Look, I understand. Players want to maximize their value to a team, and they have a limited amount of time to make as much money as the can before they begin their inevitable decline. But Ryan Grant has started 12 games. 12. Not even a season. And people are already talking about extending his contract? To be fair, it’s not Grant, and it’s not even his agent starting the conversation. No, it’s a journalist, inventing news so there’s a hint of controversy that will help sell newspapers (or drive traffic, to use the parlance of the times). Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press Gazette took it upon himself to call Grant’s agent and ask about Grant’s contract for the next two years. And Grant’s agent answered him, saying, as any good agent would, that Grant is underpaid, which he no doubt is. But the team will take care of him.
Articles like Dougherty’s start things. Already, people like my friend Steve over at PackerGeeks are starting to have opinions about what the team should do in regards to resigning Grant. Hey, he’s a blogger, it’s what we do. But it disturbs me because it’s not reacting to a real story. It’s a manufactured story by Dougherty, and already the likes of ProFootballTalk are doing what they always do and spinning it ever so negatively by using the headline “Grant Looking To Long Term Deal”.
Well, no, he’s not actually. Pete Dougherty called his agent looking for comment. THAT’S the story. Grant has nothing to do with it, and we should remember that before the media tries to blow it up into even a mini-controversy which they are sure to do. (I put the over/under on NFL Total Access doing a bit about Grant wanting a new contract at two days).
Ted Thompson and the Packers will take care of Grant. Period.
