It’s not as good as beating the Vikings. But, it is very, very close.

foundinidaho said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Man this feels good. Packer fans needed this. We’re not out of the woods by any means, but with a couple of winnable games coming up hopefully we can get a swagger going.

Dave said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

WHERE THE F HAS THAT EFFORT BEEN??? Awesome. Clay Mathews is a beast, Jones looked good, the whole D looked great. Coach looked like he might of finally realized what our offensive deficiencies are and adjusted (REFRESHING). GREAT GAME

So huuuuuuuge! One of the best victory in the last 3 seasons…
Clay Matthews and Spencer Havner are the future of this team!

afrenchpackersfan said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I am soooooooooooo damn glad the D did what I have been hoping to see

longtimefan said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Aaron, good call on Nick finishing plays…His 1st sack I thought of your post from last week

longtimefan said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Good start. Seven more to go.
—————————–
Chuckles McCarthy still makes a lot of boneheaded moves. Second challenge…what was he thinking . Third (one over the legal limit) challenge…oy vey. Pull him over and give him a field sobriety test.
—————————–
Too many penalties? We’ll clean them up. Yeah, right, maybe in the off-season.
—————————–
Did I remember to say “good start?”

Jim in DC said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

That ILB crossfire actually works when barnett is healthy and Hawk plays with a pulse

NickGBP said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Mason crosby is not allowed to attempt any more field goals from 50+ unless time is expiring at either half

denniseckersley said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Woodson is team MVP, hands down.

Jim in DC said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Why in the hell did McCarthy throw the ball after Woodson intercepted it, instead of running out the clock? He cost this team a shut out.

bigfog said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Barnett gave coach McC a gameball in the locker room. Nice footage from fox. Players were really rallying for him it seems

NickGBP said in November 15th, 2009 at 7:59 pm

I am so insanely happy right now. GO PACK GO! Will definitely wear my cheesehead hat out tonight.

Cuphound said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Barnett brought his A game today and good play by all linebackers today. I thought jones was good in his first start. It was good to see the offense use the quick pass again.

aussiepacker said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

If you are a true fan, there are no “Yeah but”s tonight. Savor it 100%. The defense was unreal. The offense did what it had to do when the chips were down. Heroes? WOOOOOOD! CM3!!!!! We had it all.

What more, we have a new standard by which the team can point to and say – “It ain’t just potential, we have the goods to play like beasts. Let’s do it.”

Thanks to Aaron for keeping the faith.

bleedsgreen said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Its not how fast you start, its how fast you finish.

This was definitely a statement game, and is the Packer media sure that the D didn’t have ” come to Jesus ” moment also prior to this game?

GO PACK GO!!!

Pack Fan In Enemy Territory said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Goddammit you were right about Kampman… For the wrong reasons, IMHO, but still… He needs to show he really want it, like how this D played tonight. They really wanted it, and they got it. Special teams also.
———-
Dallas beat themselves. That’s clear to me. But how many times did we beat ourselves? Not tonight. Not tonight.!

PackersRS said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:05 pm

How things can change in 7 days…

AdamInEngland said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Interesting how well the D played without Kampman and Popinga. I’ve been saying all year that Thompson should trade Kampman. He’s still a great player and his stock is high with the 4-3 teams. That said, the Thompson haters will crucify him for it.

Oh, and this is how long they said it would take to get the 3-4 figured out. Hopefully that’s what just happened.

Two Jet Winston said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

This was a defensive win. They played with the kind of aggressiveness that is needed for the 34 to work. It did raise the question about the OLB spot. Jones played well and made no critical errors.
_____
The offense still needs work. Blocking, stupid penalties and dropped balls are still there. The first half was dismal and really didn’t look any better than last week. Near the end of the 3rd quarter it looked like Rodgers was starting to get in his mates face after a blown play. After that things seemed to get noticably better.
_____
Keep this up for the rest of the year.

Ron La Canne said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Like Ice Cube said: “It was a good day”.

Hats off to CM3, Woodson and the D-Line for playing with desire. The Rook Brad Jones brought nice athleticism to the OLB spot, too.

The C-to-J meeting obviously touched some players this week.

The penalties frustrated me, but I know players were on edge in order to raise their games.

You can bet Mike Singletary where open up all of his cans of nostalgia to fire up a rested 49rs team.

Let’s go PACK!!!!!!

Baltimore Cheese said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

C’mon man…

Dallas lost this game, more than GB won it…But by all means, let it go to your heads…

If the players do that again..I smell a let down next week against the 49ers…

The Cowboys didn’t show up…

I wouldn’t gloat too much about it..

Pack66 said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Could Hawk be coming around? Looked like it.

ZeroTolerance said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

As MM says, I have to look at the tape, but my first impression is that the Capers finally did what I’ve been asking for: brought more pressure off the edge. Not just the inside crossover blitz. When the offense is worried about outside pressure, makes that inside blitz more effective. And as someone said above, it helps that Hawk played with a pulse.

Jersey Al said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

The Capers!

PackersRS said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Pos66,

You just can’t even stand the slightest bit of success by the Packers. Your redundant drivel is getting a bit tiresome. Why you frequent this site when its obvious you hate the Packers is beyond my comprehension.

..you must really be a joy to hang around.

Pack Fan In Enemy Territory said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

i agree- woodson team MVP!

jack said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

I can’t figure this team out. They look horrible against bad teams, then play well against Dallas, who is at the least competitive.

The D won this game – Dallas didn’t lose it.

Bearmeat said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Awww, wittle Pack66.
-
“Dallas lost this game, more than GB won it” just proves how little you know about football.
-
In closing – suck it.

Aaron Nagler said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Woodson has to retire as a Packer. Today in response to a Wood tackle my friend said “you will recognize that fast closing speed as number 21 Charles Woodson”

seekr said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Like every Packer fan, I want them to win every game, but honestly, this win was somewhat surprising. How can the Packers lose pathetically to a previous 0-7 team, and then come close to shutting out one of the best teams in the NFL right now? Obviously, consistency is still an issue for the Pack, and tonight’s performance was by no means perfect, but if the Pack keep playing like this, they are a serious wild card team this year.

The defense was almost perfect. This is the first time I’ve seen them put decent pressure on a capable team, and it showed with the, was it five , sacks we got on Romo. The Packers have got to keep that up in the next few games.

I agree with everyone who said that Woodson should be the MVP. That guy is an absolute beast. End of story. It was the defense that really won the game for the Pack today (did I really just say that?)

The offense, we were seeing some of the same old mistakes. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot with these penalties. However, we did have one of the most incompetent refs in the league. He went to the hood three times for plays that were unreviewable. The sacks are still continuing at a dangerous level, so the offense still has some problems to deal with, but a general improvement this week.

GO PACK GO

PACKERS said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

That Packer Defense that played today reminded me of the defense that started the season against Chicago. Great job guys!!!

JerseyPackFan said in November 15th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Defensive Rookie Of The Year is Clay Matthews!

JerseyPackFan said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

I argue that Woodson is as good as Reggie White. When the game was on the line, Reggie could take over a game himself and win it for us. Well guess what, Woody can do that too!
I think this Oline configuration is adequate.
My man Brad Jones, baby! Not only did he elevate the defense, but the special teams too! LOL.

nerdmann said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Pack66,
no way, man. Not a chance. You’re just wrong.

Two Jet Winston said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pm

The secondary played really well. I guess the whole defense did, but I was pleased to see Collins and Bigby flying around. More importantly, as evidenced by that lockerroom scene after the game, the players have in no way given up on the season or the coaching staff. Yeah, they have questioned strategies, as every team will when they lose (better believe Dallas is doing that tonight) but they executed really well tonight. They’re buying it. Offense still has a lot of the same problems but at least they can put up points on anyone.

Chicago Hooligan said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Aaron is on the money. You dudes who come on here with the “Dallas LOST it” garbage are on dope. IQ66, get a clue. This was a fantastic defensive effort, and finally the rest of the team did enough to make up for the deficiencies that parts of the team had (stupid head coach, penalties, special teams stupidity). Save your crap for a loss, because there will likely be more. For now, this was a great win and every Packers fan should enjoy it.

Ruppert said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Nice rebound win by the Packers today. Can’t say enough about how well the D played as a whole. The offense still has so work to do, but this was an improvement. I like Lang in there, even with his rookie mistakes. Perhaps Brad Jones needs more work at OLB and Kamp needs to beef up and be put back at DE.

Irish Cheesehead said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Thanksgiving comes early to GB!!
*
Hats off to Capers and the Defense… they looked like another team compared to the last 2 games… grabbing 2 turnovers, one in deep territory and another after a big Dallas pass are like gold nuggets (glad the recovered fumble at 10 yrd line not reviewable!). Except for last 2 mins. Romo looked like deer in headlights.
*
Now let’s hope the Grinch doesn’t return to GB and steal Christmas ! (offense still needs help – penalties, sacks, etc.,)

greenbaypackerbob said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Oh, I don’t have any more red challange flags??,… That’s OK, my defense should be well rested by now to continue!

Packnic said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Great win. Defense was stellar. One negative – can we work out some punters this week please? Amazing we overcame the field position battle all day long.

keeley2 said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Fish: I was thinking that. Win by any means necessary. I wouldn’t mind seeing McCarthy tripping an opponent player…

PackersRS said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Special teams weren’t awful. How refreshing.
———————
I was yelling at my TV when Crosby took the field for that 50-something yard FG attempt. What was MM thinking? Agh!!! How many times does he have to have those long FG attempts fail, and give the opponents great field position, before he gets it into his thick skull that it just might be smarter to punt and pin them back? Agh!!!

Jim in DC said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:28 pm

“They look horrible against bad teams” – sure, they got beat by Tampa Bay, but they’ve killed the other bad teams they’ve played.
-
Other than TB the losses are against MN, who are pretty good (for girls), and a Bengals team who beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh today.
-
Sometimes teams lose games they shouldn’t, it happens. What matters is how you respond. This is a good start.

FITZCORE1252 said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

The defense that showed up today actually looked like that “3rd-ranked defense” that McCarthy talks about in press conferences.

It reminded me of an old Tampa or Ravens Super Bowl team. The offense just had to not make mistakes and the defense dominated the game.

Of course, when you have a team with Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings, and Donald Driver, you’d like of hope they’d do a bit more than not make mistakes, but in the end, a great victory.

C.D. Angeli said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Generally good points, except for this:

kudos to McCarthy for actually changing up the playcalling after halftime and really pounding the football

Did we really pound the ball in the second half? I think for the game we were at almost a 2-1 pass/run ratio; I don’t know if you can sustain such a number if you’re pounding the ball in the second half. In fact, I kept yelling (and commenting on the gameblog) that we should be running it more.

We’ve run the ball fairly well the last two weeks. If McCarthy is really serious about cutting down on sacks, we need to do more of that.

bucky said in November 15th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

First – I’m more than happy to eat crow!
so GLAD to see the Pack DOMINATE the Cowpricks!!
Second – Where has the defense been this season?! What a smack down they put on Dallas.
Third – Still need to run more. MM did adjust in the second half but STILL relied on the passing game.
Fourth – AR is one of the toughest QBs in the league & a leader!
Fifth – I hope this is a season changer for the Pack… I hope!

mopak65 said in November 15th, 2009 at 10:13 pm

We beat a good team for the first time in two years! Damn, it feels good.

Dustybricks6 said in November 15th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

@Dusty: Not to take anything away from the great victory tonight, and it might feel like the first good victory in two years… but just to give credit where it is due, last year the Pack beat the Vikings (season record:10-4), Colts (12-4), and Bears (9-7).

bleedsgreen said in November 15th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

“•Make no mistake, this is a season dfining victory”

Make no mistake, we certainly had of moments mid-season in 2008 against Chicago and Indy. What did it define? A team with extremely volatile performances against better opponents. This win won’t be anything but parody if we don’t take care of business next week.
————–
Defensive Team? I love the sound of that. Certainly takes pressure off an offense. We have a great chance to go 7-4 heading into a half week bye before a tough game against the Ravens. Not much room for error from here on out.
—————
In the meantime, Enjoy the win. We embarrassed one of the hottest teams in football…and two of our biggest competitive (PHILI and ATL) lost today. Just got a 6-pack to celebrate.

Asshalo said in November 15th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Not to look ahead, but I’m giddy for the Ravens and Steelers games, if for no other reason than defensive games are much more fun to watch when you have a rooting interest.

packsmack said in November 15th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

MM called a game that protected time of possession and field position, instead of an offense that was looking for that big play.
You will win most of your games with field position and time of possession in your favor.

I think we are seeing the last of Kampman in a Green Bay uniform, I hate to see it, I really like the guy

Dilligaff said in November 15th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

ESPN is saying that the Cowboys didn’t win that game because they weren’t “focused”…

I tend to agree…

We’ll see next week, now..won’t we?

And the following week…

Pack66 said in November 16th, 2009 at 9:58 am

Because goodness knows – if ESPN says something…it MUST be true. (rollseyes)

Aaron Nagler said in November 16th, 2009 at 10:02 am

Well, I think Tom Jackson knows what he’s talking about…But that’s only me, I guess…

Pack66 said in November 16th, 2009 at 10:04 am

Big question is what to do with Kampman now. Brad Jones proved he could handle the OLB spot currently occupied by Kampman. Does he sit another week for his concussion? If I was Capers, I would play Jones, ALOT, vs San Fran. even if Kampman is healthy. Jones did nothing not to play next week, and Kampman has not done anything this season to warrant starting next week, other than his contract.

Cant sit him the whole game next week if he is healthy enough to play (he can be effective with his hand down), but our defense looked more fluid and aggressive with Kampman not playing.

Chitown Packfan said in November 16th, 2009 at 11:20 am

It’s only you Pack66. ;^)

The Cowboys weren’t “focused” because they were “out-of-sync” due to the performance and unpredictability of the Packers defense (for a change).

Jim in DC said in November 16th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Dude, I don’t care what you say…

That was NOT the same Cowboy team that played the Eagles the week before. This was a classic “trap” game for them. They were bad on both sides of the ball…

You’ll see, when things return to “normal” next week.

Pack66 said in November 16th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I’m glad to see I’m not the only feelin’ the love around here from certain “Packer fans”.

foundinidaho said in November 16th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Vike66 can’t stand that the Packers had any success. He likes peeing in everyone’s cornflakes.
————————————-
Very few here claim that the Packers are now world-beaters, but lets give the team credit for doing enough right this week to beat a decent team. Lets hope they can keep doing enough right to win every week.

Jim in DC said in November 16th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Cowboys allegedly not focused… alluded to several times by Fox’s Buck and Aikeman during the broadcast… in the NFL you need to FOCUS ON EVERY GAME because “on any given Sunday” shit can happen (Bengals anyone?!)! “Not focused”, is a convenient excuse to use when a team on the rise suddenly gets tripped up! Consider: Joe Buck mentioned during the game that the Packers players “aired it out” Monday after the Tampa Bay fiasco. They know how the Packer faithful feel about them and MM/TT. Plus, they are professionals and PRIDE certainly plays a role… they also knew that this game was a defining moment… Okay, either this game was a “fix”, or, a Dallas team with so much pressure to “perform” knowing the stakes were high against a team that had something to prove buckled under that pressure because they encountered a rival that said to themselves “enough is enough – damn it, we are that good!” Okay, Cowboys may have thought this was an easy win – but they got their clock cleaned and if they were so DAMN GOOD they should have overcome the Pack – THEY DIDN’T!

mopak65 said in November 16th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Clearly this is Charles Woodsons team and not Aaron Rodgers at this point…and maybe that is a “good thing”

xxstatic said in November 17th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

i agree with chitown packfan…interesting to see what to do with kampman…eithere jones’ performance will light a fire under his butt and he’ll play lights out…or…and to xxtatic i agree man, i like that shot of woodson going up to rodgers after his intercetion and shaking his hand, kind of like telling him…”here kid, dont fuck it up.” ive always ponder as to the question many critics have as to how to replace brent fack, the legend…here’s the answer: with a defensive QB in the realm of such greats like Ray lewis and others. i’m one of, if not, the biggest A-rod supporter there can be, but in reality i dont want him to go out there and win games with his own hands, god knows he aint got moxy for that yet!, but instead become a great disciplined game mananger…

alfredomartinez said in November 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Man, I’m getting tired of all the ball hugging, TT nutt-lickers who make constant pathetic “excuses” for your man-lover, Mr. 36-37…Oh what? It looks like Ted Thompson shits his pants every time free agency rolls around, (and when Brett Favre faces his pathetic team).

What you don’t say is ALL of your Lover Ted’s boys shit their pants in that Giants game, except Driver and Favre, but that fact will be lost on you because of hero worship of one man, Ted Thompson, who you will sadly defend at any cost.

You obviously don’t know **** about football, and I’m guessing your name is Dale Zawada…or one of his peg boys…
