Gut Reactions: Wild Card Weekend

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers' loss to the San Francisco 49ers

 • For all the crap Capers gets, the offense cost the Packers this game.
 • That play where it looked like Rodgers was sacked and then he escaped to find Cobb? Yeah, I'm pretty sure my heart stopped.
 • Yes, losing Shields on the first drive hurt bad.
 • James Jones' drops really hurt.
 • There was one 3rd down where Rodgers used a double cadence, and Bowman showed he was coming on the blitz. Rather than call off the blitz, Bowman nodded his head as if to say "That's right, I'm coming" - that was awesome.
 • Yes, Clay Matthews would have made a difference.
 • The complete lack of production from the offense in the 1st quarter was absolutely brutal.
 • On the touchdown to Davis, Morgan Burnett has to know where the mismatch is. He is just completely useless on passing downs. His contract extension could become an albatross for the Packers.
 • Jarrett Bush going inside on the 3rd down blitz where he was picked up by Gore was a killer.
 • Hyde could have started a nice little legacy if he had caught that interception.
 • Tramon Williams is the man.
 • Davon House was burned and made some plays. I know fans love to hate on him, but he's got talent. Look for him to be much improved next year.
 • Ryan Pickett played one hell of a game.
 • Mike Daniels is a bad man.
 • Marshall Newhouse wasn't a disaster when he came in for the injured rookie.
 • I still love this team.
 • Go Pack Go.

Putrid offense in the 1st quarter cost us the game. That and Jones usually makes those catches.

Defense was balling for the most part, no complaints.

I wish I could say the same about Mike and his guys.

I'm not sure how much was Capers' unit responding to being called out and how much was Mother Nature putting a restrictor plate on both offenses.

The latter part explains both the subpar performance of the offense along with the better than expected performance of the defense.

The telltale domination by Kaepernick on the ground along with the defense surrendering a 4th quarter lead and another tie tells me it was the same old defense that got a big helping hand from some nasty weather.

Hey, you blame MM for that. The last five games his offense and its been an uninspiring offensice scheme, two runs and a pass two runs and a pass. Frisco looked at the tapes, they expected the typical game calling that MM does and got it. Of course they would look dominate knowing what the calls are going to be.
I felt all along, he should be head coach and get and O coordinator who knows what the hell he is doing. Other coaches call time outs when they see the clock ticking down. MM let it go down and it costs us position and a filed goal for dely of game.

Character and grit is when you play well 100% of the time.

If you go up against a great opponent, play well and lose, that's character and grit.

When you go out there and shit yourself for 1 or more quarters, then try to rally back out of the hole you've made for yourself, that's failure.

When you go out and shit yourself into a hole week after week, year after year, that's not character. That's failure. Even when you pull yourself out of it more often than not.

A great coach once said, "You do things right ALL the time. You don't do the right things SOME of the time."

Safety has been a problem for years. Their best guy is average. Their other 3 guys are no good. I would love to see someone come in to get that positional group out of the category of "horrible liability"

On the front 7, I'd say the LBs are a FAR bigger liability than the DL. IMO, they have plenty of talent along the DL and not nearly enough at LB. They should really switch to a 4-3 this offseason.

No way... Keep the 34 and find one really good ILB. Look at the D when it had a healthy Bishop. Find one very good ILB and the D will be vastly improved. Maybe Lattimore could be that guy, but in the draft if they get CJ Mosley that solves ALOT of problems. Then get a safety in the 2nd or 3rd or hope Richardson develops into a reliable to very good Safety!

Hank Scorpio's picture

January 05, 2014 at 10:09 pm

Finding a star ILB would probably solve their 3-4 issues, for the most part. But finding a star ILB has proved quite elusive for the Packers so far.

This team, as is, has enough talent to win using a 4-3 without finding a star anything. With Neal and Perry moved to their natural position with their hand in the dirt, they go 9 deep up front. Williams, Shields, House, Hyde, Burnett and Hayward make one heck of a dime unit. Another Safety would be nice but that goes for either system. Matthews can make plays and pile up tackles from the LB level. That can be a really good defense.

Sure some of those guys might be gone this offseason. But that hurts them no matter the defense they run.

Who didn't know San Fran was going to run out the clock and kick to win. We needed a TD inside the 10 - McCarthey screwed the pooch by removing lacy/starks - We should have run Starks up the middle instead of call that stupid time out - starks gets 5 -8 and puts a TD imminent. I hate it when McCarthey thinks he's smart - terrible series to lose the game - needed Hyde to make that INT - DAMN!! Ball went right through House's hands - DAMN!! I guess we pick 22? - won't watch another game until the Packer Scrimmage - hate football - love the PACK!! - Need someone who can run down that F-ing Kapernick - DAMN!!! Too many injuries to win next round anyway - wish we would have lost to Cowboys Bears now so we could have gotten decent draft pick - we only have a few more years with Rodgers - WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING WITH THEM!!! DAMN!!!

I would have thrown 3 times from 1st and goal at the 9. That's just a REALLY difficult conversion, especially against a team like SF. I knew they would only get a FG there.

I'd like to say "next year when we're healthy it'll all be better" but I'll never make a statement like that again. Can never count on health.

Let some UFAs go. James Jones today was very disappointing. As young as this team is every year, need some young (and hungry) talent to come in and take some jobs. Need to do better in draft, I'm tired of counting on UDFAs in multiple key spots.

My only real criticism started out from joy. Last drive, first and goal on the ten... Packers go four wide with Starks...and SF has only five FIVE in the box! Finally. First time all year, I think to myself...Starks may just walk in!..... But wait...time out Green Bay....

Agree 100% - I was thinking the same thing. Also , in a close game, I feel it's almost better to burn a play than give up a 2nd half Time out. We could have had a full minute with the ball to tie with a FG if we had the extra TO. The D would have stepped up and stopped Gore knowing we would have a chance - instead they were an inch softer and gave up the 1st down.

I HATE TIME OUTS IN THE SECOND HALF OF A CLOSE GAME!!!! They are way too valuable - when will coaches realize this? Man, they should pay me to be a spotter in their ear. Can you believe Tomlin scored a TD to give the Pack a chance instead of run clock and kick? (Pitt game) How do they pay these people?

Soon as they had 1st and goal at the 9 yd line I knew they were going to kick a FG. Its REALLY hard to score from the 9 yd line on 1st down, especially against a team like SF. Best shot to get a TD IMO was to pass 3 times. No way they were gonna run for a TD from the 9. That's a very difficult conversion.

Well, it was a fitting end to the season - with our top two defensive playmakers on the sideline, we needed a defensive stop and couldn't get it, and along the way there was a dropped INT, loss of contain on a critical third down, and rushing for a backbreaking first down.

But, the D at least kept us in it. I think the biggest problem was the offense's inability to rush against six-man fronts for the first two-thirds of the game.

They are very good. But if we can't rush against six-man fronts, then Rodgers is going to have a long day. I was actually surprised that Rodgers was as effective as he was in the passing game.

Also, we should tip our hats to the refs. I thought they did a decent job and let both teams play.

This was a 7-9-1 team. I felt going into the season this team was 6-10 and missing the playoffs so they did better than I expected, but then I expected Deeeeeetroit to be a freekin dominant team, the Vikes to be competitive (not) and da bears to be below the pack.
In reality if the Vikes had a QB and the Lions a coach, we would have been out weeks ago. So its not what we did its what our competitors did not do. If they play up to expections next season, I think were in big trouble.

honestly this team was better than last years team. Rodgers missing 7 games had everything to do with a worse record and as for losing in the wildcard to san fran. San Fran in 2013-14 > Vikings 2012-13.

good season all things considered.

Being so conservative offensively early in the game kills this team, and that's on the coaches.

you have the best QB in the game. use him. don't play scared. its cowardly and give the other team the upper hand

win or lose with your best. that's why GB is out of the playoffs. they have a below average coaching staff with a legendary qb. pass to set up the run, not the other way around. so, so stupid every game against the 9ers

this also applies to 1st and goal at the 9 in the 4th quarter. win or lose with your best. let 12 dictate the outcome

I don't like Capers, but i thought the D was solid today.

this was on MM. terrible early play calling

A couple thoughts:

- offense started bad, but biggest problem was play calling on 1st and goal series. No Lacy or Starks in any of the 3 plays?

- for better or worse, today's performance all but insures Capers is back.

- I'm really sad right now, but I love the Packers and this team in particular.

- As always, Go Pack Go

- five is still a couple?

They actually showed up. The offense could take a lesson from them.

Where was his D the rest of the season? Why did it take until now for them to play w/ heart and determination? If Capers D had shown up when Rodgers went down they probably go 4-4 or better. They have to play like that game EVERY week! SF D certainly does.

This team gave extraordinary effort today. I am very proud of them. I am very proud of this 2013 team in general. but particularly so today. We can complain about this specific coaching decision or that specific individual player's play all offseason.

All I can think right now is how a team that was clearly outclassed in talent level today thanks in large part to injuries hung in there and fought like crazy to make this an even game. That's what happened today.

So the only chance this defense has of improving is if they draft some rookie difference makers.

Good luck with this.

I know Datone played but did he or Worthy do a thing to justify their 1 and 2 picks? Perry fell flat on his face, no one near him, he just flat out fell down trying to get within 5 yards of Kaperdink. He looks totally out of shape and is slow.

Stroh,

I just read that article in J/S online. I want Capers gone even more now. I don't think you can waste years on a guy's career by making them apprentice in the defense for a year or more. Especially not years when they might be both productive and cheap. By requiring a more veteran unit, he is putting undue pressure on the cap. That's not a long-term winning formula. You'll have periodic cap purge/rebuilds. Like we've seen from the Steelers.

Really, that speaks to the underlying adaptability of the coaches to use their talent effectively. Or in this case, the lack thereof. That's where Capers lost me this year. They had a good group of corners and good depth along the line. That ought to translate to better than 25th ranked defense.

great article! it sounds like the type of players that capers needs to run this defense(experienced veterans) and the type of players that ted values and signs to the team (young, inexperienced players) are at odds with one another. it's basically saying that ted isn't giving dom the tools to be successful. how will this defense ever improve?

Hyde could have solidified some 2010 Tramon glory with that potential INT. The game should have not come down to that one play, but damn.

The defense actually kept us in the game. A rather big suprise considering the injuries and the previous game examples. The outcome probably should have been way worse.

The 49ers are a legit team with a lot of shit grins on offense(Kap and Crabtree), a baby of a head coach, and a defense with a handful of playmakers. A really solid team.

Get healthy, draft well, and keep 12 upright. Go pack go in 2014-15!

Capers called a great game. The players he had available didn't execute consistently. Morgan Burnett played the technique correctly as it was 2 Man coverage and he needed to apex, which he did. However you can clearly see he has no range. Most NFL safeties could have made that play. He his a below average safety. Ted overpaid.

Mike McCarthy really struggles to attack 2 and 2 Man. He still hasn't figured it out. He is very poor at personnel utilization. I like the use of Cobb in the backfield but not with 1st & Goal from the 8. McCarthy consistently gets outcoached by Greg Roman. Roman utilizes his personnel with heavy sets and standard personnel effectively. McCarthy contributed to this loss in a big way.

I agree that MM has the team's support, he's really good at keeping the ship sailing through adversity. In my opinion play calling is to involved for the average person to criticize. Strategy decisions, that's another matter.

How can you not use the last timeout to preserve 19 seconds in the 1st half? That would have allowed a chance for a TD! Instead the time and the timeout were absolutely wasted.

Hey if your defense sucked as bad as the Packers you would call a shit load of running plays too so the D stays on the sidelines. That is his strategy: two runs and a pass, two runs and a pass. Its MM's mental ball control game.

Since they have the GREAT Rodgers at QB, they run no huddle most of the time to take advantage of his ability to get the Packers into favorable calls each play. So personnel groups aren't utilized since it then allows the D to change players to. They get the D in the defense they can exploit and let Rodgers run the offense. Its also why its pretty ridiculous to say McCarthy is calling poor plays. Most of them are plays that Rodgers is putting them it. He gets an initial play call from the sideline, but it has as many as 3 or 4 tagged plays associated w/ the call. Rodgers is supposed to pick one that will work. He can also completely audible to a different play if the one called doesn't have a chance to work.

Wait wait wait, if MM was the one who had to blow, what, three timeouts to avoid delay of game penalties, people would be screaming about how he can't manage a game, but since it's the genius Harbaugh, it's ignored. You can't say that either coach in a 23-20 game that's decided on a last second field goal got vastly outcoached.

The 49ers put 6 men in the box and dared us to run, and for 2/3rds of the game we couldn't. That's the players.

What do other teams have that we don't have? Shouldn't that point out a GLARING weakness somewhere? I'm not a GM, but every other team has a way to stop him from running except us. The Packers don't have the speed at LB to deal with Kaepernick's running. Had it been warmer, he might have gone for more than 181 today.

They need to get their LB group fixed up this offseason. You cannot play a 3-4 defense and have the LBs be your weakest positional group.

Or better still, scrap the 3-4 and go to a 4-3 this offseason

The 49ers have good LBs so it would be a huge issue for them to be down to their 3rd string.

Outside of Matthews, there is not much to separate the Packers 1st string from their 3rd string. Perry, Neal, Mulumba, Palmer and even Datone Jones played OLB this season. I don't see much difference between any of them. Same with Hawk, Francios, Jones and Lattimore inside.

nagler is right on! i said the same thing on the live blog. THE OFFENSE LOST THE GAME FOR US TODAY! if you would've told me that our defense would've held the 49ers to only 23 points, i would've told you that we would've won. now, there were some costly mistakes on defense (micah hyde not coming up with the INT, jared bush blowing coverage on kaepernick while he ran for a huge 1st down, etc...) but you can't blame capers for that!

now, i'm not saying that capers shouldn't be fired- i have no idea if he should or shouldn't. i'm not in the meeting rooms everyday and i don't know what's going on internally in the packers' organization. but be careful what you wish for because the packers could bring someone in who's worse than him as a defensive coordinator.

i'm not really a play call criticizer and i think MM is a very good coach but some of his play calls killed us today as well as the time out mismanagement at the end of the 1st half. we were running down their throats in the 4th quarter and MM starts getting cute in the redzone instead of running a combination of lacy and starks up their asses. i'm not sure why this happens but it seems to be happening more and more lately.

i'm proud of this team overall. they weathered the storm of injuries this year and played a VERY competitive game in the playoffs but in the end, the injuries buried us this year. let's get healthy, have a great draft, and kick some ass next year.

2014 is our year!

Good points Jack. If they did get rid of Capers and I don't think they will, whomever we get has to work with what we have as players so that person is strapped from day one.
Its easy to stay the course than bring in a guy who is going to want to make a lot of personell changes at that costs money. Hence, I see Dom staying.

I have no problems with the way McCarthy calls plays or manages game situations. It's not always perfect but there are professionals lining up on the other side, too. Today, the conditions were brutal and not much help to either offense.

McCarthy's biggest flaw is his loyalty to assistants. How long do we have to see bad play from Safety, ILB and OLB before Darren Perry, Winston Moss and Kevin Greene get sent packing? How many years of coverage breakdowns before he gets a guy that can coordinate his players properly on defense?

Problem is he is looking at the play card when he should have noticed the clock winding down. That delay of game costs us position, and a possible field goal.
His clock management is horrid because he is trying to do to much, wearing too many hats.

Brilliance in gameday management has never been very high on my list of things a HC needs to do well in order to be successful.

Preparing a team to play before gameday is a far bigger deal. That starts with the offseason program and extends through TC. Then, week to week in preparing for specific opponents. I think McCarthy does that very well, for the most part. So I can overlook the occasional hiccup with a time out here or a bad play call there.

Congratulations to Packers' players for stepping up and playing w/ some toughness not seen for some time.

There were a couple times though that McCarthey opted for delay
when Pack gained momentum. That seemed to go against his 'maintain tempo' mantra.

That's one of my big gripes w/ Capers. Why did the D take till the playoffs to play w/ that sense of urgency? It was and should be an every week occurrence. It is for SF... I doubt Capers is going anywhere but I want to see the D play like that all freakin year! That's how Defense NEEDS to be played!

I don't know that it's a matter of playing with a sense of urgency as much as it is playing with talent. I don't think anyone (save the usual trolls) would argue that Clay doesn't play with a sense of urgency when he's on the field. Is that because Dom reaches him but not the others? Or is it that the other players aren't as talented? If Capers were the DC for the 49ers my guess is that they'd play as well or better than they do now, but that has more to do with Navarro Bowman, Aldon Smith, etc., being on the roster than it does with the fact that the DC motivates them to play harder. But, it's just a guess...

If our defense wasn't so beat up -- SF only scores twice, maybe? If our offense doesn't start so damn slow in the 1st quarter -- is the game an easy win for the Pack? TT found a ball player in Daniel. Nick Perry should be an exclusive pass rusher. I know we're only human, but phawwwwk! Why does the Pack seem to ALWAYS lose more than a few key players to injury? James Jones took a season off? I'm so anxious to see our backfield next season (Lacy/Starks/Franklin). We need someone else calling/CREATING plays. Can someone recall a play that made you go,"hmm, that was creative." or,"I've never seen that 1. Good play." Our O-Line is not as bad as some people say. Rodgers hates throwing the ball away and he has a strong dislike for checkdowns. All this team needs (roster wise) is a Safety, athletic MLB and 3-down DT/NT. I love this team.

Going to be one of the more interesting offseasons in quite some time. A lot of contracts on the table. Hopefully Shields is ok. I'm not in the clean house camp, but I also think it's time to make some moves, including (#1 on my list) a do-whatever-you-gotta-do trade up to get CJ Mosley. This D needs a new mojo and CJ is the guy, I think.

Too many busts in the draft to give picks away by trading. Let the draft come to you without trading away picks. Last time we traded up we got the bust of all busts Jamal Reynolds (a lock at the time). You just never know - Sherman screwed up by trading away picks for busts.

He's a paid professional and he got his hands on the ball. Simply put that's a play he simply MUST make to win the game. He didn't... IMO he basically cost the game. I know a lot of previous plays, blah blah blah... But those didn't matter. He had the winning play in his hands and didn't make it. It those kinda plays that allow SF and other teams to win.

yep, this was a tough loss for sure especially after going through the dramatic rollercoaster of a season that we just had.

you had the backup QB fiasco as the season started. rodgers going down as well as cobb, matthews, and finley (and a shitload of other key players). the signing of matt flynn during the season. the devastating loss in detroit on thanksgiving. flynn bringing the team back in the 2nd half of the cowboys game. rodgers and cobb coming back last week to miraculously beat the bares and send the team into the postseason.

and then the game today where we were ONE play away from beating the team that kicked our asses badly in the playoffs last year.

it's definitely frustrating to come this close to the big dance after what we've been through this year. the other thing that is sickening is that the saints won yesterday which would've put us in carolina next week instead of seattle.

it definitely looked like things were lining up pretty well for us. the story would've been unbelieveable if we would've gotten to the superbowl but it was not to be: this year........ ;)

And how much, exactly, would if cost in site maintenance (donations) to add a Thumbs up/down feature where a stupid post is hidden with enough Thumbs down? You might want to just put that number out there at some point for public consumption...

Every play he had was an obvious Hold or PI, and we were extremely fortunate in the first quarter (and first half) that he didn't get caught.

I was not a fan of the Cobb-in-the-backfield play, and the Niners didn't fall for it.

There are some unskilled players playing skill positions and that has to improve.

Running the ball in from the 9 is hard, even against a bad run defense. SF has a very good run defense.

I guess I would have preferred one of the two backs on the field to give the threat of run but I have no issues with putting the ball in Rodgers' hands there for 3 shots into the end zone.

Round one mlb kinda obvious with our lack of run d. Hopefully a thumper. Round 2 a safety we need someone to see if burnett can actually live up to expectations if he has a partner. Round 3 tight end. Even though quarless is gettibg better we need depth round 4 wide reciever: james jones leaving again depth. 5 th d line. 6 olb 7 qb.... of course i would be happy with stephen tulloch in the first. Our offense is just fine, especially after Bulaga comes back. Maybe draft a TE or an O-lineman, but that is it. Yes, today it had some troubles but is was more on MM's crap play calling than talent. As it has been all year. Love that 3rd and 3 draw to Kuhn on the first drive. Great call. Never saw that coming. That play has a history of success....

Draft as many defenders as you can next season. Safety, D-line and LB are all positions of MAJOR need. We need an interior line-man who can rush the pusher. A LB that can adequately fill gaps and hold contain. And most importantly, a safety we could label as simply, "competent". We are fine at corner, if we resign Shields.

Draft Defense. Fill a gap or two on offense.

I just hope we go BPA regardless. The last time TT drafted for need was Y2012 and that draft was a dud. We just need better players at most positions and if a potential Pro Bowler is there at #21 it won't hurt regardless of position. We have immediate needs at LB, S and OL and the draft just isn't going to fill those needs for Y2014.

For all the whining I've done, I have to say at the end of the day with our team of the walking dead we stayed competitive right up until the last play.

We made them work for it and while we came up short no one quit trying. Yes there are players that just aren't cutting it. Yes there are several weak links. Yes there areas that have to be improved upon. But despite our patchwork quilt team, we kept pace the whole game with their healthy team. There are no moral victories in sports, but I'm proud of what we were able to do despite some really big adversities.

That's why I'm a Packer fan. The loss hurts but green and gold till I'm dead and cold. I bitch because I love! I just want them to win!

i feel the same way. very few people thought we had a chance after rodgers went down, especially after the thanksgiving day game. it's amazing that we even made the playoffs after being snakebitten with all of the injuries this season (big thanks to the lions and bares for sucking!). in the end, either team could've won this game yesterday, but the 49ers made one or 2 more crucial plays than we did.

i feel pretty hopeful overall. we have A LOT of youth on this team meaning that many of those defensive players who were drafted a couple of years ago should start making the jump to the next level.

i think the offense is in really good shape especially with the emergence of eddie lacy. he just adds a whole other dimension to this team. mccarthy and rodgers need to figure out why the offense wasn't more productive in the red zone. that was a little troubling to see!

Sorry Jack, but i couldn't disagree with you more. For the record, I'm a die-hard Packers fan, i'm still extremely pissed and hurting over that game, but from what i saw, we could play that game an extra possession, an extra 60 minutes, an extra day, and it could've been played in London, here in Brazil or wherever, and we still would've lost. Fact is, considering injuries and all, we played the best game we could, while they played a rather average game. They are much better than they showed. I do think the weather was a factor, and they still looked way better than us. Game is won in the trenches. Rodgers was running for his life against 4, sometimes 3 guys rushing. That is just embarrassing. How can he find someone open, just do the maths. 7 or 8 guys covering 3 or 4 (many times we had help from the RB, FB and TE on pass protection). There was no way to beat them. When Lacy got the ball, their LBs were able to adjust fast, even the safeties were all over him (compare their secondary tackling with ours). Kaep is not that good as he looks when he plays against our soft D. Only times when we see him under duress is when we send 7 guys, sometimes 8 rushing. Again, do the maths, kinda easy to find an open man. Their O and D line own ours. I don't see us beating them until we can rush and avoid rush in a decent manner. We don't need to out-muscle them, but we need to be at least close, since we have a better receiving corp, lot better QB and even better RB now.
Don't see a SB next year, unless we keep all the guys healthy. With Hayward, Jolly, Mathews, keeping at least Pickett in (let Radji go) we have a chance, but without a well-rounded FS and MLB, we can't stand a chance against the powerhouses in the NFC.
