Kicker Ryan Longwell Will Retire as a Member of the Packers

Kicker Ryan Longwell will retire as a member of the Green Bay Packers, general manager Ted Thompson announced on Monday.

Longwell is the all-time leading scorer in franchise history with 1,054 points.

Other records also held by Longwell include career field goals (226), field-goal percentage (81.6, 226/277), seasons leading the team in field goals (nine), extra points (376), 100-point seasons (eight) and consecutive games scoring (144).

The first nine seasons of Longwell's career were as a member of the Packers, but his last six years were spent with the division rival Minnesota Vikings.

Longwell's decision to retire as a Packer comes as timely, given the recent news surrounding Brett Favre, another former Viking who would appear to be in the process and returning to his roots.

The decisions of Greg Jennings and Desmond Bishop to sign with the Vikings this season also plays into the rivalry even further.

Some observers might point out that Longwell, even at 38 years old and entering what would be his 16th season in the NFL, would be better than the current kickers competing for a job on the Packers roster: Mason Crosby and Giorgio Tavecchio.

Maybe Greg Jennings will do the same? oh wait, he hasn't shut his mouth yet. At least Longwell did.

I am an observer and I too will point that out. Crosby has the fourth lowest kicking percentage among active kickers. How can that cut it?

Maybe instead of a 1-day contract he wouldn't mind a 1-year deal.

I mean, it's a joke. But the more I think about it the more I really like the idea of a guy who is super dependable from inside 40 yards - maybe that would then force McCarthy to go for it more often on 4th and short when they're around the 35-40 yard line. Then just let Masthay kick off.

(But before they cut Crosby, make him teach Masthay his onside secret.)

We already know his onside secret. Aim to split the uprights.

I always liken a former Packer finishing up in Minnesota to when aging European stars finish up in MLS because they can't hack it in their league anymore. Good to see that Longwell knows what's what.

As a packer fan I think there should be a law any player who plays for the vikings after packers "CANNOT RETIRE A PACKER." End of story especially Ryan Long well. And B something?!
