Kampman Signs With The Jaguars

Godspeed Aaron.

It's good sport around the Packers Blogosphere to say that I 'hate' Aaron Kampman. Nothing could be further from the truth. I've been a fan from the day he was drafted and watched as more talented players fell by the wayside, while Kampman just worked longer and harder than everyone else. But the thing I always admired about him was just how incredibly bright he was. You could see this on the field on Sundays, when he would be diagnosing plays as they happened, even early on in his career. In the end, the Packers evolved on the defensive side of the ball in a way that just didn't suit the tools Kampman brings to the game.

The man is truly 'Packer People' - and I hope he's incredibly successful down in Jacksonville.

Definitely agree with you about the intelligence. Always enjoyed listening to his locker room interviews for the same reason. It'll be nice to be able to "cheer" for an ex-Packer on another team again after Brent. I never would root for other teams to do well...but the Jags are so irrelevant I'll watch them a bit and hope he finds success there.

Kampman is the definition of Packer people. Best of luck!

Who hates Kampmann? I don't think I've ever read such a thing on the internet. He didn't work out in the new defense, so, he's better off somewhere else, but that's a far cry from hating him. Best wishes on your new team, AK. :)

Living here in Pensacola FL and having family in Jacksonville it will give me a reason to watch the Jaguars. Kampman will be missed, a true professional athlete. For his sake I hope he got a big pay check, Jaguars are a long way from being a contender. Surprised he sign with them, not a team like the Eagles who are more likely to play in the playoffs.

I am surprised he went to the Jaguars, Kampman could have signed with any team. Jaguars are a long way from being a contender. He must have really hated playing OLB, unless the Jaguars doubled his salary, the Pack offered him 20 million for 4 years and a playoff/super bowl contender.

I thought he would have gone to a team like the Eagles because they are playoff team or Seattle who seems to be on the move. The Jaguars are a team with many problems with no solutions in the works. Interesting.

Kampman was great to have. Things just don't always work out. And I'm sure Kampman will be much more successful and happy in Jacksonville, a team that actually would be able to utilize his skill set. The best of luck to you Mr. Kampman. You'll always be remembered fondly in Cheesehead Nation.

I'm not a Ted hater, but it is a shame that we didn't trade him last year. I guarantee you that Bill Belichick would have pulled the trigger. We could have a good pick in what is being called one of the deepest drafts ever.

To some extent, I agree with madden07. I don't recall reading where any scouts thought Kampman was going to be a natural fit for the 34. Although I don't know if New England would have been the ones to trade for him since they play a 34, too. Sad to see Kampman go, but frankly he's getting older, he's coming off knee surgery, and he is not great in our new D. He's been an overachiever his entire career, and I hope he has a great run with Jacksonville. Poor guy has lived in IA and WI his whole life...can you blame him for wanting to live in Florida?

Taking Kampman in the 5th round was the only great draft pick from the Sherman era, although Barnett in the first and Wells in the 7th have been solid.

Jacksonville is in a rebuilding mode, kind of like the Jets in '08. They are highly likely to pick up Tebow. Two guys with great attitudes. Jax will benefit greatly.
The Jags have been one of the teams mentioned as relocation options to LA. So they need to get the fans excited.

This could well be the stupidest anti-Thompson rant yet. The bottom line is Kampman is a 4-3 DE, and we don't run that defense any more. Ooh, let's give him $30 million because he's a nice guy. Brilliant!

Nothing but the best to you 74.

This is one instance where I have to hold Ted's feet to the fire. We should have traded him last year. Even if he wouldn't have looked like a fish out of water trying to stand up... he wasn't gonna be a long term answer.

If you remember last year, how standoffish 74 was after he learned he was going to switch positions in a 'contract year'... He said all the right things (ALWAYS does), but you didn't have to be a genius to read between the lines there, HE WAS PISSED.

If Ted would have taken 74's attitude into account and coupled that with a touch of foresight, we could have a fairly high draft pick in hand right now. Ted dropped the ball.

There was little depth at OLB last year. If they traded Kampman (before drafting Matthews or Brad Jones) who was going to start, Poppinga and Chillar? They aren't pass rushers. And Jones was definitely not ready to start at the beginning of the season. Kampman didn't work out at OLB but they didn't have any options.

If Kampman hadn't gotten hurt in 2009 they might have been able to tag and trade him like Corey Williams. At least they'll get a comp. pick.

I understand everyone's resentment TT not trading him a season earlier but I have to ask, how can you call him a "fish out of water" without testing the guy out under a full season? The same can be said for the other players who had to make the transition. How did you know Jolly would perform well? How about Woodson, couldn't he have just as much risk as Kampman of not fitting into the new D? Face it, if you're transitioning defenses you need at least 1 season to filter out the players who you know can fit and who can't. Unfortunately for the packers, Kampman had to have his contract expire this season. There's no way of getting around it, and it's the truth.

"Tee Tee, the scum, could have “matched” the offer…or bettered it"
.
Pack66, Are you truly that clueless?
.
Aaron Kampman was an UNRESTRICTED free agent. That means that the Packers had absolutely no leverage to keep him in Green Bay. To have what's referred to as "First right of refusal", or the option to match or better another teams offer to ensure the player stays with the team, a player must be a restricted free agent, or have a tag placed on them.
.
For all any of us know, the Packers DID offer to match the contract. It's not likely, but the point is- even if they had offered AK double the money, Kampman controls his own destiny- he could pass on the contract offered by the Packers and sign with any team under any terms he deems acceptable.

‘Do Nothing’ Ted Ensures Packers Youngest Team
Written by: Tim

March 5th, 2010 10 comments Sorry for the absence guys but I just needed a few months off after the disappointment I witnessed in person in Arizona.

Its good to be back, and I see that Thompson is already sticking to his guns this off-season, resisting the urge to both sign free agents and retain those players headed for free agency. For those who said that Thompson’s penny pinching ways of the past were in preparation for the uncapped year of 2010, this clearly poses to be a letdown as their very intelligent theory is contradicted. I, for one, would like to have a GM interested in investing in the team, but don’t say, ‘I didn’t warn you’ that Thompson is not the right man to build a winner.

I think I understand, now finally, Ted’s game. Keep the team young, ditch your veterans, sign nobody over 27. That way when you crap out of the first round of the playoffs, people will say “But we’re the youngest team in the league, we have so much future potential. We’ll get it done next year.” Well played sir, you’ve fooled half of Wisconsin.

I’m all for fiscal conservativeness in government, but it has no place on a sports team, where competitors in your own division have been able to build deeper and more talented teams.

Should be a fun (and by fun, I mean boring) offseason.

So with the finality of Kampman signing with another team was the switch to the 3-4 worth it? Kampmans skills and leadership will be sorely missed, I think we defiantly saw it in the Steelers and Cardinal games already last year. It will be interesting to watch Mathews to see if he continues to be as productive in his second year, as now other teams will be game planning for him with a year of tape. IMO we are not as far along with this defense as everyone thinks, gaining Mathews and losing Kampman we really have not gained anything, IMO next season comes down to how well Capers coaches, getting more from our current talent pool.

Dilgaff - Depends on who you're referencing as 'everyone' in your sentence: "......not as far along as 'EVERYONE' thinks...."

If memory serves, the primary reason/rationale for transitioning to the 3-4 defense was to stop the run and minimize possession time for the opposing offense, thus placing the ball back in the hands of Green Bay's potent offense.

Secondly, it was to allow the flexibility of multiple looks making it more difficult for opposing offenses to prep for.

My 2 cents: They not only accomplished the primary goal of stopping the run, they exceeded expectations with that facet of the defense all season. Also, everybody knew this was a roster devoid of the pass-rushing linebackers necessary for a truly dominant 3-4 defense.

So, I'm not sure who 'everybody' is, but they're mature beyond what I thought they would be considering: a) the primary objective. b) the talent available on the existing roster.

I say the switch to 3-4 was without a doubt worth it. I've always loved the complex, attacking-style of the 3-4. Most people say the transition usually takes about 3 years and I think the Packers are way ahead of the curve on that. Find a compliment to Matthews and the pass defense should catch up with the run defense in 2010.

--

And losing Kampman is not that big of a loss since everyone agrees he was entirely miscast in the 3-4. I certainly don't think the Steelers or Cardinals game would have ended any differently had Kampman been playing.
---
The Pack may well miss his leadership, but they're not a team devoid of vets, especially on defense. I'm sure Pickett or Harris or Woodson or Barnett can more than make up for any leadership void left by Kampan's departure.

All I know is that Rapelisberger, Warner, and Favre carved up the 3-4 pretty damn good...and I'm sure there were others...(Giving up 500 yards in the air multiple times is not a good thing...and were there any SACKS last year? I don't remember too many).

I wouldn't be too proud of that...if I were you! hehe

And Everyone knows that Teddy Boy is in "love" with linebackers...(too bad he's not good enough to draft those who will make an impact.)

CSS, I agree with your point on stopping the running game, but we could not stop the passing game against the better talent. I like the 3-4 defense but I think we are still a year or 2 away from being a consistent dominate defense. If Mathews has a sophomore slump, Jones struggles opposite and Hawk/Chillar/Bishop continue to struggle at the ILB position, our defense is in for long year, no matter who is playing in our secondary.

Dilgaff - 1-2 more years before we're consistantly 'good' is about right for a transition. I'm not sure if there was anybody out there, beyond the casual fan, that thought the 'complete transition' would take anything less than 3 years.

From my perspective, CB is the biggest issue. This defense will EXCEL if we have consistant CB play that allows playmakers (Woodson and Collins) to press the line of scrimmage. You've seen what Woodson can do, now imagine if another flexible/good CB and/or dominant SS are on the roster allowing playmakers to, well, make plays. I think we're 'fine' with the LB's we have. Can it stand an updgrade, yes, but they are more than functional in this defense.

Getting Woodson and Collins at the line of scrimmage or underneath is key to making this 'D' dominant in 10'.

CSS, it would not surprise me if our defense either starts slow in 2010, or has a repeat of a 2008 performance as we make this transition.

IMO the continued growth and success of this defense rests with the LBs. We are not returning 4 or 5 year veterans with solid performances in this new scheme. I have high hopes for Mathews, but the possibility of a sophomore slump exists, Hawk/Chillar/Bishop had their issues last year and we are looking at a rookie or Brad Jones with only Poppinga as a back up.

Not only did Kampman not make the transition but Thompson and Poppinga don't look like true OLBs either, considering a 7th round rookie beat them out.

I view the LBs more important than the secondary, as in a 3-4 defense they are key in stopping the run and pass, no matter who is playing in our secondary. We are on shaky ground with our LBs, even if Barnett and Mathews play well.

Jan. 4, 2003 - Favre sinks like a lead weight, reserving one of his worst performances of the year for when it matters most in a 27-7 loss (20 of 42, 47.6%, 247 yards, 5.9 YPA, 1 TD, 2 INT, 54.4 rating).

Jan. 11, 2004- Favre tosses a pick in overtime to lose choke away the game, season low 180 yds on the day.

Jan. 9, 2005 - Favre turns out a gruesomely disfiguring playoff performance (22 of 33, 66.7%, 216 yards, 6.5 YPA, 1 TD, 4 INT, 55.4 rating

Jan. 20, 2008- Favre completed 4 of 10 passes for 32 yards with 2 INTs in Q4/OT, Pack lose.

Jets - 2 TDs against 9 picks when it mattered most down the stretch, killing the Jets playoff hopes.

Jan. 24, 2010 – INT to lose it for the Vikes when they need him most.

Packers were in essance 'Favred' during Brett's 84 INT's in this time period.

Somewhere there is a heartbroken toolbox with a great big, gaping space on its top tray. Make that toolbox happy. Go home, IQ66...go home to your toolbox.

Hate to see that moron (I refuse to use my favorite Packers' number) wants to ruin what shoiuld be a tribute to great Packer who is a class guy. I will miss Kampman. I, for one, hope he has an all-Pro year. If anyone can recover from a devistating injury and play well it's Kampman. Good luck Aaron, I'll never forget you. If he ever plays at Lambeau again, I will be the first one to give him the standing ovation he desrves. No whiny Cry Baby He!

As far as the A hole goes, CSS your synopsis of Bent's failures was awesome. And his intellect was put on display with his pathetic attempt to compare most of us who support and enjoy the Packers with a political party. It made no sense what so ever and just proves that amoebas now have access to the internet. As most of you know, I have many issues with TT but if you have a brain you also have to admitt he has done many things right.

I think we need a new thread. My suggestion: Matt Flynn, his long-term potential, the Browns reported interest in trading for him, what the Pack could get for him, and would the Packers look at a veteran backup and, if so, who out there is worth looking at.

Rick Spielman...36-28, in 4 years, one playoff win, aided with Ziggy's deep pockets, let's drama queen call the shots. After the job the TT has done cleaning up Sherman's mess, and building with the draft, I'll take Ted over Spielman any day.

hyperRevue, what do you think Flynn is worth, 2nd round pick? Although bang for the buck there is a pretty good case in keeping him, unless a 2nd round pick or higher could be gotten.

Man, I have no idea. A 2 strikes me as really high for Flynn's limited experience/exposure - what did Hasselbeck bring in return? A 3 or 4 seems more realistic. If the Pack could get a 2, I'd jump on that in a second.

-----

For Hasselbeck, the Pack swapped 1s with Seattle and got their 3rd round pick. Hasselbeck, I guess, had a longer resume even if it was all preseason but Holmgren knew him first hand. So, it's not a perfect comparison.
