Gut Reactions: Preseason Week One

Gut Reactions: Preseason Week One

  • Aaron Rodgers and the first string offense looked fine.
  • Everyone else needs a lot of work.
  • Seriously.
  • Ok, fine, Tyrone Walker looked pretty good.
  • Davon House, Graham Harrell and Vince Young did not.
  • It's a bit disconcerting how Bruce Arians can trot out four quarterbacks and have them all play at a competent level, having coached them for all of four months (ok, he coached Drew Stanton last year), while McCarthy has two quarterbacks he's coached for two years look like shite.
  • All that said, this all meant little to nothing. Just hope Datone Jones is ok.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment. Other than one pass from Aaron Rodgers to James Jones, I don't know what Mike McCarthy can point to as a positive.

This is not an overreaction. If you break this game down to one on one battles, the Packers got their asses kicked tonight!

Tommy G's picture

Spot on! Early preseason we can't look at the team effort; they haven't had time to grow together yet. So when we look at the one on one effort, our boys got their butts handed to them.

Tommy G's picture

Aaron, that about sums it up. First string offense looked good on their two minute drill to open the game, except they didn't score.

Run defense looked good against a team that isn't known for its running game.

Pass defense is an utter failure. No pass rush even from the first string; wide open receivers on every play.

Carson Palmer is going to lose his job to the Stanton guy.

murphy's picture

I know it's preseason week 1 and all, but wouldn't it have made sense to trot out Crosby on the 4th and goal, especially given his dismal Family Night performance? Give him a nice easy one, let him start shaking off the yips?

Or hell, let Giorgio take a "real" snap?

Mark in the montain's picture

Mason may well already be toast.

But then maybe after last night McCarthy is beginning to smoke a bit too!

Tommy G's picture

No, I don't think that would've been good. The score doesn't matter, and from what I saw they were running a simulated 'down by 5 with two minutes to go' with the starters. I would've liked to see us in a position later to let both kickers go for some 35ish yarders, but that never happened.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Well considering Capers doesn't use much for blitzing and coverages (plays it pretty base) I wouldn't fully be concerned about the pass defense.

Tommy G's picture

Not concerned? Our D had to go to 6 DB almost all night just to stem the tide of deep completions by all four of the card's QBs. Our team isn't going to get pass pressure with that many DBs trying to cover. The concern should be here right now

RC Packer Fan's picture

They don't scheme, and play very vanilla defense. If they wanted to win a preseason game, they could... Its about seeing what players can do.

i'm not worried.

Tommy G's picture

Like you, when I watch a preseason game, I'm not looking so much at the play calls. What I do watch is what our players are doing. What I learned last night is that (the guys on the field) give too much space in man, cannot cover the deep ball, and do not put pressure on the opposing QB. Offense is up in the air, as the other three QBs (if you want to call them that) were so terrible that we have no idea if the players are any good. I sure wasn't impressed by all the drops, but a poorly thrown pass is hard to catch.

BrianD's picture

Boyd, Barrington, Manning, Savage, and Daniels all showed flashes. I'll be keeping an eye on that front 7 over the next 3 preseason games.

What is shite?

Tommy G's picture

Shite? He plays third base.

jmac3444's picture

who's on first

Tundrabum's picture

Who's on BBC.

Mark in the montain's picture

Shite!

Wenis's picture

Harrell should be cut yesterday. He is nothing more than a turnover machine. Good point on the Cards QB's. I dread having to listen to the local Phoenix radio tomorrow. they will be blowing their horns for sure.

BrianD's picture

It helps their cause when the Packers DBs are a step slow all night, and receivers down the middle of the field were WIDE open, with the exception being one impressive coverage sack.

copakerfan's picture

Please - none of the back ups played worth a shit. BJ should be cut - I dont know who he was even throwing the ball to. The second string line seems worse than last year and there were way too many dropped passes.

Evan's picture

No major injuries and Bakhtiari played well. That's what I'm focusing on.

Big fog's picture

Waiting for word on Datone Jones. Sprained ankle, but will know more tomorrow. Color me concerned.

Evan's picture

Sprained ankles can linger. But he didn't look overly concerned on the sidelines.

RC Packer Fan's picture

I agree Evan.

Tommy G's picture

Yes!

jmac3444's picture

The back up corners are pretty bad. House's performance was especially disappointing. These back up qbs are abysmal. Young's struggles were somewhat understandable as he has only been here 4 days but Harrell and Coleman looked awful although to be fair coleman didn't play much

jmac3444's picture

also thought Jolly looked pretty decent even if he has to learn how to tackle

Tommy G's picture

...learn to tackle again. Still, I think he looked good at his position.

Bearmeat's picture

I think the 1st string D did ok too. CM3 and Raji got pulled almost as fast as ARod did. Perry and Burnett lasted 2 series past Rodgers.

And we're still missing Heyward and Tramon. We'll be fine. Really. Not the end of the world.

Bakhtiari looked ok - considering the vanilla rushing schemes he saw.

Newhouse and Harell.. time to go bye bye.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Overall I agree. Just one question. You get rid of Newhouse. Who do you got?

You have to remember he is learning a new position as well..

Bearmeat's picture

True.

But polishing a turd doesn't change the fact that you're still touching a turd.

Newhouse is a backup in the NFL. We know this.

I'm rooting for Sherrod to get healthy and Barclay behind him.

And a FA (anyone really) vet at C.

Evan's picture

Ideally, to me, the starting line would be Bak-Sitton-EDS-Lang-Barclay. Then on gameday Newhouse would back up the tackles and Van Roten would be the backup C/G.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Lol, I love the polishing a turd. So true...
But you still have to look at the end of the day though right now, we just don't have anyone else that can really be the starter. Barclay last year I liked him but it is a bit deceiving because he was protected a lot.

I think Newhouse is a perfect backup OT. I thought for sure he was going to be the 6th man this year, but then Bulaga got hurt.

Right now I think Newhouse will still be the starter. I only really remember the 1 sack he gave up, which that was against John Abraham, (very good player).
I don't remember him having any other bad plays, but I didn't watch him exclusively either.

I agree with you Evan, that Newhouse would be the perfect backup and GVR would be the best option for G/C. I just am not sure Barclay will win the starting spot.

Bearmeat's picture

Let me clarify:

I want a FA backup center. Unless it is proven that GVR can do the job.

I am less worried about Barclay at RT than I am about Newhouse.

I am hoping (like everyone else) that Sherrod is activated and can play over both of them.

California Cheesehead's picture

Didn't he start out as RT?

California Cheesehead's picture

Newhouse, I mean.

Tundrabum's picture

My gut reactions requiured Rolaids, but that's more concerning the 20% of our roster that didn't dress for the game due to injuries.

Tommy G's picture

I think it was a concern about exasperating those injuries. We will see some of them next week, most of them against seattle.

Mojo's picture

Thought that the ARod offense looked good. Bakh was good enough. Also the run defense played well throughout. Else.... well we didn't have to see Crosby shank a few.

calipackfan's picture

Capers sucks monkey nuts

Bearmeat's picture

Your insight is profound. Tell me, how do you know Capers "sucks monkey nuts" after 1 PREseason game again?

Mark in the montain's picture

Part of the overall shite!

Remember no starters at CB last night.

When Mike goes, Dom goes. At this rate maybe around week 5.

Theme: We (publicly owned Packer corporation) pay a man $4 Mil plus/yr to manage a football team that looks totally lost. Not positive!

Bearmeat's picture

You need to take a Xanax.

It's the preseason. It'll be fine. On O and D.

Mark in the montain's picture

Seems to me we started like this last year, played a bit better in the middle, then got embarased by SF. No deja vue. No mas!

Tommy G's picture

Fine enough to make it to the post-season, only to be blown out (again) by SF or NY??? Probably. This D needed help, and so far it doesn't look like they got any in the off-season.

Zaphod Beeblebrox's picture

Davon "Burning Down The" House...

dawg's picture

WOW,

unbelievable.

BrianD's picture

Alex Green looked well below average for an NFL running back. I liked what Tom said at his jsonline blog, Alex is choosing which holes to hit too quickly. He picked up right where his 2012 season (3.4 yards per carry) left off, even taking into consideration he was running behind an oline of backups.

PadLevel's picture

Yup, this was pretty much the downfall of Ryan Grant too. Not being patient, not allowing the OL to step into their blocks and move the D linemen.

RC Packer Fan's picture

My gut reactions from the game and having about an hour to think about it.

Bakhtiari looked good, although I didn't key on him the whole time.

I like what I see from Franklin. I think once they figure out ways to get him the ball in space he will be pretty good.

Tyrone Walker really looks like he has a chance.

The backup QB's. ummm, yeah. I will give Young an excuse cuz he has been here for 4 days. But Harrell looks horrible and Coleman really proved why they brought in Young.
I am already predicting that Thompson will be drafting a QB within the first 5 rounds of the draft next year.

Overall though, i'm not concerned. The only thing i'm really concerned about is Datone Jones' injury. Hopefully it isn't to serious.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Also. Sam Barrington stood out to me a bit. Looking forward to seeing him moving forward.

And are they trying to hide Pease? They didn't seem to want to use him a lot, and when they did, it was a lot of pass plays.

PadLevel's picture

Thought Banjo played well, given the short time he had to prepare for this game. Hope they give him more opportunities in the next preseason game. He reminds me of former Bears safety Mike Brown - who when healthy was one of the meanest Safeties I have ever seen.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Yeah, I agree, he did flash to me too. I kind of forgot about him. but he did flash. I am going to keep my eye on him as well.

Idiot Fan's picture

I thought Savage had some moments. At one point I thought he was the ghost of KGB tearing around the edge.

RC Packer Fan's picture

yeah, I thought he had a few moments as well.

Fish . Crane's picture

Crosby looked better

Bearmeat's picture

lol

Fish . Crane's picture

Coach you can't turn every cow ear into a silk purse. No disgrace there. What would be troublesome is a failure to admit it.

Evan's picture

Also, I liked Hyde's tackling.

RC Packer Fan's picture

I agree. Hyde is very physical. I can see why some teams considered him a safety. I think he was the best tackler tonight. A lot of missed tackles tonight by other players. Hyde looked good though.

al's picture

the room they gave wr was really the most disappointment for me ya cant give 15 yard coushion every play and think you can cover just plain allfull :(

Tommy G's picture

I agree, but what I don't know is where is the problem. Somebody is teaching and telling our DBs to do this, and that somebody is wrong.

That being said, the few times I saw a a straight zone defense they looked a little better.

hayward4president's picture

I am still only in the first quarter so I did not read all of your comments cause I didnt wanna spoil it. So forgive me if this has been mentioned a lot already..but oh my god House is suckingggggg!

Tommy G's picture

yes. House needs a lot of work from the coaches; unless it was the coaches that taught him to play that far off of people.

Mark in the montain's picture

Aaron,

Some of the best shite you ever writ!

When can we fire MM (not the Murphy one)?

zeke's picture

Probably next week, if they lose. And then maybe they can hire Rod Marinelli as the new coach. Who can forget the masterful job he did in guiding the Lions to an undefeated preseason in 2008? (Some might argue that Jim Schwartz outdid him in 2011 with another undefeated preseason, but the Lions' margin of victory in 2011 doesn't match 2008. Numbers don't lie).

The TKstinator's picture

I think we need to react faster.
If an offense doesn't score a touchdown on its first play from scrimmage, the coach and GM should immediately be fired. All the players on offense should be cut and forced to leave the stadium without a shower. Then we can replace the coach and GM with two of us because we are obviously SO MUCH SMARTER than they are, and unlike them, WE TAKE OUR FOOTBALL SERIOUSLY.
The players can be replaced with street free agents who are not only much more talented, but also show the proper attitude and intensity.

Lucky953's picture

I think some guys forget to sober up before commenting--thus the excessive negativity

Idiot Fan's picture

Seriously, it's been, like, almost three years since this guy won us a Super Bowl.

Cow42's picture

Disappointed in House big time.

I was hoping that he'd be starting material so that we wouldn't have to Rely on T. Williams.

Ends up he's WORSE than Williams.

lebowski's picture

that's my biggest disappointment as well. all bluster, no backing it up.

The TKstinator's picture

They should BOTH not only be cut immediately, but exiled to Siberia.
After one preseason game it is COMPLETELY OBVIOUS that House is absolutely terrible. Don't need to see any more from him. He is ridiculously bad.
Oh sure, SOME FANS might say that yes, he had a bad game, no doubt about it, but the TRULY ENLIGHTENED FANS (like you and me) deal only in absolutes, black and white, hall of famers or outright busts. There is no such thing as "just a guy" in today's NFL; there are either All-Pros or bums.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to get back to grading the film.

zeke's picture

Siberia? To each his own, but I have too much respect for Siberia to send them there. The Siberians have suffered enough. You're a monster.

Cow42's picture

There's the difference...

You are ok with the fact that House is "just a guy".
I was hoping he would be more than that.

calf21's picture

We watch the same game.
I say House had a bad game.
You conclude that he is "worse than Williams."

Is it even remotely possible that he had a bad game and STILL could be more than "just a guy"? Or is it already too late?

It's out of character for you to be so pessimistic.

Al's picture

So if the defense does not step it up this year and underperform's again does Capers Take any blame? Just saying if you continue to draft new players And nothing changes year-to-year doesn't that point to a problem higher up?

Tommy G's picture

I still say, no. His schemes are awesome, but the players, for the past couple of years, are not executing the plays. Now we could say that he is then to blame because he doesn't simplify or adjust to his players. That would be true if the players were good at some other scheme, but they're not.

Cow42's picture

As much as I want to be upset with Capers, I just can't.
Dude's got exactly 1 playmaker on the whole defense.

Not enough.

4thand1's picture

After reading the comments, I'm sure glad there is no GM material on here. Make the playoffs and you have a chance. In the salary cap era the Packers have done a fantastic job. How have all the high priced free agents worked out for, "da Bears?"

The TKstinator's picture

There's the difference:
We watch the same game, and I say House had a bad game while you conclude that he is "worse than Williams".

Is it possible that he could come back from this and STILL be more than "just a guy"? Or is it already too late?

It's not like you to be so pessimistic.

al's picture

last year cards started out 4 and 0 they still good team so im not worried yet !!!!!
