him. Philbin who knows him as well as anyone didn't even talk to him. Jennings already knows he made a huge mistake and now is acting like a little bitch. I had long respect for Jennings, hated to see him go even though I knew he'd lost steps (multiple) and had become a injury prone WR. The Vikings are the only team other than the Packers that wanted him. New England found out what he wanted and it stopped there, no talks. That my fellow Packers fan, speaks volumes.

This is the most he'll ever be, without the arm strenght.

All the elite QBs have great arm strenght.

If he stays healthy, and that's a BIG IF, Jennings will catch maybe 60 to 65 balls for less than 1000 yards, nothing special. How many times did we see Packer receivers leave for more money never to be heard from again (Freeman, Walker). The Green Bay Packers are a receiver friendly team, the Vikings are not. Hell, Sidney Rice had one good season as a Viking, and that was with Childress and Farve. I love Jennings and what he did for the Packers while hear but he won't be half the receiver there, not with AP. I look at it this was. If Williams can hold Brandon Marshall to 8 catches for 80 yards and one TD he'll shut Jennings down. Either him or Hayward but no way do Rodgers teammates let him get away with this.

Thanks TRVS. Very smart. The PACKERS make great receivers, not the other way around. The rest of the league is still catching up to that concept. It's the core team and the leadership. It's the principles. The way of life. The fans. Oh, the fans. You can buy players and advertise players, but believe this.....when all is said and done, we will spend our money not on stats, not on wins, not on celebrities, not on venues, not on hype, not on merchandising, and not on man made comebacks. We will forever support the team that works from the start, to bring football to the families who support it. Moms, Dads, daughters, sons, and every conceivable branch of our families. Others claim it, but the heart goes to GB. There is one team that has it all. That's the Green Bay Packers. Go Pack.

1) If GJ is miffed that #12 didn't go to bat for him then he is not recognizing a very basic fact: this was #12's contract year too. It's easy to talk about how important it is to sign someone else when you are already locked in for a few years. Much harder when you are competing with that guy for the same dollars.

2) If you read in to GJ's sister's comments (which I did, and for which I was slammed here by some) then this is a long-standing issue and good riddance.

3) Is this the NFL or WWF? Let's move on.

Wow..I'm really surprised by this. Maybe Greg feels that Aaron didn't give him star treatment the way Brett might have? But I agree that it probably has something to do with not vouching for Greg publicly and also the amount of praise given to Cobb - making Greg feel disrespected. ALTHOUGH, the money needed for Jordy Nelson/James Jones' contract extensions was nothing compared to what they needed to sign Jennings. I respect Aaron for not cornering the Packers into a situation where their star QB is publicly calling for them to sign a WR, when the team has other, possibly better, long term plans.

Rogers is his own man. He wants to be like himself. I don't think he gets up every morning and tailors his day to strive to perform like someone else. Ironically, since he is setting milestones himself, he probably would want a new guy to follow his performance, not those that he superceded.

What is up with these grown men needing validation...as if their on the field accomplishments don't speak for themselves???

Aaron isn't the type to state the obvious. At his best, Jennings was a top 5-ish WR...no need for Aaron to come out and state this. Jennings was paid fairly well during this period.

Once the contract was near its end, Aaron saw the writing on the wall, and had already said he was done playing GM after the James Jones talk. Younger, cheaper, healthier options are on the roster, and Aaron wasn't going to push for something he knew was largely fruitless anyway...he's just not the disingenuous type.

It then follows that if Jennings (and others) didn't think that Rodgers was a douche, TT wouldn't be cheap. Also, Justin Harrell.

Taken individually you can easily shrug them off. Taken collectively, along with the imfamous tweets from his sister, and it's impossible for me to believe there isn't something here.

I don't get worked up about it, though. To me it makes the rivalry even more fun ,especially since we all know who wins in the end ;) .

No Stroh is correct...almost. I believe it was 10 million offered and Jennings WANTED 12 million. Ted told him that he'd lost his mind and feelings were hurt. It got worse when Philbin didn't even speak to Jennings, especially after the tweets by Jennings sister about warm weather and South Beach. That told the rest of the NFL Jennings is slowing down and can't stay on the field. Clearly that's not far off, he had no other interest at all. A call from New England, but not a visit and a desperate Minnesota, that's it. If I was Jennings I'd just shut my mouth. The fact that NO ONE CALLED should tell Greg everything he needs to know.

All the while, they tried to make him a Packer. But in the end, he was just a football player. He counted pennies. Don't need to comment on the aspects of taking care of business, taking care of their families, taking care of their "business. That's not what I am talking about. He's not a Packer. He has no place on the team. He's a loser and the packers did right on letting him go.

Although I think there's a little bit of animosity between Jennings and ARod, I really didn't see much of it here (his sisters texting is more revealing). In fact I didn't think Jennings said much of anything inappropriate. So he likes Favre more than Rodgers. Big deal. He thinks Ponder and his team will be good. Well shouldn't he?

What is bizarre is Baylesses never ending disdain for Rodgers. Seriously, it's so out there, that anyone watching can see how utterly stupid the whole spiel is. Does he not realize how cartoonish he sounds. My advice to Bayless, drop the antiARod schtick and try to actually add something to the topic.

Greg Jennings "Who" and he says Rodgers is overly sensitive. Its apparent he didn't find that very funny no matter what hes said on the subject in the past, he clearly felt disrespected by that comment.

Whether there's more to that feeling of disrespect I don't know and neither does anyone else. Its probably a good bet though that Jennings sisters comments on twitter had something to do with the "Who" comment but we can't know that for sure.

Since we're talking frivolities, that is the uglies outfit I've ever seen. Just the combination of that purple shirt with that thing he calls shorts. I like to think it's Jennings' way of making fun of the show.

In regard to the discussion, it solely exists for the purpose of fomenting discussion. It would be a big deal if they were 5 year olds. And, let's face it, Rodgers does act like a 5 year old in that regard sometimes. But for crying out loud. Let's act like adults, people.

Also, not going to miss his big smile after dropped passes; I'm sure Rodgers won't either. Jennings best days are in his rear view mirror.

They did just fine without him when he was injured last year. Jennings has been banged up the past couple of seasons and could get hurt again this year. Not worried about WR depth, would rather have 10-12 million go to other areas of need. Jennings WAS a good packer, but he's gone, get over it. I'm not loyal to any one player, I've been a Packer fan since I was 6yrs old ( 46yrs) and I'm a native northern Californian. Live in 49'er country. I hate losing to the 9'ers.

"did fine without him"

With Jennings in 2011 ... 15-1 with a 35 point per game average.

Without Jennings (9 games) in 2012 ... 11-5 with a 27.1 point per game average. (over a TD per game difference)

There are other reasons they scored fewer points in 2012 but missing Jennings was defintely one of them.

Ha. So much unnecessary hostility, dude.

I just think comparing two different seasons brings too many variables into consideration (as you admitted).
I don't think comparing stats from the full 2011 season (in which Jennings played 13 games) to the full 2012 season (in which he played 8 games) really tells us anything.

I think the fact that the Packers had almost identical points per game and passing yards per game in the 8 games with and the 8 games without Jennings (an equal sample size) is very telling. Which is not to say he won't be missed to some extent.

Fact is the opponents figured out how to slow down the Packers offense after the KC game. Packers had trouble throwing the deep ball and Rodgers has to hold on to the ball too long ( 51 sacks) Oh yeah, they couldn't run and the defense wasn't very good and was terrible on 3rd down. Those were a bigger factor for the loses than missing Greg Jennings. Don't be pissed at me because you have a Jennings jersey hanging in your closet.

Here, I even crunched the numbers for you. Just a few FACTS for you to start your day, if you will.

With Jennings in 2012 (8 games): 25 ppg with 254 passypg.

Without Jennings in 2012 (8 games): 29 ppg with 251 passypg.

Now, it's true, Jennings played some of the tougher defenses last year (49ers, Sea and NYG). But he also played against some of the weaker defenses (NO, Ten, Det). In fact, Rodgers' lowest yards came with Jennings, 148 against Detroit in week 14. So, I think the quality of opponents is more or less a wash in the end.

But, anyway, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on what that all means.

Hey thanks, I appreciate the effort.... But ... come on ... you have to admit you're cherry-picking your numbers.

My original post was simple. ... "You’ll be singing a different tune if any of Jones, Nelson or Cobb go down."

This will be true no matter what numbers you offer.... The WR corp is no longer as strong as it was. ... Everyone after Jones, Cobb and Nelson are suspect. ... Quite a few devout, long time Packer Fans believe this... I happen to agree.

Cherry picking how? What other numbers do you suggest I include?

And I'm not addressing your comment about the strength/depth of the WR corp in 2013. Of course it's thinner than it's been in years past. And of course if Cobb, Nelson or Jones goes down for any extended period of time, the Packers will suffer.

What I am addressing is Jennings specifically and your comment about how the Packers offense has performed with and without him. In 2012, at least, they didn't miss a beat. What that means for 2013 remains to be seen. But based on last season, my conclusion is that if the top 3 stay healthy (plus Finley), they'll be fine.

Thoughts?

Jake... just cuz players are unproven doesn't mean tbey csnt play. We still have a strong WR group. And lets drop Driver from consideration he was passed by Boykin last year. Only real loss is Jennings and he misses 1/2 of last year zs evan pointed out we were as effective wo him as we were w him. Now there's just more opportunities for young players. We are a draft and develop team which means letting older expensive leave for younger cheaper versions. Lots of athletic talent in Boykins Ross Johnson and dorsey!

Forums are monitored. Good forums keep the discussion on football. There are rules and protocol at forums. Even the page set-up on a forum is superior to any blog. Plus, there happens to be some pretty good analysis on many Packer or NFL forums.

(I hope you're not suggesting we all turn to twitter for our football fix ... now I'm laughing)

They lost ONE receiver. Jennings and he was good, but there plenty of other good options. Driver is addition by subtraction, he did NOTHING last year.

Boykin moves up a spot, he was ahead of Driver end of last year. Add the draft picks, Quarless as another TE option that did exist last year and I have no doubt someone will step up and claim the last spot or 2.

Jennings missed 8 games. Nelson missed 4 games. Cobb missed 1 game. Jones played all 16 games.

Boykins moved up ahead of Driver and managed a whopping 5 catches for 27 yards.

Quarless?? Quarless is a TE and has little effect (if any) on who the 5 or 6 WRs will be on the final 53 man roster.

Last I checked TE is an eligible receiver and alot of people think Quarless will breakout thisyear. Either way there a lot of athletic talent in the young WR.

We are draft and develop team after all. The time was right to move on from Jennings and Driver should have been gone a year ago. He provided NOTHING last year!

THat may or not be true, but I would say its not true. Packers offered Jennings 8M last year when he was talking to the viqueens. Can you honestly say that if Jennings takes the 8M contract that Finley would still be in GB? I seriously doubt it... It was one or the other. If Jennings stays, Finley is released, and since Jennings declined, Finley is still a Packer. While WR and TE are separate positions, they are tied in terms of receivers. A strength at one, might mean you go lighter at the other. Look at NE they put a ton of money in TE's Gronk and Hernandez and let Welker go to get a cheaper version in Amendola.

Driver was the key to their success , but wasn't used to give others a chance to succeed. Having said that, he would brought the packers to where they wanted to be. I read an article that said Driver would return only to the Packers if they really needed him. Stay in shape Donald. We have a great corp, but if needed, we'll call. Maybe put another ring on that finger.

Your last two sentences may be correct, but dude was awesome for us. His SB performance for us was huge. There's no way we get that fourth ring without him.

"Jennings missed 8 games. Nelson missed 4 games. Cobb missed 1 game"

And still they won football games.

The Packers offense will be fine.

Yeah it's July, and it's a soap opera, but when "I'm loyal when I have to be" came out of GJ's mouth, I was pretty saddened. I always thought he was a standup athlete; now he's just another jock.

Almost too bad that training camp starts soon.
Might take attention away from important stuff like this.

I don't know why people get so upset with this being a topic of conversation. What else are we going to talk about during this period of the offseason? There's not a whole lot else going on.

I feel like it's people being afraid to confront an uncomfortable truth and wanting to cover their "ears" and say LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALA".

You can acknowledge that there's some juice behind this and still love Greg Jennings AND Aaron Rodgers. Enjoy the rivalry. It's going to fun!

I am totally unafraid to confront the ugly truth that GJ's trousers are the real controversy here. And it doesn't make ME mad at all.

Was Greg Jennings' outfit an intentional jab at the credibility of the program or was it just an unfortunate choice of clothing?

Purple blouse: I get it. Vikings colors.
Multi colored pants/shorts/capris/whatever: I can offer no help in GJ's regard, but I myself would have only worn them as a joke or on a dare.

I still think this is more WWF b.s. than juice. You look at the totality of GJ's comments, and there is plenty of respect there. You can't call BF and all-time great on the one hand, and then immediatley say when AR came in there was not drop-off on the other hand, and then at the same time not respect the guy. And Skip Bayless is a moron.

BTW - GJ showed Boykin a lot of love. When you boil it all down GJ basically said that Green Bay won't miss him half as much as the Vikings will be glad they have him. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

In a slightly different direction, when did "respect" come to the forefront with football players?

I never liked Jennings. He caught passes. He was a footbal player, but was never a Packer. I always suspected he had a hidden agenda. Now is a Viking. And he is less of a football player because he is not on the Packers. I can't even say good luck to him. Just get off the team. Oh, he did. Bye.
