Gut Reactions: 2014 Week Seven vs The Panthers

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers' win over the Panthers.

  • This felt like 1996. Just domination of an inferior opponent.
  • Aaron Rodgers could do just about whatever he wanted all day long.
  • Randall Cobb is making so much money.
  • Speaking of wide receivers and money - Jordy Nelson got a new contract, and he's STILL underpaid. How many other top WRs do you see 30 yards down field still blocking? He's a special football player.
  • The offensive line played extremely well today. Great job across the board.
  • On the flip side, it's a pleasant surprise to see the defense playing on the other team's side of the line of scrimmage in short yardage situations for a change.
  • That said, still too many diving tackle attempts where guys aren't seeing what they're trying to hit. Forget the kill shot. Just wrap up the ball carrier.
  • Mike, can we please stop trying to get outside on 3rd and 1? You have Eddie Lacy. Use him.
  • Add Davante Adams to the list of WR finds for Ted Thompson.
  • Great job by AJ Hawk adjusting the defensive line on an early 3rd and short. He saw the motion and knew an adjustment needed to be made. Packers defense held.
  • The Packers had 21 points before the Panthers got a first down.
  • Not sure why it took being down big for the Panthers to start targeting Greg Olsen, but I'm glad they did.
  • Jeff Triplette is a joke.
  • Clay Matthews showed up today. Nice to see after the disappearing act last week. Interesting that the Panthers never really targeted him with the read option the way many thought they would.
  • 5-2 feels pretty good.
  • Go Pack.

.speaking about Jordy blocking downfield how about Cobb pancaking his guy on Starks TD run.

Nitpick-early on the punt returners cost about 25-30
yrds in field position not running up and fair catching the ball.

Great game plan today. Short passes early to open things up and then spread the ball around at all levels of the field.

I heard there was some sort of altercation in the Bares locker room after the game. Raised voices, people pulled away and restrained.

Here's to being able to say "sorry ass Saints" next week too. What do you think? Does this make the Saints more or less dangerous next week? It will be important to really bring the pass rush. First game in a while that they're playing against a guy who'll stay in the pocket.

I believe they are perfect at home and winless on the road. Thing is, I thought that Packers would win the last two weeks, but I didn't expect them to blow the opposition out of the water. The Dolphins clubbed the Bears this week, and Carolina put up 37 points on a good Cincy defense last week. So I'm just wondering, are the Packers better than I thought, or have they just matched up well against these teams?

- It might be written into McCarthy's contract to throw one useless red flag per game.
- Hope starks is OK
- Can we quit crying for bostick to get reps now? Said he would get them once we started blowing teams away.....bam!!!
- Clays stat line won't do much for him today.....but that guy was defensive MVP today. Must have had a chip on his shoulder. Still want to move him inside?
- Every criticism I've heard about this player or this team this year seems to negate itself after one more week. What else is there to complain about people? Just enjoy the show.
- Rodgers on fire = unbeatable. 154 passer rating? How does he keep doing this?

Easy on Bostick. So he had 1 drop. When's the last time he received meaningful snaps? Let him get back in the groove of things. We have no reason to rush him back into a starting role. Quarless is holding things down and R. Rodgers is satisfying.

As far as Clay, I think I can speak for all (who wanted Clay at MLB) when I say if we had known Brad Jones WOULDN'T be the starter or have majority of the snaps + Lattimore and Barrington would play we wouldn't have wanted the move.

I was listening to Wayne and larry and they said Bostic has problem mentally grasping the game. He even admitted it himself.

To clarify....I wasn't ripping on bostick. I think he will be a pretty awesome receiving threat. Just everyone around here was crying for reps. His will come.

Keep up the negativity cow it's working this year so far. Keep up the good work!!! Got to love a wr playing like he needs to earn his contract, after getting paid. Team seems to get better every week, hopefully the trend continues.

Would have been nice if New Orleans could have hung on. You just knew they'd blow that lead. Orton got the job done - not that Minnesota matters

No (or almost no) read option! How does Carolina not go after us like crazy with our defense's Achilles heal???

We beat a team with a winning record!

Please remove the stretch/sweep/toss out of shotgun... Please!

Thank you, Clay, for not over pursuing and giving a ton of room to run today.

Thank you, Cam, for outright sucking today!

I love doing a shot of fireball for every touchdown!

I love Mike Shula. No read options all game after Tannehill burned us last week, and he never really discovered that Aj Hawk couldn't cover Olsen.

Two things I really hate: running out of the shotgun w/ Eddie Lacy and running out of the shotgun on 3rd and 1. There's just no reason for it. And I'd also like to see us run more routes into the middle of the field. There was a play on third down early in the game where Carolina just completely left the middle of the field wide open and we went 4 wide. Instead of having a single route probe the middle, we ran that pick play for Jordy and it failed.

"The Packers had 21 points before the Panthers had a first down." -- That takes "read option" out of the playbook for the day.

"Jeff triplette is a joke". That was a shameful call on Mathews. The man has "replacement referee" written all over him.

I thought it was a make-up call for tossing Kuechly out of the game. The game was over by that time for neither mattered much.

Go Full-Time Refs!

There was a PI call on Williams that was ridiculous too, but hey, what do we have to complain about??

Most complete game of the year...and only going to get better. I'm drinking the Kool Ade!!

I think we need to start discussing home field advantage.

It's about that time....

- I believe it was LeRoy Butler who said that this Defense would start clicking around this week and he is spot on. I still don't think we've seen the best of our Defense OR Offense yet (yes, Rodgers spoils us rotten.)

- Maybe I wasn't pay too close attention but did Barrington get the start over Lattimore and Jones? If so, that says A LOT about Jones ability (or...you know...)

- My boy Richardson finally got some meaningful snaps and he made stop and nice wrap up tackles (which seems like only a bit over a handful of players can pull off on this roster.)

- I expected the pass defense to be superb, but the run defense really stood out to me.

- Nick...Nick...Nick. Wooo! (Ric Flari's voice) feels good to see him be consistent and tally up sacks.

- Bet money HHCD is Morgan Burnett's BFF. This is a different #42.

- Casey's play recognition is off the charts.

- Hyde probably had his best game as a Safety.

- Again, Davante Adams is going to be the TRUTH! Dude is just so smooth. From running the route to catch the ball to Running after the catch.

- Cobb isn't going anywhere.

- My mind is all over the place at the moment. I'll makes some more points later on.

Today Richard Rodgers made some really good blocks. He is a big body and his blocking ability really helped today.

I expect he'll turn into at the very least a decent blocker, given some time and instruction. He's been a disaster until today. Hopefully, this is the beginning of him turning that around.

He got yanked around so much at Cal. I think a year in the weight room will do him a world of good. I'm bullish on Rodgers in the long run (both of them).

I'm certain I read somewhere that the Packers were starting the hard part of their schedule. If so, they got off to a fair start with it. Was it 35-3 when McCarthy started emptying the bench? Not a bad start, I'd say.

Just great to see them play to their potential. Perry, Pennell Lattimore, Dix, Richardson Hyde Hayward, House.... Nice. Lacy could have had some really long runs. Only negative was Bostic drop and no Janis. Did Elliot play?

Mike Pennel is going to be a force, his college coach said a player his size with his speed comes around once in a lifetime.keep an eye on him.the D line is starting to come together, Capers seems to have his rotations working well.

OK we can go home now. Nothing to see here but total domination by the green and gold. The NFC playoffs may just go through GB.

Only comment. Saw Pennel (long camera shot) for the first time. He is not a football player, he's a planet, slightly smaller than Pluto.

I think Mathews was having fun yesterday. Would love to see him and Peppers line up in the middle and let the big guys charge from the ends just for the fun of it once.

Reeeely nice to see the defense start to come together. IMHO Ha Ha is the single biggest factor. Pretty obvious Burnett is better near the box... he finally has the luxury of not worrying about deep coverage. C-Dix is the best tackling safety they have had in.... well, a long while. That just allows Capers to do so many more things. Of course Peppers is playing at a high level and letting Perry just pin his ears back and go is a bonus. Another unsung plus is the solid play of Guion and Pennel. They make our mediocre inside backers seem better than they are. Now they've been relatively healthy, and if there are no long term injuries, this defense should get better every week.
