Gut Reactions: Week Four vs Lions

Aaron's gut reactions to the win over the Lions.

  • Exactly as I feared - if the Packers had blown the Lions out, well, they should have. But they struggled in a win - so we'll all complain all week.
  • The offense showed they can run the ball when they want to. They just chose not to.
  • Mr. Woodson? I apologize.
  • None of Aaron Rodgers' interceptions were terrible decisions. (The first one intended for Jennings was more mis-communication than anything) But they were the result of what he talked about during training camp, wanting to take more calculated risks. As someone who has lobbied for him to be more aggressive, I can't kill him for giving me what I asked for.
  • Scott Linehan was two steps ahead of Dom Capers all afternoon.
  • Speaking of Capers, what is his fascination with rushing three down lineman on third and long? It's killing me. And the Packers.
  • Tramon Williams is probably playing better than anyone else on the team right now.
  • Glad to see McCarthy stick with the whole "accountability" theme by sending Jordy Nelson out there after TWO horrific fumbles on kick return. What a freekin' joke.
  • Mark Tauscher struggled once again.
  • If Morgan Burnett is hurt for an extended period of time, the defense is in some serious trouble.
  • Shaun Hill looked like Steve Young today. What will Donavan McNabb look like next week?

I know this will not play well with our host, but the last five minutes proved the Packers can run the ball *so long as Brandon Jackson isn't carrying it.* Sorry Aaron, but he was freaking awful carrying the rock. Marshall Faulk knows of which he speaks. He is not even worthy of washing the laundry of a certain former Wildcat. Nor of Dmitri Nance.

Quite frankly, he's a few plays away from working at an Omaha Jack in the Box.

Right. The one carry he was given where Chad Clifton completely blew the block is reason enough for your statement above. Never mind all the positive runs he had earlier in the game. Unbelievable...

Ummm... he had an 11 yard run and a 14 yard run. I think he had another 10+ yard run that was called back, but I might be misremembering that one.

They need to run the pitch-sweep more often. Awesome play.

Disagreed. Jackson was AWFUL once again. Undecisive. Lacked explosion.

I've made my mind that he can't cut it, and the "need more carries" excuse won't cut it... Not when Kuhn, with less opportunities, and being a converted FB, is doing so much better...

The fact that they gave Kuhn the ball all but one time (for negative yardage, natch) on the final drive tells you all you need to know about the burger-flipper formerly known as Brandon Jackson.

It's hard to keep having patience with BJax. He just seems to lack any kickstart to his runs.

Kuhn, by no means a speedster, looks like he's running downhill when he gets the ball (absent the atrocious draw design today). He explodes OVER the line of scrimmage. It seems like BJax shuffles up to the LOS, makes a cut and THEN starts to acclerate.

in all reality jackson has been horrible running the football. when you have one decent run per 10+ carries. thats not gonna cut it. he has no explosion and can't break a tackle. But in his defense he is not a bad 3rd down back catching short throws and screens, but thats all he should be doing

Brandon Jackson has never been the answer at RB. He takes a handoff, runs into someone, and waits to be tackled. I'm not sure whether he's being coached to go to the (alleged) hole, as diagrammed -- or whether he has NO vision. Another 2nd round pick that they need to ditch, much like Pat Lee.

Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn both each had (only) 9 carries.

John Kuhn had 6 (six) more yards than Brandon Jackson. Kuhn rushed for 39 yards, and Brandon Jackson rushed for 33- 3.6 yards/carry. That's not great, but it's not burger-flippin' stats, either.

Keep in mind, btw, that Kuhn had the luxury of getting the majority of his snaps on the last drive when defenses are most gassed, and the Lions had to be wary of giving up any big gains (they were playing off the line).

Brandon Jackson got blown up a few times due to poor, or non existent, blocking. That hurt his AVG as well.

Again, He wasn't great, but he wasn't horrible. He only had 9 touches. With a full compliment of touches, he could have broken off a few more big gains. Who knows? I place Jackson's struggles on a non-committal play caller. Packers were starting to gouge the Lions' D on the ground early in the 2nd Q, but MM doesn't have the patience to win a game via clock control, so the run game was abandoned yet again... Until the end of the game when it could have easily backfired on the Packers, trying to desperately protect a two point lead.

Agree, PackersRS. Why can't we just bring four on third and long, sometimes? Its not like having Brad Jones or Nick Barnett (or whoever) standing around 12 yards deep in a zone is yielding anything.

Like Aaron said, Schwartz dominated Capers. It's not how much you blitz, it's how and when.

Capers didn't mix much, that's what I'm saying. The blitz wasn't working because they were calling screens, so he abandons the blitzes? Also, Capers was so frightened of giving up big plays that he allowed EVERYTHING underneath.

It worked, we won, I get it. Just would like a more aggressive playcall. And blitz =/= aggressiveness...

The Packers' blitz was exposed all day. If the Packers are going to bring that many bodies they have to get to the QB. (And they can't let a journeyman quarterback escape the blitz and run for 40 yards.)

I don't know what the problem is here. There sure looks like a lot of talent on the defense. Where's the production? The Packers forced only ONE three and out all day long. Monday night against the Bears, again, only one three and out. You cannot rely on turnovers to get off the field. A good defense can find a way to get off the field. The Packers aren't anywhere close right now.

The most troubling part (to me) is that its not like the Packers have young DBs that are getting burnt and giving up big plays. For the most part, opposing offenses are being patient, working the soft spots in the defense, and taking what the Packer defense is giving. And the Packer defense is giving A LOT.

Capers definitely has some explaining to do. Because, right now, the defense looks like a lot less than the sum of its parts.

It's horrible and unfortunate that Jordy Nelson coughed up the ball twice.

But the guy has been a solid return man on pretty much every other KO return this year.

Bad days happen. I'm not saying he shouldn't be running the gauntlet for an hour after each practice this week- he should. But he's not a lousy return man, and it doesn't show any short comings in the coaching staff. Nelson has produced quite well. He had a bad day, but he's not a mistake.

The Defense played over 75 snaps including replayed snaps due to penalties. That's too many. Packers needed make some stops and then run the ball. Game plan was coverage today, not rush unless on third down. All I can think is that Capers was trying not to expose his secondary of Underwood and Bush by rushing 4 or 5. By the way, most of hills throws were 3 step, its tough to rush those, you have to play coverage. Packers need a running game, and they need to put in Lang and Bulaga for a couple of drives to get some comparative tape. Nice catch by Lee to end the game. I would trade Lee and a 4th for Lynch who carried 4 times for 8 yards today on an 0-4 team...

Granted, I was at a bar -- but it looked like Bush was culpable on a couple of big plays (imagine!).

Yes, Tauscher looked bad (again); Clifton can't hold his ground; Colledge is good for a few back-rubs. I'm all for Bulaga/Lang/Newhouse (he looked OK in the KC game -- raw, yes). Might as well, because the Oline isn't getting this team to the promised land (as is)

If I had to vote, right now, it's Tramon who gets the pro bowl vote. Not Woodson.

-Thought they might have backed off blitzing a bit at the end, because the defense was gassed.
-I disagree that Arodge should take more risks. I just KNEW they were going to come out and throw deep on that INT. That was reminiscent of a certain former QB who now plays east of Green Bay. Tom Rosseley rides again.
-Yeah, Tramon looks awesome.
-Absolutely agree that Jordi needed to take a seat.
-Kuhn looked like money out there today. LOL.
-I feel less badly about this game than I did about the Chicago game. Maybe the Lions really don't totally suck all that much? Hard to say at this point, but they hung right with us, as both teams swapped turnovers.

Hawk is playing well, in coverage. At the Bills, he played well. And Chillar played bad at Chicago.

I agree with the Bishop thing..He seemed to be a huge issue

After it looked like the blitzing and sending 5 or 6 wasnt working to well they should stopped..Seemed like they did a few more times and it really hurt..

Majority of people say the Lions suck, but I think their DL is one of the best around, prob better than the Bears..It looked like our OL did an okay job vs them

I also think Hill is better than Stafford...

The Pack should won this hands down, they still did a few things that they need to work on..( SCREENS PLEASE)

I don't think it mattered much WHO ran the ball when we ran outside. Our tackles can't run block. All of Kuhn's runs were behind the guards, most of them behind Sitton. Kuhn runs straight ahead, for the most part, behind our strength. I sometimes think BJax has happy feet too much. He's not Barry Sanders. Just take the 3-4 yards and be done with it. That said, I don't think he had a horrible game.

I'm more concerned that with about 7 minutes to go and the defense having been on the field all day, we chuck it deep on the first play and it gets picked off. Great for taking chances, but not there. Run some clock and give the defense a rest for goodness sake

Jackson is not a RB, he's a Dancer.
Kuhn and Hall are Dosers.
Jennings can't catch unless it's dropped directly in his hands and nobodys bothering his ora.
Replace Jennings with Nelson at Receiver.
Replace Nelson with ?anybody? at punt returns.
Jackson is a Dancer.
Rodgers needs to throw the ball over the receivers head when he's running deep. Way too much practice on these run out 12 yds, come back for the ball catches to know what there doing in the long pass.

Again, just like last year, time of possession and field position not in favor for the Packers and MM just ignores it, giving a lesser team a chance to beat the Pack at home.

When you score quick, you leave plenty of time for the other team to match it. Make a few mistakes yourself (penalties or turnovers) and a Lions team or Tampa Bay of last year have a chance to beat you. Do the same game plan against Big Ben, BF, or even Flaco, you lose 2 out of 3.

What a buncha frickin' whiners! Was it a good win? Hell, no. But Detroit isn't as bad as people think...shoulda beat the bears, hung tough with Philly and Minn. This was their game of the season. Pack stunk it up on 3rd down D (detroit conversion rate was astounding). But y'all gotta get off this hang Brandon Jackson thing. He had some hard runs and they just didn't open much up for him. Watch the tape on his limited carries. He had guys on him in the backfield. THERE JUST WEREN'T holes most of the time. Sorry, but Jackson is awful. Is his average up to 3 yet? He's not Grant, which is a positive in some people's eyes, but that's about all he has going for him. Not-Grant's former popularity was a function of being the backup. Just put Kuhn in there and be done with it.

Those of you with tunnel vision need to take a look around the NFL and watch some of the other games. Heck, even just check out the scores. I'll help get you starts for Week 4:

Carolina 14, NO 16
Indy 28, Jacksonville 31
San Fran 14, Atlanta 16

Do you think any of these teams are calling their playoff chances dead because of a close win or loss? Hardly. The season is 16 games long, and we've only just finished the first quarter.

It's a long road to make such rash, reactionary judgements so early.

carolina, jax, and sf are all capable of BEATING this Packer collection of talent.

That's what I will refer to them as for the rest of the year... "a collection of talent",,, because they are not a TEAM.

this year's Packer team IS NOT last year's saints.
they had...

-three rbs who were at least functional
-clutch special teams
-an OL lightyears ahead of this Packer line
-a good head coach

...all things the 2010 Packers are missing

I'm late to the party, I guess, but I'm absolutely shocked at all the people bitching about Brandon Jackson. People, our run blocking flat out sucked today. Period. End of story. Not saying BJax is great...don't get me wrong here, but come on people...he did better than to deserve a bunch of blog complaints, ESPECIALLY given the run blocking.

What concerns me is overall impression I have that Detroit is more well-coached than the Packers. Linehan called one hell of a game today. There can be no argument. And our special teams? SPECIAL, arent' they?

Every week for the last couple years, I have got to listen to my brother (HS coach) tell me how poorly coached we are, and how McC can't possible be a good enough coach to win a Super Bowl. One of these days, I'm jumping on that bandwagon.

Just not what I was expecting after the Bear loss, Lions at home, poor showing. I agree Lions a much improved team as I mentioned pre-season, but time of pos, and all the under routes against our D, poor running game and bad decisions by Arod=ugly win.
This team needs to get it together soon, nothing special with this squad as of late.

I think it's his supporters that make me want to criticise Not Grant. "Grant sucks" "Grant falls over when he's hit" "Can't break tackles" "Can't find the hole" ...and so on. -- which sounds like a description of Not Grant. Anyway, now that they've got their wish and Not Grant is starting, all of a sudden the run blocking is no good. Well, it's not the greatest, i'll give them that. But damn if Kuhn and Grant don't do more with it.

The best part of this game is that it gets us one week closer to Harris and Starks off the PUP.

"Speaking of Capers, what is his fascination with rushing three down lineman on third and long? It's killing me. And the Packers."

Thinking the same thing.

The nicest thing I can think of to say about this game is that it was a beautiful warm day at Lambeau. And thank god for Charles Woodson.

Watch BJax carries more closely and you'll see that he can sue his O-line for non-support. Just terrible blocking. That being said, he is best suited as a 3rd down back, no doubt about it.

The biggest difference between Ron Wolf and TT is that Ron was willing to pull the trigger in-season to address a concern. Next year's draft will not help the 2010 Packers get to the Superbowl, TT needs a RB and needs one now!

If I remember correctly, the Packers started improving last year when the players gave themselves their own "Come to Jesus" talk. Our team is talented, but sloppy. They need a coach who knows how to consistently light a fire their asses. No team works with a coach who accentuates the positives and eliminates the negatives. Teams need coaches who impose discipline. Harshly.

It's nice that we beat the Lions.

Cuphound, you are quite right. I suspect another one of those is coming. Too bad MM isn't the one that ever seems to deliver it. Although he did look extremely pissed off in the press conference today.

Also, Morgan Burnett? - will be missed. I swear the Packers have a damn target on the back of their jerseys. No more injuries, please, St. Vincent.

It amazes me how much smarter everyone on here is than TT, MM, DC. What are their combined years of experience in the league?
What is all of our combined experience in the league? I'm not saying the entire staff is beyond reproach, but good grief, do some of you really think you know more than Dom Capers about preparation, scheming, and half time adjustments?? Despite his possible flaws, I for one, am glad to have him...big, big uptick over previous coordinators. There are just a ton of people on this site who really know a lot about football. Until I started reading this site, I thought I was pretty knowledgeble regarding the game. Seeing what gets written here, I realize there are people that are just a lot smarter than me who contribute to CHTV. But there are also a lot of people on here who just seem just a tad detached from reality in thinking they know more than guys who have really successful in the NFL for a very long time. We don't have to agree with everything they do, but we ought to recognize that they were hired for their jobs for a reason...they are better at it than we are.

It's what I call the "water on the floor" test. I am not a plumber. I know very little about plumbing.

However, I don't need to be a licensed plumber to know if a plumber is doing a bad job. If I hire a plumber to do a job, and he leave and the next day there is water all over the floor, I know that he did a bad job.

Right now the Packers have left water all over the floor. Is it lack of talent, poor coaching, bad schemes, bad luck, or bad game time decision? I can't quite say (but it seems to me that lack of talent is not the problem).

So then it seems most likely "poor coaching"...who would you like to see come in in place of what we have?

It's not like that. Let's see how this team looks at the end of the season and reassess.

Immaturity. They (with exceptions) don't know what it takes to win consistently.

Whether Aaron admits it or not, Jackson's not very good. But, let's keep pretending he hasn't had enough of a chance or my favorite, "it's too soon to tell."
