Kamal Martin to miss several weeks after knee injury

ESPN reports the rookie linebacker is having surgery soon.

From Rob:

Martin was having an excellent camp, making this sting all the more for a Packers defense that is in need of the playmaking ability he flashed throughout the last two weeks.

With Martiin sidelined for the forseable future, expect Oren Burks to see time next to assumed starter Christian Kirksey in the middle, although this could push defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to lean heavily on his three safety sub packages.

Rob has move over at ESPN.

This is really sad to me, as I was stoked as hell to see Kamal start next to Christian Kirksey.

The good news is that the team has stated it is not season ending. Just guessing here because it fits that timeline, but hopefully just a partial tear of his meniscus, which would put his recovery time at about 4-6 weeks post surgery. I'm guessing that is what happened. If he had a full meniscus tear, recovery time would extend out 3-6 months. I wish him well with his surgery and hope that Kamal Martin is able to return to play more freely and without pain.

Guess it could be cartilage removal too, which also fits that shorter timeline (6-8 weeks). We should know more shortly.

More likely an MCL tear. Both carry about 3-6 week recovery. MCLis just much more common than a miniscus or cartilage tear, and in the long run better for the athlete. Hope for MCL.

Tough break for Martin. Lets hope this isn't a precursor since he had a knee injury last year at Minn.

Per Ian Rappoport this is a 6-8 week injury. Poof just like that, the positive vibe about our line backing situation goes from positive to tenuous at best. Kamal Martin was coming off a knee injury last season. This is an ominous start for his NFL career.

Hard to say without knowing what procedure he's having done. Maybe that 6-8 week timeline is to get him back to game action? I bet that's what this is, and that he's having a partial meniscus tear repair via scope.

With a relatively quick recovery time, that would be our best case scenario.

Meniscus injury. Of course, that clarifies nothing. Oh well. Just sucks.

Kirskey is still an improvement over what they had last season.

True Aaron but one more injury especially to Kirksey and....that would leave a huge void. Did I mention Kirksey his own injury history? I think you understand the concern.

Sounds like a scope to me. A full tear and repair is often season-ending.

Tough break. Everybody was positive. I said if his knee holds up. It didn't.

I was hoping to make it through TC without injury. Tough break for Martin. I was looking forward to seeing him play based on the reports we have been receiving about him from CHTV.

I wish him a full and quick recovery. I hope that he can return and make a difference on the Packers defense this season.
Thanks, Since ‘61

They can go with Kirksey and The Raven. Burks is an unknown.

Probably will be released with a injury settlement , a good camp doesn’t translate to a good season especially a rookie with no game experience

Unlikely. Short term injury, relatively speaking, for someone who was -- and will be -- an immediate contributor.

Martin is not a proven player his college film looks good but how much can the Packers invest in him now , an injury settlement is probably best so as to not take up a roster spot. I like him but just bad luck.

I knew this was coming with KMart, too many injuries at U of M.

Is anyone surprised that Burks missed practice? This guy makes Nick Perry look like Ironman.

Id assume in the next few days Gute will trade for someone elses camp body ILB again.

Too many injuries at Minnesota?

He was injured ONCE eight games into his senior season, but still made honorable mention All Big Ten.

Please enlighten us on these "too many injuries". I can't find mention of it anywhere.

Thanks, I missed that.

But he still played 8,12,12,8 games in his college career. He played in 32 straight games from the beginning of his sophomore year until 8 games into his senior year. Not what I would consider to be injury prone.

I hope he recovers soon. He seemed to be having a great camp.

This is obviously bad news, and I wish him a very speedy recovery, and a long and productive career moving forward.

That being said, I don't agree with the consensus here that our run defense is as big of a concern that many here believe.
Last year 6 of our wins came against Minnesota (twice), Dallas, Carolina, NYG, & Wash. We beat those teams by a combined score of 153-94. Five of those games we held the opponent to 16,16,13,15,10 points, with a high of 24 to Dallas.

The featured running backs for those teams and their 2019 stats: Yds/Ave/TDs

Dalvin Cook 1135/4.5/13
Ezekial Elliott 1357/4.5/12
Christian McCafferty 1387/4.8/15
Suquan Barkley 1003/4.6/6
Adrian Peterson 898/4.3/5

We also played and defeated Seattle in the playoffs, with one of the best dual threat QBs in the league. I have felt along those SF games were outliers. That certainly needs to be corrected. But the belief that if we play teams with very good running games, we're going lose because of ILB personnel is a false narrative. That's not how our defense is set up.

Ya that worked out well. The next coming just became the next leaving. Do we know about his injury history at all. Usually the so called diamonds in the ruff are in the ruff for a reason and top talent evaluators dont miss many tricks. Thus, rare to find exceptional talent just sitting there. Better hope our current crop of backers can get the job done because last year they couldnt. Teams will run on the Packers, wide for sure, to test the speed of the team on the outside.

Kirksey has had an injury also it was reported on twitter and not much was said about him by Nagler , I said it last year Oren Burks will be the starter expect him to get run over like a rag doll week one most teams will be run heavy to start the season, the Packers will pay the price , They y need to bring Clay back .
