Jermaine Johnson NFL Draft Prospect Profile and Scouting Report

Name: Jermaine Johnson

School: Florida State/Georgia

Year: Sr

Position: Edge

Measurables: 6’4 5/8" 254 lbs.

Stats:

General Info:

Johnson attended Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. He ended up at Independence Community College in Kansas. He collected 19 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles, and 12.5 sacks in just 20 games at Independence. The team was featured on season three of the Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U”. Rated the #1 JUCO defensive end. Johnson transferred to Georgia for the 2019 season. He played in every game with one start. He collected 20 total tackles, three tackles for a loss, 18 pressures, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. For 2020 he played in seven of the team's 10 games, starting three games. In that season he had 16 total tackles, five tackles for a loss, 11 pressures, and four sacks. The former Bulldog then transferred to Florida State for the 2021 season. Once there he started every game where he earned ACC defensive player of the year and first-team All-American. On the season he recorded 70 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 46 pressures, 12 sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Johnson has good size and length with elite athleticism. He has a variety of pass rush moves; a swim move, rip, arm over, chop, spin move, and a shuck. He has strong hands to shock back blockers. Johnson is already a very good run defender. He constantly gets in the backfield for tackles for a loss or causes the back to have to cut back. The former Bulldog has experience both in a three-point stance and a two-point stance, has played on both sides, and even seen some snaps inside. Johnson does a good job of pressing the edge with his speed. He plays hard from snap to whistle and will chase backs down from behind. The former community college standout also shows great awareness of where the ball is, he rarely loses track of it. Johnson has a strong upper body despite weighing 255 pounds. He pushes the pocket with his strong lower body and keeps his legs churning. There are a few instances of him dropping in coverage at Georgia and he looked ok doing it. Johnson has also shown a bull rush on film. The former Seminole has shown flashes of stringing moves together. He has also shown flashes of a push-pull move. Finally, he is a very good tackler.

Weaknesses

He does come high out of his stance negating his explosiveness. He is a bit older of a prospect, at 24 years old. His pass rush moves could be quicker. He could also be better at stringing moves together; he has shown flashes of it. His spin move could be good but needs work. Johnson wasn’t asked to drop in coverage at FSU. Also, he could use some work on his counters. Johnson needs to play a more disciplined he can rush up the field too far and too fast and end up leaving a big gap for the quarterback to escape or step up into to buy more time.

Fit with the Packers:

Johnson would be a great fit with the Packers. He has all the requisite skills that they look for in an edge defender. He has good size, long arms, explosive athlete, and can effectively play both the run and the pass. He has the athleticism to do some short zone drops and has shown flashes of it on film as well. He will be a little on the older side for a rookie than they typically like (24), but he showed he still has some untapped potential at FSU. He would be a good #3 edge rusher who could give both Gary and Smith a breather on any down since he’s shown that he is a threat against the run and the pass. Johnson has also shown he could be used inside on passing downs because of his strength and his ability to use a bull rush. He could spend his rookie year refining his pass rush moves and year two could take over as the starter next to Gary.

I doubt he makes it to #22, but if he does, Gutey should probably take him, depending on who else is on the board.

High on him before the Senior bowl. Then he dominated there and flew up the boards. Georgia liked him enough to sign him. Unfortunately for him that team was stacked with Def talent. If he was to inexplicably drop to #22, I'd think the Packers would take less than a minute to put that card in. Sadly, not going to happen.

Wouldn’t hesitate. NO trading with PHI, and needing WR, OT & QB… could help a little. That might put picks 16 & 19 on the O side, dropping him down at least 1 slot. 4 QBs projected R1 might help too. Could see unexpected D gems drop into our laps at 22 and 28.

I like him as a prospect, BUT he's built a little slight below the waist. Reminds me of Sweat , which is not bad, and an old Packer pick also from FSU Reynolds. I'm pretty sure JJ doesn't have any lingering injuries like Reynolds did, but still built along those lines.
I have heard that the LSU CB may fall into the 20s and if he does Green bay has him pretty high on their list. Came from player development guy at LSU. True or not? Have no idea. Just what I heard, and let's face it...it's the season for lying.

God, I hope it is not true. The one thing that would make me drop my peanuts is if the Packers used another premium pick at CB. And I remember Jamal Reynolds - that was a reach pick that did not pay off.

He's not good enough! It's just that simple. He wasn't good enough for Georgia. He won't be good enough for GB. Let's compare him to BURNS. You know the guy that Gutey passed on for Gary. Burns was a little faster. But his other qualities, were a much higher Vert. And better Broad. Anybody know the 3 cone? Well burns ran 7.01. So based on measurements, and how successful Barns was. Gutey really should pass on him. Georgia had speed. Speed he couldn't crack. Was it his attitude? I think you're over estimating him.

NFL.com has him as the 13th overall player. The Draft Network has him at 8 overall, ahead of Travon Walker...

Suffice it to say you're way off-base on this guy.

In fact, the only way Gutey has a chance to draft him is if he trades up.

Charles Davis has him going 7th overall to the Giants.

Do you know where NFL.com gets their info.?? It's connected to Lang. Al Jersey could do better.

Are you drunk? (Nothing wrong with that, and it would explain a great many things...)

Lance Zierlein does almost all of the "Analysis" at NFL.com and while I love "Jersey Al," you have no idea what you're talking about 50 percent of the time.

Are you talking about TJ Lang? I thought he was a sideline reporter for the Lions?

I know Ojabo will have a better career. And Walker will too.

I've always like Walterfootball and they have Johnson rated as the 5th best edge rusher - Hutchinson, Walker, Thibodeaux, and Karlaftis ahead of him. But they also say many NFL teams consider the difference between Johnson and the top two to be very small.

Birddog, thank you for giving some third party reference to where this guy stands. To me, he doesn't look like a guy you give up a late one and two for to move into top ten. GPG!

stockholder, I don't understand your reasoning, brian Burns, is a pro bowler, who has 25.5 sacks in the first three years.

Far be it from me to know about the draft and top prospects but I have read that literally 40 to 60 different players won't be available at picks 22 and 28. I have a hunch some of those predictions will be wrong. I'll wait until after the draft to see if this hunch was correct.

scoonie, it’s hilarious, and guilty as charged. I try so hard to stay away from that too.

Weird shit happens in drafts. I love watching teams ahead of us make mistakes. Every single one increases our odds of getting a player we felt might be out of reach. Surprises can drop in their laps all throughout. Thinking some prime D players do just that with the Packers on the clock at both 22 and 28. We’ll see.

I watch all 3 days like a kid at Christmas. First live coverage was on this new thing called Cable TV in 1980, on this channel that covered sports and nothing else. Billy Sims was the #1 overall pick, back when running the rock was a thing… I’ll never forget it.

What a world us “ boomers” entered into…

Joel Bushsbaum generally out-performed the Scouting Depts with his picks.

I do know one thing... There will only be 21 guys drafted before Gutey does, unless he makes a trade.

So true, and none of us will be surprised when Gutey drafts someone in the first 4 picks, where we all go, WHO?

I like JJ's size and speed.

My caution is he has only one year of productive football and that came as a true DE with his hand on the ground in a 4-3. When asked to stand up at Georgia, he could not process and make plays. I would dig into his football smarts. Obviously was not a good student having to spend two years at JUCO.

At FSU he was told to pin his ears back and rush the passer and got home...but in run defense he missed too many tackles.

He would again have to stand up as a Packer and that makes him a boom or bust decision for Gutey.

He's a 4-2/4-3 guy as a DE. As you stated pushed around in the run game, Not asked to cover. Played for Mike Grant at Eden Prairie HS.
