Gut Reactions: Brett Favre Goes Into the Packers Hall of Fame

The Packers legend and many of his former teammates, coaches and colleagues make it a night to remember.

In the coming days, weeks, months and years, Packers fans will talk about the night Brett Favre went into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and had his number retired by the organization.

There will undoubtedly be countless amounts of content created over the course of the next few days around Favre's appearance at Lambeau tonight. I just wanted to highlight a few things that stuck out to me.

  • The moment Brett came out of the tunnel onto Lambeau field is one of the greatest I've ever seen at Lambeau. That was outstanding. I wish I could have been there.
  • Lance Allen did an absolutely outstanding job.
  • It's incredibly exciting to know that Bart Starr is working toward joining Brett for the Bears game on Thanksgiving. So great to see him and hear from him.
  • Favre's ability to recall everyone, from the game day operations staff to the ticket managers, was absolutely incredible. That he mentioned so many of them by name, without notes, tells you how woven into the fabric of the Packers he truly is.
  • I could have listened to him telling stories for hours. Holmgren and Winters too.
  • Speaking of stories, I'm pretty sure that's the first time anyone has ever told the story about Favre flying home prior to that Titans preseason game. I certainly had never heard it or read about it before.
  • The "fat ass" Andy Reid story was another one I'd never heard. This week was long on stories that most die-hard Packers fans had heard a hundred times. It's hard to find many that we haven't. Both Favre and Winters provided some great behind-the-scenes looks for people like you and me who consume everything we can when it comes to this team.
  • I loved that Mike Sherman, Tom Rossley, Sherm Lewis, Steve Mariucci and so many others from the past were there.
  • I only cried twice. I kept it together pretty well until he got choked up addressing the fans in Lambeau. Then all bets were off.
  • It's so great to have him back in the fold. It really is.
  • Thank you Bob Harlan, Ron Wolf, and Mike Holmgren.
  • But most of all, thank you Brett Favre.

You hit on everything Aaron. I could have watched all night myself. The haters have no idea why his teammates and coaches cared so much about him. Holmgren was fantastic too. How he mentioned the "little guys" who never get credit. The pro shop mustva made a fortune on #4 jerseys tonight. Wish I could have been there.

All I can say is WOW, watching him play was awesome and the memories will last forever. Grew up watching the Packers in the mid 70's. If we beat the Bears that all that mattered. Hell if we won 8 games it was reason to celebrate. What Ron,Mike and Brett did for the Packers is just unbelievable. Man I can't wait for the season to start. How many other fans of other teams can say that and mean it. WOW

All i can add is that my dad always turned the tv off early in the 3rd quarter if favre threw an interception and told us the game was over. 75% of the time (in my mind not stats) when i immediately turn the tube back on the pack came back. I always let him listen to the radio the next morning before i said anything. He still tries to rip the arms of his recliner and slams the remote as he hits the power button even though favre is gone he always has somebody else to blame.

Favre made the game fun to watch and tvs were turned on everywhere. just when i was about to give it up to the queens on that monday night freeman made that catch. Those things were not a big deal to me back then because they seemed normal but wow, that shit was fun. Damn fun.

Facetious Response:

I was going to watch. But then I changed my mind. Then I blamed my wife for telling me that I couldn't actually watch it because she made other plans after I told her I wasn't interested in it. I got furious, and demanded a marriage annulment so I could go sleep with her sister. She refused and said she would grant an annulment only if my next marriage was to someone she doesn't know. And she's only allowing that because she's got a better husband lined up as soon as I leave. But I've still got eyes for her sister.....

No worries though. I'm sure in 7 years all will be forgiven, even if I never apologize.

Serious Response:

I actually didn't watch but I'm getting a tape sent to me. I know the comment above will piss off several of you. My apologies. I couldn't resist. I want to be clear that I am thankful for Brett's career here.

Bearmeat, I get that it's facetious, but really the fact that you think a business employment relationship where the individual is traded without any personal say to a business, then after many years of dedicated service, is given clear signal that the manager wants your understudy to take over your group -- that wanting to continue your career in this circumstance is somehow remotely equivalent to violating/terminating marriage vows that you freely entered into, that may be saying more about your perspective than you realize, lol.

Whatever bitterness you may have, I hope you can at least concede one thing -- Brett was right, he could still do it, and he should have still been playing. That he led two different teams to two NFC championship games in the span of 24 months says it all.

Puddnhead, you assert that you get that Bearmeat is being facetious, and then proceed as if you never heard of the word. Bearmeat's comment says nothing about his perspective on life. To suggest otherwise is insinuating something for which you have no evidence. fa·ce·tious fəˈsēSHəs/Submit adjective: treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.

Pretty amazing evening IMO. I've said it more than once and I know others feel the same way, Brett Favre helped turn a franchise which had been losing since the first year Lombardi left, back into the winner it's been for 20 plus years now again. I understand some will never forgive Favre and are entitled to that opinion. I'm with the 67000 plus that filled Lambeau and the millions that watched on T.V. it was time to welcome ole #4 back.

The clips they showed of Favre getting clobbered, he took some vicious hits. With the new rules they have today, he couldva played till he's 50.

Didn't they? There was one where he was sandwiched between 2 players but both were hitting him in the head....Vicious!

I was also thinking how that sliding TD by Levens probably would be overturned today too.

I am glad he is back, yes he did act like a dick but hey that s Brett, looking back now I guess he felt jilted when Rodgers came on board and after 16 yrs as the man he didnt know how to accept that, if you were happily married and in love and after 16 years she tells you its over I guess thats kinda the feelling, hurt turns to bitterness , revenge then maybe reconcilliation, and dont think Brett doesnt know how great Rodgers is either, so lets just welcome him back and move on, thompson tWins needs to lighten up or stick to the Viking sites.

He's not a Vikings fan Lphill. He loves him some Ted Thompson, some have suggested a little too much. I imagine the comment Favre made about the Packers being the winning organization they are today, Lambeau being what it is today with the Atrium and development all around the stadium was because of Ron Wolf, well I'd bet tWins about had a stroke and is still seething this morning.

My gut reaction? I hope we've seen the last Bert Farve story for a few months and can now get back to football.

Smart move by the Packers. Get this done before training camp so now they can focus on the upcoming season. It'll die down soon and the media will have Johnny football, Dez Byant, RGIII, or some other clown to talk about 24/7.

I wonder if Brett will hand Aaron the Lombardi this year in SF? That would be cool.

Obviously hope the Pack wins. But if they win, it ain't about Favre anymore. It wasn't his job to be a mentor and it certainly isn't his job to hand the trophy to Rodgers.

Well, instead of a washed up Terry Bradshaw, it could just as easy be a washed up Brett Favre. Perfectly reasonable.

As long as someone's passing up the trophy when the game is over - I couldn't care less who that person is.

I agree, that would be cool. It would really show that Brett had buried the hatchet. Someone should start an on-line petition for Brett to hand #12 the Lombardi the next time the Packers win the Super Bowl. But I got $100 that says you could get a million signatures on that petition and Brett couldn't bring himself to do it. Because that would mean that #12 has one more Super Bowl win than #4, and unless Brett has changed tremendously I just don't think he could deal with the moment. But I honestly, truly and sincerely would love to be wrong.

There are a few points that I would like to make about the ceremonies for Brett Favre yesterday.
First, the Packers, the Packers Hall of Fame and the media all did an excellent job. The entire ceremony was handled excellently. My congratulations to the entire Packer organization.
Second, I felt that Favre handled himself very well, he was humble, gracious, emotional and very thankful.
Third, to my fellow Packer fans, the crowd at Lambeau was wonderful. I was fortunate to be in the original Yankee Stadium on June 8, 1969 for Mickey Mantle Day when "The Mick" retired. Mick received a 10+ minute ovation that remains that loudest sound I have ever heard and I thought that the stadium was going to come down around us. But yesterday at Lambeau, when Favre came out of the tunnel the roar from the crowd was the second loudest ovation I have ever heard and it lasted for 4+minutes. It was a great tribute and well deserved. The fans did a great job and I congratulate them.
I have attended several retirement ceremonies for many of the Yankees over the years but what the Packers did yesterday was as well done as any ceremony that I have attended. It was a great feeling and another great Packer moment and memory. The only better feeling will be for the Packers to return the Lombardi trophy to Lambeau. Go Pack! Thanks, Since '61

Great post as usual. I'm am envious about Micky Mantle day, although I watched on TV. That was a great day. As his plaque says. "A great teammate". Humble even with all that he accomplished. Greatest of them all. Hurt from day one and still a HOF player.
