Gut Reactions: Wild Card vs Eagles
Aaron's Gut Reactions from the Packers' playoff victory over the Eagles.

- James Starks has arrived
- Chad Clifton and Byran Bulaga quietly had good games
- Dom Capers did a nice job of mixing it up. As frustrating as the final Eagles touchdown drive was, Capers made them earn it and took a boatload of time off the clock.
- That said, I was throwing things at the TV when Dom went with his patented 3 man rush after he got the Eagles into a 1st and 25 situation. Three straight downs of three man rush = an Eagles first down.
- Once again, the Packers' receivers were feast or famine.
- Erik Walden was quietly excellent today.
- Tramon "The Man" Williams.
- How about Tom "Friend Of Show" Crabtree with his first NFL touchdown?
- McCarthy with his customary butchering of the clock there at the end of the first half.
- That said, I love how everyone hates it when he's aggressive, yet there people were on Twitter getting upset because he was running the ball on first and second down with less than 4 minutes to go. Can't have it both ways people - if Rodgers fumbles, throws an incomplete pass or is picked off, you're all howling about how McCarthy should have been running the ball.
- Overall, this is an excellent win, on the road, against a Division Champion. Great job all around by McCarthy and his team.
- Packers play the Falcons next Saturday night in what is sure to be a much tougher test. Look for a much more balanced offensive attack from the Packers this time around with the emergence of James Starks as well as a healthy dose of Michael Turner from the Falcons. This promises to be a very physical game.

There were several occasions where Jennings was 1-on-1 with Patterson. In every other game he audibles to the PA and takes the shot.

I don't mind the 3 man rush. I absolutely HATE the inside blitz. HATE it. Everybody oknows we're gonna do it, and it gets picked up every time, and we end up giving big plays because we can't tackle shit.

Everytime we blitz up the middle it seems like it takes 5 or 6 seconds to get there and the middle underneath route is widefuckinopen. KILLS me. (unless it works)

When it works I'm really happy, but it usually doesn't. It worked so much last year that now every teams prepares extensively for that.
I just don't like the ILB blitzes. They don't hit home.
On the Matthews' sack, it was Matthews blitzing from inside, not Hawk or Bishop.

It wasn't so much the 3 man rush that wasn't getting the job done, falling back into the zone defense with their speed underneath was horrible play calling by Capers. We needed to stay man up on Jackson and Maclin.

Second this.
In the past two games, the three-man rush has netted 3 interceptions (the only ones made) and a sack. And two of those INTs were game-finishers.
I think the coverage could have been a bit different to account for Jackson, but hindsight is 20/20.

Surprised (pleasantly I think) at how many times Capers brought five, six or even seven pass rushers today. Can't remember that hapening very often in the regular season.
Solid performance from the Pack, though I guess the two FGs were the difference. Little in the way of big passing plays, but we got it done with the running game. Bring on the Falcons!

Overall, for the 3 quarters, McCarthy called a classic game. Classic WCO. However.....the 3rd and 1 call with 9 minutes to go was a HORRIBLE use of personnel and playcalling. Why do you take your best runner out? Absolutely horrible in that situation.

A few times on 3rd and one or two we line up with one RB offset. Why not line up in the "I" and at least make em think we're goin up the gut. Run playaction or just run it but make em guess.

Ok. Last week you told me I was dreaming and MM just wouldn't run the WCO.
I didn't see much of the "extreme sets" that MM likes to use: 1920s RB "T" formation or the 5 WR.
Loved that he almost always had someone in the backfield to help Bulaga, pickup blitzers and give that checkdown option.
Very good strategy overall. And way to ride the "hot hand" of Starks!

In politics, they call it "keeping the powder dry." In reality, nah they were fired up! Focused, determined, playing emotionally but not outside their ability - for the most part.
This team has it in the gut, where you can't see the fire, but it burns fiercely.

I must say, I spent the rest of the game feeling quite peeved about that Jones drop. Jennings also dropped an easy first down earlier that had me going. All the pundits seems to say we have the best WR group out but how can you say that with so many easy drops EVERY game? Great Routes, but really, these drops are on some sort of poor position coaching.

McCarthy had a great gameplan and he used Starks BEAUTIFULLY...EXCEPT...it was borderline criminal how he managed the game with 4 minutes left. I wanted them to sink in the dagger. He sent Rodgers out there with multiple fullback sets, meaning there was little opportunity to audible out of it. I'm in the minority in that I genearall like McCarthy's playcalling....not there.

I like that, Tramon " the man" Williams. He definitely got the pro bowl snub, but obviously did not let it phase him. I would say he knew that ball was coming his way, similar to the viking game where he jumped the route on favre. Truly an amazing way to finish the game.

Gratifying victory. Towards the end I was thinking about the '04 playoff game there and thinking the worst was bound to happen. Great play by Tramon, I liked the plan Dom brought in (I think Philly was expecting more blitzes). Steady as she goes for #12. Must take better care of the football.
Can someone inform James Jones that we are in the playoffs? Shit like that will end your season.

The short week hurts but I feel better about going into Atlanta than I did about going into Philly. We already took their best shot and lost a nailbiter. If we take care of the football I don't see us losing. Philly to me had many more variables for the Defense to account for, Atlanta is vanilla in comparison.

Right away when I saw it I thought "Tuck Rule". As a Raider fan I am very aware of the rule and how unfair it is...but in this case I wanted it called as I was cheering for the Pack and against the dog-abuser Vick.

You have to pump the ball forward then don't bring it too your body.This happened in the earlier game.Cassel pumped the ball forward then it was knocked away not yet bringing it back to his body.It was ruled a fumble at first then over-ruled.

How can we complain about the play calling on the Packer's last drive. We took maximum time off the clock and the result was Vick forces a throw in the end zone. A bit gut wrenching but he played the odds. If Rodgers throws an incomplete pass on 2nd down (or doesn't take the sack). Philly has an extra 40 seconds for their last drive.

I have zero issues with the way that last drive was called. It's a given we were running on 1st and 2nd down. It would have been great to get into third and short from the 2 runs but the most important thing there is chewing clock. On 3rd Philly brought heavy pressure, I was kind of surprised #12 couldn't find a quick-hitter, but you have to throw on 3rd and long there. Get the 1st and take a knee. Didn't happen that way but I have no qualms with the playcalling.

Good point. I guess it's all about the risk/reward.
But he did end up passing on third down anyway. So if it's an incompletion, then the Eagles get an extra play anyway because the clock wouldn't have run down to the 2:00 warning.

Seriously, when Starks ripped off a 12 yarder for a first down, everyone was saying how smart that was to chew up the clock...when he does it again, he's a moron for not throwing.

I have been a McCarthy supporter since he got here. I stand alone at work as the only guy who likes him. That said, I was not happy with his running calls and was begging for him to run play-action on first down after Starks ran for that first. I felt like one more first down would all but seal the deal. I also didn't like that the personnel grouping included two fullbacks, meaning it would have limited Rodgers audible possibilities.
Overall, however, I thought McCarthy had an amazing gameplan and called a great game - I wasn't happy with him at the 4:00 mark, though.

MM said after the game, that he only had a handful of plays for Starks, and that, since he was "hot", he was riding him.
The reason MM seemed "unimaginative" it's because he couldn't be more imaginative. Not when Starks was doing such a great job, we were in the lead, and needed to chew off the clock.
Beggining Tuesday, Starks needs to eat, sleep and breath the playbook. He needs to MASTER at least 3 playaction plays, 3 more runs (outside the T-bone formation) and 3 more pass plays.

Even I'm not going to complain about that. Sure it was predictable. The only thing I would have done is maybe a play action on a second down with a half rollout and pass to a tight end or running back. Simple and safe play. But I was calling for it on the play that Starks gets a first down so I'm not going to nitpick. Overall, I was as happy as I've been with MM's playcalling.
Now don't get me started on the pre-half clock management.

Big props to Rodgers for taking that sack he could have easily tried to force something.
This is one of the best games that I have seen out of MM, missed plays by Jennings and Jones and we rout the Eagles. I would still like to see us throw the ball in those 4 min situations, all teams with great QBs do it. I would rather Vick get those extra 30 seconds and score than score with no time on the clock. This is the luxury of watching from home.

Your best playmaker is Aaron Rodgers, and McCarthy took the ball away from him at the end of the game, until it was 3rd and 10 and everyone knew they had to throw. Put the game away?? Nah. Let's give the ball back to Vick with plenty of time. MM went into a shell that whole 4th quarter, I'm sorry. Great play by Tramon to seal the deal, but it NEVER should have gotten to that point. He needs to be better next week.

100% agree with this analysis. The 3rd and 1 with 9 minutes to go and the 4 minute ICE series highlight one of the glaring weaknesses of Mike McCarthy. I believe he called a fantastic game up until those points. I love the use of the backs in the passing game. They were actually incoporated in to the pass concepts and not used as simply checkdowns. Kuhn on a cross, Starks on flares, Jackson on the screen....simply brilliant. Classic WCO. BUT...again, we see McCarthy misuse his personnnel.
At the 9 minute mark on 3rd and 1 he put in Kuhn and takes out Starks. Why? Maybe I haven't coached enough but that is simply out thinking yourself and mismanaging your personnel. You never take out the "hot hand." Kuhn offered no more benefit in that situation than Starks had shown. It would be like taking out Rodgers in the red zone in favor of Flynn. Just doesn't make sense in my opinion. But, with that being said, why not try a play action pass with Kuhn in there? Better yet, why not try a play action pass with the guy who brought was cutting up the dance floor to being with?
I was okay with the 4 minute offense until the second set of plays on that series. The 1st down call was academic. Maybe Starks squirts through and gets about 3 or 4. I would have liked to see a play action pass with Starks in the game on 2nd down but I wasn't opposed to the run. The 3rd down call was absolutely dumb....and I would have felt that way had they picked up the 1st down. From the personnel grouping to the formation, that had disaster written all over it.
With the success of the running game and that situation, I would have like to see either 21 personnel with Pro I or 12 personnel in a 2 x 2 set. The play call would have been (had I been on the headset), a boot pass or a front side fire play action. Either way, play action. Give Rodgers the run/pass option on the edge. If it's not there, baseball slide and get it to the 2 minute...which is what happend anyway, but in this case, Rodgers wouldn't have been subject to arms and legs flying around him in a static pocket. With the pressure McDermott was brining I cringed when I saw what was happening. Fortunately, Rodgers did the smart thing and took the sack saviing field position.
It's these types of things that McCarthy does that boggles the mind.

Absolutely agree with the sentiment regarding Kuhn here, and McCarthy's insistence on subbing him in every time we have short yardage to go.
Have we even seen James Starks run in a 1 or 2 yd to go situation? Has MM even tried it? Because it sure as hell looks like Starks could get it. I can't remember Starks ever putting up a negative run (I'm sure he has, but i cant recall one).
Kuhn's had some nice plays this year, but he is not an elite short yardage back, and there is no reason to act like he is. His acceleration is simply not impressive. Once he gets going, he can barrel. But he has a very hard time getting up a sufficient head of steam on obvious short yardage plays where he is getting contact right away. Would really like to see us get away from this next week.

POC, your first 2 paragraphs pretty much sum up my opinion of Coach McCarthy tonight. To me, it's not really criticizing his playcalling, but criticizing his situational offensive philosophy.
It's clear that he thought a point in the game was reached where the offense was no longer used for scoring points, or even to move the ball down the field. The offense was for burning clock in his mind. At some point, teams with a lead all do this. I think McCarthy tries to figure out how early in the game he can possibly do it.
I understand that he has faith in the defense. So do I. But I also know that the opponent has a greater chance of scoring when their offense is on the field. The value of burning time goes up the closer you come to the end of the game. With 9 minutes left and up 11, I think most coaches would (correctly) be thinking about pushing the ball down the field and going up by 3 TDs. But our guy is coaching like there is 3 minutes left, not 9. Careful, Mike.

Packers were more balanced today than any other game this season I can think of, 32/27 run/pass today.
I also think while ATL is by far a better overall team, I think the PHI presented the toughest match up for our Defense in the NFC- they have weapons, and extremely fast weapons at that- everywhere. I was very impressed that they held the Eagles to under 100 yards rushing (including Vick)., and for the most part kept their WR's and McCoy in check. Yes, Injury played into that.
None the less, even with all the bending the defense did the entire second half, the Packers only allowed 16 points to an offense arguably stacked with more individual playmakers than any other opponent we'll face in the NFC.
Nothing is guaranteed, but I like how that looks. Next week, we'll probably bench Jarius Wynn and bring up Howard Green again. Matty Ice doesn't stress under the pass rush, and We'll need the beef to help squelch Michael Turner.

I was wondering about the "Tuck rule" too. Not sure why it wasn't brought up by anyone. Sure seemed like a "Tuck" to me but oh well.
Great win but like almost every other game this season, there is room for improvement.
Bring on the next set of Birds, wouldn't be be crazy if the Pack beat 3 "Fowl" teams to get to the Superbowl and then have to face the Ravens?

I might be way off on this, but I think the reason why the tuck rule doesn't apply, is this:
After the Brady-Woodson Tuck Rule sample. every analyst and fan in the entire world collectively agreed the Tuck Rule is completely lame. We're talking making funny noises and drooling stupid. So the NFL decided to never bring it up ever again.
It's just like that whole "It's not a reception unless after the catch you make a football move" crock of shizzle that was all the rage about 6 years ago. After further review, the league realized how completely horrid it was, and swept it under the rug.
It's almost like parenting- even if your spouse makes a horrible call, you have to back it up for consistencies' sake in front of the children... Then, after time passes, you pretend it never happened and move on accordingly.

That, sadly, is probably pretty close to the truth. If MM had challenged though, and said to the refs, "this is a tuck rule play," I don't think they could have ignored it.

I'm definitely content with my criticism of McCarthy as I never criticized him for being aggressive. Too often, fan criticism gets lumped into one boat. It's just generalizing and lazy.

What a beautiful game. First, again, though we had errors, we recovered from our errors. That is what seems to be new about the Pack lately and really has me excited. Then, there was Starks! It was ineffably cool to have a running back. I felt that running was finally something other than a way of making the defense believe we weren't going to pass! Ir's a pity the game began to get away from us in the second half, but Tramon Williams snuffed out the Eagles offense at the last minute. What an ending.

Personally, I love when MM is aggressive. What I hate is a 40yard pass on a 3rd & short.
QB going through progression and throwing it downfield, ok no problem. What I hate is when it's clearly the called play, which has happened several times this season - notably in Packer's losses (e.g. New England).
On first or 2nd down, I have no beef with this. But on 3rd & short, it makes me want to throw things at the TV.
And speaking of which, why is it OK for you to criticize Capers' play calling on the D but then not sympathize with others criticizing MM's play calling on the O? Aren't the same comments that you make applicable? You're only criticizing Capers because it didn't work out. If those 3-man rushes had resulted in incompletions (as one of them did) wouldn't you be calling it genius?

Loving this team's mental toughness.
That Jones drop was downright painful. Even when I went to walk my dog at halftime, we couldn't stop talking about it. Then, when the Packers came out in the second half and fumbled, I wondered if they too were starting to tighten up because of it. The Eagles, as we all know, turned that turnover into 7 points. But what happened next was, I feel, the ballgame. With momentum in the Eagles favor, the Packers came out and drove down the field on a punishing drive, with a great mix of run/pass and put up 7 points of their own. Whatever momentum the Eagles had was gone, and while the Eagles had a chance at the end, I really feel we won the game on this drive.
I feel anytime this team plays football for 60 minutes--not 45, not 30--we can (and will) beat anyone.
On to Atlanta. Go Pack go.

Two missed FG's by Lowry..c'mon, wtf is up with that? A cheap shot by Hawk that rolled Vick's ankle. Rodgers really didn't do sh*t in the 2nd half. The eagles kept shooting themselves in the foot, and Andy Reid coached a terrible game.
No way does the Pack get past Atlanta next week!
