Gut Reactions: Week 13

Aaron's Gut Reactions from the Packers' win over the Vikings.

  • The Packers just like to give us all mini-heart attacks, don't they?
  • Two weeks in a row now, Mike came out with a really good look on offense (last week, running out of the I formation, this week with a bevy of three step drop passing plays) that he got away from way too soon.
  • Can we rip the 3rd and 1 delay give to Kuhn out of shotgun right out of the playbook? Please?
  • Really liked what I saw out of Barclay at right tackle. Obviously lots to work on, but he's a battler.
  • I hope never to see a flea-flicker as horrific as the one the Packers ran that resulted in an interception.
  • The effort on defense on Peterson's long TD was atrocious.
  • Ryan Pickett played another in a long line of tough, anonymous games.
  • What you saw today may not have been pretty, but that was a gutsy performance by the Packers.
  • I'm starting to think McMillian may have had a point about the NFL having a hit out on the Pack with the refs.
  • Really loved James Starks' running today. He still runs too high, but he keeps his legs driving.
  • Morgan Burnett is going to have nightmares about Adrian Peterson and sweet dreams about Christian Ponder
  • Mason Crosby is officially out of his slump. Yes, this is true because I have written it on the Internet. So let it be told...
  • Nice to see Jennings back out on the field.
  • Packers are back in first place after their win and the Bears' overtime loss to the Seahawks.
  • Big divisional win - and now its time for the Pack to get ready for another one. Lions come to town riding a brutal losing streak.
  • On a side note - thanks to everyone for making Cheesehead TV part of their daily Packers routine.

Some of those holding penalties... not to mention none on the Vikings. I'm inclined to agree about the refs.

The worst was the play where Ponder was able to scramble for a 3rd down conversion because both Raji and Moses were being bear-hugged! The refs have an aversion to throwing holding flags on the teams we play. Nice to see the team persevere a win anyway.

What about the hold on Walden on Peterson's long td run. Walden got hooked on the back side - All after two phantom holding calls against the pack

What about the horrible holding penalty on TJ Lang that wiped out a TD. Packers ended up settling for a field goal but those 4 points could have been huge in the game and for a portion of it, it was huge.

I live near Minnesota and heard their post game radio show. They were even talking about how bad some of the holding calls against the Packers were. Brought up the one to take away the TD specifically.

What killed me about that play was that there was a ref looking dead at the hold as AP ran by.

Yes the refs were bad. But the roughing the passer on Rodgers after the pick to Allen was a terrible call as well. It goes both ways. You can't pick isolated incidents, you need to look at the game as a whole and that roughing the passer was a big enough play that it just about evened out.

Surprised no one mentioned the 2 face mask penalties that were failed to be called. One turned Cobb's head the mask was pulled so hard and the other was inadvertent but still should have been called!

If the vikes had any semblance of a qb, we lose this game. Horrendous playcalling once again by McCarthy on all but two drives. There is no reason Kuhn should ever run it again. We stand no chance against the good teams playing like this. The middle of the field was wide open...again...and again we insist on forcing shit deep. Infuriating.

Finley and Barclay played well. So there's that.

You could also say that if the Vikes didn't have the best runner in the game, we win by more than just two scores.

Yeah, not everything was executed well, including things we've seen blow up in our faces before. Frustrating, sure, but expecting perfect execution from any NFL team, particularly one with crippling injuries on both sides of the ball, is just silly. Even the best teams will attempt things that don't work.

That 11 minute, 18 play drive for the FG was possibly the most impressive thing I've seen out of our offense all year. That was the game, IMO.

Well said Juice. The Packers are playing without a huge chunk of their preferred starters, including their best defensive player. Plus, a thin o-line lost maybe their second best lineman fairly early in the game. I thought it was a nice win, not pretty, but nice.

Russell Wilson is getting back in my favor after his comments about the Fail Mary pissed me off. 8 & 4 is impressive, considering how this season started.

Forget about the refs, they helped us big time when Rodgers got picked but they called it back on a weak roughing the passer.

How about Barclay? AR got more protection in the 2nd half than he has since Bulaga went down. I think when TJ gets healthy, hopefully his ankle isn't too bad, we put him back at LG and give Barclay more of a chance.

I agree about Barclay... I watched him alot after he went in. He surprised me. I thought he played really, really well. And EDS, to me had a rough, rough game.
I personally would like to see Barclay play RT going forward and when Lang is healthy to play him at LG. Then your back to your normal 4 guys and 1 new guy in Barclay.
I was really impressed with his nastiness. He really seemed to fight today.

I wondered this as well. I think if we could get Lang back in LG and let Barclay play RT, that could be interesting. Next weeks test will certainly explain a lot more, but he played well.

Our 3rd running TD! Personally I want to see A.Green hit a long one, and get some glory. I'm worried Starks is going to fumble, but he ran hard today.

I think Burnett's first interception will be a turning point for the rest of the season. Kind of like Doug Evans against the Rams in '96. Just when things looked really dark it totally turned the game. It will propel us on to the Super Bowl just like in 1996.

Packers gutted this one out. Great, classic division victory.

-Barclay and Burnett get game balls.

-Barclay+Starks=4.4.

-Barclay+Green=4.8.

-Unheralded heros: Finley, Jones, House. Pickett too.

-I was calling for Arodge to be benched, but he eventually DID seem to stop throwing deep instead of hitting the wide open guy for a 3 yard first down/running it for a first down. On the pregame show Vic ketchman said that holding the ball for 8 seconds "was Rodgers' game." Ugh.

-Nice to see Greg back.

-I don't mind the flea flicker in and of itself. But hit the open guy underneath. Don't just hurl it deep into double coverage.

-I liked how AR12 was neutralizing the pass rush with those hard counts. Gotta keep doing that.

-The screens were good too. Starks and Green ran hard again today, and actually had the stats to show for it.

-Crosby had made an argument that he's out of the slump.

-Kuhn is not going to run 20 yards for a first down.

-Bears still suck. FIRST PLACE BABY!

-Postgame announcers are talking about how Arodge can scramble around "keeping plays alive." Is that a polite way of saying "not getting the ball out in under 8 seconds?"

-Bottom line is we pulled out a gut check victory against a division rival. Onto next week.

Dude needs to TAKE THE FIRST DOWN. Do not throw deep for a low percentage play, when you could take two steps and easily get the first down. OR drop it off to a wide open dump off for a first down.

Stop holding the ball 8 seconds, waiting for the deep pattern to come open, when you have guys coming open underneath.

Start to care more about winning the game you are playing than about surpassing Brent's records.

Oh yeah. And don't be afraid to throw a hail mary before the half once in awhile. Even though it might get picked off and muddy up your stat sheet.

My addition: Barclay plays aggressive and I feel will only improve with getting more reps in practice and having the coaches pay attention to him more closely. The fact that he's an undrafted FA made us utilize more quick passes..which I feel our offense thrives on. Hopefully we see more of it.

Packers 9-3 (8-4). Love it.

I wanted to kill Rodgers for even attempting the 3rd and short pass to Finley instead of just running for 3 and sliding for a first down in the first half. We don't need to get 20 yards per play. We have guys who are good enough at picking up YAC yards that we need to throw short/intermediate 90% of the time and take an occasional shot downfield. And I use the decisive drive in the 4th as evidence to this.

If they're going to do that stupid flea flicker, them might as well just have Cobb throw the ball downfield.

And finally, can we all please stop referring to that team in these posts as the "Vikes?" That's what Queens fans call them. We need to refer to them as ViQueens, Queens, Bi-Queens, Drag Queens, Suc-kings, etc. Thx.

At least 4...maybe 5 of those holding calls were phantom. The most blatant was the early one on T.J. that negated the 2nd Jones TD...resulting in a FG.

It's almost as if we're getting the Shaq treatment...refs call a different game against us to give the other guys a chance. OK...maybe that's overstating it, but it was really bad today.

The only bad call I noticed against MIN was the roughing call that negated the INT...though Sucheli also called Barclay for holding on the play...when he only tried to hold and whiffed.

I know I'm biased, but God they never get holding on our opponents offense. Yet they call everything on us. Kuhn's and Barclay's were very ticky-tacky calls. And I may be the only one, but the personal foul on Tramon was crap. It was still an active play and if you see it again, watch where Tramon hits him, at the letters. If his helmet grazed the receiver it was totally inconsequential. This was not the intent of the rule. The refs need to make that distinction.

+1 on poor referring across the league. The defenseless WR is way out of control. you cannot judge the angle or speed on a WR who has leaped up and is on the way down when your trying to make a play.

The lawyers and ??? Are simply ruining good hard football.

+ holding called and not, UGH.

What are the Refs or NFL trying to prove?

Lastly, I am tired of the players looking at ref, complaining then getting a late flag. C'mon. Either it's a foul at the time of play or not. Quit with the late flags.

Bring on lions. Go Pack.

They're not trying to protect players. If that were the case, they would flag offensive players (like RBs) who lead with their helmets.

The whole agenda on these calls is simply to help the offense. The NFL wants to promote scoring plays and highlight reels, so as to maximize tv viewership, even at the expense of the integrity of the game.

Goodell has bought into the "NBA Formula."

Hopefully Gooddell actually buys into the safety aspects and starts limiting ALL players that initiate contact with the helmet.

The helmet should not be used as a weapon.

It's very diferent when RBs put their heads down. The RB does it knowing the hit is coming and can prepare, and the defensive player is doing the same. The receiver usually is focused on catching the ball. He can't angle his body away from the hit and prepare. The responsibility is completely on the defensive player, and that's why the rule is fine with me.
The problem is the inconsistancy of the calls all across the league (same with holding etc.).

What gets me really fired up are those "gracing the helmet of the QB" calls which are then called as a 15 yard penalty. I agree we have to protect the QBs from illegal hits to the head, but those calls where the defensive player barely touches the helmet because he tries to swat away a pass and then comes down in the area of the QB have to stop.

Think MM went away from the game plan when Jordy left. With Greg probably still not fully back in game shape probably couldn't do much of the no huddle without Jordy and when Lang left, had no choice but to change.

All in all, I liked what I saw out of Barclay and really hope we see him at RT and Lang at LG when Lang is back assuming this wasn't a fluke.

Bush is a great special teams player, but his low football IQ drives me nuts. How can a professional football player not know if he runs out of bounds on a punt, he needs to let someone else down the ball.

Barclay gives me hope for the line. Hopefully MM understands he's better off putting Lang back at LG so they have 4 spots at full strength, instead of downgrading multiple spots playing musical lineman.
