Don Banks over at SI.com hits on something that’s been gnawing at me since this whole Favre ordeal began.
Banks writes:
…the warm fuzziness of his final glorious season in Green Bay, and his unique relationship with that town, that team and its special fan base has been altered. Perhaps only slightly, but perhaps significantly more than that. Time will ultimately tell, but my gut tells me nobody’s going to come out of this one looking like a winner. Not Favre. Not the Packers. And not all those Cheeseheads who desperately wanted to believe Favre and Green Bay were one of those rare NFL marriages built to last.
How many times over the years have you defended Favre against charges of Diva-like behavior? How many times have you made excuses for his retirement musings? How many times have the guys in your fantasy league who aren’t Packer fans given you hell about Favre being an attention seeking prima donna? And you defended him every time, right? Not Brett. You guys don’t understand. You guys don’t know him like we do, the fans, HIS fans.
Well, now it would seem that we were the ones who didn’t understand and I feel like a complete fool for having been snowed by this hick from Mississippi. Oh, it wasn’t always like this. Not when Holmgren was here. THAT is the Brett I’ll remember fondly. The one that threw 5 touchdowns against the Bears with a bum ankle. The one that ran for a touchdown against the Falcons to get us into the playoffs after decades of futility (even though Holmgren’s last words were: Whatever you do - don’t run) The one that audibled into the perfect play on the second snap from scrimmage in the Super Bowl, and then ran off the field with his helmet held high. That’s the Brett I’ll remember.
But Brett after Holmgren? Once Sherman started putting him above the team? That was the beginning of the person I saw being interviewed on FOX News this week. And I can’t say I’m too fond of him.
