Harris To Start Season On PUP

Mike McCarthy told the USA Today that Al Harris will start the season on the Physically Unable To Perform List.

That's the word from Jim Corbett of the USA Today:

McCarthy acknowledged after practice Tuesday that he will place Al Harrison the team's physically unable to perform list, meaning Harris will miss at least the season's first six games as he continues to recover from season-ending knee surgery. The 35-year-old Harris injured his knee in a Week 11 meeting against the San Francisco 49ers.

"Al Harris is definitely getting better, he's getting close,'' McCarthy told USA TODAY. "But he's going to have to start the season on the PUP (physically unable to perform list).''

The move means that Harris will be unable to play in a game for the Packers until after Week 6 of the regular season.

kinda sucks, i thought for sure he'd make it back. hoping at least.

luckily he will be back in week 7 for the first match up against the Vikings.

Barring anymore injuries in the secondary, I think the Lee/Underwood/Shields trio can hold the fort down at nickel. At least through the first 6 games which is arguably the easiest stretch of our schedule.

I don't think the nickel issue is as big as the No. 2 CB spot. Right now I'm worried as to how Tramon Williams will be able to handle that role.

Me too. I hope he's still learning day to day. Seems like he was more on things last year (after Harris went out), but it also seems he did it last yr with resort to "aggressively oriented penaltys" if you will. To be honest, I'd rather have that, as much as it hurts when it happens.

Well I guess it was coming. Real shame as I thought he was closer to being fit to play. Real issue after Wood and TRAYmon at CB. Guess we'll find out soon if Shields is a promising talent or just better than the struggling Underwood and Lee.

I think this is the best for Harris. He's a driven person and would force himself on the field ready or not. Of course it gives MM some roster options to start the year.

It doesn'tguarentee Shields a spot on the roster but it sure makes that possibilty a topic in the coming days. If I were Shields I'd attach myself to Harris and get his opinion on everything I could. Harris can't practice so why not get the benefit of his knowledge.

And best, Harris will be coming back during a stretch where he will be needed most.

That brings him back in time for Minny, if he's back at all.

While I'm disappointed that he won't be back sooner, I think that there is no question that this is the smart move medically. No matter how fast he progressed in rehab, 9 months is not long enough for an injury like the one he sustained to heal. With the extra time, I hope that he is able to hit the ground running in week 7. By that time, the Packers might need him badly.

As a huge fan of Harris', this is diappointing news. BUT having him in even better shape in seven weeks from now will be the best thing for the team's run for a championship. I have nothing but great admiration for him and the manner in which he dedicated himself to his rehab. He's truly a rare individual and has great work ethic.

On the bright side, he may be fresher for a possible playoff run. After sixteen games the nicks and bruises add up. That's why rookies often fade town the stretch...they just aren't used to the wear and tear. Hope he can come in and add a spark when we may really need one. Same with Bigby.

Sucks, but is anybody surprised? Maybe he'll come in just in time to put us over the top? Maybe we'll be fine without him? Tramon, Sam, Brandon... make a name for yourselves.

Deep down in a dark place I don't like to think about, I was hoping he wouldn't play right away. I was afraid he'd come back too soon and re-injure himself. We need him too much to throw away another season by coming back too soon. Plus Underwood, Lee, and Shields will get some really good reps against the easier teams in our schedule. It will help them develop.

IMO anything Al Harris can contribute to this season is a bonus, I can see the Pack easing him back in week 10 or 11, maybe.

Did people really think a 35 year old corner back would be ready for the start of the season coming off in the words of his doctor, "Worst knee injury he has seen"?

I said last year, I hope Al Harris can exit gracefully if age and the injury prevent him from playing. This still could end badly if Harris fights the inevitable.
