Gut Reactions: Packers put together best performance of season in Detroit

Jordan Love arrives with a lights out performance on the national stage.

  • THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!
  • It's been a long time since the Packers looked so well coached in all three phases.
  • Jordan Love answering a lot of questions the last four games. Today, he was 22 of 32 for 268 yards and three touchdowns with a rating of 125.5 on the road against the division leader.
  • He was outstanding today.
  • Props to Joe Barry. That's a real young, rag-tag group in the secondary but he made it work.
  • Of course it helps when Rashan Gary and the guys up front are able to wreck shop consistently.
  • The Packers defense finally took the ball away.
  • Have a game Christian Watson.
  • Karl Brooks is a madman.
  • Outstanding work up front from the offensive line today, especially considering the environment.
  • Rich Bissacia's group was great today. Outside of a few disappointing kicks from Carlson, special teams was pretty special in Detroit.
  • One major component of that victory was the punting unit giving the Lions long fields to overcome.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, that's called complimentary football.
  • They need to stop running short yardage plays. Just run whatever you'd run on, say, 2nd and 8. Short yardage is just a disaster for this team.
  • Shout out to Malik Heath. He's such a spark of energy and he contributed some significant catches throughout the game.
  • Parrick Taylor took a dudes soul in pass protection.
  • I loved the design on the touchdown to Kraft.
  • Shout out to Matt LaFleur. That's a signature win.
  • The big run by Jordan had me feeling like a kid. That was so much fun.
  • Can't wait to be in Green Bay next week.
  • Happy Thanksgiving to Packers fans everywhere!
  • Go Pack Go.

No question the best game played all season considering the opposition.

Jordan Love is both improving every game and fun to cheer for.

Monster game from Rashan Gary.

Love to see the young players getting playing time, and truth be told would like to see more of it going forward.

Finally, where was this aggressive, Joe Barry defense during the first 1/2 of the season?

I got nothing to add. You can find a few negatives sprinkled in this game. I'm not going to focus on them. This was a big win. And i'm proud of these guys. Very pleased seeing the offense start to make strides. Go Pack Go. Hey Dan Campbell...who's ya daddy!

I personally believe Dan Campbell is a big oaaf and overrated. It’s his coaching staff who are creating the successes.
Today it was the Packers biting knee caps.

MLF is having a great play call or two lately, but have to give shoutout to player execution.  Love still under throwing, but we saw receivers, particularly Watson, make necessary adjustments today.  How great would have it been to see that last deep ball to Watson off Love's backfoot (channel Favre / Rodgers) connect to salt it away?!?

Won't take away from the W, let's enjoy it, but at the same time, let's have perspective Lions also gave us a lot of help beating themselves. Ten days till we host Goliath (KC).

I believe this game was totally different one than game vs Chargers. In the last week game there was so many dropped passes from Chargers receivers, today we did not see that. Packers D came to the game and showed what they can do when they want. Lions has one of the top 5 OL lines in the league and Goff did not have much time to go through the progression, and often his first read was already when he is under the pressure.

All congrats to Rashan and Karl (Brooks). They wer egame wrecker on Packers D. With good game from Kenny and Preston - there is no question that this D line can be very dominant in the future.

Owens played more than well and Packers "back up" CB was good, considering that they did not give a lot of long plays and was good at tackling.

I believe that some cheers should go to OL. When you take in consideration that the only two penalties from OL came from the hands of Elgton - the best Packers OL player - I said everything how good they were.

Tucker Kraft finally get his 1st TD (officialy first!) in NFL. Lot to come in the future...

MPF,

yup! This is time to be enjoying this team rising to what we KNEW they could be going into TC, analyzing the progress so far and what can be improved ...

Looking ahead to the rest of the schedule, IF they can keep playing like this there are only 2 games they might lose, KC and Viqueens who are surprisingly good. Win that one and we should have a winning record in the division, assuming the final game is a W.

Against KC I'm hoping for a 60 minute effort from everyone, and can live with whatever comes out of that. I keep saying this, but 100% effort from every player on every down all season long creates both a culture and a team identity that will contribute to a winning team for at least a decade to come. That's far more than some nebulous "moral victory." I think we can say this team is far closer to that goal than it was last season, although the second Vikings game either hit that mark or was very close to it. KC will require some serious mental toughness ...

I'm not impressed with JB like some are cutting him slack, he just put 3 down linemen in instead of 2. Our pass rush was individual effort, and JB can't do much to screw that up. Preston Smith doesn't have the sexy stats, but he's consistently playing GREAT! Johnathan Owens is the most improved player I think. Rashan Gary is superman!

Hopefully Devonte Wyatt is ok, and we start getting some injured players back. Reed not being out due to injury may have been the game changer.

It was a pretty dominant win--more than the score indicated. I was fine with that last Lions TD because they dinked and dunked their way down the field and burned up most of the clock and one time-out, so they needed to recover an onside kick to have any hope of winning the game. That last drive was a situation where the prevent defense really was the correct defense to play. A quick TD by the Lions would've been a killer in that situation.

I wasn't happy about that last Lion's TD drive. 2 first downs were due to playing soft with our CBs yards away from their receivers. I'd rather have an offense or defense that can put the game away. I hate Barry's soft zones. They all too often end up with scores for the other team and gives a chance (in this case, a slim one) to win.

The Lions have one of the best offenses in the league. Playing tight on those WRs with a bunch of backup DBs would've been very risky. Making them burn up most of the clock and one of their timeouts on a TD drive was a win for our defense. I will take that outcome any day of the week. That drive ended up looking like garbage time instead of a real comeback attempt.

Last week the Lions got two late TDs to beat the Bears, and the first one was scored quickly. The Packers were not going to let that happen to them.

Gman,

I'm with ya on the offense. MLF got away from what was working with 12 minutes left, that's giving any opponent WAY too much opportunity. But JB's soft and prevent defense on the last drive (or two) is good strategy considering the lead.

That CANNOT be the only tool in the toolbox, it's unacceptable.

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody.

Jordan Love was outstanding today. He was making his reads, going through his progressions, and hitting his back foot and letting it rip. Don't look now but Love is finally over a 60% completion rate and has 19 TD passes.

I've been SUPER critical of MLF but his decision to finally receive the ball to start the game and setting the tone for once was exactly what this team needed.

I LOVED the call for the keeper around the left side in the 4th quarter...The 2 pt. conversion call not so much.

The O-Line pass blocked really, REALLY well today.

Johnathon Owens and Gary balled out today. Actually I thought the defense played pretty well overall considering everybody they were missing.

Since we won, it may be a good time to say that I hate this trendiness of going for 2-point conversions in the third quarter.
Generally speaking, wait until the last two minutes of the game for 2-point conversions.
***
Along similar lines, the Lions passed on two field goals in the second half and ended up with no points; plus, by failing on the fake punt, they put the Packers in field position to score six points (which would have been seven if we hadn't stupidly gone for the 2-point conversion).
Although it should be strongly noted that the Packers outplayed the Lions today, it still can be true that just maybe the Lions made it easier by outsmarting themselves.
They key to coaching -- and most things in life -- is not being always aggressive or always passive. The challenge is to pick when to go for it and when to hold back.
Let's hope LaFleur and Barry are getting the hang of it.

I liked the two-point attempt in that situation because it would've made it a three-score game (17-point lead). That potential reward was worth the risk in my opinion. The difference between a 16-point lead and a 15-point lead is significant, but the difference between a 17-point lead and a 15-point lead is huge at that point in the game.

All due respect GregC, but I disagree. To me, that was an unforced error . Just like not taking the field goal earlier. When you are ahead, just keep putting points an the board. The odds favored the extra point in spite of Anders miss earlier.

That being said, Matt Lafleur coached a hell of a game today. Maybe we can give him a break for one week ; )

Whenever Carlson misses an extra point, we're all dreading whether that one point will come back to haunt us -- as it did in the loss to the Steelers, forcing us to go for a touchdown late instead of a tying field goal.
In much the same way, the decision by LaFleur to go for the 2-point conversion in the third quarter could have come back to bite us.
If we kick the extra point for a 16-point lead, then the Lions need two TDs plus two 2-point conversions. That's a tough task.
***
Anyway, too much can happen late in a game as far as both teams scoring to throw away even one extra point -- especially when the Packers are so iffy in general as far as converting on must-have short yardage plays.
For the most part, save the 2-point conversion for the final two minutes of the game.

Swisch -

"Packers are so iffy in general as far as converting on must-have short yardage plays."

THIS!

It is no time to cut MLF slack, that HAS to get fixed. I'll never believe this is a JL10 accuracy issue. He's also thrown with touch. I'm inclined to think the error on his part is mental, sorta like a WR who takes off before fully catching the ball. Whatever it is this needs to be priority #1, and Kraft and Dillon can both be excellent weapons for short yardage situations.

Interesting discussion and mostly agreed with, Swisch. In the coaching chess match, Matt was definitely more aggressive than usual; while Dan Campbell was his usual aggressive self - to a fault. We were flat coming out the 2nd half, and you knew Campbell was going to be MORE aggressive especially challenging his D. I think we could have taken advantage more of their blitzes. But, give the Packers credit for matching the intensity after the 1st series of 2nd half plays.

On another note, Jordan was 11 of 12 over the middle of the field today with a TD. If the Packers can consistently hit these plays, we will loosen the aggressiveness and cheating of opponents DBs and LBs. Absolutely, fantastic way to spend the day today!! Go Pack!

Swisch,

with two exceptions, and regardless of kicker, I want to see going for 2 ALL THE TIME, except:

1) when 1 point really makes a difference to the outcome, and;

2) when momentum just isn't there to think we'd have any chance.

Why?

Otherwise when you really need 2 you can't do it because you never do. Witness today's attempt by a team that rarely tries it.

Also, miss half of them and there's no consequence.

NP, when you consider all the wrong routes and missed catches that other QB’s don’t have to deal with, Love stats would be right up there in the top 10. Also, a few of his INT’s were at the end of the game trying to make a comeback or last second throws.

Best game in the past2 years, progress in evidence. The receivers didn’t have much in the way of drops. Not many costly penalties stalling drives. Didn’t like eschewing the FG in the first half, but it didn’t come back to bite them as in most games. No injuries as I recall. Good effort all around.

Defense won the LOS today. Love was solid. Overall excellent game from a severely wounded Packers team. MLF should have gone for the dagger FG after Love’s long run late in the 4th but it worked out in the end.

Great pass rush and big plays from the defense throughout the game especially the first half. I thought Dillon was a key to the game as well. Watson with a huge first half.

All around excellent team effort and a very pleasant surprise win against a nemesis.

I’d rather the Packers would win, or come close to winning. The front office would have a lot better idea of how to effectively improve the team instead of embarking on an annual full rebuild like the Lions used to do.

I've been waiting and hoping for Jordan Love to show us something "special." He did that today with some beautiful throws that showed impressive arm strength. Like many Packer fans I had my doubts about Davante Adams and Rashan Gary early in their careers and was thrilled to be proven wrong. Hope lightning strikes again with Love.

It wasn't just Love who impressed today. The list is long and includes members of the offense, defense, special teams, and coaching staff. Who are these imposters and what have they done with that sorry Green Bay Packer team we almost buried a few weeks ago?

Dare I even suggest that the playoffs are still a long shot but not impossible??

I guess River Dinghy Dan has never heard the phrase “never chase your losses”.

More beef in the middle of the D line and suddenly the opponents run game isn’t as easy.

Packers O-line deserves a game ball.

Love is increasingly understanding the need for my guy or no guy.

I loved that shovel pass dump off to Dillon to save a play - great improv - Dillon had another great game.

Packers secondary is punching way above their experience level.

Engabare and Wooden contributed well.

Watson is becoming lethal on those slant routes where he can watch the play unfold. Doubs is the more reliable deep ball target (for now).

Heath contributed well, so did Kraft.

In terms of reliability, I hope we get Wicks back. Kraft can step up quite a bit more, I think. Not mad he wasn't given more touches, didn't need him.

Owens is the most improved player in this game, IMHO. THESE are the Packers I was hoping to see based on TC!

Owens is still an enigma to me - some great plays mixed with some exposures.

I think that he actually fills that hybrid SS\Backer role that they hoped Oren Burks would become.

The thing that I loved most about this game was that it was won with planning and execution on both sides of the ball - and without the opponent self-destructing (like last week).

I'm also loving seeing a team playing like their livelihood depends on it....... because it does!

Next week for me will be the real examination of the secondary. If they don't get torched by Mahomes and Reid, then I'll be close to saying "well done Gute, you've really dumpster dove gems again".

I have zero argument about drafting Valentine and Anthony Johnson. Both should have gone higher in the draft.
Some of the Primetime Players best show for the K.C. Game, or they could be moved. The heavy fronts and Okie defense worked most of the day. The LBs have to fill harder.

Minniman, I agree that Owens is ideal for that combo S / LB role that Tariq Carpenter turned down.

Some here immediately labeled him as "not good" or can't play, but he had a good response to that yesterday!

Tangentially related, when Tyler Davis went down for the season I assumed that meant the FB role went with it. #28; would Excel there; have they used him like it? Also, #44 Pearson is back and should get at least a few reps like that.

I don't think our DBs can keep up with KC. I'm prepared for it to be very difficult to evaluate any progress in that game, but I was against the Lions too so maybe they at least play well? (The whole team)

Love is patient.
***
What a treat to see our still young, already maligned-as-mediocre quarterback lead the Packers in a hostile environment against a top team by standing tall in the pocked with impressive poise, pinpoint precision, and even some improv adaptability.
***
Not only the best game ever for Love, but maybe for coaches LaFleur and Barry, too.
Few penalties amidst all of the noise, and mostly good execution.
Tough blocking and tackling.
***
After what appeared to be a big mistake by Dillon in going the wrong way on 4th-and-short, he comes back to rumble on a running play for maybe 18 yards.
After Doubs dropped an easy catch to miss out on a first down conversion, he came back with a nice grab across the middle for maybe 18 yards.
In general, good resiliency by our guys.
***
When Jonathan Owens made that big hit to stop a runner, I thought to myself, there's a guy who loves to play football.
Who doesn't want to play football on Thanksgiving, or any fall day? I want to play football today, but my wife can't run, and my dog can't catch.
***
I'm thankful that we as fans of the Green Bay Packers get to enjoy this wonderful holiday as both fat and happy.
My best to all of the staff and fans here at CHTV.

What a wonderful surprise this game was--I don't think many of us were expecting a strong winning performance on the road vs. a very good team, especially with so many guys out.

Aggression early on offense and all game long on defense paid off handsomely.

Game MVPs: Love, Watson, Gary, and Owens. Heath is a keeper.

Coaching thumbs up to MLF for some of his calls--with the notable exception of the ill-conceived two-point try. He definitely bested Campbell, who strayed outside the boundaries of logic with some of his decisions.

Hats of to the O-Line for not allowing a sack, and Love for getting rid of the ball when he needed to. Now if only they could run block--help!

We didn't produce an abundance of first downs in the second half, but at least we managed a few, which was enough to keep some possession and the Lions deeper on their side of the field when we punted.

A little drama at the end was to be expected, so there was a big sigh of relief when the onside kick dribbled harmlessly into Reed's hands. We finished the job!

yeah, those of us in the "NFL fan industry" know that when you make a LB line up in the 3 position....... they're still a LB..... just lined up inside.

Save all the face you want MLF and Joe, but the extra beef inside on D made a heck of a difference today and made Goff have to beat them with his arm (which predictably, he couldn't).

Wow! After 66 years without a title, I would think Lions fans would be less prone to being super cocky.
As humans, we do tend to go back and forth from overly optimistic to overly pessimistic.
A good thing about Jordan Love, apparently, is that he seems to keep himself from getting too high and too low.
He just keeps plugging away.
This admirable demeanor just may put him over the top into the upper echelon of NFL QBs in the near future.

and his footwork. I love watching the QB School break down Love and he's constantly picking up where Love's bad throws are related to bad footwork........ but his decision making is quite sound.

I'm seeing his pocket presence really developing too. It's amazing what decent pocket protection is doing for him.

Minniman, your post indicates that Love can indeed get better and better -- which is my fond hope for him.
It seems there's been a school of thought that Love will forever be stuck in mediocrity, because there's no way to coach accuracy, or to coach up Love in other ways.
I'm reluctant to believe that as a general rule, and more reluctant to believe it in the particular case of Jordan Love.
***
Also, I tend to disagree with those who think that since Love has been on the Packers for three previous seasons, he shouldn't get much of a shot at quarterback unless he excels right away.
While as an apprentice in the pros for the past three seasons, Love does have some advantages over rookie QBs, I consider him basically still a rookie -- under the thought that there's really no substitute for a QB being on the field.
***
As long as Love shows a promising amount of talent as a QB, and as long as he continues to demonstrate a demeanor of quiet determination, I want to stick with him through the ups and downs ahead.
His performance today gives a big boost to my hope that he could become a top QB in the NFL, and more importantly lead the Packers to a title.

Favre said a couple of weeks ago - "a good QB needs to be able to make chicken $h!t into chicken salad".

Today we saw what Love can do when he has good OL support - along with a couple of minor "salad" moments...... that much is true.

< remember, the perfect throw needs to be matched with a completed catch [by a competent target] />

To answer the question of Love's ceiling, I've voraciously devoured commentary from ex-NFL QB's (in order to get a qualified consensus), and people who know better than me (us???) think that he's got the tools --> how he develops that, IDK???

The thing that was great about this Lions win was that NO-ONE (myself included) gave them a chance.... so - they ALL went out and played "free play" football.... and..... I think....... maybe........ surprised themselves with their level of play (minus the BS of expectation). Next is belief....... and from there, greatness is grown.

Is he a finished product? HELL NO. He's visibly got more than Brett Hundley and Deshone Kizeer to offer though.

A question to your down-voter - what are you seeing that makes you so negative?

P.S - I enjoy your posts Swisch (amongst many here) - I'm always keen to read a considered perspective.

Funny how the Lions have good stats even when they lose. Jared Goff was 29/44 for 332 yards, 2 TDs, and no interceptions. Reminds me of Stat Padford (Matthew Stafford) back in the day. The Lions WRs and RBs had good numbers too. And yet it felt like the Packer defense handled them pretty well for most of the day. They didn't need a bunch of dropped passes like they did against the Chargers either. Nice to get two fumbles and four 4th down stops, including a snuffed-out fake punt.

Wow, what a win. The energy was there from the first play. My gut reactions:
- Defense played a lot of five man fronts and limited the Lion run game. FINALLY! Without a good run game, the Lions couldn't beat the Packers. Go figure.
- Team was very disciplined today. Very few penalties. Imagine how helpful that is.
- Very few drops. Wow how helpful that is!
- I absolutely love it when Love throws the short check downs. Made everything easier.
- The defense was a monster stopping the Lions on five fourth down plays.

I don't recall the last time we won on Thanksgiving. I don't even recall exactly the last time we looked so good even with Rodgers! With all these injuries, it looks like some of these young guys said they are going to make the most of this. Owens! Heath!

So now we have MLF calling a good game, Love throwing it accurately (still a few under-throws though) and D playing solid. What's there to complain about? Answer: 20 points in first qtr and 9 the rest of the way. Lions scored 16. I always hated that the Packers never seem to stomp on a team before coasting.

Dec 3, Sunday night against the Chiefs is now something to look forward to and not just a game we are expected to lose.

Well done by our commenters today! A couple of additional items which already may have been discussed, but I will accent:

*For those who missed the post above, Jordan was 11-12 with one TD over the middle of the field today!
*I think Owens was embarrassed last week, and was out to prove he is a better player. He was solid today -12 tackles!!
*Watson set the tone early, and continued to be a force through the game....The Lions HAD to pay attention to him, which opens up opportunities for others. Soon, we will see one of those Eagle-type of games, with 2 or 3 TDs and 150+ yds as Jordan is starting to find him.
* Think about the last few years at Ford Field: Bakhtiari, Runyan, Stokes, Gary, Aaron Jones, Watson, Doubs ALL INJURED, looks like for now, we have no additional injuries. That field SUCKS!
* Also, what a change from last game with Detroit (and for the year)....very few unforced errors!
*We need to improve tackling by our secondary (not including Owens in this one). Wrap and drop them! But this YOUNG group has performed admirably in the passing game.
*We miss our ball hawks, but I feel we will see one soon from Valentine and/or Walker.
*The TV crew did an excellent job today, demonstrating Jordan's success or lack thereof. Like nearly all QBs, footwork matters, and Jordan loses consistency when throwing off his back foot.

Direct snap to Dillon is an idea I like better than JL10 being in the middle of all that. Plus he can run a route, to confuse the defense.

They ran the Love shove 3x in one game, and finally succeeded without a penalty on the third. Giving it up after that makes NO sense! Although I'd also like to see our biggest guys called in up front for it.

Great performances by -many- on a day we were short-handed (17 players on the injury report?!) in a place and against a team we have not faired well against for the last several years. Truly a 'statement game' type performance against a division-leading rival that is considered one of the top dogs in the conference.

That being said, biggest bright spot for me was minimal pre-snap penalties / mental miscues resulting in negative yardage at critical points in the game.

Perhaps the cleanest game The Packers have played all year. It certainly helps you win when you're not shooting yourself in the foot.

Here's to seeing continued improvement (a concept some fans around here seem to think is a dirty word) through the remainder of the season.. It feels like the young players on offense, and the play caller, is starting to find its identity and pacing.

Oh, and until they lose again.. 11-6 GPG

Of the 6 games remaining, only 2 are against good teams. Dare I say that 10-7 is possible?

My take for the entire season was 11-6. I figured the team would be riding the proverbial roller coaster through the half way point of the season, start to figure it out, and hopefully find their footing and go on a run late in the season.

My thoughts were if they go a game over .500 early on, the Packers could hit this late stretch of the season we're entering now and go on a solid run, in part due to "putting it all together" and aided by the seemingly soft 2nd half of the season schedule. 5-4 through week 10; 6-2 to close out.

Too many winnable games in the first half that slipped through the fingers. Not entirely unexpected with the youth of the team. The OL woes and MLF's inability to get the team ready to play were major factors I did not expect.

It was an aggressively optimistic prediction for 11-6 that I thought was entirely possible if things fell just right. While recent performances are very encouraging, I still expect some up and down play the remainder of the way. Consistency takes time. I'm still rooting for 11-6 until they lose #7. :)

Realistically, I would not be shocked if the Packers make a strong push here at the end of the season, but stumble at a key juncture and just miss out on a wildcard berth... and I don't think that would be a bad thing. Learning how to win is sometimes accelerated by coming close and failing. Obviously, the Packers "flipping the switch" or "turning the corner" would be fantastic, but with this much youth and competition in the NFL being what it is, it's not probable, but you never know.

So, let me double down.. 11-6 GPG lol

But why can he not hit the deep ball???
Just watched the all 22.
That first play is a TD if he throws it in front of Watson

Can we have a starting QB who can't hit the deep shot?
Does his other attributes make up.for it, or is it a fatal flaw???

Really? The down votes?

I am celebrating the win as much as everyone else... But still fair to wonder whether he's going to be QB1 in 2 years...

NJ,

I'm much more concerned with making the easy layups. Had JL10 made every one of those all year, the difference would be HUGE.

Meanwhile he needs to learn NOT to try threading needles from a mile away. A last minute hail Mary? Fine, but you know it's luck rather than skill if it works, and the int is inconsequential at that point.

He slides to avoid injury on the run very well. He's learned to throw it away to avoid the sack.

Whittling down the list ...

The Pack put the sorry Lions back in their place. Time to reclaim the NFC North!

Great game. IRT the missed XP, From What I saw on TV the laces were facing the kicker when he kicked it. I don’t know if that was on the snapper or the holder but I think it was on the latter.

The snaps were shaky in the Charger game. They looked better today

Key play in this big win?
IMHO, it's stuffing Campbell's trickery on 4th and 5.
It actually looked like we had smelled it out.
Watching Campbell's chagrin on the sideline was even better.

Freaking great win! I'm still a bit skeptical, but would be overjoyed to be proven wrong.

Amazing what happens when receivers catch passes, defense creates turnovers and gets pressure on the QB.

While channel surfing and seeing the score of 20-6 I thought it was a re-run from 4-5 years ago. (Took several minutes to digest)
