Gut Reactions: 2014 Regular Season Week 2

Aaron's Gut Reactions to the Packers' win over the Jets.

  • Imagine how dangerous this team will be when they get out of their own damn way?
  • After some real struggles early, Derek Sherrod was serviceable for most of the rest of the game.
  • It sure seems Davon House and Davante Adams have moved ahead of Casey Hayward and Jarrett Boykin.
  • Eddie Lacy simply can not be the forgotten man for so long to start a football game.
  • Welcome back to the right side of the football field Jordy Nelson.
  • That first half was brutal to watch - but man, if you're on Twitter, you saw "fans" opining that this was the worst defense in Packers history. Come on folks. Let me introduce you to the teams from the 70s and 80s.
  • That said, man the Packers defense looked bad for much of the game.
  • How many times does Clay Matthews have to get sucked-in down the line of scrimmage before he thinks "Wait, wait, wait...maybe they want me to do this!"
  • Mike Daniels did great work with that swim move.
  • It's not a Packers game until Mike McCarthy challenges a play and makes you throw stuff and use bad words.
  • Rex got impatient at the end of the first half and brought a big blitz that burned him. That was the big slant play to Adams. That, to me, was the turning point of the game.
  • I have to go work. I'll try to have more thoughts tonight/tomorow.

Lots to be concerned about, especially on D, but right now I'm going to celebrate this gritty win.

Side note: MM can't see good replays on the jumbotron. Isn't the bad challenge on whoever is watching replays in the booth?

I doubt he's hurt. He just doesn't have a good enough burst OR the O-Line needs to hold their block(s) for just a tad bit longer. I'd love to see what Starks and Harris could do with those holes Lacy's getting.

Mike Daniels is what changed the Defense. That guy is the truth.

Duke's gut reactions:

-Great start offense. : /
-Great start Defense. : /
-Some days Arodge makes Jordy, today Jordy made Arodge
-1st half defense was lost vs another mobile QB
-Only first down Rodgers and Tater could draw up in the first 30 minutes was a hard count...
-3rd and goal from the 6, called run??? How about call that on 2nd and goal from the 6 and then on 3rd down Jordy and Cobb may have figured our who's catching the bubble screen and who's blocking..
-Why call an onside kick with 5 left in the 1sr half after your first defensive stop of the game???
-Some much needed Life shown before half.
-Mashed Potato Mike with a terrible challenge after 1,000,000 looks at it, still potched it!!!
-Great 3rd quarter...make that 2nd half defense.
-Great play call on 3rd and goal roll out TD to Cobb
-Took 6 quarters but defense is awake!
-Aj's helmet was very active today!!
-Resolve trumps early incompetence!

Not sure I agree with the D looking bad most of the game. First 1 1/2 quarters...no doubt. 2nd half was much improved. Run defense was much improved and they got some pressure. Step in the right direction. Offense still looks a step slow.

D. Adams is going to be a big problem for teams third CB. Third and one with two down line men is tough to understand.
The challenge, especially after the long time out is a head scratcher.
Hawk simply is not powerful enough.

Probably 90% of "fans" on Twitter weren't alive to remember to Packers of the 70's and 80's...

Right now our defense is average when playing well and awful when not playing well. Matthews does need to stop getting sucked in and hold some outside contain. Not a single linebacker with a good game.

- A win is a win. And I feel like hard fought, overcoming adversity type wins do more for a team that blow outs.

- Geno Smith might be halfway descent after all.

- What the hell was that Vick play? So stupid.

- I'm liking HaHa over Pryor a lot more after today (as someone who really wanted Pryor heading into the draft).

- Run D really seemed to stiffen up after the first quarter or so.

- Lions and Vikes came crashing back down to earth (shocker) and Seattle lost (and Saints are 0-2). Maybe the season isn't quite over yet.

PS: That was a lateral.

Yeah, and Mike Carey's explanation was weird too. He spent several minutes explaining why it was a backward pass, and then he said, "but they'll see the arm moving forward and just call it incomplete regardless." What??

Something about the arm moving forward takes precedence over whether or not the ball traveled backwards. Seems like nonsense to me.

So, if a QB had his back to the line of scrimmage and threw the ball directly backwards while getting sacked, that'd just be an incomplete pass?

It sounded to me like he thought it was actually a backward pass but he predicted a BS call from the refs. If that's the case, what a crock...

In this case the throwing direction and subsequent flight of the ball was affected by the contact to the body of the QB making the release point a mute point as related to where the ball hits the turf. Backward or forward its an incomplete pass. Just had the ref on our JV crew call the same thing tonight. He thought it was just a HS rule but I told him Mike Carey said it was an NFL rule, yesterday. Guess its a rule.

1. The first 25 minutes of this game were BRUTAL to watch. Reminds me of the days of Lindy Infante.

2. Rodgers needs to learn to throw away and check down the damn ball.

3. MM simply CANNOT let Lacy go unused like that. I don't care if the matchup is better throwing the ball. The Jets D was teeing off on the pass.

4. HOW can GB STILL not know how to defend the read option. I'm becoming more and more convinced that our defensive coaches simply suck.

5. There's a lot to complain about. If they don't clean it up, they're not going to beat the two upcoming division foes on the road on the schedule. That said, 2011 is the ONLY time I can ever remember GB looking good in September under MM.

5. All that said - A Win is a Win. GO PACK GO.

- This defense is still a work in progress, but it showed more signs of life than it had previously after a rough start. The pass rush seemed improved, and the run defense held its own.

- Not a great day from Lacy, but I think this Jets defense can do that to any running back.

- Nice ejection by Wilkerson. And smiling about it afterwards? Wow.

- This team will be tested by the offense power of the Lions next week. I'm stocking up on beers for that game.

I swear I saw Rodgers turn to Adams pre-snap and give him a little hand-signal. I think QB1 saw that coming the whole way.

That whole 97-yard drive to end the half was stunning.

Horrible start. Nothing was working. Felt like a major hangover from the Seahawks game.
At about the midpoint of the second quarter it all seemed to turn around. Great effort given in the come back.

Early after game thoughts...
Lacy needs more carries then he got. Starks too. I really liked seeing Harris used in the 3rd down role, as a receiver out of the backfield.
Adams really started to show us why he was a 2nd round pick. He made some really nice catches. Did he replace Boykin as the #2?
House really looked good.
Is Nelson still going to be considered overrated? I hope not.
Good come back win. Shows the team can handle some adversity.

Hyaward was great in 2012. One thing or another has prevented him from being that same player since.

House is a pretty good player, IMO, He's much better suited to replace Tramon, who is in the final year of his contract. So I'm all for getting as much data as possible on House to make the best decision with regards to Williams in 2015

Just stop it.

First, Shields is our best corner, then Tramon and THEN Hayward or House.

Second, House is a much bigger and more physical corner. So if you need to match up on a big receiver who is physical, you put in House. If you need a more atheletic CB with better eyes/nose for the football, you use Hayward.

Hayward is NOT #2 and has not proven that over the last 2+ years.

Watch the tape. As Hank indicated its not 2012. House has had better tape since camp opened. House had a clunker game last year but also had some solid outings and stepped up huge against Crabtree in the playoff game and has since continued ascending. Pretty awesome that both guys have us splitting hairs over who's BETTER. A great problem to have that many good solid corners. If the safety position gels more with every snap and they scrap that 4-3 elephant shit and play the 3-4 like they did in the second half yesterday, they could do some good things

I asked out loud if Datone Jones still played for GB and then watched him whiff on a 3rd down sack on Smith that the Jets then converted.

AJ Hawk is no longer a starting caliber MLB and he has the worst haircut in sports. Still.

That Bear Conte got bulled over by Fred Jackson last week and then had one of the best INTs I've seen in awhile tonight against SF. Our safety play is so uninspiring, again. Burnett is the most overpaid player on this roster, next to Hawk and Brad Jones.

MM coached 6 straight quarters of absolute garbage to start this season before more or less recovering in the 2nd half today.

Both SF and SEA lost tonight and, at this point, I wouldn't bet on the Pack to beat either at home in January.

Run the god damn ball.

I don't recall him missing any tackles which is huge improvement from Jones. He just missed Smith chasing him down on the one play. I didn't see him make any huge plays, but I didn't see him make any glaring mistakes either.

The run defense was much improved from the Seattle game. If it were me i would stick with Lattimore.

Which is 8.2 points higher then Brad Jones against the Seahawks.

Seems like D got a wake up in 2nd period. They better play hard or season is gone.
Questions:
Is Peppers working out so far?
How did the Jets have 2 WR so open in the end zone on the play that got called back?
Seems like lining up 6/7 on the line for pressure might be a good option. They 2/3 could always drop back if no hole opens up.
I can't believe AR held the ball so long to get sacked twice at the end. Those short yarders might not be pretty but it keeps the chains moving.

I think Peppers is working out okay so far. Not dominating, but seems to be holding his own and I expect him to only get better as the season goes along and he gets more comfortable.

Would have really loved for him to come down with that INT yesterday.

4thand1, How does Hawk get credit for 10 tackles? I saw, I think 3. All 3 were at least 4 yr's from the line of scrimmage. If you run & fall on top the pile, is that a tackle?? Maybe he got some when I was pouring the Champagne. If he got credit for 10 tackles, I must of drank a lot of Champagne, & here's another thing. How can anyone make a tackle at the line of scrimmage, if you're playing 6-7 yrd's from the line. I admit to not knowing much, if anything about this defense we're playing. What exactly are we playing? I actually thought we played a Decent, (Not Great), but a Decent Defensive game yesterday, with a few exceptions. LVT

Hawk played the inside run quite well. He had at least one solo tackle where the back gained only 1 yard and some assists for short yardage. In fact, the Jets' longest gain on a run up the middle was for 4 yards (not counting Geno Smith's scramble up the middle off a shotgun formation).

Thegreatreynoldo, Great Handle!! I'll say this. I think A. J. Hawk played better than he normally does. I saw 2 solo tackles. One was a 1 1/2 yr'd gain, & the other was a 4 yr'd gain. I question the 10 tackles. He certainly was in on some tackles, but not the 1st guy there. I will say he played a Decent game as did the whole Defense over-all, & We Won!! We need the Defense to keep improving. LVT

Thanks, LVT. I suppose it is my handle, but really it is a nickname bestowed upon me by my high school teachers. It stuck, and it has been my nickname for 40 years now. My friends from high school would instantly be able to identify me by the handle.

Although Hawk has played better last year and against the Jets, I by no means want to imply that an upgrade at ILB is not needed. He is still a liability in coverage, and still has trouble shedding blocks.

Reading all these posts almost had me convinced that they lost.

Jeez. It's only week 2. Plus they had a 10 day layover from the previous week, so they all were slightly rusty (first snap fumble, Rodgers off on a lot of throws, defense, etc.).

That being said, they've really got to turn it up a notch because they're heading into the teeth of the division part of the schedule now. After weeks 4-5, we'll know a lot more about this team.

I know everyone is happy but still reserved about this victory. But I like our scrappy team better than our prolific offense blowout team. Which team won the super bowl? Coming back from adversity prepares you for close games. We didn't do it last week. we did it this week. Anyone here still want to bitch about in game adjustments?

Also, our D is a work in progress. Don't forget that we gift wrapped the JETS a TD from our offense.
Outside of two big drives from the JETS, the D did adjust. That says a lot. Keep it going please.

Impossible to say. If they're playing the Falcons, do they get down 21-3 in the first place? The Bengals just held the Falcons to 3 points over the first 3+ quarters and the Packers have handled the Falcons in the past. So, sure, why not.

We all like Mathews and he plays with vigor and enthusiasm, no one can doubt that but I've been thinking, the super bowl year, Jenkins chased a lot of QB's right at an unknown quantity named Mathews.
Now teams are running around him or away from him and I think he looks lost at times as to, where the hell am I supposed to be. The problem, he can't be everywhere all the times.
All I know is all the screen plays that were successful for the Jets and Seattle went right at where Perry is supposed to be covering. There is no one covering the back out of the backfield. Its that stupid nickle D that is not working.
