Gut Reactions: Week 8

  • How does McCarthy's team come out, in THIS game, and lay a gigantic egg in the first half?
  • The stage looked too big for Rodgers
  • What the fuck was Dom Capers doing with all the 3 man pressure in the first half?
  • TJ Lang didn't look as good as I thought he would - but he still looked good
  • The sack where Lang blocked down and let Jared Allen go will mystify me until I die
  • Favre and Longwell, two ex-Packers, played much better than their replacements
  • Johnny Jolly should be cut - just to make a point - but he won't be
  • Penalties sure mattered tonight
  • The Thompson/McCarthy Watch has begun

Where were Kampman and Jenkins? Oh, and to all the people beging for Desmond Bishop PLEASE SHUT UP. Bishop was the breakdown on at least two if not three backbreaking long plays. Bishop was not good.

I can't believe Aaron Rodgers is still alive. Rodgers, Matthews, Hayvner and Driver are about the only top notch, consistant players on this team right now.

I dont see how any person can blame anything here on Rodgers. The Vikings got pressure on him with 3 and 4 rushers. That leaves like 300 Vikings in coverage and people start crying about holding the ball too long.

Bottom line their offensive and defensive lines are better than the Packers offensive and defensive lines.

I hope Favre never see's Lambeau Field again. Never retire that douchebags number.

I think it's important not to be too emotionally engaged with this outcome. We're a team that has no offensive line. Considering that we have no offensive line, this outcome was remarkably good. We can at least be confident that we will do well against poor teams, be competitive with mediocre teams and today's game shows that we won't be humiliated by good teams. Recall that there were several points where we closed the gap. Given the absence of an offensive line, this is impressive.
*
This is a team built on the coaching of Mike McCarthy. We know what to expect now.

The part about all of this that makes me the most upset is that the Vikings are not a franchise that has been run THAT MUCH better than the Packers. Brett Favre has truly transformed that team. It's almost cheating.

In the NFL, parity is supposed to rule. Spend 1st rounders on WR and RB when you don't have a QB? Bad move. UNLESS.....

Favre basically let the Vikings bypass parity. They didn't have to trade anything away for him. They didn't even have to get into a bidding war in free agency for him. They didn't have to focus on developing a QB to go with their O-Line and RB. They got him FOR FREE(figuratively speaking).

It's ridiculous and evil. They will fail in the long run, sure, but for 2 nights against the Packers, Favre won games for the Vikings, and they didn't have to do a damn thing right to get him.

I've supported MM and TT up until now, but this is getting tiring. It's MM's job to get his team ready to play, and they WERE NOT READY in the first half. If he would show up at the press conference pissed off about this loss, I could still respect the guy. But watch - he'll come out with the same old "we made some mistakes" and "I have to look at the film" BS. I'm ready to move on. Have some balls, Murphy!

MM, if he does not make playoffs this year, will probably be gone as a direct result of this game. If the Vikings make it to the Super Bowl, Murphy will have to make a decision about what to do with Thompson. One of them, in my opinion, will be gone at the end of the year IF we dont go to the playoffs.

I don't have the benefit of videotape CSS but I wish I did. You could be right about Bishop, but i saw him cause the fumble on the kick return and provide coverage in a key 3rd down incomplete pass. Maybe he messed up other stuff but i didn't see it

Rodgers played very poorly in the first half but had a ridiculously good 2nd half.

Looks like Capers may not be the patron saint of defense he was made out to be. Either that or we simply don't have the talent to compete in this defense against better teams. I'm more inclined to lean toward the former at this point

For a while over the last week I was thinking they must be improving. Boy I fell for that one. The Blame Falls Directly on TT's Head. Six more sacks Ahole.

-With the exception of the 2 pt conversion play, Grant finally showed something as a receiver.
-It was a tough loss, but I fail to see how you can hang this one on TT. McCarthy, maybe. I've stood by him a long time but I can't see how his team comes out flat to start this game.

OK, I've been a Packer fan since 1965 - hello everyone! My impressions of the tonight's game and the Packers: Packers suck! Some serious re-thinking needs to be done between MM & TT who, btw, are doing a sh***y job! Its the same old story in GB: no O-line, secondary is suspect & NO RUNNING GAME! Capers is a COWARD,
has a losing defensive record against Favre and really, has no idea how to defense him. Packers are lucky to go 7 - 9 this season. The NFC north will be a battle for second place and I fear the Bears will win that battle.

i can't imagine how frustrated charles woodson is right now. i'm right there with him.

i'm not 'one of those guys,' and perhaps i'll feel differently when i don't have so much vomit to clean up - but to me this was a coaching loss.

19 rushing attempts - 4 of them rodgers.
41 passing attempts.

it's really been that simple every time i get frustrated with mccarthy.

SLOW DOWN THE GAME. WEAR DOWN THE VIKINGS D. KEEP FAVRE OFF THE FIELD. GROW SOME GODDAMNED STONES AND SHOVE IT DOWN THEIR THROAT. WIN A BIG GAME OR MAKE OTHER CAREER PLANS.

donald, i'm sorry, you're wrong this time. just plain wrong.

it's maybe 'not an option' when you're down by three scores in the fourth quarter - but mm got himself into that mess, as usual.

when you've given up on the run before you even give it a go - and you have 49 yards in the first half - that's a playcalling issue.

i remember liking mm when he won a game two years ago with a hugely unbalanced pass to run ration - his reaction was basically, 'if it's working, why go away from it.' i like his 'stones' to not be conservative and use logic there and to answer that question boldly.

the respect i had at that time has slowly melted away with every loss the packers have where rodgers gets beat up, we have no rhythm, and mm calls 3-1 pass to run. it isn't cute anymore.

This season is exposing that the Packers' weakness is talent. Ted Thompson is excessively dependent on the draft: too many of his selections are not Super Bowl calibre. While I question whether or not McCarthy is sufficiently motivational as a coach, he is a very clever play caller. Therefore, I now question Thompson's fitness as a GM.

Sorry, but I didn't bother to read the 1st 48 comments. I got stuck on the "stage looked too big" for Rodgers.
--------
What the hell is that? That is absolutely ridiculous. Was he covering kicks? Is he a running back? Was he trying to rush their QB? Was he trying to protect the QB? Was he getting STUPID penalties call on him? No to all.
-------
He was running for his life while his line couldn't block a 3-man rush all night AGAIN. He was making plays, yes making plays while his fat coach inexplicably refused to keep more people in to protect him. Before i read this post, I was thinking to myself that, in this game, Rodgers looked almost like he was getting used to running for his life. I mean, he SHOULD. Cuz it ain't gonna change any time soon.

MM got outcoached by a dress-wearing pedifile. When Rodgers obviously was stuggling in the first half, was holding the ball too long, and had no rhythm, MM needs to work some screens, short timing routes and plays designed to get the ball out of his hands in 1.5 seconds or less. Or use Grant between the tackles.

I can't foresee ever welcoming back that db #4 to retire his number. Right now I couldn't care less if he goes into the hall as a Viqueen or a jet. I'm getting smack calls from women in my bible study during the first half. TT and MM are responsible for me losing my religeon and perhaps hitting a girl.

I never thought I'd see the day when I thought our players were less disciplined and bigger idiots than a Vikings club. Headbutting after a key third down stop? WTF? They were killing me today.

Green, who hasn't played a game in a year, showed more spunk than Grant. That screen or pass in the flat, where Green broke the tackle in the backfield to make a positive play, showed Grant's problem. He simply doesn't break tackles...and when you have a struggling OLine you're going to get touched a lot. You need to be able to break through those weak tackles and Green showed more ability than Grant did in his limited time. That's scary.

I think this game was lost on special teams. Close the gap to 4 points and let Harvin break his 3rd return of the game. THe Vikings played on a short field the entire game, you can't do that against a good team. Crosby makes that fieldgoal and thats a whole different ballgame. He looks lost this year, not confident outside of 40 yards.

The question now is,...what can be done at this point? Answer is NOTHING! We can't trade for help, we can't draft for help, it's too late for anything but what-ifs and swearing at Management, who richly deserve it. Many of our players are disappointments but none are as big as Capers is. The definition of stupity fits him to a tee.

Piedmont, MM being a "clever play caller" is arguable and the talent level may well be in question regarding certain deff. & off. positions (and that puts TT squarely in the cross hairs) but something else is seriously lacking... and the low key approach of McCarthy's is not helping the matter at all in my humble opinion - sometimes even a mediocre player can be driven to excel under the right guidance.

ddd, i don't think ryan grant is necessarily the answer - but he's currently our #1 back. more run attempts is the point. if you don't see how obvious the need for that is, please don't apply for the coaching job when it opens.

green, jackson, grant - WHOEVER. just make an attempt. it's one of the few football cliches that i believe in. sticking with a run game early and often (at least approaching balance) is helpful to so many other aspects of your game - especially the things we're having trouble with (protecting qb, game tempo, wearing down d-line, slowing down the pass rush, etc.) that it is folly to be as stubborn as mm is about running his pass offense.

i feel old fashioned being such a curmudgeon about it, but as frustrating as sherman was as a playcaller - his insistence on a strong running game sounds really nice right about now. that's a difficult things to say.

- what the hell happened to mason crosby?! either our kick-offs are short giving it to the returner at the 10,15, or 20 yard line!!! the squib kick had nothing to do with crosby, we got lucky and the viking moron tried to do too much. i won't even mention his ability (or lack there of) to make field goals under pressure. we lose special teams hands down today. and our kick returners? questionable. tramon dances too much and green is old and not explosive at all. can't we get one of those young guys to return a kick-off? if we do better at special teams today, our defense may have even played well enough to make us win the game.

- once again, very little pash rush. kampan has yet to make an impact. something is wrong when you are not utilizing your best players.

- again, the touches to jennings and driver in the first half were almost non-existent. not utilizing our best players. as soon as we did (in the 2nd half) we get back in it!

- this is a good team, not great. we only beat the bad and just ok teams. we can't beat the great teams. and won't be able to until changes are made. a little hope was lost today, which seems to happen a little bit during every game, when I realize we aren't as good as we could be...meh.

I don't know that it makes sense to call for McCarthy's head right now. He's not going anywhere, not during the season. That said, his seat just got a lot hotter. I think he's got some work to do to keep his job after the season.

DD is wrong about the running game. Some runs worked- the zone stretch for example- but McCarthy insisted on running in the middle, and that worked not at all. Not sure where he got that idea.

Maybe it was the same place that Capers got the idea to rush 3 at Favre. I guess there's a reason that he's 0-8 against him, or whatever it is now. You actually need to pressure Favre to get him to make mistakes. If you give him enough time to take a nap, hit the snooze button, and smoke a side of beef, he's gonna be able to find someone open. And if you do decide to pressure him, maybe it makes some sense to play press covreage instead of 10 yards off the WR, so that they can't just turn around and catch something coming out in 1 second.

In all, I gotta say I'm *really* disappointed in Capers and McCarthy right now, in calling a game that was destined to lead to a loss. If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought they were trying to lose the game.

Wow. I really don't know what to say. I have never been so upset with the Pack in life. That first half was truly terrible. We can all take consolation from the fact that Brett was booed like crazy upon entering The Frozen Tundra. I hope he realizes what he's bow done to make what was once the most adoring fan base into the most hateful one.

Okay. Done with that dufus. If you could sum up that last year and a half years of Packer gameplay, you would wind up with today's game. A horrible and overused running game, obnoxious and totally undisciplined penalties, and coaching decisions that make you want to bang your head against the nearest hard surface (kicking to Harvin again, and again, and again). What really killed the Pack tonigt was the field position, and the missed opportunties (the vikings center is breathing a sigh of relief somewhere) AND ThE SACKS. Yeah, I know they were up against Jared Allen but they have got to do a better job, and that Babre has to go. No question. All in all, not much good to take away from today. Just a lot of necessary improvement. There's kits of season left, and anything can happen if football.

@Joshy - I agree that a RUNNING GAME is sorely needed in GB, but honestly, who do we have to step in and carry the load? Green is not in top form ( but he has the heart - god luv him!) and Grant, maybe -
but he needs an o-line to clear the way because he is not a STEVEN JACKSON, ADRIAN PETERSON or a MERRIAN BARBER.
Jees! Remember, Ravens and Steelers are down the road!

The stage was certainly too big for Rodgers in the first half. He played like garbage-- holding the ball for too long, refusing to throw the ball away, not running when that was clearly the best option, not moving around the pocket properly, not feeling the pressure. He was better in the second, for certain.
---
The penalties are what pisses me off about the coaching the most. It's like a culture of lawlessness on the team. Dumb penalties need to be punished. Moronic penalties like Jolly's are completely and absolutely unacceptable. Contracts should be rewritten. Something needs to be done.
---
Barbre is not a good player, despite his alleged athletic gifts. He can't recognize a stunt to save his life. I hope to god Tauscher takes over the position next week, and Lang or Colledge takes over the position next season. Keep Wells at center, have Spitz play left guard, and Colledge or Lang play RT, if Clifton's healthy. Then can Campen and hire a proven coach.
---
I'm glad this shitfit is over, and I hope the Pack rallies to make the playoffs, or at least finish with a winning record. I'm looking forward to Favre getting injured and the Vikings crapping out early in the playoffs.

Emotional first reactions are always dangerous. What went wrong in the first half, the game plan - should have run and run and run. What are all those full backs for? Rodgers looked lost, you could see it in his eyes, and was off in his throws. A running game would have given him the chance to get settled. Plus, as above, a running attack would have pounded on the defensive line - to set up the pass.
Mistakes now cost them a very big game.
How could this team not be ready for what the Viking brought? The coaches prepare them. How could they not know the importance of this, the level of effort they would need?
This loss I mostly put on the players and if Woodson is bummed out, maybe he ought to look at his own leadership. The defense, though, had its moments.
I watched Tim Tebow play for the Gators, you see the determination in his eyes. It's what I hoped this team would bring. I did not see that here, with exceptions.
Yes, they came back, in garbage time. With the game on the line they failed. It may be a flaw they have to accept with AR, who has a lot of positives. They should build a strong line and a decent running game - and not put themselves in late game must win situations.
Nor do the players seem to respect their home field and fans for all their words. First they let Ocochinco do the leap, now they let Favre and the Vikes have the run of the place.
This is a fatal loss and they will look back on with regret for a long time. I don't think a playoff would redeem it and this team could not handle that pressure.
It seems the wrong people win. I hope MM and TT can stay, they were fundamentally right in 08 and I'd sure hate to have BF get another victory.
You might not be able to erase 16 years, but you can sure throw mud and step all over it. Humble? LOL
Sad to say, though, the fans, the GB tradition had no champion today.

How in the frick does Favre call this "one of his most satisfying wins at Lambeau?" WTF!!! What a tool. He just likes screwing all the Packer fans. I don't blame anyone but fricking Baghead Brett. He should NEVER be allowed in the Packer hall of fame, let alone his number retired. How can he possibly be happy that he disappointed MILLIONS of Packer fans this year. Joshy - understand. Yes, pound the opponent with your running game - 10 attempts is a sad commentary on the Packer's coaching staff play calling, but McCarthy loves the passing game ( in a way I can't blame him - sort of - we have , I think, one the best receiving corps in the NFL but what good is that if your o-line can't keep your QB's ass off the ground? ) Still, Pack's running game is no good because it does not have that marquee RB!

As far as I am concerned, he can enter the HOF has a Viking. He is DEAD to me!!! How can he possibly be happy to have the Packers defeated? How? How? How? Is that a "real" Packer? He orchestrated getting to Minnesota to defeat the Packers. Now he has done it and is happy? Are you kidding me? I would NEVER go to another company just to screw my former employer. WTF. Unfricking believable!!!

I've been skulking around pack websites for a while. Really like this one. After today I've got to chime in.
2nd & 3, in the Queens teritory, less than 6 minutes left. MM chooses to pass!!!! WTF?? I totally agree with comments about needing to run the ball. This was the perfect time. Yes the pass plays got them back in the game, but you've got to think Grant, or even Green could have gotten those 3 yards in 2 plays. At the same time controlling the ball, and the clock.
What did they get, a sack.
You can trash the O-line, but they are not getting a fair shake with MM's play calling. There needs to some balance or they are constantly on their heels.

Joshy: seriously Sherman didn't insist upon a running game he had a GREAT offensive line and a top 5 running back. Of course he is going to run the ball. Holmgren put together some pretty damn good teams without a running back or dominant offensive line. He used the short passing game instead. The Packers need to do what they are good at. They are not good at running the ball. They would not have won this game if Grant would have had 15, 20, or 40 carries.

Ever since I found this site, I've been slamming Favre alot. And at the end of te day, it just amazes me what has happened. For literally my whole life, I have never conciously remebered another person as the Packers quarterback. We all loved him, and it was one of the greatest fan-player relationships ever. Brett, we don't want to hate you, but you've given us no choice. How could you throw away the love of a whole fan base. You would have been the most adored player in history, and there would be six names painted in white on the wall in Lambeau. I hope your happy, but you have completely lost our respect. We will boo you like every other opposing player in Lambeau because that's all you are to us now. :(

Its all Sherman's fault! #sarczsm

Bottom line, MM doesn't know what the hell he is doing. This team has NO discipline and was NOT prepared to play in the first half of this VERY important game.
.
If you still support MM after this game you are an idiot. He will NEVER lead this team to a SB. Period.
.
And to those who have accused me of being a fair weather fan, go have sex with yourself.
'
Because of your accusations, I will be working extra overtime so I can attend ANOTHER game at Lambeau this year. And I will make sure to rub in your effing face. More pics/vids/women....etc.

Joshy - One more thing my friend: I watched the Rams @ Detroit and St. Louis put the game on Steven Jackson's shoulders (on a losing team but 3rd rusher in the NFL) in the second half and he carried the day. What Jackson & the Rams did proves your assertion but my point is that GB does not have the RB to replicate Jackson's performance. I'm an old dinosaur and a tandem of a lead blocking fullback and trailing half back is what GB needs but is not utilized (?: why did TT draft this kid from LSU?) Pack needs better talent at the RB position.

Johnny Jolly, who did commit a senseless penalty that led to a Vikings TD, was also the best D lineman for the most part throughout the game. Cutting Jolly to prove a point would be cutting off the nose to spite the face.
.
For Lang to "still look good" against one of, if not THE, premiere pass rushing DE's in the NFL in only his second career start as a rookie is a roaring success, and could very well signal the end of the Clifton era.
.
For all the complaints about not blitzing Favre, the Packers did blitz, and didn't get home. Also, a fine example of how blitzing can get you in trouble was the overload blitz from the weak side that brought a LB and a DB and resulted in a TD pass when Brent rifled one into the void left behind. As a matter of fact, I believe Charles Woodson was one of the stonewalled blitzers on that play, so he should be careful with his own criticisms. You can call all the blitz plays you like; if the players don't get to the QB, all you've done is left a hole in your defense. Clay Matthews looked alright in pressures, though, so at least that's a positive sign.
.
While I do have some serious questions about McCarthy's play calling, I have to come to this conclusion: The Packers just aren't as good of a football team as the Minnesota Vikings, and they got outplayed by a better team. It pains me to say it.
.
That said... Percy Harvin is the game-changing element on this Vikings team. it would be almost criminal if he wasn't awarded the game ball in the Vikings locker room. The field position he provided the Vikings all night was the true difference maker in this game.
.
I'm now going to sob myself to bed.

There is still hope. Make the wildcard and there is a chance Packers could play the Vikes. Not an easy road ahead, but may be today's loss will be a wakeup call (saw a bit of that in second half).
.
I'd take one-playoff win over two regular seasons wins anytime.
.
If I am asked to pick any current QB to replace Favre right now, I'd pick Aaron Rodgers hands down.
.
But I am not going to let my team loyalty blind me. The only reason Favre is a Viking today - Ted Thompson needed to justify his first round pick and Rodgers' contract. If Rodgers' draft had played out a couple of years later, we'd all be one big happy family with a great replacement waiting in the wings watching Favre beat the Vikes today.

Penalties need to be fixed but never are. That's on the coaching. Special teams sucked tonight. Mason Crosby has been dangerously inconsistent this year. Rogers has to get rid of the ball or at least not take sacks when he can get rid of it. The Packers were beneficiaries of 3 turnovers and not one of them was turned into a touchdown. Clay Matthews will be great.

Wow! Alot said, alot to be said.
1.McCarthy is the worst game planner in the business. Packers will never be champions on his decisions. It took 3quarters to do what they should have done to start with. Rookie tackle, no help til' the late in the 3rd quarter. No quick drops for Rodgers. No blitzes on Favre. Kickoffs deep to the top returner in the league. No screens to Green until late in the game. If anything needs to be cleaned up, it's McCarthy who needs to clean up his act and learn to coach. Point 2 next.

2.Favre has become classless. He handled the situation well but showed lack of class towards Packer fans. He feels he's above all fans, he feels equal to players only. He still has it as a quarterback, always did, but Kyle Orton has proved that with a O-line like they have, you can look great without being great. Put Rodgers with a line like that and he's league MVP. He was the most exciting Packer player ever, but now he's looking for more pub. and he'll get it.

3. Rodgers will have his day. He's ahead of Favre, Manning, and Marino in stats at the same point in their careers. It won't happen though til' a new coach comes along, McCarthy has lost my faith for good. Rodgers did hold the ball too long, but I remember Favre did the same thing in his second year, but was bailed out with a better line. Rodgers already broke a record Favre can't beat, many more to come.

Kampan will be gone too for the way they've treated him. My goodness, Wolf took a chance getting a blue chip player Reggie White, for the defense, TT better do the same or he's history soon.

Packer secondary IS SUSPECT! I've watched many Packers games and the secondary CAN NOT compete with the top notch receivers in the league. In the 2007 NFC championship Plaxico Burress burned them every time and made the remark, "They can't cover me!" to the Packer sideline. So true.
