Gut Reactions: 2014 Week Three vs The Lions

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers' loss to the Lions.

  • Let's hear it for the defense. I don't think anyone expected them to play near the level they did today, especially up front.
  • The offense, on the other hand, needs a complete re-imagining.
  • Wait, I'm sorry, that would require imagination, something Mike McCarthy seems to have in short supply.
  • Mike Neal played one hell of a game.
  • What in the world were Mike & Aaron thinking with that call on their own 1 yard line? Pulling a guard? (Who never hit anyone by the way) Rodgers clearly checked to that play. Just mind-boggling against a Lions front that has been dominate against the run in particular this year and against the Packers' offensive line in that building.
  • A bad play to start the game for Eddie Lacy and a bad play to end it. And not much in-between.
  • It is downright embarrassing that the Packers couldn't take advantage of a secondary comprising mostly of guys picked up off the streets of Motown earlier this week.
  • Not one screen play. Not one. Maybe one was called and Rodgers checked out of it - but not one from scrimmage on a day when the Lions' front was pinning their ears back and gunning for Rodgers.
  • Rodgers had a touchdown on the final failed 4th down play to Nelson, if he just puts it out in front of him.
  • Speaking of which - a bunch of bad throws from QB1 today, sprinkled with some lasers that reminded you just how good he is - which made all the crap all that more frustrating.
  • Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi did a great job of sticking with the running game and getting Reggie Bush matched up with Hawk, Lattimore and Barrington in space. That's obviously a mismatch for the Lions all day long.
  • Megatron got his, but he didn't kill the Packers.
  • TJ Lang got upset with me for putting him in The Bad last week. He's right. I should have waited for this week.
  • DuJuan Harris didn't do a whole lot from scrimmage when given the chance.
  • Jarrett Boykin should be demoted permanently.
  • Congrats to Ha Ha Clinton Dix for reeling in his first NFL interception and for stopping the drought at the safety position since 2012.
  • Julius Peppers' strip/sack/fumble recovery was one hell of a play and why they brought him to Green Bay. Later, when he was turned around against a wide receiver in coverage? Not so much.
  • McCarthy truly needs to get his head out of his ass on offense. There is zero creativity and little being done to get guys in a position to make plays.
  • That said, fans jumping ship, proclaiming that this is a "8-8 Packers team at best" have clearly not been paying attention the last several years. To the Packers or the NFL. How this team looks today will bare little resemblance to how it looks in November and December. And McCarthy has been here before, with everyone doubting him and ready to ride him out of town on a rail. (Which is what I am led to believe by some of the hyperventilating in my Twitter feed)
  • When you're going to go 11-5, you need to lose 5 games.
  • And let's not absolve the quarterback for the offense's problems. Lots of bad throws, a couple of poor decisions and some real indecision in the pocket cost his team big today.
  • Lotta season left.
  • Go Pack.

They need to start playing Rodgers more in the preseason. He continually starts slow every season which shows me that he needs to get more work in.

IIRC, it would have been a 55 yarder (although in a dome), but yeah, that was a really bad sack to take. Throw the ball away sometimes!

You're right, these team is never ready to play this early in the season.

However they DID run a screen. To Davante Adams. lol (It was incomplete.)

Peppers was awesome today. I don't expect him to go step for step with a WR.

Quarless showed up today.

Is Aaron a certified coward like Jim Everett? I'm starting to fear the worst.

I know this was an embarrassing loss, but let's get to the important issue: How many plays did they run?

Slot cornerbacks I've never heard of continue to blanket Cobb. He can't get separation. Rodgers down and distance situational awareness this year has been awful. Can't blame the oline for it, either.

Agree on almost everything. Yeah, I think everything.

No more runs when you are on your own 1, 2, 3, 4. I've never liked it, and would rather go 3 and out on passing plays, than risk the safety, on a run. If you arent gonna convert on passing on 3 downs, you're punting. Give up the safety and you're punting. I'd rather take my chances on AR on 3 downs to get some distance from the end zone, than a run.

And for gosh sakes AR, it was about 2 1/2 left in the 1st, and instead of running, you throw an awkward pass to Starks, who has to twist to catch it. Run AR, run!

An Aaron Rodgers offense should NEVER EVER EVER EVER score only 7 pts. MM has led this team into mediocrity. His preparation of this team, play calling, and decision making are totally inept.

MM needs to be roughed up by Winston Moss NOW!

Boykin has dropped the most balls and theyve been ugly but Arodge has missed far more throws than I've ever seen him miss before. Not to mention the happy feet. How come none of Rodgers' LOS checks result in positive plays?? Seems like all his checks end up with a Lacy pitch for a 2 yard loss or a 5 step drop waiting for a big play only to be sacked while NEVER CONSIDERING A HOT READ OR CHECK DOWN AND APPARENTLY TAKING SCREEN PLAYS OUT OF THE F%^K(&% PLAYBOOK!!! Hey, must be the pu@@y! Do us both a favor, Arodge, stay single...

The fact is the Pack have played three of the best fronts in the NFL: Seattle, NYJ and now Detroit. They'll have Carolina and Detroit again, but aside from those two, running the ball is going to be far easier going forward.

Best rhythm the packer offense has looked all season is in the no huddle/hurry up. Why not start the game with this? That and not spotting the opponents 7 would be a big help too.

Packers are lucky they play in the NFC North with the Lions who couldn't put away a game that was handed to them, the Cutler lead Bears that will self destruct and the hapless Vikes. The Pack are playing like a team where complacency is A-Okay.

Let's hope this was the kick in the pants that gets things started to 11-5.

If Mike really wanted to get the running game going, he would use misdirection. Why run straight at these guys? They're stout. Take advantage of their overpursuit. Make them over run the play using draws and screens. This will also slow down their pass rushing. Forcing them to pursue sideline to sideline while eating up time of possession will also wear them down, as they themselves are not "smaller and quicker" dline types.

This is basic football 101. But Mike is not intersted in any of that. Mike only wants to use Lacy as a decoy, so that Aaron can stat whore deep.

Those are great observations.

Also, for the third game in a row, Rodgers wasn't super sharp. The windows were much tighter than we'd expect from a depleted Detroit secondary, but he was off.

I think we have to begin to ask, "what's wrong with Rodgers?"

"Forcing them to pursue sideline to sideline" - while this is great in theory, in practice, they tried doing this, repeatedly, on those pitch plays. Doesn't work if your interior guys (Lang and Sitton were both guilty today) can't seal guys off at the second level.

That's true, but that's where the screens and traps come in. They did run a draw to Harris though. Then iirc another one on the exact next play, which didn't get much. lol

First one worked though.

He's too stubborn to exploit a defense's weakness. Its my way or the highway all the way to a pathetic 19-7 loss... NOT ONE SCREEN PASS YESTERDAY!!! No misdirection !! Pulling a guard two yards deep in the endzone leading ot a safety. These are terrible decisions! Why are you running into the strength of the defense and not exploiting the pedestrian secondary with quick routes the likes of slants, bubbles, crosses....NOPE, JUST BANG YOUR HEAD AGAINST A WALL!!! McCarthy and Rodgers were freaking terrible playcalling and checking at the line. Always wanting the big play and or running into the strength of the defesne. ICK!! THE DEFENSE PLAYED GREAT, DAMNIT!!

I don't think they should give up on Boykin just yet, but they should definitely work Adams in a bit more. Quarles was outstanding today.

I really don't understand the continued emphasis on running the ball when it clearly wasn't working. Would have liked to see something involving Randall Cobb out of the backfield or, perhaps, throwing the ball. Some trickery to loosen the defense up a bit.

My thoughts on this game:

- There's a problem on this team with the receivers. There were times where Rodgers had ample time to throw, and yet no one was open. Now is that the play call, or the talent? Because as Aaron mentioned, the secondary of the Lions is terrible.

- Eddie Lacy still doesn't look like the reigning Rookie of the Year.

- I really pity this defense. For the amount of crap the unit as a whole takes, when they finally play a pretty a good game the offense completely lets them down. They just can't win.

- Lotta season left...that seems like an optimistic way of saying "it's going to be a long year."

HOW TO BEAT AARON RODGERS: Bring extra coverage back deep, force him to throw underneath. Aaron does not want to throw underneath, so he will start holding the ball for 8.5+ seconds and getting sacked. Occasionally he will try to force it into coverage.

Didn't like the run call from at the one - BEFORE the play was run. Detroits d-line although overrated in my mind, does have an advantage over our o-line in strength. Given that you need an elusive runner and that's not Lacy's strength. Just what I feared would happen happened.

Rodgers decision making has been suspect so far. Could have a number of shorter plays to keep drives going or could have run himself, but threw errant passes. Too many three and outs.

Tough to win when the offense gives up more points than they score.

I think that this defense is "good enough", but the stats won't show it if the offense only plays well 2 quarters out of every 12.

The only "sure" wins I see are Minnesota twice, Tampa Bay, and Dolphins.

That brings them to five. I think they'll win 3 more homes games, which brings them to 8. So, 8-8 seems a minimum.

So many questions.

What happened to Rodgers now having Lacy was going to open up so much... keep defenses honest?

What happened to this being the best oline in years, coupled with the best/deepest backfield in years?

Is it just the playcalling? It all just looks sooo vanilla, no creativity.

Do we really miss James Jones and Finley THAT much?

Is that hot Olivia Munn action messing with QB 1s onfield performance? Because he certainly has not looked like the best QB on the planet this year, not even top 5.

I still have faith, just a lot of questions too.

And WR separation, where is it? Detroit had dudes starting in the secondary that were working at McDonald's earlier in the week. agreed on pretty much everything here by Nagler. we didn't get beat physically. we were outcoached and gave away 7 points early.

how we do not throw the ball more early is a clear indictment of MM. i honestly just don't think he's a very bright coach. he continues to pound the ball for the sake of "establishing it" - whatever that means, instead of actually game planning to the opponent's weakness - which was as obvious as it gets.

Oh and also, genius, when that toss play only works 1 time out of the first 6, don't run it again.

someone tell Mike he's run the same plays for the last 5 years and everyone knows his tendencies. where is a shovel pass. where are the screens. where are the bubble screens. why not throw in a few max protect calls 4 or 5 times a game. why not actually plan to throw to the rb's more out of the backfield to loosen up the LB's.

ugh, just madness to see the same calls over and over.

all that being said, 12 isn't playing well at all.

Kudos to the D today. they were amazing, even after that horrid PI call on Tramon. too bad it was wasted.

The disconcerting thing so far is in two of the three games the Packers have been totally out played. They look like a bottom third in the league team.

ARod in his presser indicated the two-deep safeties look caused GB problems. Haven't we seen this in the past? Then he said the running game has not done it's job. He also seemed to indicate the Pack didn't make the proper adjustments. Doesn't he have the freedom to change calls at the line?

Seems there's a little dissension between MM and ARod in the play-calling and between ARod and the o-line/RB's in the run game.

It would be very interesting to me to know how many of the play calls were run as MM called versus how many Rodgers changed at the line. Something's not working there.

i was thinking the same thing all evening mojo. i listened to both the green and gold post-game show and pack attack and most of the callers were getting on mccarthy's play calling, but doesn't rodgers have the freedom to check out of those plays and call audibles? i know we will never know but it would be interesting to find out how many plays that are run are mccarthy's and how many are changed at the line

the offense today regressed from last week. Their defense or our offense not executing? Hard to say right now. Some of the former but more of the latter I think. We need to have much better run blocking, even against a top tier run D. We've not done much for 3 weeks now. It would sure help out the offense if we had just a threat of run game. BTW, Starks was hot and should have had more carries.

It all comes down to the play of Aaron Rodgers. Sadly, to me it looks like his priorities on the field of play are
1. Don't throw a picks that hurt my permanent QB Rating. 2. Don't get concussed.
3. Winning the football game.

Matt Stafford, by and large, sucks. But all that guy cared about today was winning. Can't say that about QB #1. The dude clearly has other things on his mind.

Let's see a 36- 16 drubbing at Seattle, had too comeback from 21 - 3 at home against the Jets, only 7 points against a depleted secondary in Detroit. And a road game against the Bears, doesn't look good.
1. Rodgers is playing scared.
2. No creativity on offense.
3. Play calling is poor. A running play in your own end zone really.
4. The pitch out got 0 or a loss almost every time.
5. I'd like to see Janis activated, can't be worse than Boykins
6. Defense is in the back field before Lacy even gets started.
7. Bring back the screen play please.

If we are back to living and dying with Aaron Rodgers, then the Pack have a very bright future this year.

Great to see Peppers causing havoc. That contract by Ted was a stroke of genius.

Clay is seemingly made of balsa wood and that makes me sad.

Go Pack.

I've shit on you before, Cow. But this is spot on.

MM's play calling is beyond awful. I think I called roughly a dozen offensive plays pre-snap. And I don't know shit.

No creativity or surprise on offense. As I've said before, I'd hate to be Mrs. McCarthy....

I'm not any smarter than the rest of you buy two things I did this year: look at what the packers needs were pre draft and watch the pre-season games.

1. After the pre season I thought the team lacked play makers, I thought the coaching schemes were horrid, play calling abysmal and overall assessed this team as not being overly talented.
The QB can't throw effectively if the O line is sub par, ditto the run blocking game.
The Defensive line can't pass rush effectively and tackling is an issue. Undrafteds and late round picks were there for the picking, 31 other teams saw something Ted did not.

I said before the first game the Pack would go 1-5 and disappoint the fans. Were 1-2, the bears are next then the Vikes and watch out, Bridgewater is the real deal, can run and pass just what the Vikes wanted. He should be running on all cynlinders by the time we play them so it does not get any easier.

Sometimes COW makes good observations. Have to agree with Point Packer that Cow's points are well taken. Arod is correct not to trust his offensive line and blocking TEs. I had hoped that Bakhtiari (who actually wasn't too bad today) would make a jump in his 2nd year. He hasn't yet. Saw a lot more trouble coming up the middle today. The TEs really whiff sometimes. Very disappointed that Janis and Pennel were inactive, but it does seem appropriate to admit that the defense did not need Pennel much today. Detroit's rushing stats aren't too impressive, but they seemed to always get what they needed when they ran.

No creativity at all in the play calling. No adjustments on either side of the ball. No screens, no motion to create match ups EVER. Shotgun hurry up dome offense all the time ain't working. And please trying to establish the run from the shotgun... It's crap!
Mac Monkey and Capers must go! Other teams do more with less. It's a broken record with this team.

Nagler has made this point in the past and I really havent seen any change over the past season or two, but this offense relies so much on making the spectacular play or the big play to have success. How many times does Nelson need to bail everyone out by making a spectacular catch to keep things moving?

Obviously its a little different because the WR+TE group is far less proven than in 2011 for example, but there is still more talent on this offense than 90% of the teams in football. It just gets aggravating seeing Rodgers go for the low-percentage deep pass to Nelson when he can dump it off and just move the chains. Not saying that this was a major problem today specifically, but just an observation in general.

I'm not worried yet, because this team has a history of starting slow under McCarthy (which is baffling considering how long he has been coaching this team that things dont change), but they always pick it up after a few games under their belt. Still, next week against Chicago is a big one.

"How this team looks today will bare little resemblance to how it looks in November and December."

Yep. No worries.

If there is a dysfunction between AR & MM, somebody named Thompson or Murphy better get that fixed.

MM and his team are not on the same page.

Just a putrid Offense plan and effort.

I agree with the poster other teams are getting more with less talent. That's a coaching issue.

Would like to see MM play calling duties handed to someone else. (Who?) It's clear Mike does not "feel" or alter whatever plan his team has drafted.

Maybe we wouldn't see the bonehead on sides kick, run out my own end zone, not throw to one side of the field kind of crap that the fans endure every season with MM.

Go Pack

We all knew this was a brutal 1st 4 games. This team is notorious for starting slow, I don't know why. They will beat the Bears and be 2-2 after next week. IMO, that's what I was hoping for. Wait till Dec., when the chips are down. Every year its the same thing on Packer blogs. I'd bet you could go back over the last 3 years and not even tell what season it is.

Rodgers doesn't suck. He's just not playing to his ability. An average Rodgers is still a Top 10 QB. He'll get it together like he always does

Wilson
Brees (same record as Packers)
Cutler
Luck
Ryan
Rivers
And P.Manning areplaying damn good football.

Don't let Foles stats fool you. He's playing sh*tty, but he's lucky enough to be able to get the "big play" a couple times a game. Kap is looking horrible. Cam Newton...seriously? Dalton has done very little. Stafford is nothing special. Who wouldn't look good tossing the ball up to Calvin Johnson? Big Ben is decent at the moment. Nothing spectacular. Brady isn't doing ANYTHING! Geno Smith is lookin' better than Tom Brady at the moment.

So what's that? 7 QBs that are playing damn good AS OF RIGHT NOW while Aaron Rodgers is playing average and is still in Top 10.

Rookies are going to make a few rookie mistakes. Chewing them out on the field isn't going to help the "team". I'd like to see Daniels have a little "talk" with Rodgers.

I am starting to feel like we aren't giving a depleted Lions secondary and their defensive front enough credit the played an outstanding game.
Lacy NEVER puts the ball on the ground and getting at him early and often shows that we are a pass first offense. We will have more success establishing the passing game and then running off that. We have to spread teams out and find quick outs to receivers in the flat.
Was this Rodgers way of showing everyone that Lacy isn't the man you thought he was?

When the biggest off-season story line to improve the team, outside of the Peppers signing, is your notoriously "soft" team participating in yoga one should not be surprised by a 1-2 start.

The fact is this team lacks talent. The key to being able to employ a "draft and develop" philosophy is to actually be able to draft talented players, something management has struggled with the past few years. Toss in a leaderless locker room, and unoriginal play calling, and you have yourself an 8-8 team.

p.s. it's interested Nagler said, "Neal played a hell of a game", when PPF actually graded him out as a -2.6, the lowest grade on the entire D?!

For God's Sake...chill.

"D" looking better than anyone expected. Offense will get on track. It will.

Aaron's right...to go 12-4 or 11-5, you have to lose 4 or 5 games...it's gonna happen. I don't see another loss til week 8.

49's are 1-2....Saints are 1-2...Seahawks should be 1-2...we may not be a SB team, but we'll win our share.

Patience, my friends, patience.
