Jermichael Finley to Receive Instruction on "How to Break Into the Music Industry"
The Packers tight end will spend four days in New York mid-March, just days before he's scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus.
Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley will spend four days from March 18 to 21 attending the "Business of Music Boot Camp," a program offered to 20 current and former NFL players put on by NFL Player Engagement and the Clive Davis Institute in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
According to a press release from the NFL, the program is described as "a crash course on how to break into the music industry."
Players will attend interactive workshops focusing on all aspects of the music industry including production, artist development and management, digital music, publishing, marketing and touring.
“We are excited to again offer our players a program with NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, which counts some of the biggest names in the music industry as faculty,” said NFL senior vice president of player engagement Troy Vincent.
The program ends on March 21, six days before Finley is reportedly scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus from the Packers, according to Tyler Dunne of JSOnline.
At that point, Finley's fate for the 2013 season will basically be sealed. If the Packers elect to pay his bonus, they'll effectively be making a commitment to him for at least 2013 if not beyond.
It's a possibility that the Packers could choose to either cut or trade Finley before that time. Either scenario would wipe his $8.75 million salary cap figure off the books.

I bet you don't have a problem w/ Rodgers being in the music business do you? Whats the big deal if he wants to have an outside interest?

Once he and Rodgers got the chemistry back that was lost, Finley did take care of business. I expect a very good year from him in '13 and making the Packers decision a very difficult one after the season.

My main concern with Arodge is stat whoring and passing up open guys underneath to hold the ball 8+ seconds looking for a low probability play deep.
But yeah, I did think that was kind of dumb. I don't worry about it being a distraction as much as I do with Jermike though. I also wasn't as worried about Robert Brooks doing the same.
Jermike? Could distract emphasis from on-field priorities. You don't think so?

OK...I've gotta say this story, or the chosen title at the very least, comes across as either pouring it on or not having a very good grasp of typical reader mentality.
How many posters above me now think Finley wants to be a rapper or other type of music artist?
This could have easily been avoided by saying something just as simple and more clear, such as..."Finley to attend NFL's 'Business of Music Boot Camp.'"
How many have dumped on Rodgers for having a music label? Unless there's more info here...nothing to dump on Finley about here either.

Headlines do paint a quick picture in people's minds. We have to be smart enough to set aside the initial reaction. Some of us will not be able to on any given day, depending on the topic, our mood, etc. We all do it at some point or on some level.
I've commented on this before, usually when it relates to politicians or political issues. The only thing I can say is that it is often far worse in your average daily newspaper. Many times you'll even find contrary information stating the exact opposite of the headline, but usually you will not find it until after the half-way mark in the story. I bet a lot of folks never make it that far, or they are only paying half-attention to what they are reading by that point.
The media peaked when guys like Walter Cronkite and Ted Koppel set the standard for the industry. Guys like Woodward did their homework before they went to print. In our wired world being first is more important than being accurate - even for the traditional media outlets, and whatever comes out first tends to be perpetuated. Otherwise, the media would have to admit they got it wrong. This is not a right/left problem, this is an industry problem.
