Jenkins and Chillar Get Work At OLB

Both Cullen Jenkins and Brandon Chillar were taking some snaps at outside linebacker during today's practice.

Nice little tidbit from Pete Dougherty during today's practice:

The packers have talked about using DE Cullen Jenkins as an outside rusher at OLB occasionally and have him working there some today.

Later on, during team work, we got this:

In "big okie" 3-4 personnel, DE Cullen Jenkins took first snap at OLB with No. 1 defense in team drills

As well as Jenkins moving outside for some snaps, we also got this:

ILB Brandon Chillar getting some snaps at OLB in jog-through also.

Using Chillar outside? Whoever thought of that is pretty darn smart... ;)

Wonder what Jenkins thinks about this?

I'll bet he loves it, actually.

They're looking ahead to his contract expiring. Dude wants some sacks. He's pretty athletic, though.

Well, this is the "Big Okie" formation. That's where there's only 2 defensive linemen, right? So basically, he's unlikely to drop back in coverage...

Point taken. But not a linebacker in the conventional sense then?

Big Oakie replaces a Safety w/a linebacker. There are still 3 DLs.

So in this version there are 4 DLs, 4 LBs and 3 DBs? Raji, Pickett and Neal. Jenkins, Matthews, Barnett, Hawk, Chillar. Woodson, Williams, Collins?

Or instead of subbing Burnett for Chillar, he just subs Jones for Jenkins, and keeps 4 DBs? Like a base set, but with a heavier OLB?

3 Linemen, 4 LB (which Jenkins would be classified as in this set) and 4 DB's (which Chillar would be classified as in this set). That's the way I understand it?.?.?

So Cullen would still considered a Lineman although he's upright @ the LOLB position? And Brandon still a LB although he's @ Safety?

Interesting.

I try to learn something new every day. That may be something I exclude from the bank, no offense. If a tree falls in the woo... If a LB is playing safety, isn't he a safety... I'll chalk it up to semantics.

To me, it seems like this would probably just be a 4-3 setup with Jenkins off the line a little. Do we really think he'd have a snowball's chance in hell of covering anyone?

When you look at this it makes sense, we lack true depth at OLB.

Who knows we may cut Poppinga to open up a roster spot for say 3 full backs if we know Chillar and Jenkins can fill in if Mathews or Jones goes down. WE may want to keep more defensive lineman, who knows.

I think the coaching staff is just being smart here.

They try Jenkins there, but not Bishop. Interesting.

By the end of TC, we'll see Charles Woodson at NT and Mike Trgovac at SS. Count on it.

It's always nice to be able to link back to predictions/suggestions you were right about. Clearly the coaching staff is reading your stuff.

I like it. At least get a couple snaps of this sort of thing on tape in the preseason, give teams something extra to worry about!

I'm kinda bummed that we're not hearing much about Obiozor, like we were last year. Maybe when the pads go on, he'll turn up the heat... But it doesn't bode well, my bet is they're counting on both Poppinga and Obiozor to "make the jump", and provide decent/good relief for the OLBs...

I don't know if that's good or bad. By most accounts Breno has looked pretty decent so far. Could he be in the mix still? I thought it was a foregone conclusion that he would be sent packing.

And I'm with you RS, I hope Obi turns it on come camp. I'm over Poppinga. Period.

He apparently stoned him on one play. Great. I'm not paying attention to anything the lines do until training camp. Talk to me when the pads come on.

I agree Aaron, all this moving around is just an exercise. Once the players have pads on and are actually in contact, then we should discuss interesting position changes.

But on the positive, at least we have something to talk about...
