Gut Reactions: 2014 Week One vs The Seahawks

Aaron's Gut Reactions from the Packers' loss to the Seahawks.

  • Well shit.
  • Meet the new Packers defense, same as the old Packers defense.
  • Have the Packers called Eric Winston yet?
  • The offense goes to the no huddle and marches down the field for a score...in the 4th quarter. After trailing by three scores. Was that the game plan?
  • Not to be outdone, the defense, after said scoring drive to pull things within two scores, promptly gives up a long scoring drive.
  • Yup. They're in midseason form.
  • Sherrod was ok in the first half. He was roadkill in the second half.
  • Corey Linsley held up well.
  • Letroy Guion did not.
  • Does Ted swallow his pride and call Eric Winston if Bulaga's injury is serious? The season could very well hang in the balance with that decision.
  • Love that it took until the 4th quarter to see a screen pass.
  • Tramon Williams is one of the few Packers who came to play tonight.
  • The Seahawks did a great job of using Clay Matthews' aggressiveness against him.
  • Where was the "lightning quick" no huddle?
  • I hated that Rodgers wouldn't even look Richard Sherman's way, and it was clearly by design. I thought McCarthy didn't play scared? They were clearly scared of Richard Sherman. Once Seattle knew the Packers weren't going to throw that way, they rolled coverage toward Maxwell. Couple that with their inside-outside pursuit and, well, it was all over.
  • Mike Daniels wasn't great.
  • Brad Jones was an absolute embarassment.
  • Eddie Lacy suffered a concussion.
  • Time to regroup and get ready for the Jets.
  • The next 10 days are going to suck.
  • Go Pack.

Well, for the most part they were who we thought they were: pass rush and secondary seemed improved; run D is a real concern and Brad Jones is a liability.

To win, this team needs Rodgers to play well, and he didn't tonight. At least not until the game was out of hand.

There were some dropped INTs tonight. Things could have gone very much better.

The D got some key stops, but the last one was killed by that back breaking penalty on Brad Jones.

How many KOs did we get back to the 20? One? ST were pretty abysmal. Running into the kicker? Shanked punts?

We've all known that Slocum doesn't belong in the NFL and that Dom doesn't have it anymore. We also know there is no accountability.

That stuff didn't just happen today. It's been a problem.

I think you should blame the packers defense for all of the packers' offense 3rd and longs.

When you're down by 19 in the 4th quarter, it's called Garbage Time. The packers 4th quarter TD was a garbage TD. They weren't playing the 2013 Dallas cowboys with the worst defense in the history of the nfl.

Not a good reason. He left two big first downs on the field, and possibly a TD. And it wasn't like he would have had to bulldoze to get them. Just run three yards and slide.

Agreed Idiot, ARod just made some bad decisions. Not a good game from 12.

And to all of those who thought Barclay was JAG, look at the drop-off with Sherrod in the game. It's not just rust, he's too top heavy to block speed-guys around the edge. I don't see that changing.

The D looked mostly decent to me in the first half, but by the second reverted to last seasons form. Nothing fancy by Seattle, but it worked against some crappy tackling. Looks like there's plenty to "clean-up" for next weeks game.

Daniel's has not proved that he can hold up against the run. Neither has Datone. GB might have to see what Peppers can do as a starting DE. Very surprised Pennel was inactive. Wanted to see what he could do in garbage time after Guion (at best up and down) and Boyd (who I thought got pushed around too much) were less than effective. Can't use Peppers as a situational pass rusher when down and distance is unfavorable and when you are behind. No mention of Burnett - I thought he looked pretty bad all game. Hyde and Dix, anyone? Brad Jones must have something incriminating on the coaching staff. Hope Bulaga and Lacey can play against the Jets. Sherrod looked okay for a while, but once the pack got behind and those speed rushers could take off, he really struggled.

Brad Jones couldn't get off blocks, and when he did he couldn't make a play. He was horrible.

There were two times ARod could have run for a first, but for some reason decided to throw with negative results. On the first one the game was still close. Very odd. Not Rodgers best game.

They obviously need help up the middle on D. And speaking of which, this D looks exactly the same as last years. Where was this exotic scheme that was going to change everything?

Buluga out, Lacy concussed. Team was outclassed. Now and extra three days to think about it.

12 had an awful night. Must have been memories from the 8 sack game last time.

I thought the O line and Linsey played well....until Sherrod came in. Surprised there wasn't ant TE or FB help.

TED, need a back up O lineman like yesterday.

Agree, we were all waiting for the quick, no huddle attack. I guess the Packers are saving that?

Duke's gut reactions:

-Where was the play action? Once in the 4th quarter for a TD.
-Nobody on the Packers was a playmaker today.
S-pecial Teams debut: KR to the 12yard line. Called punt block at mid field lead to running into punter, 12men on the field burning a timeout, another return to the 12...Mid season form indeed, SLOCUM
-Panicked on the 4th and 5 go for it call/no confidence in Def
-Rodgers not elite sharp tonight
-Missed Tackles
-Few holes opened in run game
-29 points given up through 3 quarter
-3 turnovers left on the field, no plays made! 36 and 21 are missed..
-#42 covering #11 in the slot...REALLY!!
-Eddie Lacy has to make at least 3 guys miss before he gets back to the line, even last year. perspective as to how good he is but tonight he needed to just hit the hole as #44 did
-Speaking of #44, good mintues
-Missed Tackles
-No huddle was slow
-Brad Jones is TRRRRRRRRRBLe, he and AJ cant cover, stiff as HELL in hips in coverage!!
-Last but not least, Dom's defense, style, culture, persona , entire existence has no place in today's NFL.

The missed tackles are what really convinces me that the problem on defense is coaching. It's been going on for 3 years and they can't get it corrected.

Really good defenses, like Seattle, invariably tackle well. Maybe the Packers staff is too busy working on complicated and exotic schemes and not spending enough time on fundamentals.

My favorite Packer DC of recent vintage was Jim Bates. He kept things simple but emphasized fundamentals and intensity. Give me that over a guy that is constantly tinkering with the Xs and Os any day of the week.

Those perfectly timed back breaking penalties follow this team like those ugly fluke plays do.

Looks like Guion isn't gonna get it done at nose. Would Pickett be any better or worse?

I criticize this team for going into lulls, even when we win. This is why. 4 quarters of lull.

Are we still losing 1 player for the year per week?

On the bright side, this is nothing new. Mike's teams are never ready to play until at least week 5 or 6.

September 04, 2014 at 11:36 pm

I honestly don't really understand how fans can be so upset with the bulk of the play today. The game came down to killer penalties, a fluke turnover and a crushing injury. We had to be perfect (and then some) in order to win this game and if we weren't going to catch the breaks, there was no way we could win.

The defense played much better than we have seen them play in the past. I thought the holding calls were a little soft and they negated some huge stops by the defense. The dropped INTs were pretty maddening but I'll take it over blown coverages. Also, Percy Harvin is a nightmare and it's a shame we have to play them when hes healthy.

The offense moved the ball pretty well at times. Pass protection was fantastic until Bulaga went down. Aaron airmailing that pass when he could have run for the 1st down was tragic. We could have easily scored there and he forced our defense to run 8 more plays.

Ultimately, It's always about health with this team. It feels cheap saying that, but how can you argue otherwise? That's what is so upsetting for me. I thought a lot of our play tonight was encouraging until bulaga left the game. We were keeping pace in the toughest game the NFL has to offer - which should bode well for us going forward - but how can any of us shake the feeling that it's just gonna be another season where half of our payroll ends up on IR?

Having said that, special teams was an absolute nightmare. More than half of the returns didn't make it past the twenty and the running into the kicker bullshit was so incredibly fucking stupid. Unforgivable.

Looking for a bright spot in a long, dark night: safety play is definitely improved over last year. As noted, Linsley did well. Mathews' thumb is alright. Tramon is a baller. Peppers can still make some plays. Cobb is fully healthy again. Nelson is going to make a lot of catches this year. Lattimore is going to get an opportunity. The opponents get easier after this.

Don't worry guys. The Packers offense will whip up on some piss poor defense in the coming weeks and you'll start thinking Super Bowl again. You'll start believing McCarthy when he says he's got things tuned around.

Aaron Rodgers is not better than Wilson or Kapernick. He's been outplayed too many times. It's all on film. He even got outplayed by Wilson when Wilson was a rookie in 2012.

Rodgers was facing the Seahawk & 49er defense--talented units with good coaching. Wilson and Kaepernick were playing the Packers defense that doesn't have nearly the same level of talent or coaching. Comparing their play is an exercise in futility. It's like comparing the stats of a Triple A baseball player to a major leaguer.

Maybe you should stick to your own thoughts and avoid criticizing the positions you assign to others. You can start by putting your arms around the concept that good defenses are harder to defeat than bad ones. That's a pretty simple concept but one that seems to elude you.

Rodgers is one of the elite QBs in the game. That doesn't mean he's perfect. He sure wasn't yesterday. But he's not the problem on this team. That much is plainly obvious.

It is not that we lost. I had predicted a loss. That team in that stadium is the toughest thing in the NFL right now. We would've needed to be perfect and capitalized on mistakes in order to eek out a victory against Seattle last night. Instead we saw AR acting as if he was still suffering shell-shock from 2012. We saw Lacy needing to break 3 tackles just to get back to the LOS. We saw stupid penalties allowing extended drives by seattle.

by week 16 we will see our team with a winning record and will have mostly forgotten about this loss. The fact is though that if we want to have a chance at the Super Bowl, we will see Seattle and San Fran in the playoffs. We do not have a team (coaching, offense, defense, ST) that can match up with either of those clubs.

This sucks...

and I'll feel better after the weekend.

Aaron Rodgers has to scramble. With this OL he can't let the defense get complacent. His scrambling will make defenses hesitate.

With the Packers lack of play action, this is the only thing keeping the D on their toes.

My day after gut reactions..

Way to many mistakes. You can't have this many mistakes to beat one of the best teams in the league, in the toughest place in the league to play.

Brad Jones, possibly had about as bad of a day as you can as a LB. He dropped the interception which Sam Shields made a great play on the ball to knock it up in the air. After he drops that ball what happens. There is a penalty on Daniels on the Punt which gives Seattle a first down which then they get a field goal. They were chasing those 3 points the rest of the game.
Then after that Jones has 2 - 3rd down holding penalty's. Which extended the drives. The one that killed the most was the last one where the Offense just went down and scored, The Seahawks defense was gassed and would have had to go right back onto the field with 8 minutes left. Packers were down by 13 then. They could have went down and scored another TD, which would have put it within 6. There is a small chance that they could have pulled it out. But still a chance. Brad Jones all but destroyed that chance.

If it were up to me I would bench Jones and use a combination of Barrington and Lattimore.

The offense just looked lost out there until they finally hurried it up. Were was this uptempo offense we were all told to expect? When they finally did it they drove right down and scored a TD.

Lacy started out really well. Then he got hesitant and started to try and run outside. At that moment I said they needed a change of pace. Starks did pretty well but I wanted to see them bring in Harris then. His speed would have put pressure on the Seahawks defense. He also hits the hole a lot harder then Lacy and Starks.

I don't know what it was but it feels like offensively they played scared. The final drive for TD was really good.

Positives....
Corey Linsley played really well. I don't think Tretter will have a starting job when he comes back.

I know Clinton-Dix missed some tackles and was far from perfect, but he was the only safety that actually made a play on the ball. I wish he would have intercepted the ball, but he showed he can get into position to make the play. He also showed his speed in coming up and making tackles. I like the potential in him I saw.

Not a great start to the season, but this isn't the first time they lost the season opening. Have 15 more games to play...

This defense will never get any better unless Dum Capers decides to retire. All gimmicks that don't work because every OC in the league has seen them since 1990. Even Dick Jauron, Dum's mentor, is having trouble running this obsolete stuff in Pittsburgh.

Does any of this matter? You win with defense and this defense is god awful. They gave up 36 easy points. Ya stupid penalties and some dumb ass moves. The problem is mental, to stupid to learn and not talented to play in the NFL. That is the price you pay for late round draft picks.
Some of our starters are third string or not able to make a lot of other teams. It is what it is.
