Is there a Gold Jacket For Ted Thompson?

Will Ron Wolf protiege Ted Thompson follow in his footsteps and don a gold jacket?

As Ron Wolf donned the Packers 23rd   gold jacket, I sat back and wondering why the Packers have gotten so fortunate in the last 20 years.  While as quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers rightly frontline the Packers resurgence and continued excellence, a lot more credit probably has to be given to the men who laid the foundation for their success, namely Wolf and his protégé Ted Thompson.

With Wolf rightly being added to football’s greatest, I wonder if Thompson will be able to mimic Rodgers and follow his predecessor into the hall of fame.  Obviously Rodgers and Favre are essentially first ballot hall of famers, but getting in as a Hall of Fame contributor is a lot more opaque.  Wolf is only the 3rd GM to be inducted alongside Bill Polian, who was also inducted this weekend.

From a straight numbers perspective Thompson and Wolf match up quite favorably; both are well known for their scouting acumen with multiple stars on their record books; most notably, each managed to strike pay dirt with a superstar quarterback who was the best in the league at their peaks.    Both worked their way up from the bottom as scouts and saw success with other teams before making it to general manager.   Both also compiled similar winning records during their tenure with Wolf winning 65% of games under his watch while Thompson has done slightly better at 67%.  Of course, the biggest point of all is both are Super Bowl winners, with one a piece (Here’s hoping Thompson can make it two).  If winning was the only issue, then Thompson should probably make the Hall of Fame alongside Wolf.

While Thompson is quite humble publically, his results are not.  While Reggie McKenzie, John Schneider and John Dorsey are all Ron Wolf disciples it was actually under Thompson’s watch that all 3 became GMs.  Thompson is also likely mentoring possible future GMs in Alonzo Highsmith, Brian Gutekunst and notably Elliot Wolf.   Everyone talks about Rodgers having to replace a legend but really Thompson had to do the same as the true successor to Wolf.  Rodgers replacing Favre was the embodiment of Thompson replacing Wolf and not even Rodgers faced as much criticism as Thompson did in 2008.

However, Hall of Fame contributors aren’t judged simply by their statistics.  Perhaps what makes Wolf so special is the story rather than the results.   Wolf took a team who had only seen 4 winning seasons and one caveat post-season appearance in the 20 years previous to a perennial contender even after his tenure.  There was talk that the Packers could no longer be profitable in the small town of Green Bay and would move permanently to Milwaukee.  There was the argument that Lambeau field was too small, too old.  African American players were hesitant to sign with Green Bay due to the racism that plagued the team.

Personally, I don’t think Thompson will get into the Hall of Fame.  His story is simply too boring, which is maybe how he likes it.  There’s no suspense, no rags to riches plot.  Thompson was given a good situation and kept it going.   With all that said, Thompson is not just riding the wave started by Wolf; the Packers were starting to fall back into the pit under Mike Sherman and it was Ted Thompson who made sure the Packers remained great.

He will get in IF he wins another 2 Lombardis for sure. And I think that's possible with ARod and MM.

1 more? eh... mayyyybe.

None? No way. Like you said, the story similar to Wolf's just isn't there.

Regardless we are a blessed bunch of fans to have these men running our favorite team.

I was typing mine when you wrote your comment. I didn't mean to be repetitive - but great minds, and all that.

As to Thompson's chances of induction, I tend to agree with you, but a couple of SB victories could change that calculation.

I love Ted, but I don't think there should be many more GMs in the HOF. Wolf managed a franchise re-birth, and Ted inherited a team with a HOF QB and many of the same scouts Wolf hired. Ted is a great contributor to Wolf, but there ain't no assistant coaches in the HOF either. When they build Packer world, they can name the place the parent sit and watch their kids after Ted.

I believe Thompson's track record is better than Ron Wolf's, but I don't think he gets into the HOF because there aren't that many GMs that get there. Wolf completely changed the trajectory of the franchise - Thompson has taken an already successful franchise and made it even better.

Wolf made three splash moves that resonate well: 1) the hiring of Mike Holmgren, 2) the trade for Favre, 3) the free agent signing of Reggie White. And, he reversed a culture of losing to one of winning. His drafts were good, but not great.

Thompson has made his living from a whole bunch of great things that add up - drafting Aaron Rodgers, hiring Mike McCarthy, getting Favre out of town and allowing Rodgers to begin his career, and a whole bunch of great draft picks. I don't think the average football fan understands the sad shape of the Packer roster when he took over and so I don't expect that the HOF voters would either.

In 2015, I would take Thompson over Wolf as my GM.

People forget the bad situation Sherman left for Thompson. They were in cap hell and Thompson had to clean up the mess he inherited. Another thing that isn't mentioned is the job Thompson did in Seattle. Holmgren had the titles behind his name, but Thompson deserves as much credit for getting Seattle in the SB as Holmgren.

Regardless of all that Wolf, as you said so eloquently, changed the trajectory of the Packer Franchise. Thompson inherited a good team, that was in steady decline in GB due to Sherman's mismanagement, but it had some pieces to work with, primarily Favre and Ahman Green. But Thompson didn't change the franchise, the structure and system for the personnel dept was all in place, carried over from Wolf, thru Sherman (tho he deviated too much), on to Thompson.

Wolf put in place so much that has carried to Thompson's regime. But a couple more Lombardi Trophy's will alter the discussion quite a bit.

The thing I like about Thompson the most is he's his own man. He'll never bow to pressure of signing high priced FA's and sticks to his beliefs with DAD. He played the game and worked his way up the ranks. The man knows football inside and out. No one will tell him how to run a team, and that's why he's successful. He's a unbelievable cap manager and puts a team on the field every year to compete for a championship. When you have superstars on the rooster its not easy to do. One more SB and he should be a lock. That's coming in SB 50, if they stay healthy.
