Jennings Deal Almost Done. So Who\’s Next?

Obviously, this is great news.

Much is being made about the possibility of Jennings becoming the second highest paid wide receiver in the league. That may seem surprising until you realize that currently numbers two and three on that list belong to Antonio Bryant (via his franchise tag) or T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Armed with that fact, Jennings coming in behind Larry Fitzgerald makes perfect sense. Naturally, the contract will seem quite different when the actual numbers make their way out into the light of day. But at first blush, the Packers have done right both by Jennings and by the club. (Of course, only in Packer Fandom could news this good be  turned into a reason to rip Ted Thompson. Go look at the comment section in the second link above. Just who the hell are these people? Thompson gets untold amounts of grief for never spending any money, and then when he signs arguably the best player on the roster to a contract extension, all these so called fans can summon is bile. The mind boggles…)

Now, of course, comes the next question for Ted Thompson and the Packers. Who’s next?

Obviously, the obvious answer would be Nick Collins. But for some reason, I don’t think we’ll see any movement on Collins’ contract any time soon. Both he and Kampman need to show how they fit into the new scheme before Thompson starts thinking about extending their deals. I would look for some second-tier players such as Daryn Colledge or Will Blackmon to get looked at before either Kampman’s or Collins’ contracts are addressed.

this is great news. Greg is a great guy, just watch any interview and you can tell he is. Let the bile spewers remember the six week run in 2007 that put him on the map and played a HUGE part of BF’s single MVP vote. That was a ridiculous stretch

Jennings gets his deal by being a team player, keeping his mouth shut, and peforming at a very high level for three years.

Collins you jerk, are you listening? After four years of inconsistent play, you warrent little extra attention. You’re already overpaid at $3 mil. I say, TT get the Lombardi vs. Ringo story out and leave it on the desk when Collins and his agent showup.

Good for Greg Jennings and great for the Packer future.

Great news…glad this got done. Now I feel convinced that converting my closet into a Greg Jennings shrine was a good idea.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone have a hair sample? Ask Bedard if he can get that done for us.

Oops, who’s next? I really don’t think there is anyone that needs attention right now. Maybe Kampman, but he needs to show how he is handling the OLB job. Colledge needs to prove he can play a full year at a high level. He has been inconsistent at best in his first 3 years. Am I right thinking that Williams signed for two years? Bigby, maybe, if he can demonstrate he returned to 2007 performance levels. Sorry, Donald as much as I like you, you have a contract and you’re paid well.

Hey Aaron, love your site. BTW, I completely agree about a lot of “fans” in the comment section. I really wonder if they are emotionally stable. I get embarrassed for Packer fans.

I am so happy to have Jennings signed. Great job by Thompson!

However, I wouldn’t sign Collins to a big deal. He is not really a big time safety.

Thanks for the kind words jrarick. And completely agree on Collins.

i’ve noticed over the past year that the comments section on both the milwaukee journal sentinel online and the green bay press gazette are terrible. so many trashy comments from crazy people. which is why i always check cheezehead tv first.

Those idiots aren’t Packer fans, they’re Favre fans. Pay no attention.

  9. Jayme says:

They aren’t even Favre fans. Their fervor for Favre goes beyond the fanatical and extends into zealousness. They are Favre zealots.
