Gut Reactions: 2013 Week 12

Gut Reactions: 2013 Week 12

  • Welcome back Matt Flynn.
  • Tying one of the worst teams in the league is hard to get excited about.
  • Eddie Lacy is a man. I hope his ribs aren't hurt too much.
  • It really felt like McCarthy was throwing darts at his playsheet toward the end.
  • Seriously, I saw one failed screen late, but other than that the screen game has gone the way of the dodo.
  • You simply can't throw a slant at James Jones. He never fights for the ball.
  • Add Jarrett Boykin to the list of Thompson's receiver finds.
  • Pity he doesn't have that touch when it comes to finding safeties.
  • Seriously, why is MD Jennings employed?
  • Datone Jones had another decent game. He's got to finish when he's next to the quarterback though.
  • I hope Ted pulled his offer to Raji during the game.
  • I know that personal foul flag against Burnett was frustrating, but that is getting called every time in today's NFL.
  • CJ Wilson going down coupled with Jolly being out ends with Toby Gerhart looking like an All-Pro.
  • I want to be upset with Davon House for starring down a receiver who burned him but who just happened to drop the ball on a big third down, but when the game was on the line and the defense desperately needed someone to make a play - House tipped what would have been a winning touchdown for the Vikings just enough to alter the pass and cause an incompletion.
  • With both the Lions and Bears losing, the Packers are only a half game out of first place.
  • McCarthy wouldn't say who would start on Thursday, but I'll be shocked if its anyone other than Matt Flynn.
  • Go Pack Go.

Bearmeat's picture

Hope ARod is back by Thursday. No way we're beating the Kitties in their house without him.

I expected to lose this game because Dom's D sucks donkey balls. They still suck... but they did manage to get a few very important stops against a bad team today.

1/2 game out of 1st place. I'd be very happy just winning the division this year. Super bowl ain't happening.

Nerd's picture

No way they let Aaron play this week. Suh and Fairly will be taking cheap shots all day, on that concrete surface.

Barutan Seijin's picture

I would expect Detroit to win at home even with #12 playing. That said, Detroit just lost at home to a team starting Mike Glennon at QB.

Nerd's picture

Flynn can beat them.

If the defense holds up. lol

Barutan Seijin's picture

Like that's happening.

Mark in the montain's picture

Packer defense = total coaching failure!

Rymetyme81's picture

The Packers are bad right now, but I just don't get the Lions worship. They are extremely lucky to have 6 wins. What's their excuse for underachieving so badly?

I'm pretty sure Flynn isn't scared.

IowaPackFan's picture

As much as we can go after Capers, we have so many injuries at crucial spots that I don't think scheme is going to help much.

Sam Shields better be back by Thurs. If it's House/Tramon/Hyde vs. Megatron, Burleson and Durham we're in trouble.

We need Jolly back, too.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Not Capers fault that players miss tackles, and drop interceptions as well...

Wenis's picture

McCarthy called a decent game until he got into OT and then just crapped all over himself.

Post-game on WTMJ announcers are melting down. Pretty funny :)

Mark in the montain's picture

WTMJ = We Tote McCarthy's Jock

Bruce Kennett's picture

What about the two-point try???

jeremy's picture

Terrible decision.

SpartaChris's picture

^ Only in hindsight.

Nerd's picture

-It was there for the taking.

-This defense has been exposed for the past 5-6 weeks. Teams have been running on us at will for longer than Jolly and/or Wilson have been out.

-Flynn starts at Detroit. His arm is fine. Should have been here soon as he was cut by Oakland

-First they said Lacy had "wind knocked out" of him. Now they're saying, "hit in ribs." Another case of lying about injuries? How bad is it really? (And what is Cobb's REAL injury?)

-Can anyone confirm if Franklin was concussed? Because if Lacy and Franklin are out next week, we've only got Starks. And Kuhn. lol

-Boykin looked good.

-We saw Jerel Worthy, Sean Richardson and Matt Flynn. But not Derek Sherrod? Does he look WORSE than Newhouse? Because Newhouse looks pretty bad.

packeraaron's picture

Lacy said he had an asthma attack.

Nerd's picture

Hope that's true.

Norman's picture

Asthma? I'll give you asthma!

Judge Smales

IowaPackFan's picture

Didn't realize he has asthma. Not that it matters.

Barutan Seijin's picture

ESPN said that Franklin did have a concussion.

As for Sherrod, Newhouse beat him out in 2011. There's the possibiity that he's just no good.

jack in jersey city's picture

no way we can tell what sherrod is until he has a full offseason to prepare

QOTSA1's picture

It's definitely a possibility that Sherrod isn't any good, but remember, when Newhouse beat him out for the job, that was the strike shortened off season, and the Packers made a huge mistake in training camp by having him compete with Lang for the LG spot, instead of just letting him concentrate on playing tackle.

Stroh's picture

I'll say BS on Franklin having a concussion. He very well might have put the ball on the ground again! I don't care if he actually was concussed I hope like hell we don't see him again until next year!

What you got to say RC Pack Fan? Have you seen enough of Franklin for the season?

How about you Longshanks? You seen enough of Tolzien yet to convince you he's not a good enough QB to win with yet?

RC Packer Fan's picture

Franklin gets a concussion on the play. Odds are high that is why he fumbled.

I'm still high on the kid...

Don't worry Stroh. He won't play Thursday and he won't 'lose' the game for them. You'll have to find another player to blame for their loss...

Stroh's picture

I think the concussion is an excuse. I didn't see him get hit hard, just kinda ran into a pile. Even if he was concussed he should have held onto the ball. Just another example of poor ball security. Enjoy watching him on the bench the rest of the year.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Have you ever had a concussion? I was a RB in high school. I remember very clearly blacking out after getting hit. When you black out you tend to lose control of your body...
I'm not saying that is why he fumbled or not. but it is very understandable if that is why he dropped the ball.

I know you don't like the guy. I do. so be it...

He won't play this week because of the concussion rule, but he will play this year.
I heard their plan was to use him a lot yesterday. So they will use him more this season...

Rymetyme81's picture

He's a 4th rd rookie, most need a season or two to be big contributors. Hell, highly touted Tavon Austin hadn't done sh*t this year until a week or two ago and this guy was a bluechip.

Albert Lingerfeld's picture

He's 5'9 180, he should be concussed. Lucky he is alive.

IowaPackFan's picture

I don't know if Sherrod looks worse than Newhouse. I think Sherrod just isn't ready for sustained work in the trenches yet.

Kevin's picture

I guess hindsight is 20/20, but I feel like MM really messed up the first and goal sequence in overtime. The corner to Jordy just doesn't seem to work very often. Would have preferred run on first pass on second run on third and fourth.
If you're so confident in you're defense getting a stop, why not let them take over at the 2 if you fail on 4th down? Really wish he would have gone for the win with Eddie running on both third and fourth. It's confusing to me how he is so aggressive at some times and so conservative at others. I have more confidence in Eddie Lacy getting 2 yards than in our defense holding them when they have 4 downs to work with, but that's just me

themasterfake's picture

i was hoping for a third conscutive to lacy too...not sure about a fourth one though....

RC Packer Fan's picture

Honestly, I wish he would have tried to throw the ball into the endzone 2x's vs 1. With Flynn as the QB, I would have rather he have 2 opportunity's.
I didn't like the back to back run plays.

Longshanks's picture

I agree RC. Very disappointed with McCarthy that he wasn't more aggressive with the passing.

Longshanks

Stroh's picture

More aggressive passing when the QB wasn't getting it done and they went to the 4th string QB?! Seriously?

What do you make of Tolzien now? He get BENCHED.

Like I said you gave him far too much credit that he didn't deserve. We'll see if he even deserves a roster spot next year. Right now Flynn is the likely backup next year.

Point Packer's picture

Whatever Tolzien is destined to be the next Tom Brady/Troy Aikman and he's already a "folk hero".....

Longshanks's picture

and so are you Pointed Pecker for your gay comments of you wanting to sleep with the boring Mike McCarthy. Who brings shit like that up on a football board. Go to the gay board for that shit!!

Longshanks

Longshanks's picture

Stroh, did you fucking read what Paul Ott Carruth said? MM let Tolzein out to dry with his poor play calling. When Flynn came in, he changed up his play calling. Perhaps you are wrong. No, I know you are wrong. You can take Pointed Pecker with you. Tolzein did nothing wrong. Just executed a weak game plan once again by McCarthy.

Longshanks

IowaPackFan's picture

Exactly. Why not let Lacy follow Kuhn up the middle? Should've been a no brainer.

Derek's picture

ARod won't be back, so count on Flynn. At least Detroit sucks too.

Walty's picture

Has someone put a voodoo curse on MM rendering him incapable of calling screen plays?

Idiot Fan's picture

The last few that I recall turned out pretty poorly. Maybe we just suck too bad at them right now to use them.

NoD's picture

Our D is awful. How is Capers employed still? I could have run for 100 yds on this d.

Nerd's picture

Completely exposed.

FAIL.

The TKstinator's picture

I agree the d is abysmal
But
What would be better play calls for this crew?
More blitzing? Less?
More man? More zone?

I am more convinced than ever that personnel is just as much to blame as anything else.

Nerd's picture

They're effective, when they know who they're supposed to cover.

Anthony's picture

We have a lot of guys on defense with a ton of potential. Most of them have shown glimpses of it. Just like when a head coach can't tap the potential (49ers situation before and after they hired Harbaugh, Chiefs before and after they hired Reid), someone probably can come in and do it. If we got a new DC next year, we'd better get a highly motivated guy who can release the potential.

There's personnel, there's play calling. But there's also motivation and making the players realize their potential. Most players on defense don't play with fire in their eyes. We need a guy who can ignite the fire inside all our defensive players.

Idiot Fan's picture

I'll admit it, I was wrong about Flynn. Although the end of OT sequence started giving me New England flashbacks.

murphy's picture

If only he'd started the game...

It would have been the Flynn Supremacy.

lebowski's picture

This defense pisses me off to no end.

QOTSA1's picture

I really wish the NFL would make personal foul penalties reviewable, way too many of them are being called incorrectly, and they are often times having an effect on the outcomes of games.

I know many people think Thompson is a genius when it comes to the draft, and building a team, but these last few games have exposed this team for what it is, an average to slightly below average team, with a great quarterback.

jack in jersey city's picture

this is definitely a below average team when you have rodgers, cobb, finley, bulaga, jolly, shields, hayward, perry, and barclay out injured. we are the minnesota vikings without them. it's just too many injuries to overcome this season.

Mr Smith's picture

Agreed. To blame the lack of talent is silly. We have more talent on IR than most teams put on the field this year.

QOTSA1's picture

I think people grossly overestimate the talent on this team, especially on the defensive side of the ball . This defense has had Jolly, Shields and Perry much of the year, and they still stunk.

Mr Smith's picture

I can't really form my own opinion because I'm just some dumb fan (much like most everyone else here, I'd assume), but quite a few scouts have made mention to the high amount of talent this team has on defense. And I'll take a scouts word over some dumb commenters on the internet. No offense peeps.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Mathews missed 4 games, and played 1 with a huge club, and the last 2 with a cast. This was the first game that Mathews looked like himself since returning. So in essence he has missed 6 games.
Burnett missed 3 weeks.. Hayward has missed all but 3 games?.. Perry has missed 5 games now? Shields has missed the last 2.

The point is they are injured and banged up. This game, the Packers were without their top 2 CB's, How many defense will be good when they are without their top 2 CB's?

Sure some players are overated, but the main reason why the defense isn't as good as what it could be is the fact that they have been injured in many key positions...

Anthony's picture

So that still leaves the offensive players. The WR's are among the best. The offensive line is average when healthy. QB is best in league (and QB is most important position). Running game is top 10. TE's average (Top 10 with Finley). Defense isn't very good even when we have all our guys.

So a great offense + bad defense = above average team. Not below average, sir.

Bob Tundra's picture

Getting a PAT, instead of botching a 2pt conversion would have won us the game.

IowaPackFan's picture

Exactly. people want to say "oh, this team is a totally different animal without Rodgers". What they're missing is Shields, Hayward, Perry, Jolly, Wilson, Finley, Cobb, Bulaga, Barclay are all hurt. four or five of those guys are pro bowl level players.

You're not going to be elite missing that much talent.

Barutan Seijin's picture

I've been thinking about that. TT did put together a SB winning team. That takes something. Call it genius. A few of the parts were leftover from the Wolf/Sherman years (Driver, Jenkins, Wells, Clifton & Tauscher, who started 4 games). Otherwise, the 2010 team was all TT pickups. Some of the impact players like Woodson and Pickett were even FA signings. Imagine that.

But genius is a fleeting thing; it comes, it goes. Since 2010 the drafts haven't been that great. 2011 was Randall Cobb and a bunch of guys. Recent FA pickups have been practice squadders, backup QBs & Jeff Saturday.

Nerd's picture

The fact that we are even remotely in contention right now is a tribute to the depth that Ted has provided us.

I only wish our DC (and frankly OC) could make this team greater than the sum of its parts, rather than less.

Uhh lacy baktiari? The other short de i cant thibk of thats ranked one of the best in the league

Point Packer's picture

- Matt Flynn should have started this game. Dare I say, we would have won if he did.

- MM's play calling was as usual, predictable and boring. Wonder what its like to sleep with that guy....

- The next Troy Aikman/Tom Brady missed open receivers, missed throws when he actually found them and generally, looked as lost as ever during this game. We would have lost if he wouldn't have gotten the hook.

- MD Jennings is bad. Morgan Burnett is not that much better. Seriously, enough ":Burnett's PPF rating is great" BS. The guy is an average safety in the NFL, at best. As Aaron said, why is he on the field? MD Jennings should be in the CFL.

- On that note, that's probably where the next Troy Aikman/Tom Brady will be in not too long. Mr. Moxie was with the exception of that one drive, Mr. Average 3rd String QB.

- Eddie Lacy ran hard and had a great game. Hope he's ok next week. We will need him.

- BJ Raji is a lazy, fat blob. 8 million per year is way too much. Don't expect to see him in GH next year. Don't care.

- I have heard the term "opportunistic" used as an adjective when describing great defenses. Not sure what the opposite of "opportunistic" is, but its exactly what the 2013 Packers defense should be described as (see Devon House missed INT).

- MM's play calling after the Boykin catch in OT, was just awful. Two conservative runs up the gut when the entire Viking team and coaching staff was expecting it. Would have been nice to see a creative touch that would have won that game. Alas....

- Greg Jennings is irrelevant. Wonder how his acting career is going.

- I'll leave you with a great Longshanks quote from this week's banter:

"Here’s what I see happening. Tolzein will win this game against MN as MM finally realizes he needs to just let Tolzein air it out for the first time instead of playing this conservative bend but don’t win shit he’s been doing the last two weeks.

Tolzein AND THE REST OF THE TEAM takes that confidence into Detroit and Tolzein wins AGAIN two weeks in a row and saves the season. Rodgers then returns after Detroit, the Packers do make the playoffs. I see this happening clear as day."

calabasa's picture

"- Matt Flynn should have started this game. Dare I say, we would have won if he did."

And since MM went all Pittsburgh tough and named Tolzein the starter right after last week's game, he painted himself into a corner and couldn't make the (as it turns out) right call. Although I think Demovsky said on the live blog he thought Tolzein looked better in practice than Flynn, we all saw what happened in the game...

Nerd's picture

We ddn't know what Flynn's arm looked like until he got out there today. Word was his elbow was shot. Thankfully, it isn't.

Tolzien will get a chance to start somewhere. He needs an offseason in Mike's QB school.

themasterfake's picture

Even before the snap of Flynn's first play, pre snap audible I knew he was better. I wonder how the coaches couldn't see it in one play in practice? He's a man, and ST is raw, raw, raw.

Nerd's picture

Well these guys are seeing him work out and practice.

So, why wasn't he in there over Tolzien? Just kind of makes you wonder.

calabasa's picture

MM said Tolzien would start right after the (Eagles? I've suppressed the last 4 games) game last Sunday. So no matter how Flynn practiced, MM wouldn't dare change his mind. That's not old-school.

dullgeek's picture

<blockquote><i>Wonder what its like to sleep with that guy….</i></blockquote>

Really? Dude. I can't unthink that.

Point Packer's picture

Here, I'll go a step further and answer that question for you:

"boring, predictable and uneventful"

fishandcrane's picture

Him and about every other married guy who lives in Wisconsin...I'm guessing

Longshanks's picture

Are you fucking gay or what? Leave that shit to yourself Pointed Pecker!! Nobody but you wants to picture MM in bed you effin moron!!

Longshanks

Point Packer's picture

No, I am not gay. But I have many friends who are.

Longshanks's picture

Yeah right Pointed Pecker. I think it's obvious. Nobody would say such a stupid thing picturing MM out of all people in bed like you did if you weren't you know.... gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Longshanks

IowaPackFan's picture

Get that homophobia shit out of here.

Ray's picture

ALL TEAMS are average to slightly below average without their GREAT QB! Seriously, Denver, New England, any team. 49ers and Seahawks had great defenses and no QB, found the QB and they are good. Without the QB that talent could not get wins. What is wrong with some of you?

Cow42's picture

I agree that all of the teams you mentioned would not be Super Bowl contenders without their star QB's.

BUT...

I don't think those teams would all go 0 for ??? while their QB was out. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that each one of those teams would be able to win a home game vs this Viking team even if their QB was out.

I do not think this Packer team is a SB contender (even w/ Rodgers). I just thought they might have a chance to be more competitive then they are without him.

They are (arguably) the worst team in the NFL without #12.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Ok, take away most teams top QB. I'm sure they can get by for a week or 2. How about taking away their next best top guy, and take him away.
The Packers are on their 4th string QB of the season... How many other teams look good when they are playing with their 4th string QB.

I understand the Packers look bad without Rodgers. But you still have to factor in the losses of Finley, Cobb on offense. Also the losses of Mathews, Perry, Hayward on defense. Not to mention other players the play key roles.

Stroh's picture

Shut Up CowPie... You F'in Buthole!! Just get the FUCK off Packer sites you Fuckin Viqueens fan!!!

murphy's picture

"I do not think this Packer team is a SB contender"

You've made this abundantly clear...in 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010...Well, you see where I'm going here.

"I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that each one of those teams would be able to win a home game vs this Viking team even if their QB was out."

Do you think the Lions could?

Cow42's picture

yes

RC Packer Fan's picture

Lions couldn't win with Calvin Johnson out.

Bugeater's picture

I don't know if this team makes the playoffs, but being only a 1/2 game out of first with games vs. Detroit and Chicago still coming, it's still more than possible. If nothing else, I expect them to at least be in the mix until the end. This is gonna be one very interesting December!

jack in jersey city's picture

i'm so glad that we're in a crappy division! :D

Mojo's picture

Tolzien is not an NFL caliber QB. At least not now. He needs to retool his throwing mechanics. Takes to long to wind-it up and throw. Just an average arm with so-so accuracy. And why so many batted balls?

After the last four games, I've learned that the highest paid player in the league might be underpaid.

Point Packer's picture

"After the last four games, I’ve learned that the highest paid player in the league might be underpaid."

Spot on.

Tolzien is a 3rd string QB. Despite all of his "moxie" (sarcasm).

RC Packer Fan's picture

I will still take Tolzien over Brohm!!!!

Stroh's picture

I don't disagree, but he's still a 3rd string QB. Gotta bring Flynn back and give Tolzien another year of learning and an offseason in McCarthy's QB school. He's not good enough yet, that much is exceedingly obvious.

RC Packer Fan's picture

I like Tolzien. He needs a year to develop into the Packers system. He might never be more then a number 3 QB. But I have seen enough to think that he could get better with a year in McCarthy's QB school, and offseason learning the system.

He isn't ready yet. But give him an offseason, I think he would be ready.

Nerd's picture

Tolzien has a 3/4 release which results in some batted down passes.

He needs an offseason with Mike.

JJB's picture

Also the Badgers rule.

Cow42's picture

Lucky to get a tie today...

Hawk's facemask non-call.
Numerous bailouts by Vikings' penalties.
Patterson's drop (House tip).
Jenning's drop in OT.
Numerous batted passes that almost ended in Viking picks.
Tolzien sucking enough to force MM to put in Flynn.

2 things regarding Flynn...

1. How on earth did TT and MM believe that Wallace&gt;Tolzien&gt;Flynn? What are they looking at in practice?
2. Does the fact that Flynn can come in and run the offense as effectively as he did (after only being here like 2 weeks) mean that MM's playbook is exactly the same as it was when Flynn left?

what a boring offense.
-very little motion
-no stack looks
-never a screen
-zero creative use of personnel

the defense is what it is.
players are bad.
what can you do?

RunAndHyde's picture

Thanks for being less pessimistic than usual cow. I agree with a lot of that though. Offense is just.....bland. TGFE? ....Thank god for Eddie. Without that beast we would never have a chance. Id like to add that Neal....is ....awful. I missed the 4th quarter and OT because of work but from what I saw and have seen in other games for such a big guy he is fn weak. He can't tackle and gets sucked in to only miss a tackle shortly after. I like Perry when he is healthy, but if we don't get a Safety and a pass rusher with some balls in the draft this D continues to suck.

themasterfake's picture

i'd forgotten Perry was on the team.
Shields and Jolly do matter on D... if anything
SHields takes 24 off.

To be a half game out- after that third quarter...I'll take it..some stars are aligning...

Point Packer's picture

"Boring offense" is an understatement. I'm amazed by how many plays I can call pre-snap. And I don't know shit about nothing and haven't studied football offenses and how to stop them my entire life. I can only imagine what defensive coordinators can pick out.

Albert Lingerfeld's picture

Cow again your way to kind.

Really Raji? Really 8 mil. What to stand around and get his ass kicked all day.
I have no idea who 99 is but he should be put on the bench. Lets just say he has an injury. He is a big slow slob who couldn't put his arms around the air.
Dom, at any time this year did you spend one hour teaching tackling.
I know I could not tackle Pederson with one arm, why do your professionals think they can do it? Why are they tackling high and not just grabbing the legs or foot. Vikes seem to have that down pat.

This is the worst defense in the league period. I bet there were 60 year old rb's watching, drooling over those holes that were opened up. How is that Picket, Raji, Jolly thing working?

Hey Mike I know your game plan on TG, run twice and pass if you have to, over the middle on a slant play to Jones who all of a sudden looks slow and has receivers in his pants. Talk about losing a step, ouch.

Hey, lets try that kicking the ball out of bounds. Might was well give opponents the ball on the 40, our D can take care of it. Morons.

Fire the special teams coach, nothing is special on kickoffs for this team.

Stroh's picture

99 is Worthy you dumbass! He just came back from ACL surgery and got activated earlier in the weekend. He just started practicing and shouldn't even be active except for the injuries to like... EVERYONE!!! Apparently your not even a F'in Packer fan! Go away until you know Something... Anything... about the Packers!

Barutan Seijin's picture

A.L.'s right about Worthy. Injured or not, he's a big, slow slob. Hard to see how an injury could slow him down. And Stroh you're right that he should probably never see the field except in emergencies.

Stroh's picture

He shouldn't be on the field, but he needs some practice. Coming back from an ACL is more difficult for a big guy. He has good quickness when healthy and is in the process of remaking his body. Something he said he was going to do b4 he even got injured last season. I'm looking forward to seeing him next year fully healthy and in better condition.

Mr Smith's picture

I'm with Stroh here. Worthy has lots of potential, but should not even be on the field for a few more weeks. Injuries are killing us.

gmanB's picture

Finally we got to see Matt Flynn again. Like I said last week...players just seem to rally behind the guy.

If they can get the win on T-day this team will be making a late season run. Nobody wants to play Rodgers in the playoffs.

Uncle Louie's picture

"Nobody wants to play Rodgers in the playoffs".

Every offense wants to face the Packers Defense in the playoffs.

4thand1's picture

maybe this D but not the one they started the season with. If they get healthy enough on D and make the playoffs anything is possible. Don't watch if you can't take the heat.

ArodMoney's picture

Boykin has to start over Jones and Lattimore has to start over Hawk. They've all played enough snaps to gauge their ability, Boykin and Lattimore are undoubtedly superior players.

jack in jersey city's picture

i have a feeling that jones isn't 100% healthy yet. he was excellent last season

ArodMoney's picture

Eh, excellent is a stretch. His touchdown numbers were great, but he had only 784 yards as the number 2 receiver(sometimes number 1) on one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL last year. Extrapolate Boykin's numbers to a full season and he would have 1035 yards and thats with a backup QB for over half his games.

Stroh's picture

Jones was excellent last season cuz of everyone around him! He was ALWAYS getting the #3 CB on the oppositions team. He's a FA in '14, say bye, bye James Jones! He's good as gone... Boykin will be and is more than capable of taking his roster spot. Good WR made to look much better by those around him!

jack in jersey city's picture

rodgers sure thought he was a key piece in the offense a couple of years ago and went to bat for him! i think aaron would know more than a bunch of schmucks on a packers blog ;)

Stroh's picture

Only reason he was back a couple years ago was no other team was real interested in signing him! Of course Rodgers wanted him back. He wants good WR and he was familiar w/ Jones. Rodgers make Jones much better than he really is. How has Jones done w/ Rodgers out? Jones and Boykin are very similar WR. They won't bother bringing Jones back again next year when they can save millions by keeping Boykin. Jones isn't a bad receiver, but he's average. He needs a good QB to make him look good.

FITZCORE 1252&#039;S EVO's picture

This site is such a hoot after a loss or a tie. The sky aint falling folks.

Nerd's picture

Well, the season is just about on the brink.

TommyG's picture

We're one loss away from not making the playoffs. For this season, yes the sky is falling.

Evan's picture

"We’re one loss away from not making the playoffs."

With how the rest of the division is playing, that's a silly statement.

KurtMc's picture

I'm happy to admit I was wrong about Flynn, but get off of Tolizens back. I'm not a Badger grad, but the kid played well. Bitc$ at MM, TT and the rest of the Packers organization for NOT having developed a back-up for..the..entire..off..season.

Nothing more to add about the D except that they totally stink.

Advice, hit Johnson often and early at the line..TWO people always on him. Make Stafford beat you. IF we play like this on that track surface...toast.

happy TO pull out a tie from the neither region of MM' s a$$.

Go Pack

Mr Smith's picture

Disagree. Tolzien did not look good today. He's normally very accurate, but wasn't accurate at all. He made some bad reads, forced some throws, and missed a bunch. In my completely amateur opinion, he will still be a good back up QB in the NFL... but he had a lousy game. He said so himself.

Lennysmalls's picture

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2013 Packers season has now been closed for retooling. Seriously, all this banter about "will they make they Playoffs if Rodgers returns early, will he, won't he?" ...enough! I have to go Mora here and say "Playoffs!?" Because you're glossing over an obvious lack of talent, trying to put sugar on a turd. Half this roster needs to be flushed down the toilet, the sooner the better, and I for one am glad the QB injury made this apparent. Raji, get you're fat ass outta here, you suck. Pickett, sorry you're old, bu-bye. Newhouse, do you even have to ask? You're a non-person as far as I'm concerned, a waste of an awful lot of flesh. Burnett, you're cut thanks for playing. MD Jennings you're not a doctor, nor do you play one on TV. Also, you're not a football player. Banjo, you'll have better luck learning how to play the banjo and making a living off of that. Quarless get on the practice squad if you want to otherwise see ya. Hayward you're injury prone, we don't need that around here, sorry but your not genetically fit son, neither a you Baby Bulaga, have fun working at Arby's. c.j. Wilson and mcmillon, not good enough, bu-bye. Sherrod you're small and a bit feeble, perhaps you can play in Canada.

For perspective, the Cowboys secondary got it done against the Giants today. The Cowboys.

Any team that can't beat the Vikings at home no matter how beat up isn't going to the post season.

Stroh's picture

Done for the playoffs? Even tho they are closer now than they were a week, even 2 weeks ago? Go away!

lennysmalls's picture

They're not a playoff team. They can't stop the run now, they certainly can't stop the pass. They can't score TDs once they get to the red zone, if they get there. Three years from the SB season, their team and system needs a reboot. They were average even with Rodgers. Even though they have a good running game, they couldn't use it because the passing game wasn't as good as it was the last three years. Don't wear the green and gold glasses, just because the NFC North stinks. The Packers would get blown out by the Saints or the Seahawks or the Cowboys or the Panthers or the Cardinals. Hard to believe, but they're playing worse than the Jaguars right now. It. Is. Ovah. They should have a pretty decent draft pick in 2014 though. Night.

BradHTX's picture

Awesomely funny post, though.

lennysmalls's picture

Oh, and I almost forgot: House, get outta our house.

Cow42's picture

Welp... I figure they probably can't afford to lose again.
Time to start growing the playoff beard.
Wife's gonna hate it.
Tough shit.

I think they can beat the lions with Flynn.

They couldn't stop the run today because they didn't have Jolly and MN is a power running team. They'll be able to match up better vs. the lions' running game while still being able to keep their more athletic DL'men on the field (Jones, Worthy, Daniels). Sure would be a big score if Shields could get back. He did a good job vs. AJ Green. I'd hate to have to watch Williams or House match up with Megatron.

Lions don't give up a lot of sacks. I wouldn't send extra rushers. Play the lions the way everyone played us last year. 2 deep. Keep everything in front. Don't allow quick scores. Make them work. They're undisciplined. They'll make a mistake along the way. Problem is that if you play that way you have to tackle well to eliminate RAC yards... this may be a problem.

I like the way our OL matches up with their DL. They're best rushers are interior guys. Our best blockers are interior guys. I'll take Lang/Sitton vs Fairley/Suh over Newhouse/Bakhtiari vs Allen/Robison any day.

Run Lacy on the edges.
This is not a game for Starks. He gives up ground when running to the outside. Lacy has the ability to continue forward progress while moving laterally.

Even though the defense looked like crap again. I noticed a change in demeanor when Flynn went in. Both O and D still looked shaky... but the effort level and enthusiasm certainly picked up.

Beard gets to grow until the Pack loses again.
11 weeks = a lot of facial hair.

Uncle Louie's picture

You'll be able to shave the stubble off your face before Thankgiving dinner. You wife is safe from the beard.

Cow42's picture

i don't think so.

i feel better about this lions' game than i did going into the vikings' game.

Flynn is better than Turdzien.

Uncle Louie's picture

Are you drinking Longshanks sclhlitz beer.

BradHTX's picture

Cow, this is the most optimistic thing I think I've ever read from you! Good insights, thanks.

Point Packer's picture

"Flynn is better than Turdzien."

That made me laugh.

4thand1's picture

The next man up only works so far. To many key positions out. If I hear MM talk about what a spirited and energetic practice they are having, I'm going to puke. John Jolly should be the MVP on D. He's been banged up and see what happens when he's out. Shields is huge too. The team that's on the field now would win 4 games for the season if they were lucky. Maybe 6 if Flynn is healthy.

The TKstinator's picture

"Next man up" is a nice mantra for players and coaches. Sure, every team suffers injuries.
But if "next man up" is such a good idea, why even have a depth chart? The next guy who gets put in there is "expected" to perform. (Yeah, right, every player is equal. And I'm an astronaut cowboy ceo millionaire model rock star.)

jack in jersey city's picture

yessir. "next man up" sounds wonderful but we've reached the point of no return. let's hope we at least have shields and barclay back for this lions game or else it could be a very dark thanksgiving. you've seen the "next man up" at both of those positions and it ain't pretty. it would be nice to have jolly back as well. i think he's the heart of this defense

4thand1's picture

The clock is ticking. Rodgers is in his prime and a stud running back. They need another difference maker on D. If there's an outside pass rushing free agent, sign him and let Raji go for cap space.

jack in jersey city's picture

they had 2 difference makers in collins and woodson and just haven't hit on replacements yet. i think the perry and matthews combo has the potential to be really good but clay always misses a few games and perry seems to be made of fine china

Nerd's picture

We're not THAT banged up on D.

Dom needs to figure something out. Or Mike does.

4thand1's picture

Jolly, Perry, Hayward, CMIII with a cast/club, Wilson went down today, Shields. That's pretty fuckin banged up.

Nerd's picture

Jolly and Wilson went down, so now we've only got 6 guys on DL.

Perry? Wtf was he doing anyway?

Shields hurt us, but it was the running game that was killing us for the most part. Christian Ponder took care of their passing game. I mean a FB, 11 per carry? Really?

Wenis's picture

You must also look at Flynn bringing them back from being down 16 in the 4th quarter. That right there is something AROD hasn't been able to master. Marty McCarthy and his "martyball" play calling with the game in OT was horrendous.

4thand1's picture

There usually ahead when Rodgers is playing. He's made come backs before only to watch the defense collapse and lose anyway.

4thand1's picture

I didn't think any div. could be worse than the NFCE, but the NFCN is looking really shitty.

RunAndHyde's picture

I hope CM3 gets more snaps against the lions. For the amount of snaps he was on the sideline he still had quite the hellacious game. AJ played ok....but damnit brad jones is an arm tackling mofo. Yeah hr had a sack or whatever but he hits about as hard as Neal does......they both are weakspots IMO. Having said that .....we're still in it. Go pack go!

Paul Ott Carruth's picture

Capers called a great game today. Especially like the use of the trap coverages. Had House secured the catch it would have been a pick six. Players were put in position to be successful. Nice pressure on Ponder today. Liked the use of blitzes even though some didn't get home. The defense kept this game close enough for McCarthy and the offense to win the game. They were lucky to get the tie.

After trading 1st series with no production and following the Packers 1st TD in the 1st Qtr. the Packer defense won the match-up on the Viking's 2nd offensive series. Here's why. Patterson gave the Vikings the ball in plus territory on the GB 42. After a big play by Ellison, Matthews makes a huge series ending sack on 3rd &amp; 6. Walsh makes a chippy 36 yard FG. Win for the Packer defense. What happens on the next 3 series for the Packer offense is criminal.

On the 3rd GB series the Packers move the ball to the 50. On 3rd &amp; 8, a very convertable down mind you, Tolzien is forced to hold the ball as his receivers all take vertical stems and routes. As a result he is sacked, killing the drive. No checkdown, no crossers in his line of sight as on the TD drive (Jones, Kuhn), nothing.

The Packer defense forces a turnover following their abysmal offensive series. Yes, Hawk grabbed Peterson's facemack but that's besides the point. The defense forced a turnover.......AND........McCarthy did nothing with it....in good field position mind you. On 3rd &amp; 5 at the 50 Tolzien is forced to throw deep on the outside to Boykin because McCarthy does not have blitz beating short routes and refuses to stress the interior of the Viking's coverage. Another wasted opportunity by McCarthy's offense.

The Packer defense holds Minnesota to a Walsh 47 yd. FG making the score 7-6 GB. On the series Brad Jones comes through with a timely sack on 2nd &amp; 8 forcing a 3rd &amp; 13 which the Vikings do not convert.

On GB's 5th series of the 1st half they do nothing with the ball. On the series we see another deep shot to Jones on a take-off on 2nd &amp; 7.

Down 13-7 coming out of the half the Packer defense steps up forcing a Viking punt. On the series Hawk comes through with a sack on 3rd &amp; 9. The Packer offense does nothing as usual. Two incomplete passes by Tolzien and a run for no gain by Lacy for a total of 0 yards.

McCarthy makes his switch to Flynn after the Vikings put up 7 more on the board. When I saw the change I immediately remarked McCarthy was making Tolzien the scapegoat. To my suprise, McCarthy actually called a much more West Coast centric game. Flynn opened up with some short passes. A big run by Starks pushed the ball in to plus territory where the drive stalled at the Minnesota 40.

From this point on the Packers defense holds Minnesota to a FG. Interestingly, McCarthy uses Lacy out of the back field on flat routes and immediate release checkdown options which Flynn uses effectively. He even uses Quarless on short middle routes. Boykin and Jones now run comeback routes which net 7, 8 and 10 yard gains to keep the chains moving. Nelson is moved across the formation on intermediate crossers in Flynn's line of sight and he successfully hits him on a nice 15 yd. crosser.

Yes, the Packer defense was steamrolled in the running game late. However, the defense made stops and gave the ball to the offense in good position. They held Minnesota to a FG after poor kick coverage gave the Vikings the ball in plus territory. Were there errors on defense? Yes. Did some players not perform well? Yes. Did this defense give the entire team an opportunity to win the game prior to overtime? Absolutely and unequivocally yes.

This tie and near loss is on McCarthy. His putrid play designs left Tolzien out to dry. Time to scrap the boot pass. That only works when you have your outside zone working consistently. It wasn't and the Vikings weren't fooled. It is the only play action pass the offense seems to have. Now, I'm not apologizing for Tolzien. He didn't play well. But it is interesting to see the play design in the passing game change once Flynn took the reins. Doing nothing on those 3 series back to back to back was the difference in this game. I can hardly blame the defense for wilting in the 3rd quarter after seeing the atrocious play designs of McCarthy. Teams with lesser talent on offense and at the QB position are able to move the ball. But alas, McCarthy is only interested in doing things his way instead of the efficient way.....that is to say...help your players out. Put them in positions to be successful. Give them options. Some have said his play calling/designs are predictable and boring. Predictable...yes. Boring....no. Boring to me is efficiently moving the ball down the field using a ball control passing game and not the run n' shoot concepts he prefers. I welcome boring. A while back someone on this site admonished me for insinuating McCarthy was not a smart offensive mind. I heard Terry Bradshaw call McCarthy an offensive genius this today. He said guys like Payton and McCarthy are geniuses. Well, neither Payton or McCarthy are offensive geniuses. In fact, that's an insult to men like Tiger Ellison,Sid Gillman, Don Coryell, Bill Walsh, and Mike Holmgren. But I will say Payton is a far superior offensive mind than McCarthy. It would sure be nice to have a play caller to utilize personnel and formations to give the offense an advantage. Sorry to say it but Green Bay's best days may be behind them as long as McCarthy holds the reins. They may make the playoffs but I doubt they will ever be a serious championship contender as long as he is at the helm. The organization will be coming up on 10 years with McCarthy very soon and those are Rodgers prime years. Can't waste them.

lennysmalls's picture

Seriously, Bradshaw called McCarthy an offensive genius? Wow. That CTE is coming in nicely.

Nerd's picture

I agree, but to me Mike needed to allow Tolzien to throw more past 3 yards, against the stacked box. I mean really.

But yeah, have a dumpoff guy. lol

Far as I'm concerned the D shit itself too. We did get some sacks. But a FB getting 11 per carry? Wow.

I will agree that if Flynn played the whole game (or the offense performed as it did with Flynn the whole time) that we win this game pretty easily.

I did think Flynn pissed away plenty of clock at the end of OT, just as he did in that loss against the Patriots.

Mojo's picture

Wonder if part of the MM play calling problem stems from a newbie like Tolzien not ever changing the play at the line like Rodgers would. Maybe Flynn has the cojones to do it once in a while. Rodgers certainly does, which explains some of the heated arguments on the sidelines.

Maybe MM needs someone with enough pull to save him from himself.

i'm wondering if rodgers knows this and is the reason for the flair ups we've seen over the past couple of seasons.

don c's picture

defense iss set up for each player to do their job on each play---3rd and 9 in overtime when peterson runs for first down. if matthews didn't do a spin move on that play, he runs right into peterson and it would have been 4 th and 12 . too many people trying to do too much

Nerd's picture

It's not that our guys are getting beaten man on man by players who are better than they are.

They are consistently out of position. They don't know who they're supposed to cover. They're not in their gaps.

I guess that's nobody's fault.

Ranch Tooth's picture

That was the Capers dismissing the Peterson factor.

You would think it was an obvious passing down, yet the Vikings called a run play for the best RB in the league. When in doubt, give it to your best player to make a play, right? That's what happened.

The Vikings aren't a "normal" NFL offense. They are a run first offense even on third and long because their best player is a RB.

Capers should know better.

mark's picture

"You simply can’t throw a slant at James Jones. He never fights for the ball."

Really? I disagree.

mark's picture

I'll add one more gut reaction of my own...

Another week, another total bananas-circus catch from Jordy Nelson. So much fun to watch this young man play football.

RunAndHyde's picture

Ed McCaffrey wishes he had Jordys talent.

Lou's picture

McCarthy kicks the extra point instead of going for 2 and failing, Crosby then kicks the winner to avoid over time instead of tie - where are the comments Packer fans ?????

Evan's picture

Hindsight. At the time, going for 2 was the right call, imo.

Cow42's picture

I would have been going bananas if they would have kicked the extra point. The way the D was playing there is no way I thought they were going to get more than 1 more posession.

Did you watch the end of the Bears' game?
The Eagle's game?

Evan's picture

Ugh...yeah, I made the exact same point elsewhere. With how teams had been draining the clock against the Packers lately, there was little reason to expect to get 2 more possessions in that game.

Point Packer's picture

Agree completely. It was the right call. Fans who think otherwise are not paying attention
