Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?

New additions to the injury report on Wednesday include defensive lineman Johnny Jolly, along with outside linebackers Dezman Moses and Nate Palmer.

The injuries continued to crop up at Green Bay Packers training camp on Wednesday, but head coach Mike McCarthy didn't appear worried.

"This is training camp, this is training camp football," McCarthy cautioned. "This is normal."

Here's an update on the walking wounded...

Dropping Out of Practice

Defensive lineman Johnny Jolly

Commentary: Even though he had been brought along slowly, everything had been going swimmingly prior to Wednesday for Jolly, coming off a three-year suspension. No journalist had reported seeing Jolly sidelined at practice, which might be the silver lining in hoping that he's avoided serious injury.

Linebacker Dezman Moses

Commentary: "Dezman Moses missed practice today because of a toe injury," said McCarthy after practice. There's no word on the severity of his injury, but whatever caused it, Moses must have fought through the pain on Tuesday. He never appeared to drop out of practice at any point.

Linebacker Nate Palmer

Commentary: With both Palmer and Moses missing practice on Tuesday, the depth at outside linebacker has taken a hit. The Packers are should consider themselves lucky that neither of the injured players are named Matthews or Perry, but even so, the second-string at the position now consists entirely of undrafted players. Good thing for the Packers, Andy Mulumba and Donte Savage have been up to the challenge.

Safety David Fulton

Commentary: Fulton first dropped out of practice on Tuesday, but it took until Wednesday for McCarthy to confirm that it was a knee injury. He joins fellow safety Sean Richardson among players sidelined at their position.

Returning to Practice

Cornerback James Nixon

Commentary: The Packers got a boost from the return of Nixon. With injuries keeping fellow cornerbacks Casey Hayward and Tramon Williams sidelined early in training camp, the depth at the cornerback position has been tested. Fortunately for the Packers, the young corners have responded.

Offensive lineman Kevin Hughes

Commentary: McCarthy indicated that Hughes missed Tuesday's practice due to headaches. It must not have been too serious considering the stringent concussion guidelines that indicate when player can return to action.

Still Out

The following players' status hasn't changed (anticipated return in parentheses):

  • Cornerback Casey Hayward, hamstring (a couple weeks, as of last Friday)
  • Cornerback Tramon Williams, knee (a couple weeks, as of Tuesday)
  • Defensive lineman Mike Neal, abdomen (a couple weeks, as of last Friday)
  • Running back DuJuan Harris, knee (two or three weeks, as of Tuesday)
  • Offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, leg (undetermined, on his "last hurdle," according to McCarthy)
  • Wide receiver Charles Johnson, knee (presumably day to day)
  • Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey (undetermined)
  • Safety Sean Richardson, neck (undetermined)
  • Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, knee (undetermined)
  • Offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, ankle (regular season at the earliest)
  • Wide receiver Sederrik Cunningham, wrist (indefinite)

Some of these guys are going to be off the fence and out the door if they can't get on the practice field sometime soon .... Some will miraculously "heal" as the first preseason game gets closer.

I mean there is a possibility they could be injured, and thus can't go, right? Should they then just limp around the practice field??
