Jacob Schum Remaining In Green Bay

Reports state that  punter Jacob Schum will sign his exclusive rights tender and remain with the Packers

It appears Jacob Schum is staying put in Titletown. A year after supplanting long-standing Packers punter Tim Masthay, Schum, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, will be retained. It was later reported by Ryan Wood of Packers News that Schum will sign the exclusive rights tender with the team expected to make an announcement next week.

Schum, who was claimed off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 30th, 2016, had what could be described as an up and down first year in Green Bay. He averaged 43.4 yards per punt, downed 19 inside the 20 yard line and had a long of 65. He performed well in the playoffs, especially the final two games, in which he averaged 54 yards per punt.

Schum, 28, is an exclusive rights free agent due to accruing less than three pro seasons. The team has until 4 p.m. New York time on March 9th to formally submit a minimum qualifying offer. As Schum looks to build upon his first season in Green Bay, it will be interesting to see what happens come time for training camp based on the way things unfolded last year.

Bring in another punter to put pressure on him, but there are worse things than going into a season with Schum as your punter.

The initial report was that Schum was set to receive a multi-year deal with some guaranteed money. I developed a small twitch after reading that initial report. Just signing the ERFA tender of $450K in non-guaranteed money is not a big deal. I am sure that we will tender Joe Thomas as well, though I suppose it is possible that he gets something longer.
