Gut Reactions: Preseason Week 2

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers' pre-season victory over the St. Louis Rams.

  • Do not worry about the fact that they haven't put the ball in the endzone. The first string offense is in mid-season form.
  • Eddie Lacy is going to be one hell of a closer. Teams are going to deal with the Packers' no-huddle offense all game - and then they'll have to deal with Lacy trucking them in the 4th quarter. Guy just does not go backward on contact.
  • Great to see Finley involved in the offense early and often.
  • Aaron Rodgers looks in absolute complete control.
  • The sack given up by Bakhtiari was a great teaching moment. The rookie didn't move his feet and paid the price. That said, one NFL player told me Robert Quinn is nearly unblockable one-on-one on that surface, so it's not like Bakhtiari lost that play to a chump.
  • I think Johnny Jolly made the team tonight. Between the batted ball and the interception, the guy is just an athlete who can make things happen. He has limitations when it comes to rushing the passer, but he can still play.
  • Despite the big play he gave up to Chris Givens (who knows if he was supposed to have safety help) Micah Hyde played a hell of a game. Really like how physical he is.
  • The lack of any pass rush from anyone other than Clay Matthews when the starters are on the field is still a tad worrisome.
  • I thought Mike Neal played well standing up - except when he was asked to drop into coverage. That was ugly.
  • Mike Daniels had a really nice play down by the goalline where he stuffed his guy to the point that the back couldn't get out of the backfield. I like how active Daniels is, though I wish he flashed a bit more on passing downs.
  • Graham Harrell played pretty well.
  • Vince Young looked ok.
  • BJ Coleman made one really nice play on the touchdown. Despite that, I just don't think he's very good.
  • Looking forward to the game against the Seahawks, who as I type this are completely handling the Broncos. Should be a good measuring stick.
  • Go Pack Go.

The offense is fine. Don't worry about it.

The defense still can't generate pass pressure, and still can't cover deep throws.

Both kickers are unreliable.

This idea that "the defense STILL can't generate pass pressure" is a complete and utter misconception.

The Packers ranked 4th in the league in sacks during the 2012 regular season..

True that. Sacks typically involve a certain amount of coverage and without Williams and Hayward the coverage isn't quite good enough.

I have total confidence that the Packer pass rush will be more than adequate this year.

If he is the Packers D could be dominant. If he struggles adjusting to the NFL and is average, the Packers D will be really good but not dominant. We need that guy like Jenkins was to push the D to dominant again... That and Jolly giving the D an attitude adjustment could really make the Packers a SB favorite.

I don't think the special teams of the Packers will ever learn to stop turning there backs to the ball when punting. Time and time again these b@@bs turn the ball over having no idea wtf they are doing. No pass rush = BAD but other than that they played pretty well. Like that Micah Hyde.

You're absolutely right about Jolly. He's a lot like he was in 2009. Bats balls, plays run well, not a very good pass rusher. The pass defense gave up 5 plays of 20 yards or more, that's worrisome too. Really hope Hayward, Williams, Cobb, and everybody else starts to practice again and hopefully be ready for week one.

Pass rushing was never Jolly strength. Its his run D and physical attitude that'll help the Packers most. Say good bye to Wilson... Jolly just made him expendable. Same player, but run stuffers, except Jolly is better in many ways. More physical, bats balls down, raises the Physicality of the entire D.

Agree with that and once Cobb and Nelson are back it's going to be fun. We saw what happened when Rodgers had even a hint of a run game in the Playoffs of 2010. While Lacy is a whole different threat than Starks ever was, defenses are still going to be forced to respect it. Corners bite, even for a second and Cobb is gone with a quick hitter through the middle.

Lacy looked great. Bakh did well except on that play. Finley looked good. Good stuff from Jolly.

He seemed to move pretty well after he caught the punt tonight.

It came out a few days ago that McCarthy said he caught the ball so well he was thinking about using him on offense. I like that and I can see him becoming the PR.

Also if he becomes the main PR. That really reduces the chances that Ross makes the roster.

Unlike last week, tonight the Packers were ready to play and McCarthy deserves some credit. I agree with your observations regarding the lack of defensive pressure by the first unit. However, it's really hard to determine the performance of this group with Datone Jones, Tramon Williams, and Casey Hayward out. Although it's a little discouraging to see Micah Hyde make more plays than Nick Perry. On the whole, though, a good effort by the entire team.

Agreed, but could someone tell me why they still throw all these deep balls on 3rd and 1 still. At least at the end of the game it seemed to be the case. It seems every team expects that now and safety always in position, something Packers safety's should learn. 5 pass plays of 20 yards or more is discouraging but it is week two of preseason.

For heaven's sake when are we going to understand that these games are about evaluation? You can't apply regular season mentality here.
For example, maybe Dom wouldn't put a young corner in mam to man with no safety help on third and long when the games count, but THIS is the time try that and see how the kid fares.
That's just ONE example, but take that IDEA and apply it all over the place and THEN you'll understand the preseason.

Finley looked outstanding. Tempting me once again to take him earlier than I probably should in fantasy.

Might as well have BJ be the back up. At least he has NFL talent. We would win maybe four games is Harrell was our starter. I still think BJ will be a good qb by next season. He has the tools.

I know a lot of experts did not like the Hyde pick. He's playing well enough that I don't think they'll be able to keep him off the field during the regular season for long. He has a real chance of playing the Woodson role on this team. Great blitzer, sure tackler, and seems to know his assignments.

Big improvement by Young tonight, playing within the offensive scheme. Went through his progressions rather than looking for daylight. Made a really nice throw on what could have been a TD with an experienced receiver.
Coleman lacks a cool head.
Poor interior pass rush push by #1 D.
Boykin's made it.
I'll take Bostic over DJ Williams.
Dezman Moses had some bad looking plays. Mulumba looks more like a playmaker, though green.
With his miss tonight, Tavecchio put the job in Crosby's lap.
Johnny Jolly amazes me.

Yong has his limitations, but he's been a winner on every level he's played on, including the NFL. He isn't the prototype Packers QB, but if he can manage to win a few, which he usually finds a way to do, I would use him at backup QB and tweak the offense to fit his style of play. Much rather have him than Harrell. Hope Coleman can make some strides in the next year on the PS.

Young had a TD on that play. The WR had his 2 feet down before he went out of bounds. Had control of the ball. Was a TD. If they would have reviewed it, they would have ruled it a TD.

Players that stood out to me in some sort of way, tonight...

Eddie Lacy - WOW... Packers haven't had a RB like him in I don't know how long.

Johnny Jolly - looked like his old self. His ability to tip passes at the line of scrimmage is something that the d-line has lacked while he has been gone.

Jermichael Finley - He looks like he is determined, and matured. After making big plays I didn't see him messing around. I expect big things from him this year.

Micah Hyde - Minus the long pass he gave up, which he made a huge point saving tackle, Hyde really played well. He looks like he can become an effective blitzer. I really like what I see with Hyde.

Jarrett Boykin - He will be a very good 4th WR this year. He just seems to make plays when needed.

Andy Mulumba - He flashed to me tonight. I think he will win a roster spot.
Also Nate Palmer for the first time that I have seen made some plays as well.

Backup QB's - Harrell is a 'game manager' I guess? He doesn't do anything impressive, but looks like he might be able to 'manage' a game.
Young, I thought looked better this week then last week. He had a TD, that wasn't called a TD, which was a perfect throw.
Coleman looked a lot better this week then anytime before. He has a hell of a arm. For him its all mental.

Brandon Bostick - I believe he made the 53 man roster.

Josh Boyd - Looks good to me as well. Before I thought that it was going to come down to him and Jolly but right now, I'm kind of wondering if it will be between him and CJ Wilson.

Sam Barrington - to me looks like he belongs.

Its not just making tacklers miss. But running thru tackles and not just arm tackles. Lacy, like Ahman will run thru tackles and then keep moving and punish they guys that do make the tackle. That wears a D down, helps bring the safeties closer to the LOS and will open up the play action that we were missing last year.

I thought the pass-rush was generally better than most posters are giving credit. Seemed to me their was consistent breakdowns in the Rams pocket even though we didn't always get home, especially by the second and third teamers.

Bakh played pretty well for his first dome-turf test. He is really active moving his feet and positioning himself in front of the defender. Don't know how he'll stack up against bull-rushers since he doesn't carry a lot of weight. The run blocking was pretty mediocre, but Lacy wasn't. Need to keep that guy healthy cause he shook some people off to get extra yards. What a difference maker he could be.

Thought the second and third stringers acquitted themselves much better compared to last week.

Its hard to judge a pass rush in the preseason. They don't stunt or anything, its all about trying out new pass rush moves and guys aren't showing the entire repertoire. In the regular season when the DL and LB are working together and setting up their moves it'll be a lot different. The 34 D is a lot about disguising who's rushing and that doesn't happen in the preseason.

Seeing as though Rodgers has looked very sharp thus far, and it's likely that Cobb and Nelson won't play again next week, I'd kind of like to see McCarthy rest ARod completely next week against the Seahawks.

I think Carrol is a slimeball and that defense would try to hurt Aaron if given the opportunity. I'd be a lot more comfortable seeing how Bakhtiari stacks up against a good-to-great pass rush without the potential of Aaron getting hit. Plus it would give Young more snaps.

I'm curious what you saw so bad in D.J. Williams play? The pass down the middle by Harrell? I don't think any of the Packers TE's catch that. The coverage was tight, maybe I'm wrong but I didn't think he stunk up the joint. Tory Holt made a comment that he needed to catch that ball but Holt wouldn't shut up about ANYTHING! He felt that the RB's for St. Louis were doing a good Job running the ball for Christs sake. He did catch a couple balls and was effective blocking on a couple of Lacys longer runs. I'm not ready to give up on Williams even though he seems to be the popular choice to be cut. I have a feeling if he was cut by Green Bay he'd turn around a catch 60 balls for New England.

I just hope McCarthy stays with the no-huddle offense once the regular season starts. I think Micah Hyde may be pushing Casey Heyward for the starting LCB position. He's already much more physical than Tramon Williams who better get out of the tub if he wants to make the club. I think the Packer brass is ridding itself of perennially injured players. Take note Tramon your days may be numbered!!!

Hyde is perfect as the Slot CB opposite Hayward. Williams and Shields will be the starters and Hayward in the slot. When the Packers go nickel, it'll be between Hyde, House and possibly McMillan depending on who wins (likely Hyde at this point) or they play whoevers skills fit the play call best.

The deep pass given up by Hyde is a perfect example why Hyde needs to stay in the slot. His lack of speed was the reason that play was completed. Most of the other CB's would have been able to get the extra step needed to knock that pass away. Hyde doesn't have the make up speed outside, but much like Hayward he has really good quickness which will make him great in the slot.

That deep pass I agree showed Hyde's lack of speed, however, was he supposed to have safety help on that play? I have heard a number of people saying it looked like he was supposed to have help.
I love his tackling ability. And even though he got burned on that play, his tackle ended up saving points, because they didn't score and turned the ball over.
Another thing that Hyde showed was an ability to get to the QB on blitzes. He had 1 sack and hit the QB on another blitz that I saw.

Yeah he was supposed to have some help, but he still got beat and couldn't get to the ball. Another step gained over that 50 yds would have allowed him to knock the ball away. That's always going to be an issue w/ Hyde and Hayward. But both are really good tacklers and play w/ good physicality near the LOS. The article on Shields on PackersNews.com says exactly the same thing. Its not just me making it up.

Your right about a faster corner perhaps being in position to knock the ball away but McMillan was no where in sight with the help that was supposed to be there. At least Hyde can tackle, something he seems better at than any Packers corner playing Saturday. That part of his game is refreshing.

Like I said... Hyde was supposed to have help, but he still got beat. No 2 ways about it.

He was, McMillan was trailing by 10 or 15 yards.
