Gut Reactions: Packers make it harder than it should have been in win over Ravens

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers win over the Ravens.

  • Why does this team consistently make it harder than it needs to be?
  • That TD catch by MVS was so impressive.
  • I can definitely live with him.
  • TJ Slaton was uninspiring as Kenny Clark's replacement.
  • I get fans killing Savage but he was left high and dry against Andrews for much of the game by Joe Barry. Your job as a coach is to put your players in a position to succeed. Barry did Savage no favors in that regard. Andrews is a matchup problem for most safeties.
  • Holmgren would have run it three times, bled the clock and them kicked the field goat toward the end instead of fucking around and leaving so much time on the clock.
  • That said, never make apologies for winning in the NFL.
  • Aaron Jones looked explosive.
  • That throw Rodgers had to Davante over the middle toward the end of the first half was absolutely insane.
  • Rashan Gary needs to stop trying to win inside at the expense of the edge.
  • They ran another bunch set with Davante running a shallow cross and it was glorious.
  • The North is not enough.
  • Go Pack Go.

This team crapped the bed in the 4th quarter. Special teams mistakes. Passive pass defense. Poor rush lane discipline. Poor offensive execution.

You have to step on the throat of well coached teams. We were the better team and were beyond lucky to come out with the dub.

Close wins count the same. Hope the coaches learn from it.

Call Capers and Pettine. Pretty sure they’re available. I mean, they had the defense playing top 10, didn’t they?

Oh, wait… No, that’s Barry. Guess we know who the buffoon is, don’t we.

This is true Bear, it was that drive with the two time outs that seemed to lose all momentum. I’d have liked to see more Dillon later: getting hard yards, eating up the clock and giving our D a rest. It was almost as if we decided we could relax on both O and D.

Andrews is impressive and that QB is too good to be a back up, but we lacked the killer instinct: play till it’s over if one wants to be a winner.

There are few, if any complaints we could have about Mlf coaching, but not stepping on an opponents throat when the opportunity arising is one I would have to agree with. Great win by NO last night:)

If MLF could have one set of downs back it would be the three and out drive at the end giving ravens life to come back and score. It was a 3 horrible plays that were called.

Have to give some credit to the Ravens. They played a very strong game even though some will argue (I'll be the first) the Packers let them back in the game when they shouldn't have.

Here's to another Division Championship ! ....but as Aaron states, "The division is not enough."

It was a one point victory but we'll take the W !

Rashan Gary needs to stop trying to win inside at the expense of the edge.
Tipa Gileai needs to stop trying to win inside at the expense of the edge.

Garvin/Preston need to stop trying to win inside at the expense of the edge, but they aren't nearly the issue the other two are.

Actually, overal this team has done very good against mobile QB’s. We were all praising Barry after he went thru the gauntlet of KC, Arizona and Seattle’s very mobile QB’s at 2-1. They did a great job of containment on those games. I’m thinking two things came into play on this. Not much tape on Huntley and without Clark it showed his importance to this team.

they desperately missed kenny clark. the middle of the D looked like something i havent really seen all season, and not having clark is the reason for that. they got pushed off the ball, the ravens won the LOS all game for the most part. but when you win games like this, generally the team come back next week with something to prove. I expect the D to turn it back around next week.

I will add that it looks to me that players underestimated Ravens regarding their situation with injuries (17 players on IR) and misses by Covid protocols. Plus, they underestimate Huntley, who is very good young QB. By my estimation he is better than Fields, Tua, Jones, Zach etc. He has strong arm, but still has to work on his precision.

They stiffened their game after Ravens scored 2 TD and when they built lead, they came back to "easy win" thinking. That is what it looked to me.

I agree. Not having Kenny Clarke and an undermanned secondary exposed the soft 5-10 yards in this defense. Give the Ravens credit. They got what the Bears were trying to do last week. The QB draw was very effective with a QB where there is not much video on. Unscripted looks will kill a defense at this time of the season, just ask the Cardinals, and Tampa Bay. The Packers found a way to survive and advance. And at this point in the season, that is all that counts.

Where is Paul Ott Carruth ? Would love to here his breakdown of this game and the special teams.

What an embarrassing display of "Martyball" the last 6 minutes of this game. We turtled up on both sides of the ball and played not to lose and if it wasn't for Harbaugh going for the two-point conversion we would have been in OT and had lost all the momentum. This game stunk and had the ghost of Mike McCarthy written all over it.

Once again nobody will be held accountable for piss poor special teams play. How is it. that the opposing kick returner gets to the 30 yard line before he is even touched while our return guy can barely make it to the 20 yard line. Unfknbelievable...........

They are afraid to fire Drayton, its pretty clear. I don't care how far into the season it is, there isn't one single solitary aspect of special teams besides our punter(and his own talent that Drayton is not responsible for) that we are even AVERAGE at. Every aspect of our special teams besides just punting is as bad as i've ever seen at any level of football. Replacing Drayton immediately is an immediate upgrade of the special teams - but they won't. We will just wait until it either costs us a SHOT at the Super Bowl if not the Super Bowl itself.

Impressive – a 11-3 record

Not impressive:
Of course the STs first in the que with Yiadom's interference on the punt receiver. Perhaps he was thinking they were still playing the Bears. Just an terrible, awful and stupid play (but unfortunately not atypical of the STs).

The DEs and OLBs who consistently gave up the edge to Huntley – joined by the entire D who never adjusted throughout the game.

Final Thoughts:
The D sure missed Kenny Clark.

It would have been nice if A.R. could have put together an M.V.P. - like, clock-killing drive with 4 minutes left - so as to spare us all the added drama and anxiety. But he didn't - so thanks to Savage and Stokes for saving the game.

I was at the game. Savage mirrored the route and almost caught the pass. Huntley tried to aim the ball mid-throw when he realized that Savage had beat their TE to the spot. It was a truly great play that saved the Packers.

Do I remember correctly? First possesion: 1. down 4 yards Aaron Jones, 2. down 3 yards Aaron Jones, 3. down Aaron Rodgers overthrown wide open Davanre Adams for at least 3 to 4 yards, 4. down punt!

That was the best description of MVP player. That is how Packers needs to play, by you, "Real Packer's fan".

Or, will we talk about throw in the 3rd Q that almost killed Lazard by asking him Houdini jump. Or 2 throws at the last full possesion high and deep behind end (gold) zone. I believe with those few throws, AR already won MVP award, because those throws are example how excellent QB should play...

Rodgers was making throws from some insane angles for most of the game. But as you point out Croat, Rodgers can get overconfident when he is in the zone. MLF did have a little talk with him after that series, and Rodgers did pull it back afterwords.

I questioned Harbaugh going for it on 4th and 5 with 12 minutes remaining. That said, GB looked like the superior team all game. Harbaugh got his team down to a better than 50% chance to win the game outright on the last play. I suspect Harbaugh would have settled for that chance without playing the game otherwise at all.

Barry has been impressive this season, but he left Andrews alone with savage all night, as noted above, and he was always winning that. Andrews is flat out good. We never employed a spy on the QB. Why? It was those two and not much else all game. Not Barry’s best day in GB. Too complacent?

He couldn't employ a QB spy in Campbell because the DL was attrocious and more often than not Campbell was sprinting to the edge to be the edge defender because our OLB play was even worse setting the edge.

i was screaming at the tv about that. the only thing i will say, is toward the very end amos was on andrews with help from lbs, and he was still catching balls. and in the final play, savage was roaming around free and was able to do what he did best last year.... play that robber position and make plays on the ball. but why did it take sooo long for coach to take savage off of andrews? my initial thought was they just wanted to play base 3 4 to stop huntley from running, and play man on the back end. The only problem with that was huntley was a pretty damn good thrower as well as a runner. i just dont understand all the man coverage on andrews with savage.... glad they adjusted, even if it was basically the final play of the game!

The addition of Quadzilla and the Quadfather to the Hands Team improved Special Teams at least 164% (estimate).

Please hurry back, Kenny Clark.

That darn MVS and his one-trick-poniness keeps showing up big. How can that be?

Again, Mr and Mrs Stokes, congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. He’s prefect, except for his canoe paddle hands. Solid chest on the boy, though.

11-3 is most unexpected and how we got here has been a great deal of fun to watch. Enjoy the ride, friends.

I like John Harbaugh, but talk about shooting yourself in the foot, and then shooting yourself in the other foot.

I'm not saying I'd do what Baltimores Coach did, but the team must be inspired that there is never a doubt of what their coach is going to do and his belief in them to get it done. I see a lot of that from the Bucs also with an overall better team to do it with.

That offensive drive to open the second half was like a carbon copy of what they did last week against the Bears. And unlike previous years, I’m never really worried this team is gonna let it slip out of their hands. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little concerned on that 2-point conversion attempt…

Okay, the North is not enough; we want to win against challengers from all directions. Yet, winning the division is still an awesome accomplishment -- particularly for the third year in a row -- perhaps especially for those of us who stayed loyal to the Packers in the '70s and '80s (when we had perhaps just one or two division titles altogether).
We were reminded today that a cardinal sin in football is overlooking a weaker opponent -- but it wasn't by the Packers, who notched their 11th victory in 14 games.
As much as I want the Packers to keep their eyes on the prize of the Super Bowl, I've learned over the years to enjoy the smaller achievements of success along the way.

"never make apologies for winning in the NFL"

Absolutely. This game was going to be a grind...I just didn't anticipate a grind in the 30s. To quote Bearmeat: never underestimate a well-coached team in their building.

Should've had MVS in the corner to salt it away, but had to settle for 3.

Just like Heinecke and Fields, Packers had no interest in doing anything to hold up a run-first QB. Give Huntley credit for not turning the ball over and taking what the defense gave him (which was too much). How many first downs did he have running the ball? A lot. Still, he never really took any chances with the football and he gave the Ravens a chance to win.

Still, 1-0 this week and playing at home against a run-first Cleveland team on a short week next week. Rest up...avoid the 'rona.

Too late on the Omni. Good news is it has been here for months before our Public Health figured that out. Which means we all have been already exposed. Outside the overreaction by the media, all pro sports teams in the U.S. and us normal folk should be fine for the rest of the season. (I have a pet theory that the Packers were exposed to the first variant back in 2019. As a result most of core roster was able to handle the follow-on variants better the other sports teams)

Another torturous win, but I'll take it. Had Rodgers hit Lazard in the end zone to go up 35-17 we could have relaxed, but nooOOoooOOOooo. Still, Rodgers made some incredible throws, as usual. We are so lucky to have him at QB.

Arguably, Harbaugh lost the game for the Ravens with three aggressive decisions that backfired.

Crosby seems to be back in a groove but our special teams are still far from special.

I was impressed with Huntley. Maybe we would have been better off with Jackson with a bum ankle.

Kudos to the Lions for knocking off Arizona and giving us a little more separation over them. Our biggest threat in the NFC though is (and IMHO, has always been) Tampa.

11-3 sure looks good though.

It wasn’t pretty in the end but I’ll take an ugly victory over a “good” loss any day. Anyone think the Ravens fans feel great because they played “hard”. They needed a “W” badly. They didn’t get it.

Another ugly win but it counts.
Defense needs to tighten up. They were vulnerable today especially against Huntley. They made the big play at the end when it counted the most. Harbaugh cost his team the game by trying to win it with the 2 point conversion.
First 2 point conversion the Packers stopped this season.

Packer STs were terrible again today with bad penalties and a poor punt at the worst moment. Bojoquez is a good punter but it seems like he has one bad punt per game.

OL was great again today and the primary reason that we won the game. OL and Rodgers led the way today. Jones should have had more touches.

Bring on the Browns. GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

Excellent post as usual Since '61. That's the 2nd time in a month Harbaugh went for the win with a 2 pt. play instead of a tie AND LOST . There were also 45 seconds on the clock and I'm thinking his best chance was to win it right there and put the pressure on Crosby If Rodgers would have gotten them in position for a attempt.

BTW...Did you SEE that shot of Drayton on the sideline?? Part of me feels really sorry for him. Mo Drayton will probably NEVER get another coaching job in the NFL once he's fired. I don't know, it's a TOUGH position, but can MLF continue to keep him employed?

I mean the announcers are now just counting the number of times the ST screws up each game...It's EXPECTED and the Packers deliver...EVERYTIME!

It’s a no win situation Nick unless the STs improve dramatically. If they don’t Drayton should gone and MLF looks bad for hire and keeping him all season. If Drayton is not fired at some point MLF looks bad for giving him another season.

MLF needs to bite the bullet, take the hit for Drayton and move ASAP. Thanks, Since ‘61

I had a bit of a bad feeling coming into this, expecting a down-to-the-wire job.

Not a very good day for the D - and the STs were awful (even nullified a pretty good return by Amari with a penalty), BUT at the end, we stopped the 2-pointer and Dillon came through on the hands team.

11-3 with a patchwork OL (who have played pretty well) and lots of injuries and illnesses. Let's sweep the AFC North (all are pretty tough this year) next week!! I hope #97 is back!!

Is MM the Coach? This Defense needs Clark. No push in the middle. When will Gutey Learn? Slaton still did better then LanCaster. I thought Hunley looked like Colin Kapernick. The rush goes inside. He went out. He was just to fast for them. How many prayers were answered watching the Special Teams? Call the pope. I wanted Queen. But Campbell makes me so happy. I hope Rodgers tries acupuncture for his toe. I never had any doubts he'd keep the packers in it. And the refs didn't hurt either. This time. This make shift OL is doing just enough. It all starts with the CENTER. Not bad Gentlemen. Good job again!

Most of the runs were outside, not up the middle as Field’s were. Lowry looked like Lowry last year without Clark. Slaton was given a big ask to replace Clark and carry his comrades.

That's the second time in three games "High Roller" Harbaugh has gone for 2 to win the game--both times trying a pass to Andrews on the right side and coming up empty. So the Packers were ready for it after seeing the film. We couldn't have picked a better time to FINALLY stop a 2-pt. conversion, so celebrate wildly!

Two horrible calls, one against each team: the low tackle by Savage (how can this be a penalty??, it wasn't low at all) and the pass interference against the Ravens vs. Lazard (a game-changing play that bailed us out on that drive).

Not really impressed with the defensive game plan. The three-man rush reared its ugly head in the fourth quarter, and in the first half, Andrews wasn't impeded off the LOS at all. Anybody familiar with the Ravens knows Andrews is a big part of their offense, so I don't know what we were thinking here. As far as Savage goes, how or why he got thought he could make a play behind Andrews on his second TD....??

The secondary did a fine job against the receivers, though, and I was impressed with Stokes' tackling.

Always a treat to watch Marcedes rumble and stumble....

I have a burning curiosity about what goes on inside the confines with the special teams coaching. Is Drayton a hologram or a figment of the imagination? Some of these players just mentally check out when they enter the field of play--there is no evidence whatsoever that any coaching took place at all. What were you thinking, Yiadom? These guys just seem so confused, anxious, and unrehearsed sometimes; I've never seen anything like it.

That 10-point spread was a little insane, wasn't it?

We have trouble putting the other team away.
Got way too cute at the end. Where was Dillon ? Use clock. Think we were feeling pretty good that we had it won after the Ravins went for it in their own end and didn't make it. Should have bore down to put it away.
Special teams are going to cost us at some point moving forward if we don't get it fixed.

Happy with the result, but still too many unforced errors led to a nail-biting finish that didn't have to be that way.

Special teams:
I'm going to call it Stupid Teams until they prove me otherwise. Two stupid penalties right away to start the game is just downright embarrassing after last week's parade of mistakes. The positive? Only one long return and Crosby made all his kicks.

Defense:
- God, we missed Kenny Clark. We can't expect Slaton to be a Clark clone though either. He's still super young, so I won't throw in the towel on him just yet, but he has a long way to go.
- Why on earth was Stokes playing 25 yards off Marquise Brown? I get that Brown is fast, but so is Stokes! On one drive they threw that sideline route to him 4-5 times! I was hoping Stokes would jump that route or get closer to the line of scrimmage, but no.
- Why was Savage left hung out to dry? Joe Barry, please ADJUST
- Why was there seemingly no spy on Huntley? It might as well have been Lamar Jackson out there

Offense:
- Some of Rodgers throws were laser beams. We've just become so accustomed to it, but you gotta appreciate it
- Kudos to Ravens D for the job on Adams. He was neutralized for the most part
- I wish they fed Jones more carries
- The O-line continues to impress me. It's basically the 2nd string group but they are holding up pretty damn well. Just need Bakhtiari back, but I'm starting to wonder when he'll ever come back
- Deguara is finally getting more involved, always nice to see Big Dawg (Lewis) with some catches as well

I got my wish - we came out healthy from this game!

Onto Cleveland!

It has been a bad week for "analytics" from the Chargers and Ravens deciding to go for it and be overly aggressive cost them both.

MVS had a great game. If Aaron can hit him in stride it would be great.

Thank you Detroit. Both of your two wins were nice gifts. Now let somebody give Tampa an L and give us some breathing room.

3rd down playing soft had me feeling a little déjà vu.

When does ST be held accountable? MLF is wrong if he thinks that change at this point isn't a positive. It doesn't matter who might be better. This is unacceptable.

That second half first drive was such a tease after last game at the same point.

Perhaps so - Brady does love to stay in the pocket and work the seam.

He does get rid of the ball quick though, so it would depend on who his checkdown options are. Maybe the smart play is to start with containment and outside management and go for the splash plays as a last resort.

On a side note - Gary underestimated huntley tonight. I hope that he learned a lot from this game.

You guys got it right. A culmination says the coach's are failing. no contain is a coaching adjustment. no additional help for Savage, coaching adjustment. Stokes playing off 15 yards, poor coaching - hey they don't through the bomb every play. Pass rush ineffective, second team players are not good. Special team play, no speed, players are not smart - ya dumb.
Play calling and game management very predictable - start Jones, finish with Dillon.

Yes, it looked behind Andrews. However, deflecting an NFL pass that is a couple of feet from the receiver usually results in an incompletion. The GB CB didn't have the reaction time to catch it and it is unlikely that Andrews would have.

Savage had a rough outing but that was a positive play in my book.

Speaking for myself I was mainly concerned that the Packers offense weren’t able to close out the game In the middle of the 4th (when they had the chance).

At this stage of the season I’m looking for a SB contender to not capitulate in the 4th - although I do think that a Kenny Clark led defensive front is a vastly different (and better) team.

Having played a number of mobile QB’s already and prevailed - I was surprised that the D changed strategy….. and seriously underestimated Huntley…………. Frankly, this was they type of performance that I was hoping from Love when he had the 1’s.

All this going for it on 4th down in the League has really been biting teams bad the last few weeks. Even more than the going for 2 at the end, was the stop on the first drive, that I bet Ravens fans are pretty pissed about considering how it ended.

Even so, the Packers had it and it should not have come to it. But come on packer fans, we all were thinking it. So how are they going to make this where they have to recover an onside kick in the last 2 minutes? We were all thinking it.

How they do int he playoffs still comes down to how does the line play - on both sides of the ball. They may have to play teams like New Orleans, San Fran, Dallas, Tampa.... They better have their lines in order.

Yeah, it was harder than it should have been, and yeah Savage got abused, and yeah the lack of defensive contain was maddening, and don't start with special teams etc. BUT...

I've been awfully hard on MVS, and we know Lazard hasn't been very involved as a ball catcher until recently. But both are showing encouraging signs to say the least. Admittedly, the Ravens' secondary has been decimated by injuries, but we need those two guys to produce. If those two get hot, the O could be unstoppable.

Speaking of decimated by injuries, I thought Buck and Aikman went over the top about how injured the Ravens were, but seemed to ignore how the Packers have no Kenny Clark, and no Jaire, and are operating with an o-line that they got on special at Walmart. Baltimore is still a very dangerous team, especially at home, and the Packers got the W.

Yes, Lamar was out, but hey... Tyler Huntley looks like the real deal. That dude almost certainly made himself a shit ton of money. Some QB needy team is going to come after him.

ARod was as great as usual, but man, that opening drive miss to Davante and the missed TD to Lazard... wonder how different the game would have been if he had hit those two throws.

Davante looked off to me, though I can't really say why. Hope it's just a down game and not a secret injury.

BOTTOM LINE: This week could not have gone much better for GB than it did. The Packers took care of business on the road, against the strongest opponent remaining on their schedule, and clinched the division title. Elsewhere in the NFC, Arizona got destroyed by the Leo's (!!), and Tampa not only put up a goose egg but they lost three very important players to injury. Home field is Green Bay's to lose.

- Oh. I guess we have the best record in the nfl. Given one of the hardest schedules too.
- Our offense is clicking even though we’re missing our entire starting offensive line. Bahk. Jenkins. Myers. Turner. And still putting up 30+.
- Gonna chalk up the defensive mess to not being ready for an unknown qb. Probably changed the gameplan after Lamar wasn’t going to play. (Looks like we should have stayed with the original)
- Definitely could have bracketed Andrews after he got all of their yards.
- I know the special-teams was terrible, but I will probably take that performance over the top ranked special teams in Baltimore. Bright side: We did not give Up a kick return or a punt return. We did not muff Or fumble a return. We made a field goal. We made our extra points. We did not give Up a two point conversion. And we did not give up an onside kick. I’ll take that as a win for that unit.
