Jenkins Returns To Practice

Cullen Jenkins was back on the practice field today after missing the last month due to a calf injury.

Defensive end Cullen Jenkins, who missed the last four regular season games with a calf injury, was back at practice. Though he was listed as "Limited participation" on the official injury report, he fully participated in team sessions that were open to reporters.

From McCarthy's post-practice press conference:

Cullen Jenkins practiced today. We’ll take the week to see how he feels. He went through the team periods. Really how he responds from the practice will be the biggest key, but he’s making progress.

The return of Jenkins would obviously be a major boost to a pass rush that was already getting after quarterbacks and would no doubt give Dom Capers another chess piece to move around the board trying to contain Michael Vick.

It will be HUGE if Jenkins can play, and play effectively. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Anybody heard about Johnny Jolly's ongoing NFL exile? How he's doing? Plans to return after suspension? Wouldn't it be sweet if he was knocking heads on the D-Line right now? Rotating Pickett, Raji, and Jolly to keep everyone fresh? Of course, that would probably mean that Green wasn't on the roster, but it's still fun to wonder.

Well, hopefully this is a case of no news being good news. He was given 160 hours of community service and a year to stay out of trouble in exchange for avoiding trial on those dubious charges. The packers clearly like Green, but I do hope they give the guy another shot if he can stay on the straight an narrow (literally: narrow. a lot of those big guys have trouble not ballooning when they're out of the game). He might not be perfect packer people, but I'd like to seen the Jolly Green Giant play for the Pack again.

If Jolly is cleared by the NFL, the Packers would drop Green yesterday to have Jolly back in the D-Line rotation.

Any chance the Packers make Jolly an offer assuming he's eligible to return?...and, ya know - there's football next year?

Wow, really? I thought Green has been pretty effective in his role. What would Jolly be bringing to the table after a year off?

I agree with PackersThad, out of shape and over weight are concerns. He still has no pass rush and Green seems to be filling the void adequately.

He is a risk, makes some decent money and he is good for a year, then goes down the wrong road again.

Still would love to know all the details of his case to get a year suspension without any previous known offenses.

Jolly is clearly a superior athlete to Howard Green, much younger with much more up side.

Jolly has the ability to pursue laterally, and I don't know where others are getting the "he has no pass rush ability" thing from. He's a DE in the 3-4, who played on the strong side of offensive formations. It's not typically a pass-rushing position. For that matter, I don't think anyone thinks Green has pass rush, either.

Let's also not forget the Packers run defense was #2 in the league last year, with the only real shift in personnel being the loss of Johnny Jolly. Yes, Raji and Pickett swapped positions, but I think it's more than coincidence that run defense has dropped considerably with Jolly's absence. Add in his uncanny ability to tip (or intercept!!) passes at the line, and block kicks, and there's a lot of reason to reinstate Johnny Jolly. IMO, having Jolly, Raji, Jenkins is the line for the near future, with heavy doses of Pickett to play situationally and spell Raji, Neal in 4 down linemen situations in the interior next to Raji, in 2-4-5 alignments, and as depth for either DE spot in base, and Wilson as the developmental player and depth. If Wynn keeps up with the way he performed vs. the Bears, he might demand a spot somewhere, somehow. But Howard Green, while sound, doesn't have the talent or long term upside to unseat any of the above.

Word has been that Jolly IS keeping out of trouble, and IS keeping in shape with personal trainers at a professional sports training facility, from team mates who have visited him. Hope for the best, on this one.

zub,

He didn't get anything trumped up. You don't get caught with that amount of codeine just anywhere: he was dealing or delivering a controlled substance. I agree that he has talent, but even on the field, he was displaying signs of "thugness". I hope that he gets re-instated, and the Pack trades, releases or just doesn't re-sign him; then he goes to an AFC team and excels. He is not Pack People, may be overweight, and is not football ready.

Good luck Mr. Jolly.

I agree the kid seems to be a jerk, but he's a good football player with talent.

I'm hoping his run in with the law, though a slap on the wrist, is a wake up call that the NFL and the money it brings isn't a right, it's a privilege, and he gets it together and stays out of trouble.

His position coaches all have said that Johnny absolutely LOVES the game, which sort of shocked me a bit. That love coupled with the lifestyle NFL contracts supply might be enough for him to make changes.

And, the Packer People stuff? It's great that TT has assembled a relatively humble and family oriented group of guys, but let's face it, you have 60+ young men under contract.. They aren't all going to be pleasant, nice young men. Especially in a society that coddles and entitles gifted young athletes. Packers People is half myth and selective reporting.

Please don't forget that Donald Driver was a self-described "drug dealer" when he was younger.

Is Donald Driver not Packer People now?

Sometimes, people need something to jar them out of a lifestyle.

Nuances of his personality aside, the interesting thing about the charges is in the way state law in Texas deals with controlled substances, like Codeine, and their different forms. A while ago the state decided (I believe originally it was with regards to cocaine in the form of crack)that police officers could simply weigh the total mass of the confiscated material and apply that measurement to the amount of the illicit material. Perhaps not such a big difference when it comes to crack, but very unfortunate for Mr. Jolly. The arresting officers were able to weight the drink that they confiscated from Jolly; cup, sprite, jolly ranchers and all; and say that was the amount of Codeine of which he was in possession. Obviously a substantial difference. This was a big part of why his trial went on for so long, Jolly was fortunate enough to be able to hire some very good defense attorneys who cried 'Bullshit!' In my humble opinion, the suspension was somewhat deserved, but the charges were certainly 'trumped up.'

Like P.O.C. has enlightened us (me), Jenkins being back will be a huge boost to the run as well. Primary force player, was that it?

And as far as rushing the passer, Matthews, Raji on the best form of his life, Jenkins, Walden, Woodson... How do you handle them?

Just imagine if we had a healthy Mike Neal in the mix, too..

My good lord, was he a pleasant, if not completely unexpected, surprise.

Anyone else remember a rookie D lineman making that much noise? I saw him being TRIPLE teamed towards the end of one game.

Beast.

+1.

I whole-heartedly agreed with Nagler when he listed Neal as the 3rd most substantial loss behined Finley and Grant.

The kid needs to stay healthy and he can make some serious noise.

Great to have Jenkins back. We can really use him this week. Jolly won't be able to petition the NFL for reinstatement until after the Super Bowl. But it would be nice to have him back next year. Also, Did you see that Erik Walden was named NFC defensive player of the week?

Awesome talent, but the Packers have to weigh in the fact he's had nagging type injury issues almost every year lately.
