Hundley Continues Ascent In Packers Offense

Green Bay Packers mini camp started this week and all veterans with five or more years in the league were excused.  With an extra week of training camp to prepare for the additional preseason game (the Hall of Fame game), head coach Mike McCarthy is already thinking about keeping his veterans rested and fresh for the regular season.  With that, the younger players are getting more practice time and opportunities to showcase themselves for the coaching staff.

Obviously this year's rookies should benefit the most as they have the most to learn and achieve to carve out their role on this year's team.  But there is also a benefit to some of those players who have been with the team a year or two.  Quarterback Brett Hundley is a prime example.  With Aaron Rodgers off the field all week, Hundley will be leading what is left of the first-team offense.  Those practice snaps are extremely valuable, as Hundley doesn't see many of those when #12 is in the building.

From the media accounts of organized team activities and mini camp practices so far, it sounds like Hundley is continuing to take more steps forward in running the Packers offense and his comfort with McCarthy's system.  A year ago, as a rookie, Hundley was struggling in the early part of the offseason.  So much so that it looked like he would be fortunate just to land a roster spot.  Then, something clicked.  Hundley was seen running the offense in preseason games as if he had been in the system a few years.  Granted, the level of competition was nothing close to what it is with starters on the field for 60 minutes, but at least to the eye, he looked like he belonged.  He also led the entire NFL in preseason touchdown passes, which, for a rookie who looked lost just a few months prior, is nothing to scoff at.

Credit the UCLA alum for his knack for studying and spending time soaking up what Rodgers and the coaching staff have to offer.  He had McCarthy excited as far back as this year's Combine in terms of what he expected to see from Hundley.  The athleticism, poise in the pocket, improved accuracy and a beautiful deep ball are all part of the package and it is the reason Green Bay decided to move on from former backup Scott Tolzien after last year.

Rodgers and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt have surely played a role in Hundley's improvement and credit also has to go to McCarthy.  Since coming to Green Bay in 2006, he squeezed one more good year out of Brett Favre, led Rodgers through the transition to being a starter and becoming one of the best in the game, and now getting Hundley's career on track.  So on track, in fact, that the early buzz has many wishing the Packers could bottle Hundley up for a few more years and unleash him when it's finally time to look for a successor to Rodgers.  While that's fun to think about, we do have to remember that they're playing in shorts and against each other in a controlled environment.  In a game situation, Hundley likely would be challenged to find some of the regular successes that he does in practice each day.

Or maybe he wouldn't.  At this point, Rodgers, if healthy, should give the Packers another five or six years of solid play.  That's too many seasons of riding the bench for the talent that Hundley is displaying now and teams are going to come knocking.  While it would be tough to see a young talent leave and flourish somewhere else, it would likely net the Packers more than they gave up for Hundley, which was a fifth round pick.  That's the NFL player equivalent of flipping a house.  With an extra preseason game and the likelihood that Rodgers won't play much before the games count, Hundley figures to see quite a bit of time under the lights.  And other NFL teams will be watching.

It only takes one team who eventually needs a player like Hundley, whether it be a great fit for their team or due to injury and the Packers are sitting in the driver's seat to make a deal.  It's another credit to McCarthy and the Packers, who have forged one of the top reputations for finding and developing some of the better quarterbacks in the league.  The arrow is pointing up for Hundley and he looks to continue his climb into and throughout the 2016 season.

Hundley did things last season as a rookie we hadn't seen from a back-up QB since the Matt Hasselbeck days or for that matter, never saw from Tolzien, Flynn, or any other QB in the preseason under MM if I remember correctly. I'm sure someone will prove my memory is wrong (I AM getting old) but Hundley gave us something to at least be excited about at the #2 spot for the future. I never understood the the love Tolzien received other than he was a Badger, GO Badgers!

Hundley came from one of those "Spread Offenses" where the plays are called, he basically has one or two reads, and lets the ball fly. He came in and RAN the Packers offense, better than Tolzien IMO and better than any other back-up in a long time. Hell, I'd rather have Hundley over Bridgewater, at least he's shown he can complete a pass over 5 yards from the LOS.

Aaron Brooks, Matt Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell. Solid backup insurance and then a nice draft pick in trade. (Or in Hundley's case, if no trade, a nice comp pick?) No downside to this way of doing business.

Good call: Aaron Brooks is the player I see when I look back at Hundley's play last preseason. What did Brooks net the Packers in trade from New Orleans? Checking wiki, it says...
"On July 31, 2000, the Packers traded Brooks and tight end Lamont Hall to the Saints for linebacker K. D. Williams and the Saints' third round pick in the 2001 draft"
A second or third in return for Hundley, if they can coach him up and showcase him that well, would be a nice return.

Thanks TK, I knew there were more but I post in California and it's about 3:30 AM when I start typing some mornings. Brunnell or Brooks didn't have the Preseasons Hundley did last year did they? I remember Hasslbeck had the title "Mr. August" for a while in Green Bay and had those insane preseasons like Hundley did last year.

I don't recall specifically either of those guys having a killer August but I DO remember that by the time they were dealt they were highly regarded. Holmgren once said (I think it was after he'd left GB) that he was VERY SERIOUSLY considering replacing Favre with Brunell at one point after Brett was slow to give up his "gun slinging" ways.

It's nice to have a good backup for Rodgers, but we're never going to get much for Hundley. Teams know we will need to get something for him and unless there's a LOAD of suitors, they'll balk at sending riches to us, because they'll know that we don't want to let him go for nothing and we don't want Hundley in the NFC, not to mention the NFCN. I'd be ecstatic with a 1st round pick for him - but we'll probably have to settle for a 3rd or even a 4th, which really sucks. As the article states, Rodgers will play well until he's 37 at the least. Probably much longer.

If only Hundley could have been drafted in 2020. :) TT/MM will have to repeat their success to find the next franchise QB then.

We're entering a new age in roster management (pardon the hyperbole) with the tradeability of comp picks. I think we're going to see more player deals than we've seen in the past as a result (need an ILB? Got a 4th round comp pick? Go get one!). Who knows what a first round pick will be worth anymore if teams are going to be more willing to package picks to move around in the draft?

GB traded Hasselback for the 72nd pick (a nice 3rd) and switching 1st rd picks, moving from #17 up to #10. As it happens, GB took Jamal Reynolds at #10 and Seattle used our pick on Steve Hutchinson, and we took Torrance Marshall with the 72nd pick. Oh well, still a good opportunity even if we did not capitalize. Reynolds, Ferguson, Jue, Marshall, Bill Ferrario, David Martin - it was not a good draft.

If Hundley continues to improve and looks like a quality starter, why would you trade away the young guy and keep the old guy?

Rodgers is good, and will continue to be good. But I think it's safe to say his best football is probably behind him at age 33, whereas all of Hundley's best football is ahead of him.

If Hundley looks the part in two years, keep him and trade Rodgers.

Rodgers wouldn't be a jerk like Favre was I don't think. But he's a surefire HOF QB. Is Hundley that yet? No way.

Unless you are absolutely SURE Hundley is the way to go, you stay with Rodgers.

He's on a four year deal so I think we can wait a little while to decide.

That said, if there are any positions you can access in shorts QB might be one of them.

If he shows well, maybe they sign him to a pretty fat extension (for a backup) after year three. It might make him far more tradeable if the receiving team knows they're going to control him longer at a number that isn't quite what they'd pay a high-end starter (and won't crush a cap if he busts).

Agreed. His agent would never allow that to happen. If Hundley continues to develop nicely, it will put the pressure on Green Bay to trade him before he becomes a free agent, and in this quarterback-starved league, there are plenty of suitors that would line up to be potential trading partners.

You have to wonder just what a 36 y-o aging QB, even if its ARod, with a big contract would be worth to another team in trade, but I don't see 3-4 first rounders. The Vikes might go for it, though...

He'd be 34. If he were playing at a MVP level, he'd command a lot in return. Jerry Jones/Dan Snyder would be crazy enough.

As a point of comparison, Joe Montana went for a first round pick at age 37 and coming off a major injury.

We agree here. If Hundley is the certifiable real-deal, I don't think you cling to a 36 y-o Aaron Rodgers. The fan base would hate it, but it's not about loyalty: it's about the ongoing health of the franchise.

I agree Quarderer. I am absolutely convinced TT has yet another hall of fame qb on his team in Hundley. Teflon Ted has the opportunity to be the only GM in NFL history that had three hall of fame qb's in a row and the last two were drafted by him. I don't think Ted wants some other team taking credit for his greatness with the trading up to get Hundley.

Ted in time will be known as one of the greatest GM's that God ever created but you don't get that title by getting rid of young franchise qb's like Hundley. I also suspect he'll keep Hundley and let Rodgers go just like he did Favre. Your personality or how nice you are has nothing to do with this. Ted is a strategic thinker kind of like Donald Trump is. He doesn't care how other people view him. He only cares about getting the job done and what is in the best interests long term for the team.

I'd be happy getting a 2nd or 3rd pick for Hundley, if it comes to that. Believe me, when Rodgers finally hangs it up we may be trading for somebody else's backup. If the GM really believes he's the guy (Hello? This is Ron Wolf calling...) giving up a 2nd or 3rd rnd pick is a bargain.

"... head coach Mike McCarthy is already thinking about keeping his veterans rested and fresh for the regular season. "

I guess I really must be old school but with all the talk about the CBA, not enough pad practices etc, resting this early in the year seems very strange. Resting for home stretch, second half of season I understand but this I dont get. Is it me? Given Rodgers and the WRs need to get on same page, I thought if anything the starters would be playing and practicing more than previous years. Except Jordy that is.

It is just you, ha-ha. GB gets an extra week of practice this year due to having the extra pre-season game. MM decided the vets don't need the extra work (looks like anyone with 6 years experience were excused) and would be exposed to injury. It is a balance that needed to be struck. It is akin to playing all the starters for 3 quarters in the pre-season games - they get more padded practice, real tackling experience, etc., but playing the starters extensively is a bad idea during the preseason.

I really liked Hundley coming out of College. I thought for sure he was going to get drafted at the end of the first round or 2nd round at the latest. And when he was still available in the 5th I was so happy with the Packers went up and got him.

He has a bright future ahead of him. If he continues to improve I could see him getting traded in a couple of years similar to Aaron Brooks. Seeing what teams are willing to give up for QB's (see Brock Osweiler), I could see teams being very interested in Hundley if he continues on the path he is on.

Rodgers is 32. Not 37. You don't give up a top 10 QB in history for a project unless you are POSITIVE Hundley will be a HOF QB too. I don't know how you could possibly know that even at the end of next year unless ARod is out for a full season and Hundley shines.

In which case, how much would ARod be worth if he was that injured?

It's a no win situation. Teams will know we want to dump Hundley in the AFC and they will lowball us as a result.

"You don't give up a top 10 QB in history for a project unless you are POSITIVE Hundley will be a HOF QB too."

I think it depends on where ARod is in his career. If he's 36 and showing significant signs of decline, you don't need an HOF player to replace him if he's not playing at an HOF level. The younger guy, who you might get on a cheap second contract because he hasn't played very much, might get you 6-8 years of top 10 (in the league) QB play. That might be what's best for the team moving forward.

Everyone seems to assume that ARod is going to be ARod until he's close to 40. Nobody knows that's true. We're reaching that stage where that #2 QB needs to be a pretty good prospect...just in case.

I am just looking at how long QB's are playing well for. Brady is 40ish, and is still playing great. We don't know how long Rodgers will be good for, but honestly I think he has 5-6 more great years left. I don't see Hundley being around 5-6 more years as a backup.

Agreed on keeping Hundley as long as he continues to show the same kind of ability and poise he has to date. If you really go back, the last time we had a #2 QB you could really feel comfortable with was Zeke Bratkowski. Hasselback, Brunnell, and Brooks all became solid starters after they left but at the point they were behind Favre it is any ones guess how well they would have done immediately. I did not have a lot of faith in Peterson, lucky Favre was the toughest QB ever, the few times he did come in you could see the LB's and DB's move up several yards towards the line of scrimmage, he was scouted well. Based on starters average pay, it is almost impossible to have 2 QB's you can count on unless you have a Luck (had not hit the big contract yet) and Hasselback (willing to play for a lot less money). Agree also on the Sherman trade talk, I believe the only starters he picked were Barnett (#1) and Wells (#7) in all of his drafts, good thing Harlan stepped in and solved that proiblem.

It is good news that Hundley is progressing well. However, until we see him in a regular season game we won't know what we have in Hundley. And unless Hundley gets some actual playing time it will be difficult to get good value in return for him in a trade. If Hundley continues to develop the Packers should actually consider keeping him and prepare him for the inevitable injuries Rodgers will likely endure as he gets older. It's a bit of a tricky situation but I would hate to see the Packers invest so much in developing Hundley for little return. Thanks, Since'61

"However, until we see him in a regular season game we won't know what we have in Hundley."

He's got to play several meaningful games. It's like the new hot-shot rookie pitcher: first time around the league, he might look unhittable. After the second time, he's optioned back to AAA because he's been figured out. It would take at least a couple games for teams to really start to figure him out, making those next couple--where he's forced to adjust--the real telling ones.

I think Hundley's development will be very intriguing, solely for the fact that any semblance of a starting caliber QB is coveted in the NFL - that alone should get the Packers quite a haul if he continues to ascend and the Packers put him on the trading block.

I would love for him to stick around to succeed Rodgers but that won't happen.

Who has injuries that don't hamper their play? We don't know the reason why his play dipped last season. The entire Offense had a down season. The only games he's missed in 3 seasons was due to a broken clavicle.

As for the Seahawks game, people are overlooking the immediate surrender INT by Burnett, HHCD's non-attempt to knock down Russell's pylon to pylon prayer toss up, the on-side kick, fake field-goal blown assignment, missed tackles late in the 4th.

You're talking about Rodgers as if he's had Michael Vick, who has played a full season ONCE, type injuries.

"Who has injuries that don't hamper their play?"

Beyond those games you mention, he missed a game for a concussion in 2011, I think, and missed one in 2010, but I don't remember what for (might have also been a concussion).

In all, he's been very durable. If we want to talk about hampering play, I don't think Seattle, Dallas or Detroit feel that ARod's play was all that hampered by his calf. On one leg, he was still better than all but a few QBs in the league. Even last year, with the knee that needed work immediately after the season, he claimed it wasn't hurting him or impacting his play (although I think we're all counting on the fact that it was). Go back to the Chicago game after the collarbone: even after half a season on the bench he goes 25/39, 318, 2/2. Whatever the case, despite recent injuries he's still played better than most QBs in the league.

Taryn, what do you mean "with you of all people"? You don't know me. I never spoke with you before but I am well aware of your history of using poetry in football. Taryn, everyone knows there's no crying in baseball and there's no poetry in football. I read here for years and your posts were always the most confusing to me. I often wondered why you wrote the way you did but never asked. I think you misunderstood me. I am on your side Taryn. I am trying to help you assimilate not "ass-imitate/late" whatever that means. I look forward to working with you Taryn as we strive to make you a better more polished poster here. Together we can move mountains.

Ted

I agree with excusing the veterans for a week. The only drawback is that AR is not getting less time with Janis, Abby, Davis, and Adams to develop timing and trust. Cook and Monty aren't practicing, or I'd have included them.

That's what I was thinking. Especially with Janis.

Since Rodgers was spared 3yrs of abuse as Favre's understudy, it should be helpful in extending his career. He's also made recent adjustments to his diet and conditioning with all that in mind.
