Gut Reactions: 2013 Week 8

Aaron's Gut Reactions from the Packers' win over the Vikings.

  • God I love this team.
  • Can't think of a better way to kiss that dump of a stadium goodbye than by having the Packers score the most points they ever have in the place.
  • Eddie Lacy is a man.
  • David Bakhtiari went into the Metrodome, where some of the best left tackles to play for the Packers have struggled, and basically wiped Jared Allen off the map. That was a hell of a performance from the rookie.
  • Nice to see Jordy Nelson get so much attention on the national broadcast. The guy is so good and goes unnoticed outside Packer fandom. Ted got an amazing steal when he resigned him. Doubt he gets so lucky next time around.
  • Really liked Lattimore's ability to fill and make tackles on Adrian Peterson - but I'm no fan of his jawing at Peterson after plays. As one of my Twitter followers wrote during the game - Don't tug on Superman's cape.
  • That first PI call on Tramon Williams was unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
  • James Starks looked fast as hell on that turf. I love how he sees a hole, plants his foot, and takes off. Guy is decisive and a great compliment to Lacy.
  • Speaking of Lacy, excellent job in pass pro from the rookie tonight. There was one blitz in particular that came from the offense's left side where he was in perfect concert with the rest of the line. Just a great job. And that's what enables McCarthy and Rodgers to keep everything in the playbook open. They know they don't have to worry about missed assignments.
  • Mike Daniels continues to impress. The guys is impressive with his hands and has a sneaky first step. Really enjoying watching him develop.
  • Myles White and Jarrett Boykin were excellent counterparts tonight. One bad drop from White that I can remember, but for the most part really good showing. You can tell Aaron like Boykin and wants to get him involved.
  • Greg Jennings had one catch tonight. That is hilarious.
  • I hate how the defense goes soft at the end, lets the Vikings stroll down the field for an easy score - which gets Rodgers, Lacy and company back on the field after minimal rest, taking more hits. I don't see other teams play this way on defense with a big lead. Just bugs the hell out of me.
  • Josh Sitton, EDS and TJ Lang had a good night inside for the most part. EDS struggled on a few solo blocks, but for the most part was solid as hell on combos and sorting out protections.
  • Speaking of the offensive line, love seeing how much pulling Mike is doing not just of guys on the line but Kuhn and the tight ends as well. Getting big guys out in space, plowing over people. Just love it.
  • And now - it is officially Bear week.
  • Go Pack Go.

The last game he also played really well.

But this was Rodgers at his peak. Just unbelievable accuracy, and he had such a great sense of pressure in this game.

He was perfect.

Some of the passes that Rodgers squeezed into cracks in coverage tonight were just unbelievable. One of the two knocks on #12 that you always hear from #4 partisans is that #12 has always had great receivers. Not this year. #12 is making do with a less than stellar receiving group this year, and he is not missing a beat.

Its hard to double a receiver when he can line up anywhere. Jordy played out of the slot ALOT tonite. Its easy enough when he lines up only on the outside, but he got most of his snaps in the slot tonite. McCarthy did a great job game planning to get Jordy open all over the field.

I think it's scarier now. Opposing teams have no idea how to defend us right now. So many rookies and rotating players makes it very difficult to come up with a suitable scheme.

I agree! McCarthy is at his best when he has to game plan around the backups - i.e. we're not sending 5 receivers running straight down the field on an 11-step dropback every play. This team is built for long sustained drives right now, and opposing defenses haven't even heard the name of the guy who is going to hit them next (Miles White?!?).

When this team gets healthy, they'll stop adhering to fundamentals like they are forced to do now, and they'll go back to holding the ball 8 seconds and passing up open guys to throw deep.

That time of possession helped us ALOT tonight.

I think I read that at one point the Packers offered him $11 million per year, but he turned it down thinking he could get closer to $15 million per year in FA. In the end, I think he only got about $8 million per year from the Vikings, if I remember correctly.

It was one of those under the radar, discussing contract extensions things. Think it said something to the effect, "Packers and Jennings discussing an extension, Packers "reportedly" offered 11 or 12M and Jennings looking for 14 or 15M." It wasn't confirmed by anyone since those are preliminary talks.

Both of Jordy's TD's were both outstanding throws by Rodgers and even better catches by Jordy! Loved how they used Jordy all over the field, not just outside. He was the slot WR on the majority of plays it seemed.

Lacy and Starks is an excellent duo. If the Packers keep running the ball like this they should be the favorite for a berth in the SB. Once everyone is healthy the Pack will take on anyone, anywhere. SF, Sea, NO, I don't care... Bring'em on!!!

Nelson is so underrated. He is truly a #1 WR.
My hope is that when guys come back healthy, they move guys around. When Cobb comes back, play him outside, and inside.
I hope that when the injured players come back they keep moving people around. Keep things less predictable.

Lacy is a beast. He is truly a steal at the end of the 2nd round. To me he is the OROY. How many other rookies can say they have transformed an offense like Lacy has? No one else that I know of.

So the Pack has been playing really good these last few weeks. That is without CM3, Perry, Cobb, James Jones, Jermichael Finley. That is a lot of our top players. Rodgers is playing without 3 of his top 4 offensive threats.
Just a warning, we will be getting back each player (except for Finley probably), so look out to the rest of the NFL.

I love me some Lacy, but I'm curious to know how much of the improvement is due to him, and how much is due to an oline that is really starting to gel. I'm sure it's some of both, but all three RBs have looked pretty good running behind that line.

According to McCarthy a great RB makes the OL great. The OL is playing well, but the Packers had the same pieces, minus Bahktiari. Clearly both are doing their part.

The OL over the first 5 or 6 games was complete garbage.

It's Lacy. He's really hard to deal with over extended carries.

But, the OL has played much, much better over the past 2 games, a little bit in part because McCarthy is calling for less 7 step drops, and Rodgers is getting rid of the ball faster.

I think "complete garbage" is a bit of a stretch. They've had 99+ rushing yards for, what, five weeks in a row, plus holding up well (especially in the interior) in the pass game against some very solid Dlines. But yes, I do think they're starting to get more and more comfortable together as the games go on.

Nelson is one of the best receivers in the league, not just a #1 receiver.

There's no one right now as good at catching the ball on the sideline as Jordy is.

And just catching ability, he's insane.

I'd take Megatron over Nelson, and that's it. Maybe A.J. Green. Right now, I'd also take Fitzgerald, but he's older.

So proud of this team, even though it got sour with 5:30 to go in the 4th quarter. This game was only close because of a bad penalty by Datone Jones and a bad call on Williams

Ran the ball, Rodgers keeping drives alive, the 3rd down and 4th down conversions, time of possession. Dominating.
Brilliance of MM putting Starks in the 3rd quarter, for change of pace. Likely to give Lacy a rest. Little worried about Starks going in after his first carry, I thought he looked hesitant, but he was impressive after that.

Did I say that Rodgers was magnificent? Ok, now that I got the obvious out of the way, he needed to slide on some of his runs(which were well timed and needed). Now, to be more obvious, we can't lose him or it's all over.

Why is anyone surprised how good Jordy is? He's been doing this for years.

Starks looked good in all his carries. What a combo he and Lacy supply. Imagine if Harris was still around.

ST's has to cover better. It's going to bite us if we don't get that fixed.

Nagler did a great job hitting on a lot of the points I was going to make. Didn't hear much from Allen tonight. Also, I too was pissed at the late TD's our D gave up. Would have loved a complete blowout. Still very happy with the win. Now lets kick ass next week and we're in great shape going into the second-half.

I read it was a topic of discussion before the game. Either way its worth remembering what the Defense did when the game actually was in doubt! Capers D gave up only 10 pts till 2 meaningless 4th qtr TD's, when the game was already over. Score was 41-17 and that includes the kickoff return to open the game. So for the 1st 3 qtrs. his D gave up 10 pts that actually mattered!

And don't forget that 1 TD basically came as a result of a horrible pass interference penalty on Tramon Williams. If I remember right it was a 3rd down play that extended the drive.

So the way I look at it, they essentially held them to 3 points.

Pack is looking up at New Orleans and Seattle, and has two losses, as does San Fran. At the end of the day, IF they run the table, at the end of the day, losing to San Fran will hurt more because it is a conference loss, and because it may come into play as a head-to-head tie-breaker. Seattle has the best shot at being the #1 seed, based on remaining schedule (IMHO). The Packers will be fighting it out for the #2 seed with New Orleans and San Fran.

Saints have to play both San Fran and Seattle, as well as Cowboys once and Carolina twice.

San Fran has Carolina, New Orleans, Washington, St. Louis and Seattle in the next five weeks, in that order. That's a rough stretch for them.

Seattle has New Orleans and San Fran back-to-back to start December, coming off of a bye week.

Pete is right. Remember in 2010 (the year after the Saints won the Super Bowl), and even though the Seahawks had a 7-9 record, as division champs they hosted (and beat) the wild card Saints who had something like an 11-5 record. That was the game Marshawn Lynch had like a 200 yard touchdown run where he broke tackles from about 25 defenders and it caused an earthquake and terrorized the west coast or something like that.

I just don't see any of those teams (including GB) winning out. That's a pretty long stretch of games and there are a lot of teams out there that are good enough on any given Sunday. We have as good a chance as anybody at the 1 or 2 seed.

We could really use it too, it'd be good to have a bye after 13 games straight.

I know it's not a conference loss, buy it's still a loss that should be a W. Come seeding time, it surely isn't going to help us, especially if we have a couple more losses.

Lions in Detroit could be bad for us. We still need to get by the Giants in NY. Sure they suck this year but we don't have a very good track record. Dallas in Jerrytown is still on the horizon too.

A smashing victory. This game went just like so many others at the Metrodome. Crazy, unexpected stupid things starting with the kickoff return to START the game!! Damn it Slocum!!

Rodgers incredible but with the exception of special teams this was a great team win. Just a hard physical game that we didn't think they could play starting the season. Now they really are physical more than a finesse team. We can definately compete for another super bowl this season. (healthy and apparently even unhealthy)

Well Nagler, you might be shocked I am more relieved for Jayme. Anyone who's watched these games knows how a sure thing can go bad. We seen it happen with T.J. Rubley and Terrel Buckley in the final minutes of the game. That place is a nightmare to play. Rodgers was 2-3 in that hell hole. Just glad we are all talking about a win today. I just hope none of you guys write about sure things in the future. It made alot of us guys extremely uncomfortable. All is well today!!

We were all cursing Slocum for the opening kick return; we all loved him when Hyde took a punt to the house. He probably has one of the toughest jobs right now with how much turnover there has been on special teams.

it is tough to have to count on backups of backups, and players who would not be on an NFL roster let alone be active if it were not for the injuries. And then he has players who play quite a few snaps as well during regular game, then have to come in and do ST duties. No easy job here...

My Gut Reactions:

Eddie lacy average 3.2 yards per carry tonight, but man did those three yards seem to be good ones. Lacy is hands down our feature back and will remain so for a long time, guy can only get better.

Im not saying these injuries were a good thing, but in the long run they might actually provide great information on our other players. When cobb and jones get back we very well could have the big four again. and yes boykin is part of that, cannot believe the dude was undrafted, just goes to show that measurables arnt everything. That play where he was smart enough to catch it and then dive for the first was a play many veterans wouldnt even have the mind to make.

A.J. hawk wow, this guy has shown new life, and is looking nothing like the linebacker we all wanted cut a few seasons ago, speaking of mlb's lattimore continues to impress me with his atheltic ability.

The packers o-line impressed expecially with the pass protection. I will say this again Baktiari is the future LT. Now everyone take a deep breath and move on.

Overall this team to me appears way more able to compete with the elite teams of the nfc (seahawks, 49'ers) with a running game.

we won't have the big 4 back until very late in the season. hopefully jones will be back in a week or 2. i'm really wondering if any of these tight ends can step up and make a difference. i think finley has played his last game with the packers and it doesn't look like quarless can fill that void right now (or ever). i've heard a few people compare bostick's build to finley's but i'm not sure he has the playmaking ability that jermichael has. i have a feeling that TT will be picking up a TE on day 2 of the draft next year.

I'm thinking TT will continue to add quality players without too much regard for position. He once said "every team is one sprained ankle away from a need at any position anyway."

As much as we'd love to see a TE or a safety early, he just doesn't operate that way. He will not reach. That's why all the draft day trading.

No he won't "reach", but he will move himself into position to draft a need at a point where the pick fits. He's done it repeatedly in the past couple drafts.

It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. It could go in any number of directions.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if he's done for this year. That makes next year a huge question mark.

If he does want to keep playing, does his injury scare off TT? Does it scare off other teams so that TT can re-sign him more cheaply? Does he maybe sign a 1-year deal to prove his health and sign for big money the following year?

My guess is he's done this year. And I think it would be in the best interest of both parties for him to sign another one- or two-year deal. I hope it works out that way. Injury aside, I'm not ready to let him go, and I'm not quite ready to lock him up long-term.

That was as impressive performance by the offense as I can remember. Game planning, play calling, execution were all darn near perfect. (I prefer a clock-eating style as opposed to the quick strike style.)

If they can get most of their pieces back, this can be a VERY, VERY dangerous team come January.

It was a great win for the Packers. I wish our defense at the end of the game would have played until the end of the game. Two garbage TDs by Minnesota at the end made it look like they were in the game. I cannot express how happy I am with David Bahktiari's play at left tackle. He did an amazing job at nullifying the vikings pass rush and in particular, Jared Allen. Great job David and thank you TT for drafting him. It will be very difficult to bench him when Bulaga comes back based on the way he has played for the Packers. How can anyone not like the heart this team has?

i think maybe if i, say, wrote for a well-read packer website, and my name was ... i don't know, zach, or c.d., or brian, or aaron, or jayme (just to pick a few out of the hat) i might possibly think a piece about how adversity, especially w/regard to injuries makes this team so much better. and i think it might focus on how mccarthy and capers are both challenged to resist their tendencies to lean on their qb/passing game and a guy named clay a little too much for the team's overall success.

and, in a totally unrelated related comment, can i just say i'm going to puke the next time i hear someone throw praises on rodgers making due with all the injured receivers and how that's the reason we're doing so well? ok, i get that rodgers is ridiculous, i'm his #24 fan, but in a post-game interview, rodgers himself alluded to the fact that having a LEGITIMATE RUNNING GAME means lots of single coverage and less clogged passing lanes for him and his receivers. that's when he puts on a clinic.

we all know rodgers and company are absurdly talented and disciplined. but the reason we won that game last night, and the reason we have been successful this year is so plain to see. commitment to the running game and good execution reaps so many benefits - keeps the defense honest, which opens up the field for the passing game; makes play-action effective; wears out the opposing defense; gives our defense a rest; frustrates the hell out of douchebags like jared allen; runs down the clock; keeps the ball out of the hands of the opposing offense; makes old people happy.

the opening drive of the 3rd quarter was everything i can hope for from a good team: pound the ball, open up the field for rodgers, a mistake/some adversity (15 yd penalty), overcoming the adversity, draining 8+ minutes off the clock, a touchdown. as larry mccarren said, we PUNCHED THEM IN THE MOUTH.

our defense essentially had a half-hour breather at halftime. that is frickin awesome.

Having too many toys can stifle a child’s creativity. I was also told, as a young boy, to go outside. Play. Run around. Imagine. Put down the toy cars and use your mind. Pretend. Bloom’s Taxonomy of learning demands that in order to develop critical analytical skills you need to move children away from rote memorization and engage them in tasks which require discovery and application of data. Acquisition of basal level skills such memorization have their place. At some point, though, to make the next jump to learning students need to be forced how to use the information to make decisions rather than just memorize the information. By now you’re asking “what is this egghead talking about and how does it relate to my beloved Packers?” Simply put….McCarthy/Rodgers are operating at the highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy right now. I believe this is in large part due to the rash of injuries the offense has faced. I have been a vocal critic of McCarthy and his play designs and lack of imagination and utilization of his personnel (notice I didn’t say play call…i.e. run vs. pass). The previous two games started the trend and last night showed just how creative and effective this offense has become.

Make no mistake about it. Mike McCarthy is not a West Coast Offense disciple. Sure he coached for Hackett and with Gruden…..he does has some of that influence…..but he is no where near the Bill Walsh tree of offense. You want to see WCO? Pop in some Eagles film from the last 15 or so years or watch a Chiefs game now and you’ll see true WCO. Sometimes it isn’t flashy but aesthetics don’t count…..efficiency does. The Packer offense last night was the definition of efficiency. Now it would be easy to say that Lacy has made a difference. No question it has. But the last three games has still shown the Packer offense seeing two high safeties in 3rd down passing situations. It is changing some but not to the degree that you might think. The difference is the Packers utilization of personnel. Last night I witnessed motion by the Z to a hip position by the slot, giving almost a stacked look. I saw bunch formations to go with the regular Trio formation. I saw Jordy play the slot, the X and the Z positions. I saw McCarthy vary the launch point for Rodgers. I witnessed quick slants and hitches. I saw Lacy used as a receiver declare on routes right out to the backfield instead of a simple block, sift, checkdown receiver. The Vikings defense might be bad……OK there’s no “might” about it…..they’re bad. BUT…..they are still an NFL defense with some talent in key positions. The Packer offense directly or indirectly was responsible for 37 points last night in meaningful game time. I don’t care how bad a defense might be. That is impressive on any day. What makes it more impressive is the personnel being used to accomplish it.

I don’t want to see any player get injured and believe me….I’ve seen far too much of it in my time. But as it relates to the Packers, namely McCarthy, the injuries may have been the best thing for McCarthy and his approach to the offense. His “toys” have been taken away and he is now forced to be creative (although these WCO staples have been around for years). No longer can he say “my matchbox cars are faster than yours.” Instead, he’s been handed a rock and been told by his parents to “pretend it’s a car.” He’s adjusted quite well and the Packer offense hasn’t missed a beat. Just ask yourself this question: How many throws traveled 15 yards in the air? What we saw last night was the ball control passing game. When it was 3rd & 6 we saw routes for 8. Jordy’s second TD was a simple slant. There has been more emphasis on the YAC as is customary in the WCO. Being forced to be creative with limited resources leads to a more methodical approach to thinking. In turn, it forces a person to be patient. They are inextricably linked features. This team put up clock eating drives as a result of the patience and yet each drive lead to a total of 37 points. That’s very good, but more importantly, efficient production. The big plays will be there as long as this is the offensive approach moving forward. My biggest fear surrounds the mindset of McCarthy if and when he gets more of his “toys” back in the toy chest. Will he be willing to play with the rock and pretend or pull out the shiny new matchbox car from which he was grounded?

What was up with the ultra-heavy 3rd & 1 formation? I actually like the formation and personnel use…..just not in that situation. Some of my savvy-less football acquaintances immediately smelled that out. In a word…..dumb!

I could easily carp on Capers and the defense for going soft in the 2nd half……..but I won’t. The game was in control. The only thing I didn’t care for was the use of 2 Man. Against a more statue-esque QB such as Peyton Manning I ‘d have no problem but not against a mobile QB like Ponder. The Vikings used a little 2 Man against Mr. Rodgers and each time he was flushed he ran all over their neighborhood. Not a wise move by Capers…..but I’ll let it slide considering the situation.

I’m not a Slocum fan but not because of last night. He’s working with a lot of “green material.” However, he needs to coach better situational football. Jordy on onside return? Good move. Good to see he had them place kick-offs to the deep corners instead of down the middle following the opening return (well, most of the time).

Overall a solid win.

Brilliant, although you have to admit that his parents gave him a rock that looks a heck of a lot like a fast car in Boykin.

PackerBacker....I agree....Boykin is a solid player. I'm not trying to degrade any of the other players. Not many men make it to the professional game let alone make a career of it. But make no mistake about it....these guys would see the field a lot more if they were in the same category as Cobb, Jones, Finley and Nelson. They are playing out of necessity.

love it.

a much clearer and eloquent way of expressing an element of the frustration/excitement transition i've gone through with this team twice in recent history -- in the 2nd half of 2010, and so far this year.

i remember multiple instances of extremely enjoyable, if somewhat embarrassing 'creative' enjoyment during my youth -- i once spent at least a full hour when i was about 10 with a friend, a baseball, and a stopwatch (we had no mits) trading turns throwing the ball as hard as we could directly upward and timing it. that's the more embarassing one. i also remember co-inventing several games/sports at camp, one of which resembled floor hockey but required only 2 brooms and a roll of masking tape. the cool kids sat by and make jokes about how retarded we looked while we had a blast. the next year it was an official camp game.

the point isn't just to illustrate what a 'special' child i was (i can only imagine what anyone watching the ball-straight-up thing would've thought about us) - but to say i identify with the satisfaction that one can gain by doing creative things with limited resources.

the satisfaction in my part was forgetting our baseball mits and using gravity instead to achieve a bit of fun. the satisfaction on mccarthy's part was losing jones, cobb and finley and using a screen to myles white to achieve a first down.

my concern, as you expressed as well, P.O.C., is that when the storm is over, and the power comes back on, mccarthy'll just turn the tv back on and watch the 3-incomplete-passes-and-punt channel again.

let's hope not.

"I witnessed quick slants and hitches."

I've been longing for the slants/hitches to return. I was tickled pink when Rodgers hit Jordy in stride on that second TD. It was beautiful.

"What was up with the ultra-heavy 3rd & 1 formation?"

Agreed here as well. They did it twice with the TE in motion to the running side. The first time I thought, meh worth a shot. The second time I knew it was coming (and I'm no expert, lol). And so did Henderson for the record, who stuffed Lacy.

Excellent post though. You've put what many have been thinking into a clear and concise picture.

last night showed what would and could be possible with this Offense. If all the injured stars were back and healthy, and McCarthy could resist temptation to revert back to his ways, there truly is not a defense on this planet that could stop this offense. Of course that is just my humble opinion.
After being somewhat harsh on McCarthy in the past, I have to admit that he really did a great job yesterday, and the last few weeks in fact. Just looking at Atlanta where there is a similar injury situation, that Offense totally faltered with White and Julio Jones out.
Regardless, this Packers team is insanely talented and fun to watch.

On the 3rd and 1 jumbo package play, I completely agree. Right before the snap I called the play out loud and was less than surprised to see the Queens snuff it out. In situations like that, I'd like to see play action or some creative use of a TE.

That being said, MM called an exquisite game. And we ended up getting a first down on the next play anyway.

PointPacker....agreed. I like the personnel usage. I just didn't like the telegraphed nature of it. Wouldn't mind seeing that more on first down now with play action considering the success of the running game. Andy Reid was/is notorious for using playaction on first down. He believes it has a high percentage of success since it is considered a traditional run down especially when 21 personnel is used.

If you do write here you should put this in a separate column for people to comment on if that's possible. This should not go to waste. Loved the go outside and use your creative mind analogy. So true. That's exactly what MM was forced to do and it's working!!

Beyond that I'm just a husband and father who maintains a connection to this game. I enjoy providing my "2 cents" to this site. I came across it just perusing the internet one day. I have great respect for this game and the men who have played, coached, managed, etc. In my short time on this site I've quickly learned how knowledgeable the football fans of Wisconsin/Green Bay truly are. Fans in the south are renowned for their level of FI (football intelligence)but in my travels and stays I've come across some pretty impressive football acumen in the state of Wisconsin. I'd put them right up there with the southern folks. In my humble opinion it has been my experience that Packer fans, just in general, watch the game with a more critical eye on scheme, technique, personnel, etc. than most others. If I can provide some more insight (the intricacies of the game)based on my breadth of experience I'm more than happy to do so. Granted it's just my opinion and I love the contradicting viewpoints. Like I said....Packer/Wisconsin football fans are a smart bunch.

"I can see you are old school. So am I."

Paul may be old school, you're just old and sexist.

"I am also a big fan of Cow42."

Your non-sense makes some sense now.

"He was the reason I decided to come here."

Here's one of the legendary Cows great predications as it relates to the 2013 Packer season: "Green Bay will start out 0-4". How did that expert analysis play out?

Speaking of garbage, I just read your sexist "woman are for shopping and making old fat drunk idiots food" posts and she almost punched my computer. Are you a Mississippi/Alabama Packer fan by chance?

Interesting fact we are top ten in rushing and passing. At top fifteen in defense. We are dangerous. I am so ecstatic about this team!

I don't like comparing this team to 2010, but its quite similar with the exception of the vastly improved running game. Finley went out early and Rodgers started spreading the ball around to everyone. Hope JJ will b back and we're back to 3 wide receivers. Spread em out and open bigger holes for Lacy/Starks. Great postings.
