There's no guarantee that the Eagles will agree to let McDermott interview with the Packers though, right?

There's no guarantee, but Thompson and Reid go way back. Hard to believe they haven't communicated in some way to see what Reid will do. I think he let's McDermott interview.

It appears that MM's top two choices both had offers and went 'another direction'. Not a good sign at all. Maybe this is why they didn't fire Moss, they needed an 3rd option.

DaveK - Why is it not a good sign? Nolan wanted to stay closer to the West Coast and Williams was never serious about the Packers. He used their offer as leverage in his negotiations with the Saints. As I've pointed out before (as have others) McCarthy shouldn't be married to the idea that he has to get someone with coordinator experience.

McDermott or someone else on a playoff staff may have been their top choice all along. Who knows. If that's the case they still would have wanted to interview these other guys.

I think it is a bad sign because MM clearly wanted both men and both went elsewhere. It appears it went beyond just interviewing the two and it has been reproted that M.M. offered both contracts. I don't think it is ever a good thing when his top two choices, for whatever reason, pass on his offer to join his staff. He either has to settle for his 3rd choice or hope that a better candidate becomes availible soon which is no guarantee. That all being said - I think he probably finds someone better then Sanders.

How do we know these were to two top choices? Did McCarthy even **offer** either of them a job?

I'm still waiting to read that there was an actual offer on the table.

DDD - agreed, though I fear that the lack of info on any potential offers may be due to the Packers ever-tightening control of the info that comes out of 1265 Lombardi...

Maybe. But wouldn't Williams agent run to the media to start a bidding war?

Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part (because I want some other guys to be the "top choices") but I'm just not convinced that Nolan and Williams were the top guys.

Again, remember 3 years ago when supposedly Brad Childress was the Packers number one option for HC. I never bought that and I'm don't buy that Nolan and Williams were the top choices. Not without something more to go on.

From the Pete Dougherty chat yesterday:

Q: Did the packers offer nolan and williams a contract.

A: Yeah, officially or unofficially, both had offers.

DDD - From one account, Williams did go to the Saints w/the Packers offer to drive up his asking price...

As of yesterday, we’d heard rumblings that Williams received an offer from the Packers and was shopping it back to the Saints. If true, the Saints apparently upped the ante.

It looks like Haslett is not getting the HC job in St. Louis per PFT. I've got to say I wouldn't be very excited if he ends up in Green Bay.
