Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?

Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?

The best bit of news the Packers got on Monday was the return of cornerback Tramon Williams to practice, albeit on a limited basis.

Here's a look at the walking wounded in Green Bay...

Returning to Practice

Cornerback Tramon Williams, knee

Commentary: Williams didn't take part fully in practice, but for a team that's hurting in the secondary, this can only be classified as good news. With safety Morgan Burnett and cornerback Casey Hayward sidelined by hamstring injuries, the Packers are in the need for reinforcements in the defensive backfield. There's no guarantee that Williams will play in the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, but by returning this week, there's a good chance that he'll at least be ready for the start of the regular season.

Dropping Out of Practice

Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey, toe

Commentary: After missing the majority of training camp the first few weeks, it was disappointing to see Dorsey have a setback. He had one reception during the Seattle Seahawks last week and appeared to be heading in the right direction. There's still no indication on the severity of his injury, however. Because he didn't drop out of Sunday's practice, perhaps it's minor.

Linebacker Dezman Moses, toe

Commentary: Moses has underwhelmed during training camp this year, so it was similarly disappointing to see him drop out on Monday. It would appear Moses is on the roster player, and he really could use good use a good performance during the final preseason game. He hasn't been ruled out yet, however.

Still Out

The following players' status hasn't changed (anticipated return in parentheses):

  • Offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga, knee (likely out for entire season)
  • Safety Morgan Burnett, hamstring (undetermined)
  • Cornerback Casey Hayward, hamstring (undetermined)
  • Linebacker Brad Jones, hamstring (potentially day to day)
  • Running back DuJuan Harris, knee (undetermined)
  • Cornerback Jarrett Bush, knee (undetermined)
  • Offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, leg (undetermined, on his "last hurdle," according to McCarthy)
  • Safety Sean Richardson, neck (undetermined)
  • Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, knee (likely to begin season on the PUP)
  • Offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, ankle (regular season at the earliest)
  • Cornerback James Nixon, knee, ankle (undetermined)
  • Linebacker Jarvis Reed, ankle (undetermined)

See ya Dorsey. Can't make the club in the tub.

Bill's picture

Ow. He's either fragile, unlucky, or both.

If he wasn't one of three seventh round picks, it'd probably be a bigger deal. Hopefully he can stay in shape and try out for the Packers next year.

hayward4president's picture

I think White is legit though. He's a poor man's Cobb. Pretty shifty..

VApackerfan's picture

I agree. The little I have seen of him, I have been impressed. Great hands, and very quick. He seems like that Amendola/Welker breed, which seem to be increasingly popular/wanted by NFL teams.

Stroh's picture

We already have a Welker clone in Cobb. Maybe even Ross if he makes it. Don't really need another IMO.

hayward4president's picture

Yeah wouldn't wanna have a lot of good speedy wrs....that'd suck.

Stroh's picture

How many slot WR do you wanna carry? Ones enough... Twos more than enough. I haven't seen White do anything outstanding. We know the top 4 WR, I would go w/ a bigger, faster higher upside guy as the developmental WR. Not saying White isn't decent, but really I don't see any upside, just more of the same. If your gonna keep one of those little guys I would say Walker has done more and I don't want him either. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

Evan's picture

I think Johnson is going to make a very strong push for that #6 spot these next two weeks (I say that assuming Boykin and Ross are in).

RC Packer Fan's picture

Boykin is definitely a lock. I wouldn't say that about Ross though. I think he still needs to prove himself.

Idiot Fan's picture

I feel like every year we talk ourselves into 6 WRs worth keeping, but they never end up keeping more than 5. With other positions possibly needing to keep extra (DL, ILB), I would be shocked if they keep 6 WRs. Especially considering that Johnson has put so little tape out there, they probably feel like they can stash him on the PS. Just a guess.

FITZCORE 1252'S EVO's picture

I know what you're saying, we did keep 6 last year, though.

Stroh's picture

And it turned out to be a mistake didn't it? If they go w/ only 4 RB, they might keep 6 WR or 5 TE's. That's a distinct possibility IMO.

FITZCORE 1252'S EVO's picture

Says who? IIRC, our #6 saw the field last year... Out of necessity.

Stroh's picture

Really Driver played last year? He had 8 rec and got passed by Boykin last year. No way Driver should have been on the roster last year.

FITZCORE 1252'S EVO's picture

Did our #6 WR see the field?

Stroh's picture

Our #6 WR shouldn't have been there, and his 8 rec should have gone to the #5 guy. Driver got his VERY few rec early and Boykin got most of his later. Wasted roster spot to keep both. When injuries hit just call a PS guy up if you needed another body.

Evan's picture

Last year's situation is different than this year's though. They wouldn't be keeping an old, past-his-prime WR at the 6 spot out of ceremony, they'd be keeping a young, full-of-potential WR at the 6 spot in order to develop him and protect him from other teams.

Not saying it's going to happen, but it's not the same.

Stroh's picture

That's if you think White is full of potential. I don't... I don't think either Walker or White has much upside. Guys like them are available every year. Dime a dozen guys. Let me know when you can find another 6'2 215 lb WR that runs under 4.4 in the 7th rd. Hate that Johnson has missed most of the offseason so far, but the developmental spot still would go to him over White or Walker. And Dorsey should go on the PS.

Evan's picture

Yeah, I'm talking about Johnson.

Stroh's picture

Sorry, lost track and got confused w/ the thread just above this one. If Ross makes it as a returner/receiver, I can see keeping Johnson as a possible 6th WR. I wanna see if he can develop. He could be special if he works hard and makes the most of his athletic talent.

Evan's picture

Yeah, I could easily see a 6th WR at expense of a TE.

Evan's picture

Last year they kept 15 RB/WR/TE (5 RB, 6 WR, 4TE).

I could see the exact same breakdown this year.

Lacy, Harris, Franklin, Green, Kuhn
Cobb, Nelson, Jones, Boykin, Ross, Johnson
Finley, Mulligan, Bostick, Quarless/Taylor

Wiscokid's picture

I can see them keeping Walker at WR. Since they have Mulligan to pick up the blocking duties for Kuhn. Kuhn could be gone.

Evan's picture

Here's hoping...but I sincerely doubt it.

Bearmeat's picture

We need Heyward and Burnett to improve soon. Oh, and Bulaga and Sherrod... sonofa...

Drealyn Williams's picture

The measurables our two drafted WRs put up had me intrigued and anxious for the pre-season. I sure didn't think they both would receive little-to-no PT due to injury throughout the entire training camp AND pre-season games.

markinmadison's picture

Johnson has crazy 1st round caliber measureables. Would love to see him pull it together.

Evan's picture

I wonder if fear of losing him to another team would be enough for the Packers to keep him as a 6th WR.

RC Packer Fan's picture

I wondered that as well... Thompson has kept players for that very reason in the past.

Also I remember Mel Kiper saying that he thought Johnson could have went in the 2nd-3rd round.

Idiot Fan's picture

Just curious, why didn't he?

Stroh's picture

They might keep 6 WR if they go lite at another position, such as RB. This years roster is getting difficult for the last 5 roster spots. ST ability is gonna play a big role for those spots IMO.

Jake (State Farm)'s picture

Neither did Mac

The TKstinator's picture

What are you wearing, "Jake from State Farm?"

FITZCORE 1252'S EVO's picture

Khakis... I'll bet.

The TKstinator's picture

She sounds hideous.

Bob's picture

Pray that the darn injury but moves to S. F. And Minnrsota tot row!

Al Fresco's picture

Only good news if the guy can play. Will be interesting to see just how much that nerve in the neck allows the mobility he needs to follow the receiver.

Jake (State Farm)'s picture

I have no hope for Sherrod. I just don't see him helping much if he does come back. Dont know if they can like cut him if he is on the injury list
