Biggest bright spot was TJ at LT. He looked very good for the most part.
_____
5 sacks – 25 for the year. Can’t keep this trend up
_____
Got to score TD’s in the Red zone. Should have had 5 not 2.
_____
Still more work to do and fortunately the Browns are next

Ron La Canne said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

somebody gots to go and they got to go right now we cant keep on playing like this im glad that we got the win but they still did not look good to me

dd said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Agreed on all points you made Aaron especially on James Campen. He has to go!

JerseyPackFan said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

It doesn’t make sense to fire the majority of the staff but keep the head coach. I think that if Campen goes, you’ll see McCarthy go too.

Andrew said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

The way the Lions played, for the linemen to get lit up the way they did was an embarrassment. Too many D-linemen coming through just completely unblocked. Disgraceful.

Also, this just in, God wants Brett Favre to win another Super Bowl.

Shootz said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Agreed on Campen. It looked like the Oline didn’t know who they were supposed to block for the entire first half. Most of the penalties were also on the Oline.
Hope Jordi’s ok.
Defense looks awesome. Mathews rules.
Was Kampman putting his hand on the ground in a 2-5? Heh.
This team self destructs every week, and I put 90% of that on the offensive line.
Nice to see Bjack get some carries. It reminded me that he fumbles too much.
Seemed like everytime they got into the red zone, the Loins would blitz, sack Rodgers and force us to kick. Then the Packers did a quick screen to DD for nothing and kicked a FG. Then on the next series, Rodgers got killed and lost the ball. That’s all on the OL.
Props to Bigby and Harris for INTs.
I hope TJ can play that well against starters.

nerdmann said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Every running back we have should be cut after the season.

Andrew said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Agreed on if Campen goes, McCarthy has to go. Penalties are killing this team, year in and year out.

bigfog said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Props to DD, btw. All time receptions leader.

nerdmann said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

If MM can get this line to play, we’ll be undeafeated the rest of the way. Campen is not tied to MM.

nerdmann said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Positives? Let’s see…
Packers won. Driver’s record..
Guess that’s about it
http://PackerHaiku.com

PackerHaiku said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

No complaints about the Defense. They played phenomenally. Remember, the Steelers played the same exact team last week and struggled.
.
I can “understand” the penalties but those missed assignments on the Oline are inexcuable. I keep thinking eventually they’ll shore this up but it hasn’t happened. Clifton is ineffective due to his injuries. As you said keep Lang in there…at least he has some attitude.
.
Hard to be upset at a shutout though.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

At least the line has another week off to recover before Jarred Allen comes along with his chainsaw. Thats about all you can say about this game, yeah we won but does anyone care?

AdamInEngland said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I care. It was a game we had to win and, regardless of the issues, we did it in a convincing fashion. That has to count for something.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

True, but it had the feel of the Rams game a couple of weeks ago where GB were expected to win, and regardless of how well/badly they do so, its no news story when it happens.

AdamInEngland said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

It really is frusturating about the o-line and I agree with 100% about Campen. They just are not well coached. The fact that it took this long to see that Lang can play tackle shows how out of touch he is. I remember the podcast you had, I belive it was with the draft guys, they loved Lang as a tackle and thought he was a real sleeper. We already had depth at Guard, why not start him at tackle and if he can’t go then do your Colledge at LT. To me it just illustrates the problem with Campen.

matthew said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Wow, Aaron. Agreed on EVERY point.
-
Would add Grant’s innefectiveness as a runner. He can only gets yards when it doesn’t matter anymore, when the defense is too tired to make any plays. He’s a power runner that doesn’t have the bulk and the vision. He would be very good with a good OL, but he’s not a starting material.

PackersRS said in October 18th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I still disagree about Grant…he’s more than adequate considering the help he gets the OLine. Everyone harps on the Oline in pass protection because when they fail it’s obvious, but they’re just as bad for rushing (except for Lang).
.
And how can you say he gets yards when it doesn’t matter…the 4th quarter is when it DOES matter. When you’re in the lead you need to run out the clock, and that’s what he has done in the past few games.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Hard for me to call for a coach’s head when nearly all the penalties were on the player with the most experience, and who has been recognized by scouts and media as a top tackle. I think Clifton has as many penalty yards as the Lions made through three quarters.
=
The refs were pathetic too, those late hit calls were BS. And hey, if on the FIRST play of the game, you cant get the number of the offender correct, you shouldnt have called it.

bomdad said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

If its 3rd and short just outside field goal range in a close game in the 4th quarter, do you trust Grant to get those yards?

AdamInEngland said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Hey Aaron,

I’m happy for the win, but I called for Campen’s head on my facebook status!! I thought that might’ve been rash, and decided that YOU would be the man to talk me out of it. Turns out that we are on the same page! WOW!

What are the odds that Campen gets fired before the end of the season? And who would take over? What changes would we see? I think you may need to dedicate your own post to these questions!!

PackersThad said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:13 pm

The Packers do not have the players to compete at the highest level.
Plain and simple, end of story.

nc packer backer said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Larry Beightol wants to get back into the league.
Penalties (Number-Yards) 13 – 130
How many of those penalties were on the offensive line?

nerdmann said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Congrats to Double D, who is a superb player and human being and deserves much love from PackerNation.

I don’t know if God wants Judas to win another Super Bowl, but the media sure as hell does. I honestly think this season may be about teaching all of us exactly how sick other teams’ fans were of hearing this bullshit. And I’d like to smack Deanna Favre in the face the next time they show her gloating.

foundinidaho said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

NickGBP, AdamInEngland expresses exactly my point. And you got what I meant. Grant can’t get the yards we need for 2nd and shorts. That just doesn’t happen. And it’s like I said. Most bakcs in the NFL can get yards when they have a good OL. The real good ones are those who don’t depend entirely on their OL.
-
Grant, after he gets to the second level, can get an extra or two yards, but that’s it. He cannot turn a negative play into a positive one, he cannot make a defender miss, he cannot catch the ball, and he cannot be a constant 4 yard back, like Jamal Lewis, or Deuce McCalister where, for example, cause he doesn’t have the bulk. It really hurts me to say what I’m saying, him being an Irish alumni. But it’s the truth.

PackersRS said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Yeah, should bring Beightol. Can we get a website going? BringBackBeightol.com? :)

jrarick said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Don’t apologize for calling for Campen’s firing, Aaron. McCarthy should apologize for him still being here. No progress from a single player on our offensive line in three years. None. Ridiculous. BS.

lebowski said in October 18th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Finally,Matthews gets the start over Poppinga. Should have happened a long time ago.

seekr said in October 18th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

I’m glad we won and I’m glad the D was more aggressive today (and that Kampy had his hand on the ground), but c’mon guys, it’s Detroit. In fact, it’s Detroit without Stafford, Calvin Johnson and eventually without Culpepper.
______________________________________
The Packer O line is pathetic. Seriously, pathetic. The Lions had to use 1 or 2 of their O lineman on defense because they had no one left on their Dline and they STILL put way too much pressure on A-Rod.
______________________________________
Rodgers needs to run more when the pocket breaks down. If he’s going to get battered back there, at least gain some yards & put some fear in the opposing D that he might take off (and slide A-Rod!).
______________________________________
We had like 7 penalties barely into the 2nd quarter. I’m not buying that we can’t get rid of that as long as MM is here. Seriously, Clifton can’t line up on the line of scrimmage?? Twice?? Really??
_____________________________________
What happened to Tramon Williams. I haven’t listened to MMs comments after the game but I know Williams stopped returning punts.
_____________________________________
I just think that execution after a bye week is awful. Just embarrasing. I am concerned. Seriously concerned

Andrew In Atlanta said in October 18th, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I hate the penalties, but 6 out of the 13 were on the 3 most veteran guys on the squad. Hard to fault anyone but Clifton, Barnett, and Driver for those. And anyway, I loved Driver’s and Colledge’s PFs and to a slighly lesser extent Barnett’s.

Franklin Hillside said in October 18th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Good news Jordy Nelsen has a knee bruise no structual damage.
_____
O line is anticipating and leaning in the direction of the assignment. In fact thye lean so much the least distraction and they misstep. Clifton had three motion penalties by himself. That is coaching, lack of concentration and just poor playing. By the way Clifton’s injury was his ankle again.
_____
We, the fans, have been listening to the we’ll watch the films, self-analysis, and fix it bull shit for going on two years. It hasn’t been fixed yet. Maybe they do identify what is wrong, but it is obvious they have no one on the coaching staff who can teach how to correct the problem. MM, go back to Management School, take your self-analysis with you, and don’t forget Campen.

Ron La Canne said in October 18th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

“Fans need to come to grip with the penalties. They will be there as long as McCarthy is.”

Players know they won’t be held accountable for them.

Barnett was called for a facemask and he was actually laughing after the play.

I didn’t find it too funny myself.

IronMan said in October 18th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

While I agree with a lot of the sentiment here, and I’m not all too thrilled myself…
.
.
Bad opponent or not, you have to admit it’s hilarious..
Only in Wisconsin can you post a shut out at home, double the TOP of the opponent, top 425 net yards of offense, and have the fans sharpening the pitchforks and tarring the torches.
.
I know, I know, we should have scored more TD’s, the line didn’t protect well, etc and so forth, but take a moment and at least try to appreciate it’s a win we needed. Enjoy it. We can commence complaining and concerns on tuesday. Give yourself one day of contentment at work.

oppy said in October 18th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Sorry Cheesehead I can’t get on board with the Campen’s firing statement. The stupid scheme where playing wasn’t JC idea…Jags brought it here with all kinds of promises and MM fell in love.
James has stated MANY times he prefers a Power gap scheme..when the boss says put this in and make it work you do what your told.
Dump the ZBS scheme and everything that goes with it and watch this team improve on that O-line. Time to put the blame squarely on the man in charge.

PackerHQ.net said in October 18th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Oppy, I think Packer fans are just sick of being lied to by McCarthy. Sick of hearing how mistakes will be cleaned up. Sick of hearing how people will be held accountable. Sick of hearing how he’ll commit to running the ball, then when the perfect opportunity presents itself, 1st and goal, he tries another pass which blows up in their face. It’s just the same crap every week, and if the competition is a joke we win, but if the competition is good we lose. No progress at all.

lebowski said in October 18th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

Sick of….wins?

He won the game. Thats what should matter to Packer fans.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

completely agree oppy. 26-0 and people are calling for the head coach’s head on a platter. ridiculous. If you can’t enjoy you’re team shutting the opposing team out…why cheer for them at all?

We are dead middle of the league in penalty yards. I dont think its the pandemic its made out to be. Its like H1N1… it seems a lot worse than it really is, and a healthy team/person can over come it.

Offensive line play is terrible. I dont normally call for coaches to be fired, but what has Campen ever done to justify his hiring in the first place. Send a message, produce or leave. Between the constant penalties, the glaring blown assignments and the mind boggling Sack #s, its clear that the one thing really holding this team back is the O-line. Someone has to pay for it, and Campen is the guy. Hell, hire back Jagz.. at least he got his guys to produce and he’d be cheap.

Relax boys… a win is a win.

Packnic said in October 18th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

First off…Campan will NOT be fired during the season. MM hasn’t the rocks for it.

Secondly; perhaps fans like myself gripe about a winning game because we KNOW that if the team plays this way againest the Vikes, Steelers, etc…we will lose. No question.

Thirdly…at least we’re consistant..another 5 sacks to hold our average.

I’m not sure why Lang finally got in, but if MM was sincere about responsibility, he would have yanked Clifton after the second penalty. And Chad will start againest the Browns, I’ll bet.

BTW, Did Hawk make even one tackle? And if I’d been coach, Barnett would have been benched for laughing about his facemask penalty. It cost us 24 yds and gave them a first down.
Another BTW; Notice the scoring? 14-9-3-0 by quarters. Running out of gas?

retiredgrampa said in October 18th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Thank God I’m not alone in my optimism. Good posts Oppy and Packnic. Everyone is so overdramatic and negative…it sometimes brings me down. Man, I can’t imagine how much it would suck to be dissapointed after a win the way some people seem to get. I don’t get it.
.
And this wasn’t just a win, it was complete dominance on both sides of the field, regardless of the issues. It was a shutout, people. Regardless of the opponent, they are extremely rare. Can’t you find a reason to be happy after that, if even for a few minutes??
.
I think we need a new segment sometime during the week to keep these Packer fans away from the ledge and to keep things in perspective.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

I don’t know that I could feel worse about a 26 point victory. All the penalties and sacks are just unacceptable. MM does not have control of his men. Take the W’s how ever you can get ‘em, but playing at this level against anybody but Detroit and Cleveland will be certain losses.

GBP 4 LIFE

FITZCORE1252 said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Playing the Lions tougher than the Steelers did is like notching a moral victory and a W at the same time!
* * *
Back in reality, it was 26-0 vs. the Lions at home and without Stafford and later, Culpepper & no Megatron. Good for them for not screwing up too much. Hooray.
* * *
I don’t think Packer fans are particularly tough on the team. They are pretty similar to Bear fans. Take a listen to Chicago fans after Bear games. The names are different, but you’ll hear similar hopes & criticisms. Philadelphia fans are supposedly the toughest — they boo kids and Santa — but i don’t have enough experience with Eagle fans to confirm this.

Mr. Optimistic said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

nIce win, um… yay…

-don’t look that much like a playoff team tho, do we?

As for Campen’s head, maybe at year’s end. then he’ll be sacrificed to keep McCarthy in chips and beer. McCarthy’s not gonna budge before that. Why should he? We’ll fall 8-8 and Ted’s not gonna fire his head coach. So, who fires Ted? Murphy?

See my point?

In just four years these guys are locked in tighter than teamsters in an oil barrel.

joepacker said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Eagles fans are the rudest fans I’ve ever come across, and the least welcoming guests at their stadium. But I realize all fans of every team are critical… I just think people (in general) take it overboard. Try not to focus on the negatives….you’ll live longer ;) .
.
And I’m not sure if you are being facetious with your Steelers comment but I think it’s something that’s worth noting especially since both teams play similar defenses. The fact that the Packers D shut out the Lions when the Steelers struggled, especially when we’re so early in the 3-4 transition has to be worth cheering about.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I just feel like we’re a middle-of-the-road team. We beat the bad teams and lose to the good teams. There was nothing about this win that encourages me about the team. And, for the second season in a row, we do not have a reliable running game. I see a guy like steven jackson on the trading block, and how does a guy like that not make us instantly better? (Given there’s no O-Line guys on the market)

dustybricks6 said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Again, I find it baffling that shutting out a team is not indicative of a playoff caliber team. Of course it’s the Lions…but just how much better do they have to do in your eyes to be more than middle of the road? Just some of the distorted logic I’m talking about. I’ll stop harping on it though since it’s clear people want to find something to complain about regardless…

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

And hey…we could be the Bears with Cutler who just keeps scoring for the other team…

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

I played the role of the optimistic packer fan last season and I saw where it got me. I only need to touch the stove once to learn a lesson. Beat a real team and then I’ll start clearing my calendar for the post season.

dustybricks6 said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

All you rosy eyed optimists, gimme a break. The Lions without Stafford and Calvin Johnson are Purdue. Packers couldn’t score a freaking touchdown in 3 and a half quarters against a team that was fielding one starting defensive lineman. I’m glad you’re happy, enjoy it for one more week.

lebowski said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Again, I feel there’s alot wrong with the Packers right now, like many of you (You can ask anyone who was in the Gameday live blog with me today, I complain plenty too!).
.
That said, complaining and griping doesn’t actually do anything. I’m not impressed by the Packers’ win today over the Lions. I don’t think todays performance is an indicator we’re going to the play offs.
.
I do, however, know and appreciate that it’s a FACT that a win today is the first in a line of steps that need to be taken to make it into the play offs. So guess what? I’m going to enjoy it, if even just for the day, before I’m back to being concerned about the state of the Packers… (And full well knowing my concern doesn’t do anything to rememdy the Packers’ woes anyways :) )
.
Those that want Campen fired (Which I’m not necessarily abject to) should also think upon this: Firing James Campen doesn’t do ANYTHING to improve the O-line. HIRING A BETTER COACH might. So, the big question is, who is it that you suggest the PAckers replace Campen with overnight leading into week 7 of the 2009 NFL season?
.
Not trying to be rude, but if I walked into my boss’s office and said we need to fire my supervisor because he’s poor at his job, he’d ask me where the guy is who’s going to show up to replace him tomorrow.

oppy said in October 18th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

The final score says it all. Twenty Six to Zero = success.

NickGBP said in October 18th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Packers don’t need to replace Campen. He’s not doing anything, so don’t even have an offensive line coach and save the salary.

lebowski said in October 18th, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Firing Campen would would be fabulous. I’ve lost all confidence in McCarthy as a head coach. The guy can’t shape the big picture. He’s an excellent QB coach. That’s it.
* * *
I’ve never seen Packers shut out a team and still weep over how poorly we played. We weren’t good. The Lions just stink. I hate that I can barely be proud of the team, because watching that offensive line, I know that a real team can shred through our offense.

Cuphound said in October 18th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

It was a win they needed. There’s another week to hopefully fix the problems and build on it.
As for Campen, if he’s not committed to the ZBs, then they need someone, Jags, maybe, who is.
Can you really change blocking schemes in mid season or with personnel chosen for this scheme? Do they have the players for a power blocking line?
I believe they do work on the fundamentals in practice, but somehow leave it there. They seem to get rattled or pulled off game in game time. Also injuries are a disruption I don’t care what anybody says.
I don’t want a head coaching change. It means more disruptions and that will set development back. Add to that more money wasted on coaching hires and paying off contracts, rather than acquiring players.
This is a potentially good team and exciting to watch – just got to fix the problems, establish mental readiness, and up the level of play.

Glorious80s said in October 19th, 2009 at 9:47 am

Interesting posts everyone, but I think we are all leaving one enourmous elephant in the room… The biggest of part of why the oline is the way it is… Ted, *&%$ Ted Thompson, his believe in magical draft picks is failing, his ability to go after free agents is frightening and think of all the peoplw he has cut… Tauscher (which he finally corrected), KGB (for who justin f’n harrell, the biggest flop since the incradible bulk), the list of safeties (could have help against brett), it goes on and on.
_______________________________
Yes clear out McCarthy, if you can’t call decent plays find someone who can… for god’s sake there is shannahan, holmgren, and norm off the top of my head as coaches they could try for.
_______________________________
Last but not least with the trade deadline tomorrow and I may get harranged for this one… Grant and some draft picks to St. Louis for Stephen Jackson… just think about it. I know I get wood when I do.

pack4life said in October 19th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Dont bring another nfc north team in the picture. Look. We played the LIONS, without Johnson or Stafford, like lebowski said, as good as Purdue. And again gave up 2.5 sacks to a single player in Julian Peterson. We gotta maintain a block on that line. Tauscher, get ready man, we need you. We need to get rid of Clifton, and for once TED THOMPSON!!!!!!!!!!! GO GET SOME FREE AGENTS THIS YEAR! YOUR THOWING OUR TEAM AWAY

If a team could win in a shutout and look horrible doing it, the packers did. They got off to a great start, but we started seeing more of the classic packer characteristics I.e. Sacks, poor o line play, and too many penalties to count. Hopefully the pack can start looking better next week against “mangenious” and his disfunctuonal excuse for an NFL team! Go pack!
